When I was in college, I slept on a mattress that was so thin I could feel the springs poking me in the ribs. A kind aunt heard me lamenting about my woeful sleeping situation and sent me a fluffy mattress topper. It was a game-changer, and I have been a fan of these added comfort layers ever since.
Although itโs likely not as bad as my college bed, if youโve had a mattress for a few years, it might be losing its firmness and support. If a new mattress isnโt in the budget just yet, or the mattress is still in good enough shape that you canโt justify purchasing a new one, what can you do?
A mattress topper is a great way to spruce up an existing bed and add an extra boost of comfort. But you may be wondering, โWhich one is best?โ Using methodology developed by product experts and certified sleep science coaches, weโve narrowed the field to our top choices.
Clarityโs Clear Winner
The Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper earned our top spot because of its luxurious feel, which comes in at a relatively affordable price. This durable topper will provide the uber-soft, cushy feel of traditional memory foam without the heat-trapping side effects, thanks to its infusion of cooling graphite. Our testers thought this hefty topper was dense and durable, built to last a long time and significantly change the feel of your mattress.
Toppers are often used to adjust a mattressโs feel without the hassle of buying a whole new bed. Feel is a largely subjective metric, encompassing everything from how plush or hard a mattress seems to whether you sink deeply into it or feel buoyed on the surface. Itโs one of the first things we consider when testing a mattress topper, and one of the most important factors when choosing the best of the best.
Our firmness scale runs from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. Most beds fall around 6.5/10 on the firmness scale, or medium-firm, which offers a mix of support and pressure relief. Depending on your needs, though, you may want your bed to feel softer or firmer. A particularly effective topper can affect the firmness of a mattress by 1 or 2 points on the scale.
We included toppers that hit soft, medium, and firm firmness levels that can help you change the feel, cushion your pressure points, and get a good nightโs sleep. This encompasses a variety of preferences, so you can find the topper that best suits your needs.
Overheating is a common complaint among sleepers, and most of the time, adding another layer to your mattress in the form of a topper isnโt going to helpโespecially when you consider most of these toppers are made with foam, a material notorious for trapping heat.
Thatโs why we also considered a topperโs temperature regulation in our evaluation. Some of these toppers feature cooling tech like gel-infused foams or fancy covers, but theyโre worth squat unless they pull their weight. We give every topper a cooling score out of 5, which reflects how cool the bed felt during testing. A rating of 3.5/5 is about average, so anything above that should be an excellent cooling mattress topper.
Although mattress toppers are generally less expensive than mattresses, they still cost more than a latte or avocado toast. Therefore, you will want to know that what youโre buying is built to last.
We looked for toppers made with quality materials that will hold up to daily use, including covers that wonโt pile or become threadbare. This is reflected in our materials evaluation, which we rate out of 5. For this list, we included beds that scored at least4/5 in this category.
Generally, we also recommend sticking to a topper thatโs at least 2 inches thick; this not only ensures itโs enough to significantly change your bedโs feel, but sturdy enough to last many years.
Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches selected the best mattress toppers by looking for top performers in the categories above: feel, temperature regulation, and durability.
But our full process involves testing several aspects of a topperโs performance, including fit, support, and more. We evaluate and score these factors using specialized technology and firsthand accounts from testers with different body types about how a mattress topper feels.
Once we have all those scores, we calculate the overall score using a weighted formula. This overall score is a good indicator of a topperโs general quality, and is always a number out of 5.
As we decide which mattress toppers to feature on any roundup, we only include those with an overall score of 3.5 out of 5 or higher. Even if a mattress topper does certain things well, we wonโt point you towards it if it falls below this baseline.

The Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper is a quick and affordable way to breathe life into an old mattress. It is made from durable, high-quality materials that can provide additional support for your current bed.
The Saatva mattress topper is a luxurious option for sleepers seeking high-end materials that provide a comfy place to land. It earned a perfect 5/5 in materials and value, with tester Matt Shickling saying, โAll of the materials feel very high quality compared to other toppers Iโve tested. The cover is comfortable and breathable, and there is no notable pilling, weird stretching, or bad stitching. Itโs just really nicely made.โ
Although itโs got a luxurious feel, it doesnโt come with a super-luxurious price tag, and is actually more of a bargain. It retails for less than $300 for a queen size. Matt thought the quality of this topper justifies the cost. He awarded it a 4.5/5 in value because of this.
Those who decide on this topper should expect โgood memory foam support.โ Matt said, โIf youโre looking to add some plush support to your bed โ and enjoy a slow sinking memory foam feel โ this is an excellent choice.โ He then added that this may not be the topper for those looking to add extra support and firmness.
Saatva touts that this topper has advanced cooling technology because the foam is infused with graphite. Matt said that cooling was โpretty good for memory foam,โ because the material is more prone to trapping heat than other materials. He said that he lounged around on the topper on his stomach for approximately 15 minutes and didnโt experience a noticeable uptick in the temperature. However, if you are looking for a topper that provides a top-notch cooling experience, this may not be your best bet.
Typically, memory foam toppers excel at motion isolation because the dense material traps and dampens movements before they travel to the other side of the bed. However, this wasnโt Mattโs experience when he tested this with a partner. โI felt more motion than I expected, given that this topper is made entirely of memory foam,โ he said. โAlthough it certainly wasnโt an extreme amount, it was more than I expected.โ
On the flipside, he found it had a quicker response than most memory foam toppers. โItโs memory foam, so itโs not the most responsive thing in the world, but when you change position or get off the bed, it retains its original shape pretty quickly,โ Matt said.
Mattress Clarity Test Results: Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper
Excellent cooling thanks to GlacioTex cooling cover and breathable design
Offers balanced pressure relief and body contouring
100-night sleep option
Two firmness options
Elastic corner straps to secure it to bed
Cons
Thick profile might alter the feel of the base mattress noticeably
Pricier than many basic toppers
Recovery time is slower compared to traditional foam
May retain heat more than latex alternatives
Mattress toppers can be an excellent way to change up the feel of your mattress. However, some more luxurious options, like Helix GlacioTex Premium mattress topper, are essentially a mini-mattress. This unique topper uses microcoils between two foam layers to provide sleepers a sturdy and firm surface.
Our product tester said, โThis topper is very supportive and firm. It has some slight sinkage, but overall, I feel more โon topโ of this mattress topper than sinking in.โ He ranked the firmness at a 7, just a tick above what we considered medium-firm. Although he prefers a softer topper, he ranked this topperโs support at 4/5. This score aligned with the GlacioTexโs consistently high scores throughout our performance testing, including a 4 in cooling, motion transfer, and value; and a perfect 5/5 in materials and durability.
Although our tester found the almost $500 price tag (before sales or discounts) a little high for his liking, he did appreciate the value and durability of the materials. โThis mattress topper is of very nice quality,โ he said. โThe materials consist of two foam layers with the GlacioTex technology in between. The cover is luxurious and feels cool to the touch.โ
Ultimately, he thought the quality and durability of the materials justified the price. โThe double layers of dense foam seem like they will hold up well over time,โ he said. โI donโt think there would be sagging after nightly use, especially because of how firm this topper is.โ
If your mattress sleeps warm, this topper may be a way to cool it off. The cover consists of GlacioTex, which is designed to pull heat away from your body. To test this, Our Tester took an initial surface temperature reading on the topper and then captured another one after he lay on it for five minutes. He saw about a 5-degree increase, which we consider great cooling.
The Nectar Mattress Topper is available in soft and firm variations, both of which should provide a traditional memory foam feel, plus temperature regulation from its cooling cover.
Light sleepers who share their bed will want to prioritize motion isolation, or a topper that prevents movement from spreading across the entire mattress. The Nectar Softer Mattress Topper is a soft 2-inch topper made with gel-infused memory foam, providing plush contouring and sinkage to relieve pressure around your joints. Itโs also a prime option for motion isolation, earning a 5/5 from our in-house tester in this category.
โI hardly felt any movement from this plush mattress topper,โ our tester said. โI barely noticed my testing partnerโs movements.โ
Usually, a soft topper that excels at motion isolation wonโt have the bounce or responsiveness of a firmer model; however, even with its soft feel, this topper was still pretty responsive and easy to move on. โEven though you sink more into this mattress topper, it was surprisingly easy to move around and adjust my sleeping position,โ she said, rating the responsiveness at 4/5. โAnd when I pushed the top with my hand, itโd quickly snap back to its original shape, too.โ
The Nectar Softer Mattress Topper also has decent cooling capabilities, which earned another 4/5 score. Our tester measured the surface temperature with our thermal gun and found it increased by nearly 9 degrees after she lay on the mattress topper for several minutes. Even with the slightly higher temperature rise, she stated that the mattress topper remained cool to the touch. โIt was very comfortable to be on, and it felt breathable,โ she said.
Due to its softer feel, this mattress topper from Nectar wonโt have as much support as a firmer bed or topper, so we rate the support at 3/5. You might feel some sinkage around the hips, as our tester did, which could set your spine out of alignment. For a more supportive topper, we recommend the Helix Premium GlacioTex topper.
That said, itโll have nice cushioning if you like to feel โinโ your mattress instead of โonโ it. โIt has a cozy feel, and you feel cocooned in the topper as well,โ added our tester. This is a solid choice to get the feel of one of the best soft mattresses at a fraction of the cost.
Mattress Clarity Test Results: Nectar Softer Mattress Topper
Only available in queen, king, and California king sizes
Optional sleep tracking requires a subscription
Spot cleaning recommended over machine washing
If youโve ever dabbled in smart mattresses and smartwatches for sleep tracking, then I have the mattress topper for you: the Orion Sleep System. Not only does this topper provide a stabilizing, firm feel, but it also features dual-zone temperature regulation, allowing couples to personalize the topperโs heating or cooling to their preferences.
Our in-house tester gave the cooling capabilities of the Orion Sleep System a 5/5, saying the topperโs accompanying app provided great instructions in the form of text, images, and videos. โIt still does take some time to set it all up, though,โ she added. Youโll also have to add water to the included tower to pump through the mattress topperโs tear-resistant tubing, but once you have the cover set and water tank in place, you can adjust the water temperature to anywhere between 50 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
You can quickly adjust the temperature in the app and set times for the temperature to rise or fall throughout the night. The cover and app can also track sleep metrics like sleep cycles and heart rate variability (although those smart features require a subscription).
โI have the Helix Dusk Luxe, a medium-firm mattress, and this topper definitely made it feel a bit firmer,โ she added. โItโll provide more lift to a mattress, rather than soften it up.โ This led our tester to award the Orion Sleep System a 4/5 for support.
The materials are high quality as well, earning a 5/5 in this category. The mattress topper is a polyester-and-bamboo blend to help regulate airflow, and the side panel features both spandex and polyester to help the topper stretch over mattresses up to 16 inches thick.
This is a solid smart mattress topper if you want control over your bedโs warmth or coolness, but it comes at a premium of about $2,300, plus a subscription service if you want the added sleep insights. I should also note that the mattress topper is available in only three sizes: queen, king, and California king. If you have a larger bed and the budget for it, this can be a great option to help optimize your sleep.
Classic TEMPURยฎ feel shapes to the body effortlessly
Ideal for those seeking a plush, cloud-like sleep experience
Reliable durability
Cons
No sleep trial or returns (unless damaged at delivery or there is a defect)
Higher price than typical foam toppers
Heat retention can be noticeable for some users
Not suitable for those preferring firm support
Mattress toppers are an excellent way to add fluffy plushness to a firm mattress. We selected Tempur-Pedicโs TEMPUR-Adapt Topper as the best plush mattress topper because it earned a flawless 5/5 in support, motion isolation, durability, and cooling. While those scores are impressive, our in-house testerโs thoughts on her experience solidified that this was the best plush topper available.
โThis topper hugs you in all the right places,โ she said, โIt completely envelops my body, and I feel like I am resting on clouds.โ
Despite its cloud-like feel, our tester was also taken with how well it supported her. โAlthough this was like splashing down on a giant cotton ball, I found it to be surprisingly supportive,โ she said. โMy spine felt incredibly aligned, and I was just very comfortable overall.โ She didnโt hesitate to give this bed a perfect 5 for support.
She also gave it 5 stars for its cooling capabilities. Although she felt very cozy, she didnโt get hot. โThe topper felt cool-to-the-touch when I ran my hand over it,โ she said. โAs I lay on it, I noticed that the temperature rose to more of a neutral feel, but it wasnโt uncomfortable. The topper didnโt feel hot. It did a great job of not warming up from my body heat.โ
If youโre adding this plush topper to a mattress that you share with a partner or pet, youโll be pleased to know that it offers excellent motion isolation. Our tester had a co-worker join her for this test. As she lay on one side of the bed with her eyes closed, her colleague got in and out of bed, and then tossed and turned like a bedmate repositioning.
โI could not feel any motion from my partner from this topper,โ she said. โIt isolated the motion completely from my partner, and I could not feel even large movements on my side of the bed.โ
However, as is often the case with mattresses and toppers that excel in motion isolation, the TEMPUR-Adapt lacked responsiveness. Our tester said that if youโre a combination sleeper who changes positions a lot throughout the night, this likely isnโt the topper for you. You might like the Birch topper instead, which features bouncy latex.
Natural materials assist in temperature regulation
Plush feel adds softness without overโcompressing
High ecoโstandards for environmentally conscious buyers
Outstanding warranty covers longโterm use
Cons
Loft can flatten faster than foam toppers
Premium price reflects organic craftsmanship
Wool fill may shift, creating lumps over time
Dry cleaning recommended over machine washing
Who says you canโt help save the planet while you sleep? The Birch Plush organic latex mattress topper is made with eco-conscious organic materials, including responsive, all-natural latex. The bouncy nature of our pick for best organic mattress topper also makes it a great pick for sexually active couples and combination sleepers.
When my colleague Kenny Timper tested this, he was mightily impressed with how the GOLS-certified latex performed during the responsiveness, cooling, and durability tests. The Birch Plush earned 5/5 in these categories.
If your mattress wraps you in a deep hug, making repositioning difficult, adding this responsive topper may be an easy fix. Kenny noted that when he pressed into the topper, it went back to its original shape โin a snap.โ โThis topper is surprisingly bouncy thanks to its latex,โ Kenny said.
However, he noted that the bounce comes at the cost of motion isolation. When Kenny had a colleague toss and turn on the topper while he lay stationary, he indicated that he could feel some of their movement. He didnโt think it would be enough to disrupt his sleep, but light sleepers may be affected.
Latex is often praised for its breathability and natural cooling effect, and this topper was no exception. He was especially fond of how breathable the cover and aerated latex foam were, allowing for ample airflow.
Considering that toppers are often a more economical way to improve your sleep environment than buying a new mattress, the Birchโs cost could be a drawback. A queen topper will set you back $500, and if you sleep on a king-size mattress like me, youโll be out over $600. (For something cheaper, I recommend the Nectar topper.)
However, given the high-quality materials that are used in this topperโs construction, the higher prices can be justified. Kenny said, โThis screams quality. Nothing feels flimsy or like it would tear or sag easily.โ So, if your budget allows, the Birch Natural topper is a comfortable and eco-friendly option that should hold up for a long time.
Mattress Topper 2.5-lb Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper
If youโre a fan of the slow-moving memory foam feel, but youโre not ready to spring for a brand new mattress, then this topper may be the perfect thing for you.
Looking for a truly affordable way to upgrade your mattress? Check out the Brooklyn Bedding Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper, our pick for the best cheap mattress topper. Brooklyn Bedding packs this 2-inch topper with gel-infused memory foam to create a comfortable sleep surface thatโs versatile enough to work for all types of sleepers. Our tester, Riley Otis, tested this out and gave it a perfect 5/5 for motion transfer, as well as 4/5 in materials, durability, and overall value.
Not only did Riley run this through performance tests in our sleep lab, but she also has plenty of real-world experience with this topper, as she used one throughout college. She said that one of the main reasons she chose it in college was because a twin XL (the size of most college dorm beds) runs around $100 on sale. Since she knows it can withstand several years of use, she gave it high marks for its quality and longevity.
Given that a twin XL mattress isnโt really built for two people, Riley hadnโt had any experience with how this topper would do when it comes to absorbing movements made by someone sharing your bed. However, when she and her partner tried this out at home, she was pleased to see how well it dampened the motion of their movements. โI couldnโt feel anything when they were tossing and turning or when they got in and out of bed,โ Riley said. โThe memory foam did a great job absorbing all of their motion.โ
Riley also praised how well the โplush and squishyโ all-foam topper contoured around her, saying, โI love how it cushions my hips and shoulders. I think itโs great for side sleepers.โ She thinks that back sleepers will find it beneficial, but doesnโt think it is enough for stomach sleepers who are hoping to add some additional firmness to their mattress.
Although Riley didnโt feel that her mobility was compromised because she was stuck down in the foam, she did say, โItโs definitely not going to give you much bounce. It takes a few seconds to return to its original shape after pressure has been applied.โ
Another feature it isnโt going to give you much of is cooling. Despite the gel infusions, which Riley noted should, in theory, draw heat away from sleepers, she didnโt experience this. โThe topper isnโt cool to the touch, and my partner and I both noticed that we felt hotter than we typically do,โ she said. Nonetheless, for the price, Riley thinks this is an excellent value.
Feels softer than standard memory foam but avoids sinking
Excellent ressure relief for side sleepers in mind
Long warranty
Corner straps for extra security
Cons
Not cooling
Not best for those preferring firmer support
My current mattress is the Nolah Evolution. I am a super fan of this company and its products. However, I am not a huge fan of all-foam products, so I was interested to see how the Nolah Mattress Topper would perform. After my colleague Kenny Timper, CSSC, tested this mattress out in our Charlotte, NC, sleep studio, we decided that it was the best memory foam mattress topper. Kenny gave this mattress a 5/5 in motion isolation, materials, and durability.
If you want to add a little plushness to a firm mattress, this Nolah topper is a solid choice. Kenny said, โThis mattress topper is very soft, and my body mostly sinks through it. This feels great overall, and I think this feels really great on your side if you need more cushioning for your shoulders and hips.โ
It could also be a good choice for those who sleep on a bed with poor motion isolation. Memory foam is an excellent way to dampen the movement made by a restless partner or pet. Kenny tested this feature with a co-worker. โI could sense a little movement but there was no bouncing,โ he said. โThe motion didnโt ripple across the mattress but was instead absorbed by the soft memory foam.โ
However, if you frequently switch positions or have mobility issues, Kenny cautions that although he didnโt feel stuck down in the topper, he did have to put a little more effort into rolling around. He followed up with, โItโs soft memory foam, which is great for folks who enjoy a slow sinking or a deep hug feel from their mattress, but if you want something more responsive, this isnโt your best bet.โ
For those seeking a mattress topper that will last a long time, Kenny recommends this as an excellent choice for lightweight and average-weight sleepers, but cautions that it may break down more quickly if used by a larger-bodied sleeper. โThe topper feels really nice overall with the organic cover, and the foam feels very cushiony,โ he said. โI believe it would hold up over five years for those weighing 130 pounds or less and up to 230 pounds, but those that weigh more than that may experience some smashed down areas in the topper over time since it is so soft.โ These folks should look at the Helix Premium GlacioTex Topper instead, which features miniature coils.
Although Kenny was on the fence about if the materials justified the $449 price tag ($337 on sale), he noted that its customer reviews had earned it a 4.6/5 on the Nolah site. Reviewers were impressed by its quality and how soft it was. Side sleepers noted that the added cushioning helped alleviate stiffness in their joints.
The ViscoSoft Active Cooling Copper Topper is a 4-inch memory foam mattress topper thatโs infused with copper to provide a crisper, fresher sleep surface.
Not ideal for those who prefer soft or plush finishes
May trap more heat than gelโinfused toppers
Slight off-gassing upon setup
Sleeping on a mattress that makes you warm is the sweaty pits. A cooling mattress topper like the ViscoSoft Active Cooling Copper Topper can be a convenient and cost-effective way to chill your mattress out. If youโre worried that the foam construction will trap heat, our expert tester says not to be. He gave this mattress topper an impressive 4.5/5 in cooling. However, proving it is not a one-trick pony, the Copper Topper also received a 4.5/5 for support and a perfect 5/5 for durability and materials.
To test cooling, our tester took an initial surface temperature reading of the topper, then another after lying on it for a few minutes. He was impressed that the temperature only increased by 4 degrees. Since he found this topper to be both super plush and supportive, he spent an additional 20 minutes on it. He said, โI didnโt notice any distinct temperature rise. I am a hot sleeper, and I was worried that the foam would trap my body heat, but it didnโt. I would recommend this for hot sleepers.โ
In addition to improving your temperature regulation, our tester thinks that itโs a thoughtful design and its quality materials could โeven improve an awful bed.โ He appreciated how the 4 inches of foam supported his larger body, and he gave a nod to the girdle-like straps that secured the topper to the mattress. He also said that the cover is soft and well-stitched. The quality and durability of the materials earned an โeasy 5โ from our tester.
Sharing a bed with a partner or pet can not only raise the temperature of the bed, but their motion can also lead to you being awakened. However, after our tester tested the motion isolation with a coworker, he noted that the ViscoSoft topper effectively kept both the temperature and motion down. โAlthough I could feel that my partner was moving, I couldnโt tell you what they were doing,โ he said. โThe motion isolation on this topper was pretty good.โ Therefore, if you have a bed that doesnโt absorb motion and movement well, this topper can likely help you out in that area as well.
All that said, if youโre looking for a topper that will add some responsiveness to your bed, this is not the best choice. We noted that it has an authentic memory foam feel, meaning that most sleepers will sink and experience more of a hug from this topper. For a bouncier feel, check out the Birch topper.
Mattress Clarity Test Results: ViscoSoft Active Cooling Copper Topper
Fully machineโwashable for hassleโfree cleaning
Long trial period
Cons
Less supportive than memory foam toppers
May compress over time and lose loftiness
Basic polyester might not feel premium
I love the feeling of down-filled sleep accessories, but I am much less fond of being poked by the feathers that always find their way through. However, many manufacturers have started using alternatives that mimic the feeling of down, minus the poking and sneezing. We chose the Brooklinen Down Alternative Mattress Topper as our pick for the best down alternative mattress topper after it earned a perfect 5/5 in materials and durability, as well as a solid 4/5 in responsiveness and value.
This topper uses soft, silky microgel fill as an alternative material to down. Expert tester Kenny Timper said, โIt gives the mattress a little boost, and it feels soft on my back.โ If you find youโre sleeping on a too-firm mattress, the Brooklinen topper could be a cost-effective way to soften it up.
Given that this topper is fairly thin, Kenny didnโt think that it was particularly responsive, nor did the actual topper have much in the way of motion isolation. โI donโt think this topper is thick enough to have an impact on these performance tests, one way or the other,โ he said.
Although its thinness meant that there wasnโt much for him to press into and evaluate how quickly it responded, he did say, โThis topper definitely isnโt hard to move around on.โ He feels that those who switch sleeping positions during the night and sexually active folks wonโt experience any hindrance when using these toppers.
However, this type of mattress topper doesnโt absorb a restless partnerโs movements. โThe topper isnโt thick enough to make a noticeable difference in the amount of motion you feel,โ Kenny said. โThat will mainly be decided by the mattress under you.โ If youโre a light sleeper with a restless partner, I recommend the TEMPUR-Adapt topper instead.
Additionally, some Brooklinen products are available on Amazon, but this one isnโt. You will need to order it from the official website. Under the shipping and returns section for this topper, it states that most of the companyโs products can be returned within a 365-day trial period. However, returns are subject to a $9.95 return fee.
Soft fill mimics down without triggering allergies
Boxโstitched design keeps fill evenly distributed
Fluffy enough to significantly enhance comfort
Fully machine-washable for easy upkeep
Cons
Less durable than foam or latex
Some may find it too plush and lacking support
Flatโrate return fee could add to return cost
Lacks premium cooling features
As someone who has lived in the South for most of my life, I know a thing or two about seasonal allergies. If coughing and sneezing are keeping you up at night, a mattress topper like our top pick for best hypoallergenic, the Peacock Alley Down Alternative Topper, may help.
I started sleeping with two Peacock Alley Down Alternative pillows during a brutal flair-up of seasonal allergies, and they made a noticeable difference. So I was excited to test this topperโs performance. My fellow tester ran it through our testing protocol, and this topper shone brightly in both value and motion transfer, earning 4/5 in both categories. However, he was most impressed by the craftsmanship and materials, which garnered a perfect 5/5.
โThe topper feels very well made,โ our expert tester said. โThe filling reminds me of a feather bed, but minus the sneezing those beds cause for me. Despite its softness, it remains quite supportive. I love how the cotton cover is soft to the touch and that it secures to the bed like a fitted sheet.โ
Not only does the topper filled with fluffy feather alternatives keep you from sneezing, it also does a great job of dampening motion isolation. So, if your restless partner is keeping you up at night, the Peacock Alley Topper may help with that as well.
Our tester asked a coworker to get in and out of bed and then mimic the nightly tossing and turning of a partner. The thick filling did a solid job of keeping the motion from disturbing him. However, he cautions that he noticed a crinkly noise that may disturb sleepers who are sensitive to sound.
Given its plush construction, our tester wasnโt surprised that it wasnโt particularly responsive. โResponsiveness is not a strong point on this mattressโand I feel like thatโs kind of intentional,โ he said. โItโs plush and soft, and you sink into it a little bit. I think this is made for people who want to feel cradled and add more soft plushness to their beds.โ For a bit more responsiveness from your topper, Iโd suggest the Nectar topper instead.
Additionally, as a fan of hypoallergenic down-alternative products, I would be remiss not to mention that this topper is machine-washable (in a large-capacity or commercial washer). Being able to toss it in the washing machine is another way to keep allergens at bay, and the company claims that the topper gets loftier with each washing.
Mattress Clarity Test Results: Peacock Alley Down Alternative Topper
The 3-inch Bear Pro Mattress Topper is our pick for the best mattress topper for back sleepers. Individuals who prefer sleeping on their backs typically require a medium-firm topper that offers support, contouring, and spinal alignment. After my colleague tested the Bear Pro, we agreed that it was a solid pick.
This topper earned a 4.5/5 for our support test. My fellow tester said, โI felt supported throughout my shoulders and hips. My spine stays aligned, and the thickness of the topper prevents me from feeling the mattress underneath, and honestly, makes the mattress feel more supportive.โ She thinks that the Bear would be an excellent remedy for back sleepers who may be tucking themselves in on a bed that is too soft to provide adequate support. She said she sank in just enough to experience comfortable contouring, but not so much that she felt stuck in the layers.
The Bearโs supportiveness could potentially help with back pain. Dr. Dasgupta said, โSleeping on an overly soft mattress that doesnโt provide enough support can cause poor spinal alignment.โ By adding this pressure-relieving topper to your sleep surface, you may experience some relief from lower back pain.
Although the Bear Pro will set you back $345 when it is not on sale, it is made with quality materials that can help justify the cost. โI think the materials are of good quality that would hold up for quite some time,โ our tester said.
This topper should also withstand a restless partner. Our tester judged how well it isolated motion by having a co-worker mimic a bedmate getting in and out of bed and changing positions. โI feel little to no movement when someone is on the other side of the topper,โ she said. โThere is a slight shifting from the cover of the topper, but the dense foam prevented me from feeling my partner change positions or move around. Once we both lay down, I felt alone on the topper. I donโt roll towards them or wiggle around when they are moving.โ
However, if youโre a back sleeper who gets hot and sweaty during the night, this may not be the top topper for you. Our tester noted that she could feel it warming up while lying on it. Although it never made her feel hot, she thinks people who heat up when they sleep could get uncomfortable. However, if you are like her, youโll likely have more of a โcozy blanket experience.โ
Latest Updates: In April 2026, we overhauled what we look for in great mattress toppers to ensure weโre still putting forth our best picks. We also added more details to the buyerโs guide so you can make a better decision about whether a mattress topper is a good fit for your needs and preferences.
Other Mattress Toppers We Considered
After thorough testing and research, we feel confident that we have selected the 10 best mattress toppers available. However, there are still a few other worthy options. Here are two toppers that have a lot to offer but just missed the cut line for the best of the best.
Cozy Earth Bamboo Mattress Padโ Offering the luxuriousness Cozy Earth is known for, this pad provides sleepers with a soft, cool, and welcoming feel. However, itโs technically more of a pad than a topper and is thinner than others on this list. Given this and its premium price point and detailed care instructions, I left it off of this roundup.
Layla Mattress Topper โ This plush, breathable memory foam topper offers excellent pressure relief and cooling. However, it wasnโt quite supportive enough for this list, especially when it comes to larger-bodied folks.
What Makes A Great Mattress Topper
We thoroughly evaluate all mattress toppers and run them through a series of performance tests developed by our product experts and certified sleep science coaches. While we look at all the test scores when selecting the best candidates, we also focus on a few specific categories.
Feel
If youโve ever kicked yourself for buying a bed that is too soft or too firm, a topper may be the hero you need. Toppers are a convenient and economical way to change the feel of your bed, and most manufacturers label them as soft, medium, or firm, making it easy to pick the one you need.
However, if you are unsure of the firmness that you like, Dr. Dasgupta, our chief medical advisor, reminds us, โMedium-firmness is appealing to many sleepers because it blends softness and support.โ
A firmer topper can offer support and spinal alignment to a plush mattress with too much sinkage. On the other hand, a fluffy, soft topper may provide some welcome contouring and pressure relief.
How thick a topper is also influences its overall feel. As Dr. Shelby Harris, a Mattress Clarity medical expert and sleep psychologist, suggests, โThe thicker the topper, the more pressure relief it will provide.โ
To make a noticeable difference in the feel of your bed, we recommend getting a topper that is at least 2 inches thick. Otherwise, youโre likely to push through the layers too easily and โbottom outโ on the surface of your mattressโdefeating the purpose of buying a new topper in the first place.
We test each mattress topperโs feel by spending time on it in different sleeping positions. This allows us to gauge whether it works better for a particular position and enables us to make a fair assessment of how it holds up once our body weight has settled in.
Oftentimes, we assign a topper a firmness level, just like we do for mattresses. This scale runs from 1 to 10, with 1 feeling soft as a cloud and 10 stiff as a board. Medium-firmness, which is recommended by Dr. Raj Dasgupta, falls at 6.5/10.
Depending on how your current mattress feels, you can look at both the bed and topperโs firmness rating to decide if the topper will soften, firm up, or keep the bedโs overall feel the same. For example, adding a softer topper (rated at 5/10) to a too-firm bed (rated at 8/10) could have your mattress feeling perfectly medium-firm (6.5/10). It all comes down to balance and what you want from your mattress.
Temperature Regulation
Mattress materials such as memory foam can trap heat and cause sleepers to wake up a hot, sweaty mess. However, replacing a mattress can be an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. Mattress toppers can be a simple way to enhance temperature regulation in the bedroom.
We test a topperโs cooling capabilities by taking a surface temperature reading, lying on it for 7 minutes, and then repeating the process. We evaluate the increase and how cool, neutral, or hot we felt. Dr. Harris said, โCooling components arenโt necessary for a topper, but they are especially important if you are a hot sleeper.โ
Iโd consider average cooling to fall at about 3.5/5 on our scale, which may leave most sleepers feeling relatively temperature-neutral on their mattressโnot too stuffy or not too chilly. Especially hot sleepers will want a topper that scored at least a 4/5 in this category.
Measuring the surface temperature of a topper.
In the absence of a cooling score, you can prioritize components and materials that are known for their cooling ability. One example is opting for latex over foam; though they have similar, pressure-relieving properties, studies show that latex is more breathable and therefore better at cooling than foam. If youโre still married to foam, opt for foam that is perforated or features an โopen cellโ construction, which allows air to pass through. Copper and graphite infusions are another popular inclusion for their natural thermoconductivity.
In a similar vein, if you like the fluffy feel of down toppers, you might prefer a down alternative topper. This has the same soft, airy feel without the natural insulation down provides; many brands even opt for a fiber fill with inherent cooling coppers. These fibers are also found in covers, with popular cooling choices being bamboo (like TENCEL), silk, and synthetic polyfibers (like GlacioTex). Cotton may not offer the same cool-to-the-touch sensation, but itโs also a good pick for a breathable mattress topper cover.
Durability
While considerably less expensive than a new mattress, a quality topper will still be a noticeable charge on your credit card statement. Therefore, we thoroughly examine the topperโs materials to make sure youโre getting a good deal on a topper that will maintain its support for a long time.
Whether our experts evaluate a topper in the studio or try it at home for a week or so, they take care in evaluating the quality of the materials used. We spend a considerable amount of time on each topper during our testing process to ensure that our opinions remain consistent from when we first lie on it.
We judge everything from the zippers and stitching on the cover to the individual layers within the topper. The most durable mattress toppers will be thick and dense, offering a balance of support to prevent sagging. We also recommend looking at the warranty, if one is offered. Longer warranties speak to a higher confidence in the productโs longevity; if a brand is willing to ensure it for that length of time, itโs likely to last beyond it.

What Else Is Important When Buying a Mattress Topper?
Not all toppers will work for everyone. When shopping for a new mattress topper, consider the following additional factors.
Materials
Certain types of mattress toppers will feel different and perform better in certain areas. Letโs go over the most common materials we see:
Polyfoam โ A synthetic foam that usually has a dense, slightly supportive feel. However, this material can trap heat.
Memory foam โ Soft, slow-moving foam that excels in pressure relief. Like other foams, memory foam is prone to overheating.
Latex โ A responsive foam derived from the sap of rubber trees. Itโs a great pick for eco-conscious shoppers who want bouncy, supportive pressure relief. However, itโs more expensive than traditional foam.
Down โ The super-soft underlayer of feathers from geese or ducks. It has an airy, fluffy feel, though it isnโt the most supportive, and its insulatory nature can also trap heat..
Down alternative โ Synthetic fibers finely shredded to resemble down. Down alternative has all the positives and drawbacks of regular down, but itโs also hypoallergenic, which is better for sleepers sensitive to animal product.
Coils โ Miniature steel coils that arenโt unlike an innerspring layer in a mattress. Theyโre supportive and bouncy, but wonโt relieve pressure like latex or foam.
Sleeping Position
โFinding the ideal mattress for your needs requires a thorough understanding of how you sleep,โ explains Dr. Raj Dasgupta. โItโs important to consider your preferred sleeping positions and what you need from your mattress to remain comfortable in either.โ The same follows for mattress topper shoppers.
For instance, back sleepers should look for a balance of comfort and support that keeps the spine aligned. Side sleepers should opt for something softer that contours the hips and shoulders. Stomach sleepers typically require more support to keep their lower half lifted, so consider a mattress that provides extra firmness.
If you switch between multiple sleeping positions, you may want to consider a topper with a high responsiveness score. This means itโs easier to move around on, and you wonโt feel โstuckโ in its surface.
Body Type
โYour body type also plays a crucial role in how comfortable a mattress feels,โ says Dr. Dasgupta. โSleepers over 230 pounds deal with a lot more sinkage than other types, while sleepers under 130 pounds may struggle to get pressure relief from their mattress.โ Itโs important to consider these factors when choosing a topper to address concerns with your mattress.
The best mattress toppers for heavy people will be thick and support enough to keep them from sinking straight through the layers. Otherwise, they may end up resting on the existing bedโs surface, which defeats the purpose of the topper. This might also mean skewing firmer than expected to maintain lift.
Lightweight sleepers may fare better on softer toppers. This allows their body to sink into the surface, relieving pressure rather than letting it build up where they encounter resistance.
Fit
No one wants a topper that slips and slides all over their mattressโnor do you want one that hangs over the sides or doesnโt occupy the entire surface area. Therefore, we consider whether a topper matches the mattressโs dimensions. It earns extra points if it includes corner straps to help it stay securely in place. A perfect 5/5 rating means everything is snug as a bug.
Price
Mattress toppers range from high-end to cheap. When shopping for a mattress topper, we always recommend considering your budget. A high-quality topper will cost at least $100, usually more, depending on which size you prefer.. Try to opt for at least a 2-inch model with high-quality foam. FAQs
Are mattress toppers worth it?
Mattress toppers can definitely be worth it. They are often a convenient and economical option to change the feel of your mattress. If your mattress is too firm or too soft, a mattress topper adds support or contouring. Toppers can also add cooling elements to a mattress that is too hot.
How long do mattress toppers last?
Most mattress toppers have a lifespan of 3 to 5 years. The exact amount of time depends on the type of material and its frequency of use. Larger-bodied individuals may wear down their topper faster than those who weigh less. The quality of the mattress underneath the topper can also add to or reduce its longevity.
Where do you buy a mattress topper?
Mattress toppers can be bought in various places, including online retailers and brick-and-mortar stores.
Can mattress toppers be washed?
It depends on the mattress topper. Some can be washed in a large-capacity or commercial washer, others have a removable and washable cover, while others can only be spot cleaned.
