Best Cooling Mattress Toppers (2026)

If youโ€™re a hot sleeper who constantly wakes up sweaty, it can be tempting to buy a whole new mattress. But a whole new bed can run you hundreds to thousands of dollars. Before you start budgeting or resign yourself to overheating every night, consider searching for the best cooling mattress topper.

These go on top of your mattress, most often to change the firmness or feel of an uncomfortable or saggy bed. But they can also provide extra cooling, thanks to specialized covers, infusions, or better breathability. Below, Iโ€™ve outlined some of our favorites, highly rated for both comfort and temperature regulation.

Clarityโ€™s Clear Winner

According to our tests, the Nolah Topper is the best cooling mattress topper because of its proprietary foam thatโ€™s designed for breathability, leading to a surprisingly temperature-neutral topper with the traditional feel of memory foam. It has a super-soft feel that should provide extra cushioning and contouring to a too-firm mattress.

How We Tested and Selected the Toppers

Obviously, a cooling mattress topper should offer some measure of temperature regulation. Itโ€™s not enough to be described as cooling or to feature temperature-regulating technology; we test every topper, either in our studio or at home, to see whether itโ€™s a fit for hot sleepers.

Aside from inspecting the construction of the topper, we also put it through our cooling test. We take a few minutes to rest on the topper and see whether it warms up beneath us. On occasion, we even use a thermal gun to record the increase in surface temperature. This shows us how much heat the bed holds onto. We combine these findings into our final cooling score.

For this list, we aimed to include mattresses that scored at least 4/5. Around 3.5/5 is temperature-neutral and may feel more breathable, but not necessarily cooling. Sleepers prone to overheating will want to look at the higher end of the spectrum.

Many people are buying a new mattress topper to change an undesirable element of their existing mattress. Thatโ€™s why, in addition to cooling capabilities, we focused on mattress toppers that should provide cushioning and contouring to relieve pressure.

โ€œPressure relief is essential for a sleeperโ€™s comfort,โ€ explains Dr. Raj Dasgupta, sleep science expert. โ€œIt protects common pressure points like the hips, shoulders, lower back, or any part of the body that would dig uncomfortably into the mattress.โ€

While we donโ€™t have an official score for mattress topper pressure relief, itโ€™s at the forefront of our minds when weโ€™re evaluating feel. Weโ€™ll note which sleeper types will gain the most pressure relief from a topper.

Some toppers are also better for firming up a mattress and providing more support, which can benefit stomach sleepers or heavyweight folks. These sleepers may need a balance of both support and pressure relief, especially if their current bed isnโ€™t serving their needs.

Since youโ€™re getting a mattress topper in lieu of a brand-new bed, youโ€™ll want one thatโ€™s durably constructed. The last thing you want is your topper sagging, puckering, or otherwise conking out on you a few months after purchase.

A durable mattress topper is characterized by high-quality materials, a thick profile, and possibly backed up by generous company policies. We look for things like dense foams, well-stitched covers, and maybe a fancy infusion or two. After testing each topper, we give it a materials rating out of 5. All of the toppers on this page earned 4/5 or above in this category.

Though warranties are rarer for sleep accessories, we see them as a sign of confidence in the product. Many toppers come with 1- or 2-year warranties, indicating they should last longer than that before deteriorating.

Construction of the Nectar Luxe Memory Foam Mattress

Our team of certified sleep science coaches selected the best cooling mattress toppers by looking for top performers in the categories above: temperature regulation, pressure relief, and durability.

But our full process involves testing several aspects of a mattress topperโ€™s performance, including motion isolation, response, and more. We evaluate and score these factors using specialized technology as well as firsthand accounts of how a topper feels to testers with different body types.

An infographic showing how different performance categories are weighted when calculating an overall score for a bed on Mattress Clarity. The bed is split into 6 bars to show the relative percentages of each category.

Once we have all those scores, we calculate the overall score using a weighted formula. This overall score is a good indicator of a mattress topperโ€™s general quality, and is always a number out of 5.

As we decide which toppers to feature on any roundup, we only include those with an overall score of 3.5 out of 5 or higher. Even if a mattress topper does certain things well, we wonโ€™t point you towards it if it falls below this baseline.

Why is Nolah Topper the Best Overall for Cooling?

Our favorite cooling topper has to be the Nolah. Itโ€™s made of the companyโ€™s proprietary foam, which, unlike memory foam, is breathable and responsive. Another way Nolahโ€™s foam differs from memory foam is that you wonโ€™t sink into it, making it easy to move around on. This also means that the foam wonโ€™t trap as much heat. Nolah encases the foam in a cotton cover, which also adds some breathability to the topper. This led the topper to earn a perfect score for cooling, despite lacking the fancy cooling tech of many others on this list.

How the Nolah Topper Performed

โ€œWhile itโ€™s not providing active cooling, Iโ€™m surprised by how little the topper heated up beneath me,โ€ said my fellow tester Kenny Timper. โ€œI think with sheets on, the cotton cover will feel even cooler โ€” good news for hot sleepers.โ€

This cover also features corner straps, which help the topper fit securely on your mattress. This is beneficial for combination sleepers who frequently switch positions while sleeping.

Nolah offers this topper in two firmness options: plush and firm. The plush model, which Kenny tested, is better for side sleepers and those who need to soften their mattress. โ€œMy body sinks right through this topper, which makes me think itโ€™ll be great for folks who need extra give around sensitive parts of the body,โ€ he explained.

The firm model will work best for stomach sleepers or those who donโ€™t need extra-soft contouring added to their current mattress. Back sleepers could do well with either, depending on how they want to affect the firmness of their mattress.

What to Consider About the Nolah Topper

While this mattress topper can soften your mattress, it is on the thinner sideโ€”only 2โ€ thick. This might not be ideal for every body type, as heavier individuals will compress the foam more.

We also found that the topper didnโ€™t offer much in the way of responsiveness, as to be expected with an all-foam construction. If youโ€™re looking for something bouncier, I recommend the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper instead.

Why is the Helix Premium Topper the Best for Heavy People?

If you are a heavier person (around 230 lbs or more) who tends to sink into your mattress, it might be hard to sleep cool, so you should consider the Helix GlacioTex Premium mattress topper. It gets its name from its GlacioTex cover, which is designed to pull heat away from your body. This topper contains both foam layers and a miniature coil layer, the latter of which provides additional lift that should benefit heavy sleepers dealing with an unsupportive mattress.

What We Like about the Helix Premium Topper

โ€œThe cover feels cool-to-the-touch,โ€ our in-house tester said after having a short nap on the mattress. โ€œI would also move around and feel the surface start to cool downโ€”so I think this topper could work well for combination sleepers who run hot.โ€

In terms of feel, the Helix topper comes in two versions: Luxury Plush and Luxury Firm. Even though we tested the firm version, both offer the same cooling features. This topper is also just under 4โ€ณ thick, plenty durable, and offers space for heavy sleepers to comfortably sink into.

But most sleepers likely wonโ€™t sink far into this topper. Our testers rated this topperโ€™s firmness at 7/10, which skews slightly north of true medium-firm. It should help adequately support heavyweight folks (and it earned a perfect rating in this category). Average- and lightweight sleepers who are looking for better alignment on their back or stomach should also appreciate this firmness.

What Else to Consider About the Helix Premium Topper

Despite having coils in its construction, our in-house tester didnโ€™t find the topper particularly bouncy. โ€œI had to use a bit of effort to move around,โ€ she explained. โ€œWhen you press down on the foams on top, they do return quickly to their original shape, but I didnโ€™t feel any bounce from the coils.โ€

Why is the Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper the Best Value Topper?

Cooling toppers can be pricey, but the Gel Swirl mattress topper is a favorite of mine for budget-minded shoppers. This topper comes with frequent discounts that can be almost half off, so if youโ€™re shopping around the holidays, youโ€™ll often find an extra-good deal. And because this topper has a gel swirl infusion running throughout, hot sleepers should sleep comfortably on it.

What We Like about the Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper

My colleague Riley Otis tested this topper out at home, and said she felt โ€œespecially chillyโ€ when she was alone in bed. โ€œI did notice it heated up a bit more with my partner beside me, so this topper might be best for folks who donโ€™t share the bed.โ€

This topper is made of a single slab of memory foam, so itโ€™ll significantly soften your mattress. Side sleepers will get good pressure relief thanks to its slow-moving feel. Back sleepers who need additional comfort should also get essential contouring for their lower back.

It also provides excellent motion isolation for couples. If you do share the bed, you shouldnโ€™t be disturbed by your partner. โ€œWhen my partner was tossing and turning, I couldnโ€™t detect their movement at all,โ€ Riley said.

What Else to Consider About the Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper

We noticed that the Gel Swirl Topper doesnโ€™t come with straps to secure it to the mattress. It truly is just a wedge of foam free-floating on your mattress. While it mostly stayed put for Riley, particularly restless sleepers may prefer the Puffy topper, which goes over your mattress like a fitted sheet.

Check Price
Pros
Supportive for most sleepers

Might be too cozy for extra-hot sleepers

Why is the Bear Pro Topper the Best for Side Sleepers?

Side sleepers will want a mattress topper that offers a good amount of pressure relief for their shoulders and hips. And for side sleepers who run hot, the Bear Pro mattress topper might be the solution. What we loved about this topper is its soft, plush feel. This makes it perfect for side sleepers dealing with aches and pains, since it provides the necessary pressure relief. Not only that, it comes inside a cooling cover that dissipates excess body heat, counteracting the stuffy nature of memory foam.

What We Like about the Bear Pro Topper

When trying out the Bear Pro Topper, our in-house tester praised not just its pressure relief, but also its ability to keep her aligned. โ€œI feel really supported in my hips and shoulders,โ€ she said. โ€œPlus, the thickness of the topper prevents me from feeling the mattress underneath, and honestly makes the mattress feel more supportive as a whole.โ€

She also appreciated how she could rest undisturbed with another person in bed. โ€œI feel little to no movement when someone is on the other side of the topper,โ€ she explained. โ€œThereโ€™s slight shifting from the cover of the topper, but the dense foam prevents me from noticing it.โ€

The topper also had good heft, which made it feel โ€œgood-quality and durableโ€ to our tester. She didnโ€™t think the topper would droop or pucker after repeated use, and thought its 3โ€ณ thickness, combined with its supportive feel, would stave off any premature sagging.

What Else to Consider About the Bear Pro Topper

As with many foam toppers, our tester noted little responsiveness. โ€œWhile I definitely donโ€™t feel stuck when trying to switch positions,โ€ she said, โ€œI donโ€™t think it has the bounce to it that makes it necessarily easy, but I am not impeded by the topper.โ€ Still, if youโ€™re looking for effortless movement, I suggest the Parachute Down Topper; it should be easier to move on its fluffy surface.

Pros
Soft but supportive feel
Breathable cover and graphite infusions for cooling

Cons

Not the best motion isolation for foam

Why is the Saatva Topper a Great Luxury Topper?

The Saatva mattress topper is a luxurious option that lets sleepers sink into 3โ€ณ of plush memory foam comfort. It should significantly soften your mattress with its dense, cushy feel. But donโ€™t worry about sleeping hot. Thereโ€™s a graphite infusion running throughout, so it helps dissipate heat. Our in-house tester called it โ€œsurprisingly good cooling for a memory foam mattress topper overall.โ€

What We Like about the Saatva Topper

This topper combines softness and support for an enviable, balanced feel that should suit many types of sleepers. Our in-house tester suggested it for sleepers looking for a softer mattress: โ€œIf you enjoy a true memory foam feel, youโ€™ll love this topper,โ€ he said.

He also found that the topper itself was โ€œreally high quality,โ€ especially when compared to the other toppers heโ€™d tested that day. โ€œThe cover is really nice and breathable, and thereโ€™s no notable pilling or weird stretching or bad stitching,โ€ he said. โ€œThe foams are thick and squishyโ€”this thing is really nicely made.โ€

Even though the topper has that traditional, slow-moving feel of memory foam, our tester found it surprisingly responsive. โ€œItโ€™s not the bounciest thing, since itโ€™s still foam,โ€ he explained, โ€œbut when you change positions or get up off the bed, it snaps back into place really quickly. I didnโ€™t feel too stuck on the surface.โ€

What Else to Consider About the Saatva Topper

This is our โ€œbest luxuryโ€ pick because of Saatvaโ€™s high-quality products and excellent customer service. But with that comes a luxury price tag. At full price, a queen-size Saatva topper costs around $305, which may put it out of budget for some people. If youโ€™re after a super-soft topper thatโ€™s a bit more reasonably priced, check out the Bear Pro Topper.

Why is the ViscoSoft Topper the Best Memory Foam Topper?

Although memory foam has a reputation for heating up, some memory foam mattress toppers donโ€™t trap heat. The ViscoSoft mattress topper might be a thick memory foam topper, but it has several cooling features that help sleepers stay cool. To start, the foam is infused with gel, which draws body heat away from you rather than reflecting it back. This foam comes in a cover made from breathable, moisture-wicking bamboo rayon, which helps hot sleepers stay cool and dry.

What We Like about the ViscoSoft Topper

This topper is available in two thickness options: 3โ€ณ and 4โ€ณ. Light-to-average-weight sleepers should enjoy the 3โ€ thickness, while heavier individuals may prefer the 4โ€ option.

This topper also features elastic straps at each corner, so it can easily attach to your mattress. Because itโ€™s made of foam, it has that classic, slow-moving feel. This provides good pressure relief for side sleepers and good body contouring for back sleepers.

Thanks to its slow-moving feel, sleepers will sink into the topper and get good pressure relief. If you share the bed, you also shouldnโ€™t feel your partnerโ€™s movements on your side of the mattress.

What Else to Consider About the ViscoSoft Topper

This super-sink can make it quite difficult to move around on. It may not be a dealbreaker for most folks, but if youโ€™re a combination sleeper or just like ease of movement on your bed, you might appreciate it. For a bit of softness without movement-impeding foam, I recommend the Parachute Down Topper

Why is the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper Great for Couples?

One of the biggest bedtime concerns for couples is a bedโ€™s motion isolation. If your mattress has poor motion isolation, youโ€™ll feel your partner tossing and turning at night. Thick comfort layers prevent this, which is why I love the TEMPUR-Adapt, which we tried out with the cooling cover. This 3โ€ณ topper provides a thick foam layer to absorb movement, so you and your partner should sleep soundly without noticing each other change positions or getting in and out of bed.

What We Like about the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper

When it comes to temperature, this topperโ€™s cover feels cool to the touch and should wick away any excess moisture. โ€œWhile I was lying on the topper, it never got warmer than temperature-neutral,โ€ our in-house tester explained. โ€œIt didnโ€™t feel hot when I ran my hand over the surface, either.โ€ The cover is also removable and machine-washable, so you can easily keep your sleep surface clean.

The same dense cushioning that makes this topper great for couples also makes it great for pressure relief. โ€œThis topper contours to your body in all the right spots,โ€ said our in-house tester. โ€œItโ€™s also supportive enough to keep my spine aligned. I really like it for all sleeper types, especially if theyโ€™re looking to soften up their bed.โ€

TEMPURโ€™s proprietary material is also denser than traditional foam, so our tester thought it would hold up great with repeated use. โ€œEverything feels thick and durable, down to the cover,โ€ she said. She even awarded it a perfect materials rating.

What Else to Consider About the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper

Despite loving its soft feel, our tester didnโ€™t think it was easy to switch positions on top of this topper: โ€œItโ€™s really pliable, and you sink in quite a bit, so I wouldnโ€™t recommend it for anyone who moves around a lot.โ€ After a better bounce in a foam topper? Parachute Down Mattress Topper โ€“ Best Cooling Down Topper

The Parachute Down Feather Bed is a soft, fluffy mattress topper that could be a great match for hot sleepers.

Pros
Fluffy and airy feel
Breathable and naturally insulating
Makes a mattress feel like a pillow top
Cons
May not significantly change the feel of your mattress
Could trigger allergies

Why is the Parachute Topper the Best Cooling Down Topper?

Foam toppers arenโ€™t for everyone. What if, instead of something thick and bulky, you prefer a topper thatโ€™s light and airy? If so, the Parachute Down Mattress Topper could be a great choice. Itโ€™s filled with super-soft down feathers and features a 100-percent cotton shell with a baffle-box design that creates a pillow-top feel.

Down can work well for hot sleepers because itโ€™s naturally temperature-regulating. This means featherbeds wonโ€™t trap heat in hot months because the down allows airflow.

What We Like about the Parachute Topper

The airy feel of down will give your bed just a slight amount of softness. Donโ€™t expect a massive change in your mattressโ€™s firmness, but youโ€™ll definitely notice a fluffier feel. Our lead tester, Marten Carlson, said he preferred the mattress on his back because of this. โ€œIt conformed well to my body without smothering me,โ€ he explained.

Down toppers are also easier to move around on than foam. They donโ€™t have much sinkage, so you wonโ€™t get โ€œstuckโ€ like the at-times quicksand feel of memory foam. Moreover, you can easily fluff them up if your body leaves an indent.

What Else to Consider About the Parachute Topper

I will note that down can trigger allergies for some people, so this may not be a great topper for someone whoโ€™s sensitive to animal products. A good alternative is the Puffy Deluxe Topper, our pick for the best hypoallergenic cooling topper. The Parachute topper also wonโ€™t provide much in the way of added support, so if thatโ€™s what youโ€™re after, the Puffy earned high marks there, too.

Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper โ€“ Best Hypoallergenic Cooling Topper

Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper

Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper

The Puffy mattress topper is not only hypoallergenic but includes a removable and washable cover, which can help keep your surface extra clean.

Mattress Clarity Score

Pros
Attaches like a fitted sheet

Hypoallergenic construction and removable cover
Cons
A bit expensive

Why is the Puffy Deluxe Topper the Best Hypoallergenic Topper?

Hypoallergenic mattress toppers can help combat indoor and outdoor contaminants, thereby improving your sleep. The Puffy mattress topper is not only hypoallergenic but also includes a removable, washable cover, which can help you keep your bed extra clean. This cover is made from bamboo, a naturally hypoallergenic material. It also is breathable and moisture-wicking, which makes it a great choice for hot sleepers.

What We Like about the Puffy Deluxe Topper

This topper is offered in two firmness options: plush and firm. We tested the firm version of this topper, and it added more support to the bed we tried it on. If youโ€™re dealing with a mattress thatโ€™s too soft, the firm option is a great choice. For a too-firm mattress, opt for the softer version.

While this is a memory foam mattress topper, it doesnโ€™t have that soft, slow-moving quality that memory foam is known for. We found it felt quite responsive, which made it easy to switch between different sleeping positions. Particularly restless combination sleepers should love this ease of movement.

The Puffy topper also rests on your mattress like a fitted sheet, a rarer configuration for a mattress topper. But this should help to keep it extra snug as you move around on the surface.

What Else to Consider About the Puffy Deluxe Topper

With a name like โ€œDeluxe,โ€ a bit of luxury is to be expected. However, the Puffy topper may not be a good option for budget shoppers. For something more affordable, we recommend the Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper.

Why is the Layla Topper the Best for Back Pain?

The Layla mattress topper is made with memory foam that conforms to the curves of the body. This makes it a great option for back sleepers and anyone who deals with back pain. Despite being made of memory foam (typically a heat-trapping material), the topper sleeps cool. It has a breathable cover, and the foam is infused with cooling copper beads. Copper is not only cooling but naturally antimicrobial, which should keep the topper both cool and fresh.

What We Like about the Layla Topper

This topper is available in one firmness option, which we found skewed pretty soft. It should offer great pressure relief to both side and back sleepers dealing with a too-firm mattress. But the foam is thick and dense enough to provide the necessary support to keep the spine aligned, which is essential for back pain relief.

The topper also has a soft, slow-moving feel, which should help to absorb motion. This means excellent motion isolation for couples; light sleepers will be able to rest without feeling their partner toss and turn beside them.

Our in-house tester also thought this topper was surprisingly responsive for all-foam. You do sink in a bit, but you likely wonโ€™t feel โ€œstuckโ€ in the mattressโ€”just gently cradled.

What Else to Consider About the Layla Topper

The Layla topper scored well across the board, but it comes at a higher price point. A queen-size topper, even on sale, will still run you over $250. After something cheaper with a similar feel? Check out the ViscoSoft mattress topper.

Other Mattress Toppers Considered

Didnโ€™t find the right match above? Here are some other cooling mattress toppers we love:

  • ViscoSoft Active Cooling Copper Topper โ€“ As the name suggests, this topper includes copper infusions and a cooling cover to keep temperatures low, which it delivered. However, itโ€™s a bit more expensive than the other ViscoSoft topper on this list, so it may not be the optimal choice for shoppers on a budget.
  • Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper โ€“ Latex mattress toppers are a great pick if youโ€™re after breathability, and thatโ€™s precisely how the Birch mattress topper feels. It offers the same pressure relief and contouring as foam, though with better airflow and extra responsiveness. However, as an organic product, itโ€™s a bit pricey.

What Makes a Great Cooling Mattress Topper

Iโ€™ve briefly touched on what we look for in a cooling mattress topper: temperature regulation, pressure relief, and durable construction. Letโ€™s dive a bit deeper into how we evaluate these metricsโ€”so you can do your own sleuthing on whether a topperโ€™s right for you.

Temperature Regulation

Cooling mattress toppers can have feels ranging from cool-to-the-touch to breathable. Whether a topper is good at regulating temperature depends mostly on whatโ€™s inside. Weโ€™ve found that certain toppers, like those with breathable materials (think aerated foams or even coils) and cooling infusions (like gel or copper), tend to perform better in this category.

Our cooling test is mostly subjective. Since most of our testers take these toppers home to try for a few weeks, their ratings come from firsthand experience. They give detailed notes on whether they wake up cooler or hotter than on their typical bed, how much cooling (if any) they feel, and whether they recommend the mattress to hot sleepers.

In our studio, our testers have the opportunity to use a thermal gun to record the surface temperature of the mattress topper. They do so before and after lying on the bed for a few minutes. The increase in temperature indicates how much heat the topper is holding on to. The lower the number, the better the cooling, and the more comfortable it should be for hot sleepers.

We derive the final cooling score from both the testโ€™s performance and our testersโ€™ opinions about how they felt lying on the topper. A rating of about 3.5/5 is the lowest Iโ€™d recommend sleepers choose, unless they sleep particularly cold. These toppers will likely feel breathable or temperature-neutral, rather than provide active cooling. Hot sleepers should stick to toppers with a cooling score of 4/5 or higher.

Pressure Relief

When you rest on a mattress, especially on your back or side, certain parts of your body sink deeper into the mattress than others. Ideally, this should be a comfortable feeling, but some folks may feel resistance, which can cause discomfort or pain. This means they need a mattress with better pressure relief.

A pressure-relieving topper can ideally fix a mattress thatโ€™s too firm or otherwise too old to allow you to sink in comfortably. To judge whether a topper excels in this area, our tester lies on their back and side on the mattress. They see if they feel cushioning around their lower back, hips, and shouldersโ€”common areas for pressure buildup in these positions. Weโ€™ve found that memory foam and latex are among the best materials for relieving pressure.

If your mattress is too soft, youโ€™ll likely need a firm mattress topperโ€”but donโ€™t think that means writing off pressure relief entirely. Sometimes, a too-soft mattress will have you sinking in far enough that you encounter pushback from the support layers. A firm mattress topper can still offer pressure relief while giving you the extra lift you need.

Durability

Since most folks are buying a topper to avoid the hassle of buying a new bed, they want it to last beyond a few months. How can you tell if a topper is built to withstand repeated use?

We give every topper a rating out of 5 for its materials. This not only reflects whether we felt the materials used in its construction were effective, but also looked and felt high-quality to our testers. A durable topper will score high in this category.

In the absence of a rating from us, hereโ€™s some insight into what to look for: Some materials, like poly foam, donโ€™t have a long lifespan. Latex and high-density memory foam, on the other hand, last much longer. If youโ€™re looking for a more supportive topper, a microcoil topper is the best for adding firmness and holding its shape.

Thickness also plays a role. Not only will a thicker mattress topper more significantly change the feel of your bed, but itโ€™ll also likely last longer. We recommend you stick to toppers that are around 2โ€ณ or 3โ€ณ thick. (If youโ€™re a heavier person, or just need some extra relief along pressure points, you could benefit from a 3โ€ณ topper. Lightweight sleepers should get all of the comfort they need from a 2โ€ณ topper.)

Warranties can also be a good indicator of a topperโ€™s durability. Though rarer for sleep accessories like toppers, many high-end brands will offer short-term warranties for their products. Longer warranty lengths mean the manufacturer believes the product will outlast this time period before starting to deteriorate. Therefore, we see longer warranties as a sign of confidence and a precursor to longevity.

What Else Is Important When Buying a Mattress Topper?

A lot more than simple cooling goes into a good mattress topper. Here are some other factors to consider before making your final purchase.

Materials

There are a couple of materials that are prolific in the mattress topper market. Certain mattress topper types may not only be well-suited for hot sleepers but also offer performance features that appeal to certain shoppers.

Foam

Because of its thick, dense construction, memory foam has earned a reputation for sleeping hot. If you want to enjoy the slow-moving feel but worry about overheating, make sure your memory foam topper has some form of cooling tech built in. Here are some examples:

  • Cooling gel helps pull heat away from the body, so itโ€™s especially great for cooling mattress toppers.
  • Copper, like gel, helps dissipate heat and promote breathability. It also has natural antimicrobial properties.
  • Graphite acts as a cooling agent, which is especially beneficial inside a thick memory foam comfort layer.
  • Open-celled memory foam is more porous, with larger holes to allow for better airflow.

Poly foam doesnโ€™t last as long as memory foam, but it costs a fraction of the price. If youโ€™re hoping to find a budget-friendly topper, look for one with a poly foam comfort layer and moisture-wicking cover.

Foam toppers are great if youโ€™re looking to soften up a firmer bed. Theyโ€™re great for cushioning, contouring, and pressure relief. Many foam toppers are also affordably priced, attracting budget-conscious shoppers.

Latex

Latex refers to a product naturally derived from rubber trees. It has a similar feel to foam, squishy and dense, but itโ€™s also uniquely buoyant.

Our tester feeling the PlushBeds Latex Topper

Studies show that latex doesnโ€™t retain heat as easily as memory foam, making it a good option for hot sleepers. Itโ€™s also a more durable material. And if you want to avoid harsh chemicals, you can easily purchase a topper made from all-natural or organic latex. This will likely be more expensive, though.

Down

Down refers to a super-soft feather layer from geese or ducks. Itโ€™s popular in bedding for its airy, fluffy feel. Down is a natural insulator, so it can feel breathable in the heat and keep you warm during the colder months.

Our tester feeling a Peacock Alley Down Alternative Mattress Topper

However, down mattress toppers are rare and often expensive due to the intensive process involved in ethically harvesting down. Theyโ€™re also not great for folks sensitive to animal products. If you like the idea of down but canโ€™t afford the price or the sniffles, there are also down alternatives: soft, synthetic fibers formulated to mimic its feel.

While down and down alternative toppers can be great picks for an airy, breathable feel, theyโ€™re not the most supportive. Youโ€™ll likely sink right through these toppers and feel your mattress below, so if your bed is quite uncomfortable, Iโ€™d stick to a foam or latex topper.

Coils

Coils in mattress toppers are a more recent venture. These microcoils are often placed between two layers of foam to create a sort of miniature hybrid mattress that you then place on top of your bed. If your current bed is sagging or lacking support, they can be a great fix. Coils also allow for more air to flow through the topper, which can help with cooling.

Microcoils Mattress

Microcoil toppers, as theyโ€™re most often called, arenโ€™t the best for softening up a mattress. Itโ€™s rare we find ones that feel as soft as a full memory foam topper. Their complex construction can also drive a hard bargain.

Firmness and Feel

When you lie down on a mattress, do you like to sink into the comfort layers or relax on top of the bed? If so, memory foam has that quicksand-like feeling and provides plenty of body contouring. If you want something bouncier and more responsive, look for a latex topper.

Also consider how firm or soft your bed feels, and how firm or soft you want it to feel. We rate firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is super-soft, like a fluffy cloud, and 10 is super-firm, like sleeping on the floor. Unsure where you should start? A 6.5/10 is considered medium-firm, the ideal for most sleeper types.

mattress firmness options on a scale of 1 to 10

A good mattress topper should significantly change the feel of your bed by 1 whole point. Sinking too far into your mattress? You might need something firmer. Feel like youโ€™re digging uncomfortably into the surface? Choose a softer topper. Certain sleeper types also have different firmness and feel requirements, which I dive into below.

Body Type and Sleeping Position

โ€œYour body shape and the preferred positions you take influence how a mattress feels,โ€ says Dr. Raj Dasgupta. โ€œWhile I recommend medium-firm mattresses for the majority of the population, certain sleepers may need something softer or firmer. Itโ€™s important to consider your preferences and any conditions that could affect your sleep before choosing the best mattress (or topper) for your needs.โ€

Three icons show different sleeping positions

Here are our quick recommendations based on sleeping position:

  • Back sleepers typically want a bed that feels medium-firm. Make sure it aligns your spine while also contouring to your lower back.
  • Side sleepers will want some extra softness to cushion the hips and shoulders.
  • Stomach sleepers, on the other hand, should sleep on a firm surface. That way, their hips wonโ€™t dip into the layers and cause the back to get out of alignment.
  • Combination sleepers may like a bit of bounce to their bed, which will make it easy to switch between their preferred positions.

Weโ€™ve also noticed that certain body types experience a mattress differently than expected. Heavyweight sleepers (those over 230 pounds) often sink further into a mattress than sleepers of a lighter weight. This means they could bypass the comfort layers and โ€œbottom outโ€ on the extra-firm support layers. To counteract this, we often recommend firmer, more supportive beds. If youโ€™re a plus-size sleeper dealing with this on your current bed, it might mean opting for a firmer topper than you initially thought.

Lightweight sleepers (or those who weigh less than 130 pounds) have the opposite issue. They may struggle to sink properly into a mattress, which can cause pressure to build up easier than other sleepers. For that reason, they may want a softer sleep surface to get better contouring.

Itโ€™s all about striking a balance. Please consider all aspects of your sleep before deciding what is right.

Price

Youโ€™ll find plenty of luxurious and high-end models out there, but itโ€™s not completely necessary to drain your wallet. Many cooling toppers provide fantastic pressure relief at a low price point. For a quality topper, though, we recommend spending at least $100 for a queen size. Anything cheaper may risk low-quality or unhealthy materials, such as cheap foam or fiberglass.

If youโ€™re ever unsure whether a topper is worth its weight in gold, you can always look at reviews both on and off the companyโ€™s site. I also recommend taking full advantage of a sleep trial or return period, if a topper comes with one. This gives you time to try it out and judge for yourself whether itโ€™s worth the price you paid.

FAQs

What are the benefits of a cooling mattress topper?

The biggest benefit to a cooling mattress topper is, obviously, making your mattress feel cooler. If your current bed is too hot but you donโ€™t have the budget for a whole new mattress, a cooling topper is a great fix. It may buy you a few more years on your mattress so you can save up for a new cooling mattress. If your mattress is too firm or too soft, you can also purchase a cooling topper that has the feel you want, again eliminating the need for a lofty purchase.

What is the best mattress topper to keep you cool?

There are so many great cooling mattress toppers. Deciding which one to purchase is highly personal. Our top pick is the Nolah Topper, which is a memory foam topper with a temperature-neutral feel. If youโ€™re looking for something luxurious, we recommend the Saatva. If youโ€™re on a budget, check out the Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper. Need some additional pressure relief? ViscoSoftโ€™s High-Density Topper will definitely deliver.

Do cooling mattress toppers really work?

Yes! This is especially true if they feature cooling covers or infusions, or theyโ€™re made of more breathable materials, like open-celled foam or latex.

What are the best sheets to keep you cool?

If you want to pair your cooling topper with some equally cooling sheets, I recommend the LUXOME Luxury Sheet Set. This bamboo set feels luxuriously soft and cool-to-the-touch, perfect for wicking away excess moisture.
