Molecule Hybrid Mattress Overview

As a Colts fan, I’ll be honest that I haven’t exactly rushed to review the Molecule mattresses. If the brand had featured Peyton Manning or Matt Ryan as spokespeople, the Molecule Hybrid would have been at the top of the list to review. Still, I pushed all sports biases out of my mind when I received the Molecule Hybrid mattress for review, and I can say that it is an extremely comfortable hybrid mattress.

The brand offers three models — the Molecule 1, Molecule 2 Airtec, and the Molecule Hybrid. The Molecule Hybrid is the brand’s premium bed-in-a-box mattress that contains multiple layers of cooling foam over supportive coils. Molecule designed the mattress with recovery and cooling in mind, and it’s going to be a good fit for those with an active lifestyle and many other types of sleepers.

Molecule Hybrid Mattress Firmness and Feel

When I’m testing out a mattress, I first focus on firmness and feel. This gives me a good idea of what sleeping positions a mattress will be best for.

How Firm Is The Molecule Hybrid Mattress?

On a firmness scale of 1-10, the Molecule Hybrid scored a 6/10. 6.5/10 is the industry standard for medium-firm, so the Molecule Hybrid is softer than average.

Top layers of pressure-relieving foam provide the mattress with some real softness, while the coils and other support layers provide a bit of firmness. Combined, the mattress feels soft and very comfortable.

Sleeping On The Molecule Hybrid Mattress

When I was back sleeping on the Molecule Hybrid, the mattress was a decent match for me. While it is a softer mattress, the Molecule Hybrid is also zoned. Because of this, I could feel some more support under my lumbar area, and my hips were allowed to sink in a fair bit. I’ll note that I weigh 270 lb, and lighter people might have a different experience than I did.

Side sleeping, the Molecule Hybrid was very comfortable. The mattress boasts multiple layers of thick, comfy foam. I sank in a fair bit and felt very little pressure on my shoulders and hips. Again, with its zoning, the mattress is even softer under the shoulder and hip areas. This offered me even more pressure relief.

However, when I was stomach sleeping, the Molecule Hybrid was not supportive enough for me. Stomach sleepers usually require a firmer, more supportive mattress, and the Molecule was just too soft. I felt my hips sinking forward into the mattress, and this caused some lower back strain.

What Does The Molecule Hybrid Feel Like?

Overall, the Molecule Hybrid had a slow-moving, traditional memory foam feel. The coils added a bit of bounce to the mattress, but I mostly felt the soft foams on top. These let me sink into the mattress, and the mattress conformed to the curves of my body, filling my gaps.

Personally, I like this feel, but it is not for everyone. If you have mobility issues or simply prefer to sleep on top of your mattress, this might not be the best pick for you.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

The majority of average weight back sleepers should love sleeping on the Molecule Hybrid. They’ll feel their hips sink in just the right amount while the zoning props up the lumbar area. This will help keep the spine neutrally aligned and prevent back pain over time.

Side sleepers in this weight range should also get the pressure relief they require. With three layers of soft foam, the Molecule Hybrid really cushions the shoulders and hips, preventing pressure build up in those areas.

However, average weight stomach sleepers will probably prefer a firmer mattress overall. Even with its zoning, the Molecule is still a softer mattress. Average weight stomach sleepers could feel their hips dipping down into the mattress.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

The Molecule Hybrid should be a good option for heavyweight back sleepers who weigh less than 300 lb. They will feel a good balance of comfort and support, but those who weigh more than 300 lb may not get enough support from the mattress. If you weigh over 300 lb, take a look at our best mattresses for heavy people.

Side sleeping, heavyweight people who weigh less than 300 lb should feel good pressure relief on their shoulders and hips. Those who weigh more could press too far into the mattress and bottom out. This will cause some serious build up around pressure points.

Heavyweight stomach sleepers should find a firmer mattress overall. Larger people require even more support when they are stomach sleeping, and the soft Molecule Hybrid won’t be firm or supportive enough.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Lightweight back and side sleepers should feel good support and comfort on the Molecule Hybrid. Lighter back sleepers won’t compress the top layers as much, so they should feel better support than heavyweight and average weight back sleepers.

Stomach sleepers in this weight range should also feel some decent support on the Molecule Hybrid. Again, they won’t compress the foam layers quite so much, and their hips should be held up by the zoning.

Molecule Hybrid Mattress Construction

Let’s pull back the cover and see what’s going on with the materials and construction.

Cover

Right on top of the Molecule Hybrid, there is a breathable mattress cover that is also designed to regulate your body temperature. It also features a fabric treatment that prevents odor and is antimicrobial as well.

Comfort Layers

The first comfort layer contains MOLECULARFLO, a proprietary polyfoam that is open-cell and meant to be more breathable than standard memory foam. It is very soft and still features that slow-moving feel you expect from memory foam.

A side shot of the Molecule Hybrid

This rests on a layer of AIRTEC foam, which is also proprietary to Molecule. This material also offers comfort along with some good airflow.

Then we have RECOVERYFLO foam, which acts as a transition layer. It is zoned, meaning that it feels firmer and softer in different areas. This provides targeted support and helps keep the spine neutrally aligned.

Support Layers

The Molecule Hybrid’s main support layer contains individually-wrapped coils. These provide good support and promote airflow through the mattress.

The coils rest on a thin layer of base foam which prevents the coils from digging into or damaging your bed.

Mattress Height

The Molecule Hybrid is 13” tall.

Molecule Hybrid Mattress Performance

Some famous athletes say the Molecule mattresses help with their performance. So, how does the Molecule Hybrid perform on our tests?

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Molecule Hybrid mattress is all about sleeping cool. It features a cooling cover, breathable foams, and airflow-promoting coils. Personally, I slept quite cool on this mattress.

Sleeping cool can promote better sleep and even promote recovery after a workout or strenuous day.

Motion Transfer

If you want a mattress for couples, make sure that it will cut down on motion transfer. This occurs when your partner moves around on one side of the bed, and this movement disturbs you on your side of the bed. Or, vice versa!

With slow-moving foam on top, the Molecule Hybrid has great motion isolation. It isolates motion to each side of the mattress, so you and your partner should be able to move around without disturbing one another.

Edge Support

Edge support also allows couples to get more out of a mattress. A mattress with good edge support will let both partners sleep toward the edges of the mattress and use every square inch.

The Molecule Hybrid features a reinforced edge and offers some nice edge support. Even as a bigger guy, I felt well-supported near the edge of the Molecule Hybrid. I felt secure both sitting and lying down.

Durability

When you’re shopping for a new mattress, you don’t want to pick something that is going to break down in a short amount of time.

The Molecule Hybrid is a premium mattress that features high-density foams and high-grade coils. Based on its construction, it should last for at least 7 years.

Off-gassing

Off-gassing often occurs when you unbox a mattress. After unwrapping a new mattress, you may notice a slight chemical smell. This is normal and is just the mattress letting off trapped chemical odors.

When I unboxed the Molecule Hybrid, there was a slight chemical smell. However, I opened the window of the bedroom and allowed the mattress to expand and off-gas for about 48 hours. After that, there was no smell whatsoever.

Noise

Noise is also important for couples to consider. If your new bed squeaks, that’s going to disturb your partner who you move around.

When I rolled around on the Molecule Hybrid, I did not hear any noise. However, just note that hybrid mattresses may start to squeak after a few years as the coils begin to weaken.

Sex

Bouncier mattresses are usually the best for sex because they allow each partner to move around easily. With this in mind, the Molecule Hybrid might not be the best mattress for sex. Sexual partners might get stuck in the mattress and find it hard to reposition.

Company Policies

Now, let’s take a look at Molecule’s fine print.

Warranty Info

The Molecule mattresses come with a limited lifetime warranty that covers defects and other construction issues.

Sleep Trial

Molecule offers a competitive 365-night sleep trial period during which you can try the mattress risk-free.

Return Policy

You get free shipping and returns with all Molecule mattresses.

How Does The Molecule Hybrid Compare To Other Mattresses

Let’s do a bit of comparison shopping. We’ll discuss how the Molecule Hybrid stacks up against the competition.

Molecule Hybrid vs Nectar Hybrid

The Nectar Hybrid is another popular memory foam hybrid mattress. It also features cooling, comfortable foams over supportive coils.

However, the similarities end there. First off, the Nectar Hybrid is firmer than the Molecule Hybrid. It is a bit bouncier, making it easier to move around on the mattress. If price is a major consideration, the Nectar Hybrid also costs significantly less than the Molecule Hybrid.
