The Birch scored perfectly on our temperature regulation test. How does this mattress stay so cool? Well, on top of the breathable coils is a layer of wool and aerated latex, which is much more breathable than the standard foam that most hybrid mattresses use in their comfort layers.
This mattress provides enough support to keep most heavyweight sleepers from sinking uncomfortably below the surface. This is especially true for heavyweight back sleepers, who tend to do well on a medium-firm mattress.
What to Keep in Mind About the Birch
Coming in at $1,349 for a twin, this mattress is not for budget shoppers. We’d only suggest considering it if you plan to use it for more than a couple of years, or if you value organic construction and materials.
The non-pillow-top version will likely be too firm for most side sleepers. It didn’t provide us much pressure relief around the shoulders and hips when we tested it.

Who exactly should get a twin size bed? While twin mattresses are quite small, they are still going to work for a few different types of sleepers.
Single adults. If you sleep by yourself and need a new mattress, a twin size could work very well for you. A twin size won’t take up too much room and, as we will get into below, could save you quite a bit of money.
Those who need a great mattress for kids. Besides crib mattresses, twin size mattresses are the smallest options out there. This makes them a great option for kids who have outgrown their crib mattress. Who Shouldn’t Consider Buying A Twin Mattress?
Twin size mattresses aren’t going to work for everyone. If the following applies to you, you might want to consider a different sized mattress.
Heavier people. If you are a heavier person, a twin size might not be the right mattress for you. You will want to take a look at a mattress for heavy people and also consider a queen or king size mattress to get the right amount of space.
Taller people. Being only 75” long, twin mattresses aren’t going to be long enough for most taller people. They will definitely feel their feet hanging off the edge of the bed. Tall people should look at a twin XL mattress or something larger.
Couples. If you sleep with a partner, a twin size mattress will probably be too small for you. A twin size mattress is barely large enough for one adult, let alone two. You should at least consider a full size mattress for you and your partner.
How Much Does a Twin Mattress Cost?
The price of a twin size mattress will depend on a few factors: materials, quality, and brand. For instance, a lower-end memory foam mattress on Amazon might only cost around $100 for a twin size. On the other hand, a latex mattress from a nicer brand could cost upwards of $1100.
That being said, most twin size mattresses will cost an average of $300. Just keep in mind that a higher-end twin size mattress could last longer than something on the lower end.

A full size mattress is 54” wide by 74” long. You get the same amount of length as a twin mattress, but 15” less width. Because of this, the full size mattress is going to be a better option for couples. A twin size mattress is going to be very tight for couples, but a full size offers around 27” for each partner.
In addition, a full size offers more room for adults and teenagers. A twin size will work better for children, smaller teenagers, and those who have a very limited amount of space in their bedroom.
A twin XL mattress 39” wide by 80” long. Most twin XL mattresses are the same width as twin mattresses, but they provide 6” more length. They are the same length as a king mattress and, when you combine two twin xls mattresses, they are the same size as a king.
With their extra length, twin XL mattresses are a good choice for taller children and teenagers as well. You’ll also find twin XL mattresses in most college dorm rooms. Twin mattresses will be better for smaller children and those who are on a very tight budget.
