Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches have reviewed 600+ mattresses and accessories for over seven years using proprietary analysis and hands-on testing. We assess each bed for support, cooling, firmness, pressure relief, and more.
We’ll discuss our favorite flippable mattresses, all of which offer great value, as you’ll get two firmnesses for the price of one.
If you’re looking for unmatched durability and versatility, opt for the best flippable mattress. Flippable mattresses can be fully flipped over and used on either side. Some flippable beds include the same firmness level on each side, while most have two different firmnesses. Overall, these beds are great for a variety of sleeping situations, whether you want a bed for your master bedroom, your child’s room, or even a vacation rental. With more and more amazing options appearing on the market, we compiled a list of the best flippable mattresses just for you.
Our team of sleep specialists have reviewed more than 600 mattresses, using proprietary analysis and hands-on testing to establish easy-to-understand scores. In addition to an overall score, we measure subscores for support, edge support, cooling, motion transfer, durability, trial period, and warranty.
For flippable mattresses, durability is a primary concern. Because both sides will be used, it’s important that a mattress has high-quality materials to endure years of use. That’s why we only included models scoring at least a 4 out of 5 in durability. We also considered beds with great scores in trial and warranty. If your purchase doesn’t accommodate your needs, there should be an easy return process. Luckily, all of these models have at least a 4 out of 5 for their warranties and sleep trials.

Stomach Sleepers
It offers ample hip support for most stomach sleepers, especially on the firmer side.
Heavyweight Sleepers
This mattress has a thick comfort layer and sturdy coils that can handle heavier weights.
Pros of the Plank Firm
It has a flippable design, so you can easily change its firmness level by turning the mattress over.
It’s the firmest mattress we have tested, so if you need a lot of spinal support, this is a good option.
It works well for stomach sleepers because it helps keep hips elevated and in the correct alignment.
Cons of the Plank Firm
This mattress is too firm for most side sleepers.
Because it’s made entirely out of foam, it tends to trap body heat.

The Plank Firm mattress is one of the most supportive mattresses on the market. It has a flippable design, with two firmness levels in one. On our firmness scale, the the softer side feels like a 8/10 and the firmer side feels like a 9/10. Both sides tend to work well for stomach sleepers, but most side sleepers won’t get enough pressure relief on this bed. Watch our video review to learn more.
Our Expert’s Take
The Plank Firm from Brooklyn Bedding is one of the firmest mattresses on the market. The Firm side clocks in at an 8/10 on the firmness scale, while the extra-firm side is a 9/10. That makes each side significantly firmer than the average mattress, something that appeals to stomach sleepers and back sleepers who like a firmer feel. This construction, combined with high-quality foams, suits heavy sleepers particularly well.
What We Love About the Plank Firm
The Plank Firm is one of the firmest mattresses on the market, which means back and stomach sleepers should both find the support they need for the hips and spine.
The firm, flat surface has minimal “give,” so the Plank Firm is quick to respond to movement.
This minimal “give” also contributes to the Plank Firm’s stellar edge support. When our heavyweight tester rested along the bed’s perimeter, it only dipped 2.5″, leading us to give it a perfect score on this test.
It’s also relatively inexpensive, especially considering that the flippable design means it’s like two mattresses in one.
What to Keep in Mind About the Plank Firm
Because it’s so responsive, the Plank Firm doesn’t isolate motion well. That could be an issue for people who share their bed with a partner or pet. If this is a concern of yours, we would suggest the Layla mattress instead.
We use a thermal camera to measure the heat retention of every mattress we test. The Plank Firm rose 4.5 degrees after we rested on it for a few minutes. This is pretty standard, especially when it comes to foam mattresses. If you want something a bit cooler, we suggest the Zenhaven.
Other User Reviews
The Plank Firm has close to 3,000 reviews and an overall rating of 4.8 stars. Reviewers say it’s both firm but comfortable, with excellent lumbar support.

With a flippable design, water-repellant cover, and antimicrobial coating, the Helix Kids mattress is one of the best beds for children. This bed has two firmness levels, and it works for a wide range of kids.
Our Expert’s Take
Mattress materials are especially important when it comes to the surface your child sleeps on. The Helix Kids mattress is a fantastic flippable, non-toxic option for children between 3 and 12. Flippable mattresses are great for children in particular because you can flip the mattress as your child grows. The firmer side (8/10 on the firmness scale), is designed for children between 3 and 7. The softer side (a medium-firm 6.5/10) is best for children between 8 and 12.
What We Love About the Helix Kids
The Helix Kids mattress is designed to grow with children, thanks to a flippable design with softer and firmer feels. Kids between three and seven will sleep well on the firmer side, while those between eight and 12 should find the softer side comfortable and supportive.
The mattress has a classic innerspring mattress feel, and it responds quickly when kids change positions in the night.
The breathable cover is made with hypoallergenic and non-toxic materials. It’s also made with a water-repellent shield that protects against accidents.
What to Keep in Mind About the Helix Kids
While kids don’t usually share mattresses, it’s still important to note that the Helix Kids mattress has springy coils that don’t isolate motion particularly well.
The mattress costs more than some other kids’ mattresses on the market, which may put it out of reach for some shoppers.
The mattress is designed for toddlers through pre-teens, but it lacks the support to accommodate most younger teens.
Other User Reviews
The Helix Kids mattress has 4.7 stars based on close to 500 reviews. The overwhelming majority are five stars, with customers saying their kids are sleeping well and looking forward to bedtime.

Pros
The Zenhaven boasts several third-party certifications to ensure it’s made using all-natural and organic materials.
Both sides of the Zenhaven are firm enough to support most back sleepers.
Cons

Zenhaven is a latex bed made with all-natural materials, so it’s no surprise it’s one of the best organic mattresses available. The Zenhaven also boasts a durable construction and an impressive lifetime warranty.
Our Expert’s Take
The Zenhaven is a unique flippable mattress in that it’s made of responsibly sourced Talalay latex. This eco-friendly option includes organic cotton in its cover and organic wool in its comfort layer. Sleepers can enjoy the Gentle Firm side (7.5/10 on the firmness scale), ideal for stomach sleepers or back sleepers wanting a firmer feel. They can also flip to the Luxury Plush side (6.5/10 on the firmness scale), great for side sleepers or back sleepers wanting a softer feel.
What We Love About the Zenhaven
The Zenhaven is made with all-natural, organic materials with sustainable manufacturing processes, from the organic cotton cover to the flame-retardant wool to the Talalay latex.
Latex is a durable bedding material, so the Zenhaven can be considered a long-term bedding investment with a lifespan of at least 10 years.
Back and stomach sleepers will both find the support they need on opposite sides of the mattress.
What to Keep in Mind About the Zenhaven
Latex is durable, but it’s also a responsive material with a noticeable bounce. That means it doesn’t isolate motion well, so it may not be a great option for couples.
Neither side of the Zenhaven is well suited to side sleepers. The softer side, Luxury Plush, doesn’t deliver sufficient pressure relief.
Quality materials and construction gives the Zenhaven a more expensive price tag than others on the market.
Other User Reviews
The Saatva Zenhaven mattress is highly rated, with 4.8 stars based on over 300 reviews. Reviewers praise the mattress for its quality materials and many have great things to say about the shopping experience and customer service.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Back Sleepers
Back sleepers of light and average weights should feel nice support.
Side Sleepers

Hot Sleepers

Pros of the Layla
Two firmness choices in one bed allows the Layla to accomodate a broad range of sleepers.
Despite the bed’s all-foam construction, which tends to trap heat, the bed has nice cooling via cooper-infused foam.
Lifetime warranty protects your purchase.
Cons of the Layla

The Layla Original offers a unique proposition in a mattress with its dual firmness flippability. Both the soft side and firm side provide plenty of support and cradling for any sleep position. Learn more in our video review.
Our Expert’s Take
For some, there’s nothing like the soft, slow-moving feel of memory foam mattresses. The material hugs your body and cradles your joints, making these beds outstanding for joint pain and anyone wanting plush pressure relief. The Layla is the ideal flippable memory foam mattress. It has a Soft side (6/10 on the firmness scale), which is great for most side sleepers. The Firm side (8/10) should accommodate most stomach sleepers.
What We Love About the Layla
The Layla mattress is soft and comfortable with excellent pressure relief, and its choice of firmness means it can accommodate the needs of side, back and stomach sleepers.
Copper-gel memory foam in the Layla helps dissipate body heat, so it sleeps cooler than other memory foam mattresses.
Since it’s made with memory foam, the Layla does a great job of isolating motion on both soft and firm sides.
What to Keep in Mind About the Layla
The Layla has both a firm and a plush side, but it lacks the balanced feel that appeals to many sleepers. If you’re one of them, you may want to consider a medium-firm mattress.
Since it’s made with memory foam, the Layla mattress lacks bounce and responsiveness. That means it may not be a great fit for combination sleepers.
Other User Reviews
There are well over 7,500 reviews for the Layla memory foam mattress, with an overall rating of around 4.5 stars. Customers say it has the right amount of firmness and many credit it for easing different aches and pains.
Some flippable mattresses have the same firmness level on each side. These beds are great for durability. You can flip the mattress throughout the year to even out the wear. Keep in mind that these mattresses are best for those certain of what firmness level is best for them.

If you’re unsure of what firmness is best for you, a flippable mattress with two firmnesses might be the way to go. This allows you to select your own comfort level. Additionally, a flippable mattress is great for guest rooms or vacation homes. Guests and visitors have varying sleeping preferences, and a flippable mattress allows them to choose the side that’s best for them.
Why We Love Flippable Mattresses
Extends Mattress Lifespan
Especially in the case of a flippable mattress with single firmness, you can prolong the amount of time you keep your mattress. Flipping a mattress at least twice a year can give each side a bit of a break, so you’re not wearing out a single side as quickly.
In many cases, flippable mattresses with multiple firmnesses can be long-lasting. If you own a guest room or vacation rental where each side is being used, then this can prolong the mattress lifespan.
Versatile
Great for guest rooms or vacation homes: Any guests or visitors should love a flippable mattress with dual firmness since they can choose which side works best for them.
Caters to different sleeping positions: Overtime, you might change sleeping positions. A mattress for a side sleeper may not work for a stomach sleeper, but a mattress with multiple firmnesses allows you to make the proper firmness adjustments.
Accommodates body changes: This works well for growth changes in children or even body weight changes as an adult. Any weight changes can have an impact on how comfortable a mattress is, and a flippable bed with multiple firmnesses can help accommodate these changes.
Cost-effective
Because flippable mattresses are known for having more prolonged lifespans, this naturally extends the amount of time before you shell out $1,000+ on a new mattress.
This is especially true in the case of flippable mattresses with dual firmness. Each side requires a comfort layer, and this extra material can add weight to the bed. This makes some flippable mattresses difficult to transport. When it does come time to flip or move the mattress, we recommend getting a friend or family member to help.
Not As Many Options Available
Traditional mattresses are much more common than flippable mattresses. You should be able to find a suitable flippable model with increasing options on the market. However, there’s a much wider range of choices when it comes to single-sided beds.
Are All Mattresses Flippable?
No, not all mattresses are built to be flippable. Manufacturers or company websites have official information on whether or not a mattress can be flipped. Be careful with flipping a mattress without consulting a manufacturer first. It can end up ruining a mattress or voiding the mattress warranty.

Should You Flip Your Mattress?
Most mattresses aren’t meant to be flipped, but there are a number of mattresses that can be flipped safely. If you’re not sure, check with the manufacturer. Otherwise, you may end up voiding the warranty or ruining the mattress.
Most mattresses can be rotated, though. This entails moving a mattress 180 degrees, or from head to foot, without flipping it. We recommend rotating your mattress if possible. This can help even out mattress wear, prolonging the lifespan of your bed.
Mattresses come in a variety of constructions, and the best one for you is based on your individual needs and preferences. It’s important to consider your body weight and sleeping position first and foremost.

Mattress Firmness
Firmness is dictated by a mattress’s materials and overall construction. In the mattress industry, mattresses are measured on a firmness scale. This scale goes from 1 (the softest) to 10 (the firmest). The firmness that’s best for you depends on your body type, sleeping position, and overall preferences.
Body Type
Body type is a crucial consideration when trying to determine the best mattress for your needs. A lightweight sleeper feels the layers of a mattress differently than a heavier sleeper. Lighter sleepers don’t sink through the comfort layers as much, so they do best on softer mattresses. Heavier sleepers require firmer, more supportive mattresses.
Keep in mind that sleeping position must be considered in tandem with body type. A lightweight side sleeper and a heavyweight side sleeper are going to get different feels from the same mattress.
These Sleepers Need
What Mattresses Are Best?
Side sleepers
Pressure-relief for pain points at the shoulders and hips
Softer beds (such as those with memory foam or thick comfort layers) for contouring and plushness
Back sleepers
A balanced feel that supports the lower body while cushioning the hips and lumbar region
Medium-firm mattresses provide the necessary blend of comfort and support. There are many medium-firm hybrid bed options on the market.
Stomach sleepers
Support to keep the hips lifted and in proper alignment
Firm, supportive beds keep the body elevated. Innerspring and latex mattresses tend to have the proper firmness.
Combination sleepers
A responsive (bouncy) bed for ease of movement
Innerspring and latex beds tend to be responsive. Several hybrid beds allow for ease of movement as well.
Flippable Mattress Considerations
Cooling
If you find yourself waking up hot and stuffy, then you might want to consider a cooling mattress. Latex is a naturally cooling material, so latex mattresses are great cooling options. Most hybrid and innersprings are breathable as well, since the coils allow room for airflow. Memory foam mattresses, on the other hand, are known to trap heat. However, many companies include cooling technology in their foam to combat this. Keep an eye out for cooling gel-infused foams and Phase Change Material, which regulates the mattress temperature based on your body temperature.
The two largest factors when it comes to the durability of a mattress are the quality of materials and edge support. Often, the better the materials, the more expensive the mattress. For the most part, this is a necessary trade-off if you’re searching for something that lasts. Edge support is typically an indicator of durability. This term refers to the sturdiness of the edges of the mattress, which allows sleepers to make full use of the sleeping surface.
Memory foam mattresses typically last five to eight years. Hybrid and innerspring beds last around 7-10 years. You can expect most latex beds to last at least 10 years.
Motion transfer refers to how much a sleeper can feel the movement across a mattress. Good motion isolation prevents high motion transfer.
High motion transfer is bad news for couples, who might wake up to their partner tossing and turning at night. Memory foam layers or thicker comfort layers do an excellent job at trapping movement, so these mattresses are ones with great motion isolation.
Purchasing Your Flippable Mattress
Trial and Warranty
Ensure you read the fine print and understand the conditions of your mattress warranty and sleep trial. Warranties protect you, the customer, from having to pay for damaged or defective products upon delivery. Some mattresses include full or limited warranties, and every company’s conditions vary. Sleep trials are a set amount of time the customer has to test out the mattress. You’ll definitely want to make the most out of this trial, because it’s only eligible for a refund for so long.
We recommend you try to find a company offering at least a 10-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial. The length of these often reflects a company’s confidence in their product.
When to Buy
The optimal time to buy a mattress is around major holidays. From our experience, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Cyber 5, and Christmas are five of the best holidays for mattress sales.
Many innerspring mattresses are flippable, but some companies make other constructions (such as hybrid and memory foam mattresses) flippable. However, we recommend checking with a manufacturer to make sure a mattress is actually flippable, rather than assuming it is.
How do I know if my mattress can be flipped?
The manufacturer or company site can tell you if your mattress can be flipped. If you’re looking to extend the life of a non-flippable mattress, try rotating it instead.
How often should I flip my mattress?
If your flippable mattress has the same firmness on each side, consider flipping the mattress twice a year. Otherwise, rotate the mattress head-to-foot three to four times a year to prolong the mattress lifespan.
