There are mattress toppers that are just a single slab of memory foam, and then there are mattress toppers that pull out all the stops to make your bed the most perfect version it can be. In my opinion, the Helix GlacioTex™ mattress topper is the latter. This high-end topper features a layer of coils, a cooling cover, and straps.

In my unbiased review, I cover my testing process of the GlacioTex™ mattress topper, explain the materials, how this topper changes the firmness and feel, and much more. Keep reading for all of the details.

One of our favorite Helix mattresses is the Helix Midnight mattress, which also comes in upgraded Luxe and Elite models. Helix GlacioTex Mattress Topper Firmness & Feel

Toppers can change the way your mattress feels and how firm it is. With two different firmness choices available, it’s important to find the right Helix topper for your needs. I tested the Luxury Firm version of this topper, so let’s go over how firm this topper is and how it feels.

What’s the Helix GlacioTex Topper’s Firmness?

I tested the Luxury Firm version of this mattress topper, and I think it feels slightly firmer than medium-firm.

The Mattress Clarity firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 6.5/10 representing the industry standard for medium-firm. I tested this topper on top of an all-foam bed that was about a 7/10.

Because I was already testing the topper on a firm mattress, it only added about half a point of firmness and support. But if you were to put this on a softer mattress, I feel confident in saying that it would make the mattress feel a point firmer.

What Does the Helix GlacioTex Topper Feel Like?

The GlacioTex™ mattress topper is made of memory foam and coils and comes inside of a cover. The foam is a bit more responsive than your standard memory foam, meaning it springs back into place quickly after you press your hand into it. The coils, though very thin, give a small amount of bounce to the topper as well. This makes moving around on the topper incredibly easy.

Sleeping on the Helix GlacioTex Mattress Topper

I test mattress toppers in all three sleeping positions to gauge how well they work and what sleeping position is ideal. When I started out on my back, I immediately felt incredibly comfortable. For a second, I thought I was on a plush topper, but that just goes to show how comfortable I felt. The top part of the topper had just the right amount of cushioning, but because of the coils and thick foam layers, I felt supported.

Moving over to my side is when I was reminded that this is, in fact, a firm topper. I felt a good deal of pressure building on my shoulders shortly after moving to this position. Because of the firmness choice I made, however, this isn’t too surprising. I would imagine that the Luxury Plush version of this topper would work better for side sleepers.

Switching to my stomach, I also felt really comfortable and supported here. But because this was a firm topper, I didn’t really feel my hips sink into the foam, even with me being a heavier guy.

30-60 Min Nap with the Helix GlacioTex Mattress Topper

I’m a side sleeper, but because this topper is too firm for side sleeping, I took a nap on my stomach. Most of the time, stomach sleepers don’t need a mattress topper. That’s because most toppers make mattresses feel softer, and stomach sleepers typically need firm mattresses. On firm mattresses, stomach sleepers  won’t sink too far into the top layers of the mattress, which means hips are able to stay elevated. When the hips are elevated, the spine is in a proper alignment.

With this in mind, I really liked the GlacioTex™ mattress topper for a nap on my stomach. Even though this is a foam mattress topper, I didn’t feel my hips sinking into the topper very much. And because of how responsive the topper is, moving around didn’t take much effort.

I liked this topper, too, because I felt like I was sleeping “on top” of the topper, rather than “inside it.” This, coupled with the cooling cover on the outside, meant that I didn’t experience a lot of hot spots. While the foam itself doesn’t feature any cooling materials, I’d say this topper should work well for my fellow hot sleepers out there.

Average-weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

With two firmness options available, this topper should be a fit for just about any average-weight person. Stomach sleepers who need more support should opt for the Luxury Firm version of the topper to keep their hips elevated. Average weight side sleepers who need pressure relief should do well with the Luxury Plush version. Back sleepers have the luxury of choice depending on what they need; If they need more support, the firm version is the way to go, but if they need to soften their mattress, they should pick the plush.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

The firm version should work out very well for heavier back and stomach sleepers. As a heavyweight person myself, I felt really supported while back and stomach sleeping. However, it’s going to be too firm for heavyweight side sleepers, so they should opt for the plush version.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs

The plush model should work well for lightweight back and side sleepers. If you fall in one of these categories, you probably won’t compress the top layer of foam too much. The coils should offer enough support, while the top layer of foam should offer good comfort. Stomach sleepers should opt for the firm version, because they won’t compress the foam too much, and this firmness keeps hips well supported.

Helix GlacioTex Mattress Topper Construction

Let’s take a look at the high-quality materials that go into the Helix GlacioTex™ mattress topper.

Cover

The outer topper is made with a proprietary polyester material called GlacioTex™. You can get this as an additional cooling feature on a Helix mattress, but this topper comes with the GlacioTex™ cover as is. This material is designed to keep the topper cool. In each of the corners, there are elastic straps that keep the topper attached to your bed.

Comfort Layer

The topper has three layers. Let’s start with the comfort layer on top, which is a 1.5” thick layer of memory foam. This could add some plush comfort or feel a bit more supportive depending on the firmness you feel.

Support Layers

Unlike other toppers, this mattress topper is almost like a mini mattress because it has two support layers. Underneath the first layer of foam is a thin layer of microcoils, measuring .75”. The microcoils help add support and prevent you from bottoming out of the topper. Underneath that is a 1.5” thick layer of high-density foam for additional support.

Topper Height

The Helix GlacioTex™ mattress topper is 3.75” tall.

Helix GlacioTex Mattress Topper Performance

Let’s cover a few more key factors to consider before clicking “check out.”

Sleeping Hot or Cold

In my testing, I didn’t feel hot on this topper. This is partly because the cover is designed for cooling and pulling heat away from your body. Additionally, I find that mattress toppers with covers keep you from sinking too far into the actual foam, which prevents the foam from reflecting body heat back at you.

After about 30 minutes of staying stationary on the topper, I didn’t really feel any hot spots forming. This should be a great addition to your bed if you’re a hot sleeper.

Durability

Helix offers a one-year limited warranty on this topper. However, because of the coils and the fact that this topper comes inside of a cover, I expect this topper to last anywhere from three to five years with good care.

Off-Gassing

The Helix GlacioTex™ Premium mattress topper arrives compressed into a box. When I unboxed it, the foam sprang to form almost immediately. However, most memory foam toppers have a slight chemical smell at first, which I did notice when I removed all the packaging. It’s best to let the topper off-gas in a well ventilated area. This smell should dissipate after about 24-48 hours.

Cleaning

Helix recommends that you spot clean this topper. Mix a mild detergent with warm water to treat the affected area and let air dry when finished.

Allergens

While not listed as a hypoallergenic product, memory foam and polyester are not materials that are known to trap allergens. People with sensitive allergies shouldn’t worry about this topper triggering any allergies.

Company Policies

Here’s what Helix offers when you purchase the GlacioTex™ mattress topper.

Warranty

The Helix GlacioTex™ mattress topper comes with a one-year limited warranty. This means that the warranty covers defects or damages that were the result of production errors.

Sleep Trial

You’ll have 100 nights to test out this mattress topper.

Return Policy

If, during that 100-night trial period, you decide that the GlacioTex™ Premium topper isn’t for you, you can issue a return or exchange. Helix offers free shipping and returns on all orders.

How Does the Helix GlacioTex Mattress Topper Compare to Other Toppers?

Not sure this is the topper for you? Let’s compare the GlacioTex™ Premium topper to two other toppers–one that features traditional memory foam and another made with latex foam.

Helix vs Saatva

The memory foam used in the Helix GlacioTex™ mattress topper is more responsive and springs back into place when you press into it. But this isn’t how all memory foam toppers feel. The Saatva Graphite topper has a more traditional memory foam feel, meaning it takes a second or two to return to its shape after you apply pressure.

Saatva Mattress Topper Feel

Helix offers its GlacioTex™ mattress topper in two firmnesses, while the Saatva Graphite topper is only offered in one. This means that the Saatva topper is better for those who need to soften their mattress and get some additional pressure relief, like side sleepers. Back and stomach sleepers who are dealing with a sagging mattress might be better with the firm version of the Helix topper. The firm version offers a good amount of support that should keep back and stomach sleepers’ spines in a proper alignment.

Helix vs PlushBeds

Memory foam is a standard material for most toppers, but if you want to retain a bouncy, springy feel to your bed, the PlushBeds Natural Latex mattress topper is a good choice. Latex foam performs differently than memory foam because it’s soft, but has a bouncy, springy feeling to it, making it easy to move around on. While the Helix topper is also easy to move on, it doesn’t have the same bounce that the PlushBeds topper has.

Both toppers come in different firmness options, however Helix only offers two while PlushBeds offers five. But the options don’t stop there with PlushBeds: This topper comes in different height options as well. The Helix topper is almost 4” tall, but PlushBeds offers 2” and 3” options for its topper. The 2” PlushBed topper could be ideal for those who have an almost perfect bed and only need a thin layer of additional comfort.

Both toppers have covers, but unlike Helix, the PlushBeds topper’s cover is sold separately. The Plushbeds cover also doesn’t have straps to attach it to your bed, while the Helix topper does.

Helix GlacioTex Mattress Topper FAQs

Are Helix mattresses and toppers hot to sleep on?

No. The base models of Helix mattresses might not have as many cooling features as their Luxe and Elite counterparts, but Helix mattresses are hybrid mattresses, meaning they have coils which make it easier for air to flow through the mattress.

The GlacioTex™ topper uses its namesake material in the outer cover of the topper. This polyester material is able to draw body heat away from sleepers and keep them cool while they rest.

Be sure to check out our list of the best cooling mattresses and cooling mattress toppers for even more options.

How long will the Helix GlacioTex™ mattress topper last?

Around three to five years. This topper comes inside of a cover, which helps protect the memory foam from wear and tear. The thin layer of steel microcoils are also known to be durable, so all of this together means the topper should last several years with good care.

What if I don’t like my Helix GlacioTex™ topper?

You can return or exchange the GlacioTex™ topper during the 100-night trial period. Helix offers full refunds and free shipping for all returns and exchanges.
