Kiwi Sleep Mattress Firmness and Feel
Before we dive deeper into its unusual construction, let’s take a look at Kiwi Sleep’s firmness and feel.
How Firm is the Kiwi Sleep?
On the Mattress Clarity firmness scale, 6.5/10 represents medium firm. It’s also the industry standard, and that’s exactly what the Kiwi Sleep mattress feels like. The innersprings and comfort layers combine to create a great balance of comfort and support.
Sleeping On The Kiwi Sleep Mattress
The Kiwi Sleep mattress works well for back and side sleepers. The small memory foam squares help relieve pain along pressure points, which is especially beneficial for side sleepers. Back sleepers will feel ample support along their lower back.
Average and heavyweight stomach sleepers won’t get enough support on the Kiwi Sleep mattress. However, lightweight people should feel quite comfortable in this sleeping position.
What Does Kiwi Sleep Feel Like?
Even though the comfort layer contains memory foam, the Kiwi Sleep mattress doesn’t feel like your typical foam bed. The top layer feels especially responsive, so when you press your hand into it, the material immediately snaps back into place.
You’ll gently sink into this mattress, but you won’t feel like you’re going to bottom out. Because this mattress doesn’t create that stereotypical quicksand feeling, it’s super easy to move around on top of it.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb
Average weight back sleepers should feel supported and comfy on the Kiwi Sleep mattress. The coil system helps support the lower back, so sleepers should maintain the correct spinal alignment throughout the night. Side sleepers will feel lots of cushioning along their shoulders and hips, which helps relieve pressure and tension.
Stomach sleepers, however, will likely feel their hips sink into the top layer. This cranes the back out of the proper alignment, which can lead to lower back pain over time. If this is your preferred sleeping position, check out our list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb
Folks who weigh between 230 lb and 300 lb should feel comfortable while back and side sleeping. Kiwi Sleep’s strong coil system provides the necessary lumbar support, and the cushy top layers create ample pressure relief. Those who weigh more than 300 lb, however, might need something a bit more supportive. If you fall in this category, take a look at our list of the best mattresses for heavy people.
The Kiwi Sleep mattress isn’t supportive enough for heavier stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, people need an especially firm mattress. Otherwise, they run the risk of developing lower back pain as time goes on.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb
Lightweight sleepers should feel comfy and supported in all three sleeping positions. The responsive foam will relieve shoulder pressure, and the coils will help the spine stay in the correct alignment.
Kiwi Sleep Mattress Construction
This isn’t an ordinary mattress. Let’s see what sets it apart from others.
Mattress Height
The Kiwi Sleep Mattress is 12” tall, which is typical for a hybrid mattress.
Cover
Kiwi Sleep’s cutting edge design begins at its cover. With a zipper around the sides, the mattress cover is removable and machine washable. You won’t have to worry about getting stains out of a mattress ever again!
A mattress pad protects the comfort layer from additional stains, so you can rest assured that this bed will stay clean for many years.
Comfort Layer
Now – the star of the show! The 700 tiny mattresses utilize Kiwi Sleep’s patented “Cushion Pocket” technology. Most mattresses feature a thick slab of memory foam, but Kiwi Sleep has hundreds of small foam squares. This creates tons of room for airflow, and it gives the mattress a responsive feel.
Support Layer
Beneath the comfort later sits a supportive coil system. These individually wrapped coils cut down on noise and help keep the mattress cool. Additionally, coils tend to last longer than foam support layers. You won’t have to worry about replacing this mattress any time soon.

Kiwi Sleep Mattress Performance
Like always, we ran the Kiwi Sleep mattress through several tests to determine its cooling capabilities, motion transfer, edge support, and more. Let’s see how it fared!
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Memory foam tends to trap body heat, but that won’t be a problem on the Kiwi Sleep. Because the cushion pockets and innersprings have air channels running throughout, the bed doesn’t sleep hot at night. Plus, its stretch knit cover feels especially thin and breathable.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is an especially important aspect to consider if you share a bed with a partner. If a mattress doesn’t isolate motion well, you could wake up when your partner switches sleeping positions in the night.
Kiwi Sleep has decent motion isolation for a hybrid mattress. I felt a little bit of movement on my side of the bed whenever my partner moved around. This won’t be too much of an issue for many people, but if you’re an especially light sleeper, check out our list of the best mattresses for couples.
Edge Support
If you share a bed with someone, you’ll also want to think about your mattress’s edge support. Mattresses with poor edge support force sleepers to rest near the center of the mattress, making it more difficult for people to utilize the full surface area of the bed.
Fortunately, the Kiwi Sleep mattress has great edge support. You should be able to sit and rest near the side of the mattress without falling off. I could even bend down to tie my shoes while sitting on the side!
Durability
The Kiwi Sleep Mattress should last at least 10 years, which is about three years longer than many other mattresses on the market.
Off-Gassing
Oftentimes, bed-in-a-box mattresses emit a chemical smell at first. We call this “off-gassing,” and it’s completely normal. While the Kiwi Sleep mattress did smell when we first unboxed it, the odor disappeared after 48 hours.
Noise
Innerspring mattresses occasionally squeak, but because the Kiwi Sleep has pocketed coils, it’s completely silent.
Sex
Sexual partners usually look for mattresses that feel bouncy and responsive. If you’re looking for one of the best mattresses for sex, the Kiwi Sleep is a great option. You won’t feel like you’re sinking on this bed, and it’s super easy to move around on.

How Does Kiwi Sleep Compare To Other Mattresses?
When you’re shopping for a new mattress, it’s always smart to weigh your options. To make things easier, we’ll compare the Kiwi Sleep mattress to two other popular beds: The Purple and GhostBed 3D Matrix.
Kiwi Sleep vs Purple
Both the Kiwi Sleep and Purple mattresses have a medium firm feel. However, the Purple mattress may feel firmer for lightweight folks. That’s because this mattress contains the company’s proprietary gel grid, which feels both squishy and firm. Lightweight sleepers won’t compress the material very much, so they won’t feel the same pressure relief that larger people do.
The Kiwi Sleep mattress contains the company’s proprietary cushion pockets. These small memory foam squares cradle the hips and help alleviate lower back pain. This makes it a better pick for lightweight and average weight people. Some heavier people will get the support they need, but the Purple has a slight advantage here.
Both mattresses work well for hot sleepers, but they have different price points. Because the Kiwi Sleep mattress contains high-quality coils, it costs a little bit more than the Purple mattress.
Who Should Get The Kiwi Sleep Mattress?
- People with back pain
- Lightweight and average weight people
- Those who like a responsive and bouncy mattress
Who Should Get The Purple?
- Heavier people
- Those who want a bed with a squishy feel
- People who want to save some money

Kiwi Sleep vs GhostBed 3D Matrix
If you’re looking for a slightly softer mattress, opt for the GhostBed 3D Matrix. This bed comes in at 6/10 on our firmness scale, which is a half point softer than the Kiwi Sleep. It’s important to note, however, that firmness is subjective. Heavier people might sink deeper into the GhostBed’s comfort layer, making it feel firmer and more supportive.
The GhostBed has a traditional construction, but it still contains some impressive materials. The Ghost Ice cover feels cool to the touch, and the 3D Matrix polymer layer prevents sleepers from sinking into the mattress. Like the Kiwi Sleep, the GhostBed 3D Matrix has coils for support.
The GhostBed 3D Matrix might work better for couples, because it has excellent motion isolation. However, the Kiwi Sleep will work better for those with back pain because the cushion pockets provide extraordinary pressure relief and support.
Who Should Get The Kiwi Sleep?
- Fans of medium firm mattresses
- People with back pain
Who Should Get The GhostBed 3D Matrix?
- People who like softer mattresses
- Couples
