Simmons Foam Mattress Overview

With the Simmons bed in a box mattresses, you have a few options. First off, you can select from three firmnesses: Plush, Medium, and Firm. Second, you can choose whether you want an all-foam mattress or a hybrid mattress. The plusher you go, the more the mattress will cost, and the hybrid model also costs a bit more. However, no matter what model you choose, it is going to be a good deal! Even the Plush Hybrid queen size is only around $500.

Today, we’ll be discussing the Simmons Firm Foam mattress specifically. To get you started, here is who the mattress should be a good fit for (and who it might not be).

Who Might Like The Simmons Foam?

  • Back sleepers who want a balance of comfort and support
  • Those who like a slow-moving memory foam feel
  • Shoppers who are looking for one of the best mattresses under $500

Who Might Not Like The Simmons Foam?

  • Those who like a bouncy, responsive mattress

Simmons Foam Mattress Firmness And Feel

When we review a mattress, we always take a look at the firmness and feel first. This will give you an initial idea of whether the Simmons Foam mattress should be right for you.

How Firm Is The Simmons Foam?

The Firm model of the Simmons Foam is close to a 7.0/10, just a bit firmer-than-average. The top layers of the Firm model are quite soft, but they aren’t as thick as what you find on the Plush and Medium models.

Sleeping On The Simmons Foam

Back sleeping on the Simmons Foam, we get a good balance of comfort and support. The memory foam offers some very nice contouring that really takes to the shape of our bodies. The base layer is also giving us just the right amount of support.

Simmons Foam - Back Sleeping

When we are side sleeping, the Firm model is not giving us quite enough pressure relief. We would suggest taking a look at the Medium or Plush model if you are a side sleeper.

Stomach sleeping, the Simmons Firm Foam is providing us some with some okay overall support. That being said, stomach sleepers might want to look at the Simmons Firm Hybrid.

What Does The Simmons Foam Feel Like?

The Simmons Foam has that slow-moving feel we’ve come to expect from a memory foam mattress. When you lie down on the mattress, you should feel yourself slowly sinking in. With the Firm model, you will sink in just a bit and, with the Medium and Plush models, you will sink in much more.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs

If you weigh under 230lbs, you should get the right amount of comfort and support on the Simmons Foam. Side sleepers in this weight range will probably want to look at one of the softer models. Stomach sleeping, the majority of people between 130lbs and 230lbs should get the support that they need.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

Back sleepers who are close to 230lbs should get enough support from the Simmons Foam mattress. However, if you are over 275lbs, you will want to get a mattress for heavy people. Side sleeping, heavyweight people won’t feel the best pressure relief on this mattress, and they will want something with a thicker comfort layer. Even the Medium and Plush Models might not be thick enough for heavier people. If you are a heavyweight stomach sleeper, you will also need to find a more supportive mattress.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

Lightweight people who sleep on their back and stomach should get the right amount of support. However, if they sleep on their side, they still might want to look at the Plush or Medium Simmons Foam models.

Simmons Foam Mattress Construction

Now, let’s take a look inside the Simmons Foam mattress and see exactly how it all works!

Cover

The Simmons Foam features a thin, breathable cover that allows air to pass through the top of the mattress. It is also quilted with a bit of foam for some more softness right on top of the mattress.

Comfort Layer

First off, there is a layer of gel memory foam right on top. This is designed to provide some nice pressure relief, and the gel is intended to help with heat dissipation. Below that, there is a foam transition layer that adds just a touch of bounce to the mattress.

Simmons Foam Mattress - Construction

Support Layer

The Simmons Foam features high-density polyfoam in its support layer.

Mattress Height

The Simmons Firm Foam is 8″ tall, but the Simmons Medium Foam is 10″ tall, and the Plush Foam is 12″ tall.

Simmons Foam Mattress Size Options And Price

If you want the most up to date Simmons Foam size and price information, see our chart below.

Note: These are the sizes and prices for the Firm Foam model. The Medium and Plush are larger and will cost a bit more, as will the hybrid models.

SizeDimensionsPrice
Twin38″ x 74.5″ $329.00
Full53″ x 74.5″$399.00
Queen60″ x 79.5″$429.00
King76″ x 79.5″$499.00

Simmons Foam Mattress Performance

We put the Simmons Foam mattress to the test with regard to cooling, motion transfer, and edge support. Let’s see how it did!

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

Given that it is an all-foam mattress, the Simmons Foam does trap a bit of heat. We can feel ourselves warming up when we sleep on the mattress. The gel infusion does offset this a bit, however.

If you are a hot sleeper, you might want to take a look at the Simmons Hybrid models.

Motion Transfer

The Simmons Firm Foam does have that slow-moving memory foam on top, and this is usually great with motion transfer. The mattress does handle motion transfer quite well, but those who want a mattress for couples still might want to look at the Medium or Plush models.

Edge Support

The Simmons Firm Foam is a thinner mattress and does not provide the best edge support. When we sit near the edge, the mattress collapses quite a bit. Also, when we lie down, we feel like we might roll off the mattress.

Simmons Foam - Edge Support

Durability

The Simmons Foam does not appear to the most durable mattress. It has a simple, straightforward design and is meant to be more of a value mattress. It depends on your weight how often you use the mattress, but it should last for between five and seven years. The Medium and Plush models could last a bit longer with their extra layers of memory foam.

Off-gassing

The Simmons Foam is a bed in a box mattress, so we were not surprised that it let off a chemical smell when we first unboxed it. This is normal for a mattress like this, and it did go away after 48 hours.

Noise

The Simmons Foam does not make too much noise when we roll around. It is a very quiet mattress overall.

Sex

The Simmons Foam mattress should be a good mattress for sex because it is more responsive. It should make it easy for you and your partner to move around on the mattress.

Company Info

When you’re shopping for a mattress, you should always take a look at the fine print. Let’s discuss the Simmons customer service terms:

Warranty Info

The Simmons Foam comes with a 10-year limited warranty. This covers defects in the materials and workmanship. The warranty is void if you don’t use the proper support system or otherwise mistreat the mattress.

Sleep Trial

You have 100 nights to try the Simmons Foam mattress and figure out if it is the right fit for you.

Return Policy

If the Simmons Foam mattress is not working out for you, contact Simmons for a full refund. Simmons only allows one return per household per year.

How Does The Simmons Foam Compare To Other Mattresses?

It’s always a good idea to do some comparison shopping when looking for a mattress. Let’s see how the Simmons Foam compares to the Simmons Hybrid model.

Simmons Foam vs. Simmons Hybrid

The Simmons Foam and Simmons Hybrid mattresses are similar in that they both come in multiple firmness options. Obviously, they both come from Simmons, and they are the best cheap mattresses.

Simmons Hybrid - Construction

That being said, they do have their differences. The main difference can be found in their support layers. The Simmons Foam features base foam while the Simmons Hybrid features coils. This makes the Hybrid mattress more breathable than the Foam mattress, and it is also more supportive.

The addition of coils does make the Simmons Hybrid cost a bit more, however.

Who Should Get The Simmons Foam Mattress?

  • Those who want to spend less on their mattress
  • Fans of a slow-moving foam feel

Who Should Get The Simmons Hybrid Mattress?

  • Hot sleepers
  • Those who need a more supportive mattress
  • Fans of bouncier mattresses
