The Purple Hybrid Premier (previously referred to as the New Purple) and Nectar are both relatively soft, bed-in-a-box options that otherwise differ in many ways. We’ll break down those differences in this post to help you determine which you might prefer. [Editor’s Note: The Purple Hybrid Premier is no longer available. Check out our Purple Original mattress review to learn about other Purple options.]

Key Similarities

  • Both are relatively soft and have responsive surfaces.
  • Both offer an 11″ thick mattress.
  • Both offer free shipping and great customer service.

Key Differences

  • The Purple Hybrid Premier is more expensive  ($3699.00 for the Queen-size Purple Hybrid Premier 4 model; $1099.00 for Queen-size Nectar).
  • Nectar is all-foam with a memory foam feel, while the Purple Hybrid Premier has coils.
  • The Purple Hybrid Premier has multiple firmness options.
  • The Purple Hybrid Premier uses a proprietary material for its top layer that is both pressure-relieving and supportive simultaneously. The Nectar uses a quilted top and a simpler construction.
  • Nectar’s cover fabric is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class 1 certified. OEKO-TEX® is a respected independent environmental testing and certification system that tests to ensure textiles do not use harmful substances.
  • Nectar offers a 365-day trial, while Purple’s trial is 100 days.
  • They have overlapping thicknesses, but the Purple Hybrid Premier has options that run thicker. (Purple is 12″ or 13″ thick, depending on which option you choose; Nectar is 11″ thick.)

Purple Hybrid Premier Construction

  • The Purple Hybrid Premier options range in thickness. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 is a bit firmer than the 4.
  • The top layer of each version of the Purple Hybrid Premier mattress is Purple’s proprietary Smart Comfort Grid. This is a hyper-elastic polymer that is supportive until you put enough pressure onto it to soften it. The thickness of the material corresponds to the firmness level of each mattress. Purple 3 has 3″ of this material; and Purple 4 has 4″.
  • In all versions, half an inch of transition foam separates the gel grid from the coil system beneath. This material is temperature-neutral.
  • Each firmness level has a 7.5″ thick layer of individually wrapped coils. These coils are made with a durable material and offer great support. The coils also help with temperature control.
  • In each mattress, a poly foam outer shell reinforces edge support.
  • The base later is comprised of 1″ of foundational foam that the support coils can rest on.

Nectar Construction

  • Nectar has a unique OEKO-TEX® certified cover material made with long staple cotton and Tencel. The certification means the cover does not contain harmful substances.
  • On top is a quilted gel memory foam, which offers comfort and breathability.
  • Another layer of gel memory foam comes next. Nectar describes this foam as a “semi-open LUSH foam,” and it is designed to absorb and redistribute heat. This type of material is often used in medical settings.
  • The second-to-last layer is 3″ of Hi Core Adaptive foam, which gives extra support. This foam contributes bounce and helps with contour support.
  • The 6″ base layer uses breathable foam designed to draw in fresh air through special channels. This layer is dense and supportive.

Construction Differences/Notes

  • Nectar has more of a sinking, memory foam feel, while the Purple Hybrid Premier is more responsive.
  • Nectar uses a certified non-toxic cover material.
  • Nectar has a quilted top layer and is all-foam.
  • The Purple Hybrid Premier is more supportive because of the steel support coils.
  • The Purple Hybrid Premier is more temperature-neutral and breathable.
  • The Purple Hybrid Premier has multiple firmness options.
  • The Purple Hybrid Premier has coils and thicker options.
  • The Purple Hybrid Premier supports more weight because of the gel material and the steel coils used in the support layer.
  • Both have relatively springy surfaces, although the Purple Hybrid Premier is a little springier.

Firmness/Feel Differences

Both options have responsive surfaces and are relatively soft, but the Purple Hybrid Premier has softer options. Nectar has slower-moving foam on top, giving it a more traditional foam feel.

Motion Transfer Differences

Both models prevent motion transfer well, but the Purple Hybrid Premier has an edge because of its unique top layer material.

Pick The Purple Hybrid Premier If …

  • You are heavier- The Purple Hybrid Premier has coils, better edge support, and options for thicker top layers, making it more supportive and comfortable for people who weigh more. The gel material won’t sag as much as foam, making this mattress quite durable.
  • You sleep hot- The Purple Hybrid Premier has a temperature-neutral sleeping surface, so there are no concerns about sleeping hot.

Pick Nectar If …

  • You are on a budget- Nectar is cheaper, allowing folks to save some money if they just can’t decide which mattress to get.
  • You like a sinking feeling- You will slowly sink into Nectar’s memory foam top layers. This may appeal to people who prefer a memory foam feel. The sleeping surface is much less responsive than the Purple.
