Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Overview

Leesa is a brand that is known for producing high-quality, bed-in-a-box mattresses. The company has seen great success with its Leesa Sapira Hybrid and Leesa Legend mattresses. However, it all began with the Leesa Original, their flagship mattress. The Leesa Original is an extremely comfortable all-foam mattress and is sold for a value price.

Now, Leesa has released the Leesa Original Hybrid which adds the support of coils to the already popular Leesa Original mattress. It is also more budget-friendly than the Sapira Hybrid and Legend.

The Leesa Original Hybrid has a lot to offer, but it will work better for certain types of sleepers.

Who Should Get The Leesa Original Hybrid?

Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Firmness and Feel

When you’re shopping for a new online mattress, it’s always a good idea to think about firmness and feel. This will give you an initial idea of whether a not a mattress will work for your situation.

How Firm is the Leesa Original Hybrid?

The Leesa Original Hybrid has a firmness of 6.5/10, exactly medium-firm on our firmness scale. The top two layers of foam are soft and allow me to sink in just a bit. The coils add some firmness deeper in the mattress. Combined, these layers give the Leesa Original Hybrid a balance of comfort and support.

Sleeping on the Leesa Original Hybrid

When I was back sleeping on the Leesa Original Hybrid, it was a good match for me. I felt my hips sink into the two layers of foam while the foam also pressed up into my lower back. Add in supportive coils, and the Leesa Original Hybrid is a great mattress for back sleepers.

A man sleeps on his back on the Leesa Original Hybrid

Side sleeping, I felt some pressure build-up around my shoulders and hips. I will note that I am 270 lb, so I might have pushed too far into the mattress. See below for how this mattress works for lightweight and average weight side sleepers.

The Leesa Original Hybrid was too soft for me when I was stomach sleeping. I could feel my hips and pelvis sinking down into the mattress. This is not a feeling you want when stomach sleeping, and it can lead to back pain.

What Does the Leesa Original Hybrid Feel Like?

Overall, the Leesa Original Hybrid is a bouncier mattress. The top layer of memory foam features just a bit of the foam’s classic slow-moving feel, but it still bounces back into place very quickly. The transition layer is also quite bouncy, as are the coils in the support layer. Altogether, it’s easy to move around on the Leesa Original Hybrid mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight back sleepers should really love the Leesa Original Hybrid mattress. Medium-firm mattresses with a balance of comfort and support are usually great for back sleepers, and the Leesa Original Hybrid is no exception. You’ll feel some nice cushioning from the foam while the coils hold up your body.

Side sleepers of this body type should feel very comfortable on the Leesa Original Hybrid. If this applies to you, you should feel nice pressure relief from the memory foam and polyfoam layers.

If you weigh closer to 130 lb, you could get enough support while stomach sleeping on the Leesa Original Hybrid. If you weigh closer to 200 lb or more, you will probably want to opt for a firmer, more supportive mattress.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavyweight back sleepers who weigh less than 275 lb should get enough support on the Leesa Original Hybrid. However, if you weigh much more than this, you will want to take a look at a mattress made for heavy people.

Most heavyweight side sleepers will want a mattress with a thicker comfort layer. As a heavier sleeper, I bottomed out on this mattress and felt some pressure on my shoulders and hips. A soft mattress for heavy people like the Brooklyn Bedding Titan Luxe Hybrid could be a good option.

If you are a heavier stomach sleeper, the Leesa Original Hybrid probably won’t offer the support you need.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Medium-firm hybrid mattresses like the Leesa Original Hybrid are usually a good fit for lightweight combination sleepers. If you weigh under 130 lb, you should get the support you need while back and stomach sleeping. The mattress should also feel soft enough for side sleeping.

Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Construction

Let’s pull back the cover of the Leesa Original Hybrid mattress and look at each layer.

Cover

The Leesa Original Hybrid features a soft, twill fabric cover that is breathable and allows for air to flow through the top of the mattress.

Comfort Layers

The top layer of the Leesa Original Hybrid contains soft memory foam. This provides pressure relief and contouring as well.

Below that, the mattress features a thicker layer of responsive polyfoam. This acts as a transition layer and keeps you from sinking too far into the mattress.

Support Layer

We find individually-wrapped coils in the Leesa Original Hybrid’s support layer. These provide support, and they allow for a good amount of airflow.

The coils rest on a thin layer of high-density polyfoam. This provides support for the other layers and keeps the coils from digging into your bed frame or foundation.

Mattress Height

The Leesa Original Hybrid is 11” tall.

Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Performance

I ran the Leesa Original Hybrid mattress through a gauntlet of tests. Let’s see how it performed!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

In my experience, the Leesa Original Hybrid does not sleep too hot. The coils allow a good deal of air to flow through the bottom part of the mattress. The cover is also very breathable and keeps the top of the mattress from trapping too much heat.

That being said, I have slept on cooler mattresses. If you sleep very hot, take a look at our best cooling mattresses roundup.

Motion Transfer

If you sleep with a partner, you want a mattress that handles motion transfer well. Simply put, you don’t want to feel every move your partner makes during the night.

I tested the motion isolation capabilities of the Leesa Original Hybrid, and it performed well. Lying down on one side of the mattress, I asked my coworker to move around on the other side. I did not feel his movements on my side of the Leesa Hybrid mattress.

Anyone looking for a mattress for couples should consider the Leesa Original Hybrid.

Edge Support

Couples and people who want to use the full surface area of their mattress should also consider edge support. If a mattress has solid edge support, you should be able to sleep near the edge without falling off.

A man sits near the edge of the Leesa Original Hybrid

The Leesa Original Hybrid has very good edge support overall. When I sit near the edge, I can comfortably lean over and tie my shoes. Lying down near the edge, I don’t feel like I will roll off.

Durability

Based on its materials and construction, the Leesa Original Hybrid appears to be a durable, long-lasting mattress. Coils add some longevity to a mattress, so it will definitely last longer than the all-foam Leesa Original mattress.

It depends on your weight or how often you use the mattress, but the Leesa Original Hybrid should last for at least seven years.

Off-gassing

The Leesa Original Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress and was delivered to my house in a cardboard box. After I unboxed and unrolled the mattress, I noticed a slight chemical smell.

This is a normal occurrence when unboxing online mattresses, and the smell went away after 48 hours. I simply placed the mattress in a well-ventilated room, and I recommend you do the same!

Noise

When I move around on the Leesa Original Hybrid mattress, it does not make any real noise. Even though it contains coils, I am not hearing any squeaking or creaking.

However, hybrid and innerspring mattresses might start to squeak after you have used them for a number of years. Once you hear this, it might be time to get a new mattress.

Sex

If you and your partner are looking for a good mattress for sex, a bouncier hybrid mattress is always a good option. This will make it easier for you and your partner to move around on the mattress.

The Leesa Original Hybrid is indeed a bouncy mattress, and it should be a great mattress for sex.

How Does The Leesa Original Hybrid Compare To Other Mattresses?

It’s always a good idea to do some comparison shopping when you’re looking for a new mattress. Let’s see how the Leesa Original Hybrid compares to similar mattresses.

Leesa Original Hybrid vs Leesa Original

First off, the Leesa Original Hybrid and Leesa Original all-foam mattress do have their similarities. They have similar comfort layers, covers, and firmnesses as well. They are also both more responsive mattresses.

The main difference between these two mattresses can be found in their support layers. The Leesa Original Hybrid features coils while the Leesa Original contains foam. This makes the hybrid feel bouncier than the all-foam model. Also, the coils allow for more airflow and offer more support than Original’s base foam.

With the addition of coils, the hybrid costs more than the Leesa Original all-foam mattress.
