Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Overview
Helix sells six different mattresses, and each one is available in their Core, Luxe and Elite lines. The models in each line range from very soft to very firm. The brand’s absolute softest mattress is the Helix Sunset Luxe; it has extra cooling materials and a comfortable pillow top.
Because it’s a softer mattress, the Helix Sunset Luxe works better for certain types of sleepers more than others.
Pros of the Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress
- Because it’s so soft, it works well for side sleepers. The plush comfort layers cushion pressure points and help alleviate joint pain.
- If you love soft mattresses, this is a great option for you. Coming in at 5.5/10 on our firmness scale, the Helix Sunset Luxe mattress is a whole point softer than the industry standard of medium-firm.
- It’s a high-end luxury mattress that has a plush pillow top and impressive cooling features.
Cons of the Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress
- Stomach sleepers won’t get enough support on the Helix Sunset Luxe mattress. In this sleeping position, you will likely feel your hips sinking out of alignment, which can cause lower back pain.
- It’s not a good match for people who prefer firm mattresses. If you need more lumbar support, you may want to consider the Helix Dawn Luxe mattress instead.
- Because it’s so luxurious, it has a higher price tag. If you are on a budget, you may want to get one of the best cheap mattresses.

Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Firmness and Feel
When you’re shopping for a mattress, two of the most important things you should think about are firmness and feel. These criteria will determine whether or not a mattress will work for you.
How Firm Is The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress?
On a firmness scale of 1-10, the Helix Sunset Luxe is a 5.5/10. The industry standard for medium-firm is 6.5/10, so the Helix Sunset Luxe is definitely softer than average. The mattress has plush materials on top, which lets you gently “sink” into the bed.
Sleeping On The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress
Back sleeping on the Helix Sunset Luxe was not the best for me. Back sleepers usually want something closer to medium-firm, and the Helix Sunset Luxe is much softer than that. I didn’t feel like I got the support I needed, and I felt a bit like I was falling into the mattress. Back sleepers should take a look at the Helix Midnight Luxe or Helix Dusk Luxe.
The Sunset Luxe really shines when side sleeping. I sank into the plush pillow top and felt almost no pressure on my shoulders and hips. I also felt the zoning in the coils; the firmer center area of the coils pressed into the area just below my rib cage. This helped keep my spine aligned while I slept. Side sleepers should also check out the Helix Moonlight Luxe, another one of Helix’s soft mattresses.
Stomach sleepers do better with firm mattresses that will keep their hips elevated. The softer Helix Sunset Luxe did not give me enough support under my hips, and I could feel my hips and pelvis dipping into the mattress. This was definitely uncomfortable and I felt that it could lead to back pain over time. Stomach sleepers should consider the Helix Dawn Luxe or Helix Twilight Luxe, which are two of Helix’s firmer models.
What Does The Helix Sunset Luxe Feel Like?
The Helix Sunset Luxe is a hybrid mattress, so it is more responsive than all-foam beds. The coils add some bounce to the mattress, and this responsiveness makes it very easy to move around and change positions. On top of the mattress, the pillow top gives the mattress a plush feel. Beneath that, you get just a bit of that memory foam feel.
Sleeper Weight | Back Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight (Under 130 lb) | Good | Excellent | Fair |
Average (130 – 230 lb) | Fair | Excellent | Bad |
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb) | Bad | Fair | Bad |
Is The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?
- Lightweight back sleepers could find the Sunset Luxe supportive enough, but many people will prefer a firmer mattress such as the Helix Midnight Luxe or Helix Dusk Luxe.
- Lightweight side sleepers should feel great sleeping on the Helix Sunset Luxe. The plush pillow top will cushion joints and help prevent pain.
- Lightweight stomach sleepers could feel okay on the Sunset Luxe, but it is not ideal. People in this category may need a bit more hip support.
Is The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?
- Back sleepers who weigh closer to 130 lb could get enough support on this mattress, but heavier people may fare better with the Helix Midnight Luxe or Helix Dusk Luxe.
- It’s a great choice for average weight side sleepers. The soft comfort layers help alleviate pressure along shoulders and hips, and the zoned coils help keep the spine aligned.
- Stomach sleepers will need a firmer mattress in order to maintain the proper spinal alignment.
Is The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?
- The Helix Sunset Luxe is too soft for heavyweight back sleepers.
- Side sleepers who weigh less than 275 lb should feel nice pressure relief on their shoulders and hips. If you weigh more than this, take a look at the Helix Plus or one of our best mattresses for heavy people.
- Heavyweight stomach sleepers will need a firmer, more supportive mattress.
Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Construction
Let’s unzip the cover of the Helix Sunset Luxe and discuss exactly what is inside.
Cover
With the Helix Luxe mattresses, you have a choice of covers. First off, they offer their standard Tencel cover which is breathable and soft. Second, for an additional few hundred dollars, you can opt for their GlacioTex™ cooling cover. This cover is cool to the touch and is designed to draw heat away from your body.
Comfort Layers
The Helix Sunset Luxe has a soft pillow top. This is plusher than the pillow tops you find on the other Helix Luxe mattresses.
Below that sits a layer of Helix Responsive Foam. This adds more cushioning to the top of the mattress and offers pressure relief. This rests on top of a layer of Copper Gel Memory Foam, which is designed to pull heat away from the body. Finally, you have a transition layer made out of Helix Responsive Foam. This keeps you from bottoming out on the mattress and feeling the coils in the support layer.
Support Layers
The main support layer consists of pocketed coils with a zoned design. This means the coils toward the center of the mattress are firmer and provide extra lumbar support.
On the bottom of the mattress, there is a base layer of DuraDense Foam. This supports the other layers and keeps the coils from poking into your bed frame or foundation.
Mattress Height
The Helix Sunset Luxe mattress is 13.5” tall.

Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Performance
I ran the Helix Sunset Luxe through a gauntlet of tests. Let’s see how it performed:
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Overall, the Helix Sunset Luxe sleeps quite cool. The coils allow for a great deal of airflow, and the top foam layers are designed not to trap heat. I also reviewed the model with the cooling cover, and I can say it adds even more cooling properties to the mattress.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is important if you sleep with a partner, because you will want a mattress that will isolate each person’s movements to their side of the bed.
The Helix Sunset Luxe performed well during my tests. Lying down on one side of the mattress, I asked my coworker to roll around on the other side. I did not feel his movements on my side of the mattress. This means the Helix Sunset Luxe could be a good mattress for couples.
Edge Support
The Helix Sunset Luxe features some excellent edge support. I felt very secure when I was sitting and lying down near the edge of the mattress. If you sleep with a partner or simply like sleeping toward the edge of the mattress, the Helix Sunset Luxe should be a good match.
Durability
The Helix Sunset Luxe is a luxury mattress that boasts some very durable materials. Based on its construction and materials, the mattress should last at least 10 years.
Off-gassing
The Helix Sunset Luxe is a bed-in-a-box mattress, and it arrived at my house in a cardboard box. Unboxing the Helix Sunset Luxe, there was a slight chemical smell, but this is normal with online mattresses. The phenomenon is called off-gassing and occurs as the mattress releases gasses that were trapped during compression.
I put the Helix Sunset Luxe in a ventilated room, and the off-gassing dissipated after about 48 hours.
Noise
The Helix Sunset Luxe did not make any noise when I moved around on it. The coils weren’t squeaking at all, but this could be an issue after 10 or so years.
Sex
Sexual partners usually do better on bouncier, more responsive mattresses. The Helix Sunset Luxe is bouncy and should be a good mattress for sex.
Company Policies
Let’s take a look at Helix’s fine print.
Warranty Info
Helix Luxe mattresses are backed by 15-year limited warranties. Important note: Removing the cover from your Helix mattress automatically voids the warranty.
Sleep Trial
The Helix Sunset Luxe comes with a 100-night sleep trial period. This gives you about three months to try out your mattress before issuing a return.
Return Policy
As long as you return your mattress during the 100-night trial period, you can get a full refund.

The Helix Sunset and Helix Sunset Luxe are similar in that they both contain individually-wrapped coils, Copper Gel Memory Foam and Helix Responsive Foam. The similarities end there, however. The Helix Sunset Luxe features an additional pillow top and optional cooling cover. Its coils are also zoned and offer targeted support, while the Helix Sunset’s coils do not.
The pillow top also gives the Helix Sunset Luxe a plush feel. The Helix Sunset has more of a balanced hybrid feel.
The main difference between the Sunset and Sunset Luxe has to do with price. With its extra materials and luxurious design, the Sunset Luxe costs almost twice as much as the Sunset.

Both mattresses work well for side sleepers, but other than that, they don’t have a lot in common. The Helix Sunset Luxe mattress is a hybrid mattress with zoned coils, which gives it a bouncy and responsive feel. The Nectar Premier mattress is an all-foam bed with more of a slow-moving feel. If you want more body contouring, the Nectar Premier may be the better choice.
The Nectar Premier is slightly firmer than the Helix Sunset Luxe, coming in at 6/10 on our scale. And while the Nectar Premier mattress has many cooling features, like gel memory foam and a breathable cover, the Helix Sunset Luxe sleeps cooler thanks to its airflow-promoting coils. That said, the Nectar Premier costs much less than the Helix Sunset Luxe.
