I recommend the Helix Plus Luxe for…
- Heavier back and side sleepers. The Mattress Clarity team defines “heavyweight” as those over 230 lbs. Like the Helix Plus, the Plus Luxe is specifically engineered to meet the needs of this body type, thanks to a combination of durable materials and mindful construction. Back and side sleepers will appreciate the lumbar support and cushioning pillow top.
- Fans of a pillow top feel. The Luxe collection from Helix includes various upgrades, including a premium quilted pillow top, and the Plus Luxe is no exception.
- Hot sleepers. The hybrid construction and choice of cooling cover materials makes this a great option if you’re worried about overheating.
I don’t recommend the Helix Plus Luxe for…
- Heavier stomach sleepers. The Plus Luxe has a medium-firm feel. This works well for back and side sleepers, but it’s not supportive enough for most stomach sleepers. Most heavier stomach sleepers will want to go for the regular Helix Plus because of its firmer feel. We also recommend looking at our list of mattresses for stomach sleepers if this is your preferred sleeping position.
- Fans of a memory foam feel. The upper foam layers are slow-moving, but the support layer is bouncy and responsive. This hybrid mattress won’t contour your body like many all-foam mattresses do.
- Lightweight people. This mattress is made to meet the needs of heavier sleepers, so it’s going to feel far too firm for lightweight sleepers. For those people, we recommend taking a look at our picks for best mattresses for lightweight sleepers.
Helix Plus Luxe Mattress Test Performance: My Overall Thoughts
To thoroughly assess the performance of every mattress we test, we use specific categories and assign a score for each. After compiling the scores of each test, the Helix Plus Luxe earned an average score of 4.5/5. It earned especially high marks in support, cooling ability, motion isolation and durability.
Ahead, I’ll go into more detail on the Helix Plus Luxe’s performance in each category. For a category description, scroll over the category names in the chart below.
Helix Plus Luxe Mattress Performance
Support: 4.5/5
To test the level of support in the Helix Plus Luxe, I moved quickly from all three sleeping positions (back, side, stomach). I have to say, support was an easy 5/5 for me on my back and side. The mattress is made for larger people, and that’s evident in the substantial support of both the high-density foam and the extra-supportive coils. There is some plushness on top, thanks to the pillow top, but it doesn’t take away from the overall feeling of stable support.
On my stomach, I felt my hips sink out of alignment. For that reason, I didn’t give the Helix Plus Luxe a perfect score. It comes in just shy of perfection at 4.5/5.
Edge Support: 4/5
Edge support describes how secure you feel sitting or laying near the edge of the bed, and that’s exactly how I tested it.
The Helix Plus Luxe sagged about 3.75 inches when I sat on the edge, which really isn’t much. I could feel that it was the top layers of foam collapsing and not the coils below. I didn’t feel like I was going to fall forward while sitting here. When I was lying down along the perimeter of the mattress, I didn’t feel that I was in danger rolling off onto the floor. All in all, the Helix Plus Luxe has great edge support.
Cooling: 4.5/5
While I didn’t particularly notice hot spots when I was testing the Helix Plus Luxe, I used a temperature gun to be accurate. I measured the mattress before using it, and then again after I rested on it for five minutes.
The mattress went from 69.8 F to 75.2 F, which is a bit over 5 degrees. In other words, the mattress didn’t trap a significant amount of body heat when I lay on it. Note that the Helix Plus Luxe I tested has the standard Tencel cover, not the cooling GlacioTex™ which is available as an optional upgrade. For especially hot sleepers, it’s likely worth the extra money, but the average person shouldn’t find the Helix Plus Luxe overly warm.
Motion Transfer: 4.5/5
Motion transfer refers to how much movement is felt in a mattress. This is a particular issue for couples who share a bed. I test motion transfer in a few ways. First, I place a glass of water in the center of the mattress and then press down on other areas to determine the level of disturbance in the water. The Helix Plus Luxe performed quite well here, with minimal disturbance to the water.
I also test the mattress with a teammate who gets in and out of bed and changes positions. When I rested on one side of the mattress while my teammate did their best to jostle me, I couldn’t feel their movements transfer to my side. That makes the Helix Plus Luxe a great option for couples.
Response: 4/5
The faster a mattress’s response time, the easier it is to move around on it. The tall coils in the Helix Plus Luxe add good bounce, but it’s slightly tempered by the thick foams on top, which give the mattress the hint of a slow-moving feel. It’s easy to move around on this mattress, but it’s not comparable to something like a latex hybrid.
Durability: 4.5/5
It’s hard to predict how long a mattress is going to last, but based on its construction and materials, the Helix Plus Luxe seems to be a very durable hybrid mattress. Its higher-density materials should do a good job of resisting premature sagging, which can be an issue for heavier sleepers on standard mattresses. It’s reasonable to expect this mattress to last about 10 years.
Helix Plus Luxe Mattress Company Policy Scores
Trial Period: 5/5
The Helix Plus Luxe has a 100-night trial period, which is standard for all Helix mattresses. That’s slightly more than three months to determine whether it’s a good fit for you. One hundred nights is fairly standard for sleep trials in the mattress industry, and it’s a reasonable timeframe for breaking in a mattress.
Keep in mind that most mattress companies, including Helix, won’t accept returns before 30 days. That’s because it can take up to a month to adjust to a new mattress. If you decide you don’t like the Helix Plus Luxe, returns are accepted on days 31 through 100 for a full refund.
Warranty: 5/5
All of the mattresses in Helix’s Luxe collection are backed by a 15-year warranty, which is slightly longer than the industry standard of 10 years. It covers manufacturing defects, but intentional damage will void the warranty.
Helix Plus Luxe Mattress – Other Factors to Consider
I’ve gone over the Helix Plus Luxe mattress in detail, but I tested the mattress in a few other ways to give you the most comprehensive idea of its performance.
Two-Hour Nap
For the nap test, I started on my back but woke up on my side. I slept well in both positions, with no soreness around my hips and shoulders. I felt comfortably supported in both positions.
Again, I tested the Helix Plus Luxe with the standard cover and didn’t overheat at all. The hybrid construction gets some of the credit for that — the coils promote breathability. In the Plus Luxe, they’re reinforced for the extra support that heavier bodies need.
Off-gassing
As a bed-in-a-box mattress, the Helix Plus Luxe ships rolled tightly and wrapped in plastic. When I opened the box and cut away the plastic to allow the mattress to expand, there was a slight chemical smell. But it was minimal and dissipated completely after about 48 hours.
Noise
I heard no noise when I moved around on this mattress, but then again, it was brand new. Since it’s a hybrid, there’s a possibility that it could start to squeak after a number of years.
Sex
Couples in search of a good mattress for sex should consider hybrids with a good amount of bounce. The Helix Plus Luxe has good response, so it should be a great option for sexual partners. Again, it is not quite as bouncy as a latex mattress, but you’re not going to have trouble moving around on this mattress.
Mattress Height
Because it’s part of the Luxe collection, this mattress is on the taller side at 13.5”. That’s a little taller than the industry average, which is between 10” and 12” tall.
Sleeping Position and Weight
Mattress comfort hinges on individual body types and sleeping positions. Since the Helix Plus Luxe is engineered for heavier bodies, it’s probably not the best option for the majority of lightweight and average-weight people.
I fall into the heavyweight category and I found the Helix Plus Luxe worked well for me on my back and my side. The support layers ensured proper spinal alignment, and the cushioning pillow top contoured nicely around my hips and shoulders.
For lightweight sleepers, the medium-firm feel could veer too firm. Remember, this bed is designed to support more weight, so it’s likely going to feel too firm for those who don’t sink in somewhat. Some average-weight back and stomach sleepers may find it works, but side sleepers will probably find it’s not nearly cushioning enough.
Take a look at my chart below for a quick and easy reference to see how the Contour5 will work for your body type and sleeping position.
Sleeper Weight | Back Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight (130 lbs or under) | Good | Bad | Excellent |
Average-weight (130 to 230 lbs) | Good | Good | Good |
Heavyweight (230 lbs and up) | Excellent | Good | Good |
Heavyweight Tester – 6’7”, 270 lbs
“This worked well for me on my back and my side. It has a medium firmness, so this is no surprise. Most heavier stomach sleepers will want to go for the regular Helix Plus.” – Marten
Average Weight Tester – 5’3”, 150 lbs
“This was nice when I was on my back, but I found it a little firm for side sleeping. On my stomach, I got plenty of support, but it was firm enough to border on uncomfortable. Since it’s made for larger people, I think I’d be better off on one of the other Luxe mattresses.” – Elisa
Helix Plus Luxe Mattress Construction
Let’s review the materials that go into the Helix Plus Luxe.
Cover
The Helix Plus Luxe comes standard with a breathable Tencel cover. It’s soft to the touch and does a good job of allowing air to flow. There’s also an optional upgrade to the GlacioTex Cooling Cover, which includes fibers designed to actively wick away heat.
Comfort Layers
The top foam layer is made with higher-density Helix Responsive foam. It has a medium-firm feel, and it’s designed to contour for support and comfort. You can also upgrade to the ErgoAlign contour layer, which is a zoned top layer with a section of ultra-dense foam in the center third of the mattress that adds additional support and pressure relief.
Next is a layer of Ultra Dense Helix Dynamic Foam, which is designed to cradle the body in all sleep positions. This layer also keeps you from sinking too deeply into the mattress.
Support Layers
The support layer of the Helix Plus Luxe is made with up to 1,000 TitanCore steel coils. These individually-wrapped coils are fully reinforced to cradle the body, support a straight spine, and add strength to the lumbar zone and perimeter.
At the base of the mattress is a layer of DuraDense foam, which adds structure and stability to the layers above.
How to Try and Buy the Helix Plus Luxe Mattress
Since Helix is an online mattress brand, you can’t test its products in stores. On the plus side, Helix offers a 100-night trial so you can try its mattresses in the comfort of your own home.

Helix Plus Luxe vs Helix Plus
The Helix Plus Luxe is the premium version of the Helix Plus, so it has a few upgrades. First is the plush pillow top, a feature you won’t find on the Helix Plus unless you opt for the GlacioTex upgrade. The pillow top gives the Helix Plus Luxe a cushioning feel, while the standard Helix Plus has a more responsive and balanced foam feel.
The Helix Plus is firmer than the Plus Luxe, which makes it better suited to dedicated stomach sleepers. Back and side sleepers, however, will do best on the Plus Luxe.
The taller Helix Plus Luxe also costs more than the Helix Plus, so if you’re working with a budget, that’s worth keeping in mind. For more information, read my Helix Plus mattress review.
Helix Plus Luxe vs Helix Midnight Luxe
The Helix Plus Luxe and the Helix Midnight Luxe are both part of the Luxe collection, so they share a similar look and feel. The main difference is the level of support. Both are medium-firm, but the Luxe is engineered to handle more weight, so it’s the better choice for heavier bodies. Most average-weight sleepers will get exactly what they need on the Midnight Luxe.
Read my Helix Midnight Luxe review for a deeper dive into this mattress.
Helix Plus Luxe vs Titan Plus Luxe
The Helix Plus Luxe and the Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Luxe are both made with the needs of heavier people in mind. They share the same medium-firm feel and both offer plush pillow tops.
I tested the Titan Plus Luxe mattress, and I found the Helix Plus Luxe feels more supportive and appears to have more durable materials. But you’ll pay more for the Helix Plus Luxe mattress, so if your budget is tight, the Titan Plus Luxe may be the better option.
