Helix Dusk Mattress Firmness And Feel

Whenever you’re shopping for a new mattress, firmness and feel should be your primary criteria for assessing different options. These factors will majorly influence whether a given mattress is well suited to your preferred sleep style and other sleep needs. So let’s get to know the Helix Dusk better by taking a look at its firmness and feel!

How Firm Is The Helix Dusk?

We ranked the Helix Dusk mattress around a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests the Helix Dusk is just a touch firmer-than-average.

We should note that firmness is a bit of a subjective measurement. Your perception of the Helix Dusk’s firmness could differ slightly from ours depending on your body weight and personal preferences.

Sleeping On The Helix Dusk

The Helix Dusk is one of the more supportive models in the Helix line, which helps explain why we felt especially great while back sleeping on this mattress. Our hips stayed elevated and aligned with our spine, and we’re confident that we’ll enjoy proper spinal alignment all night long.

Because it’s on the firmer side, the Helix Dusk is not the best match for side sleepers. We experienced some pressure around the shoulder and hip, and we couldn’t stay comfortable in this position throughout the entire night. Most strict side sleepers will probably want to look at the softer Helix Sunset or Helix Moonlight, although lightweight side sleepers might find enough comfort here.

Thanks to its supportive nature, the Helix Dusk should offer adequate spinal support to many stomach sleepersparticularly folks who are lightweight or average weight. However, heavier-weight stomach sleepers might find that their hips sink too far into the mattress and pull the spine out of alignment. (More on how this mattress suits different body weights below!)

Helix Dusk - Stomach Sleeping

What Does The Helix Dusk Feel Like?

The hybrid Helix Dusk has a firm, bouncy feel. That’s thanks to a dynamic and responsive foam in the top layer as well as the bouncy coils in the bed’s support layer.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs

The Helix Dusk is a great match for average-weight back sleepers, who should enjoy plenty of spinal support and a touch of pressure relief in this position. Side sleepers who are on the lighter end of the weight spectrum might obtain enough pressure relief in this position, but side sleepers weighing much more than 130 pounds will probably find that this bed feels too firm. The firmer nature of this mattress should suit most average-weight stomach sleepers.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

The Helix Dusk should be supportive enough for most heavyweight back sleepers, although folks who weigh more than 300 pounds might want to look for a dedicated mattress for heavy people. Heavyweight side sleepers will almost definitely find that this mattress feels too firm and causes pressure around the shoulder and hip. Even though it’s fairly firm, the Helix Dusk might not be supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers, who could find that their hips bow into the mattress and tug the spine out of alignment.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

Lightweight back sleepers should enjoy plenty of spinal support on the Helix Dusk. Lightweight side sleepers who don’t require a ton of plushness or body contouring could stay comfortable in this position. And the supportive nature of the Helix Dusk means lightweight stomach sleepers should remain well-supported throughout the night.

Helix Dusk Mattress Construction

Now that you know what it’s like to sleep on top of the Helix Dusk, let’s pop the hood (or, er, cover) on this mattress and take a peek at what’s inside! We’ll review this bed’s construction layer by layer and reveal how different materials influence performance.

Cover

The Helix Dusk features your choice of either a Breathe Knit cover or GlacioTex™ Cooling Pillow Top. Both are breathable, but the GlacioTex™ will make the mattress plusher and cooler.

Comfort Layers

The main comfort layer on the Helix Dusk is made from Helix Dynamic Foam, the Helix brand’s latex-foam alternative. This material is fairly bouncy and responsive, which contributes to the bed’s bouncy feel. Underneath this Dynamic Foam, there’s a layer of medium-firm Helix Responsive Foam, which offers a balance of comfort and support. Another layer of medium-firm Helix Responsive Foam rests under this and acts as a transition layer.

Helix Dusk Construction

Support Layer

True to its hybrid form, the Helix Dusk’s support layer is composed of individually-wrapped coils that lend bounce and support to the entire mattress. These coils rest on a DuraDense Foam that maintains the mattress’s overall structure.

Mattress Height

The Helix Dusk mattress is 12” tall.

Helix Dusk Mattress Performance

If you’ve read this far, congratulations: You know a ton about the Helix Dusk mattress! But we’re not done with this review yet, because there are still several important factors to consider. We put the Helix Dusk through a whole gamut of tests with regards to temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and more. Let’s see how it did!

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

Overall, the Helix Dusk does a great job of sleeping cool. Its cover is breathable, and the coils allow for plenty of airflow through the mattress, so it shouldn’t trap much heat. If you’re still worried about overheating, consider upgrading to the Luxe model, which boasts even more design features to create a cooling mattress.

Motion Transfer

Because this is a bouncy mattress, the Helix Dusk does okay but not great when it comes to motion transfer. There’s some bounce on top of the mattress, which means partners might feel each other’s movements during the night. Keep this in mind if you’re hunting for a mattress for couples.

Edge Support

We encountered sound edge support on the Helix Dusk thanks in large part to the supportive coils. We felt secure while sitting and lying down near the edges of this mattress.

Durability

The Helix Dusk boasts high-density foams and sturdy coils, which means this should be a longer-lasting mattress that won’t sag.

Off-Gassing

We did observe some initial off-gassing from the Helix Dusk. This odor should dissipate within a couple of days.

Noise

At the time of this review, we observed just a touch of noise from the Helix Dusk’s springs. It’s possible this noise might get a bit louder as time goes on.

Sex

A good mattress for sex makes it easy for partners to change positions on top of the bed. Because the Helix Dusk has a bouncy and responsive feel, it should be a great choice. Partners should find that it’s easy to move around on top of this mattress.

Company Policies

Now, let’s take a closer look at the fine print for the Helix Dusk mattress:

Warranty Info

The Helix Dusk comes with a 10-year limited warranty. This covers all manufacturing defects and is void if you use the incorrect frame of foundation or otherwise mistreat the mattress.

Sleep Trial

You have 100 nights to decide whether the Helix Dusk is the right fit for you or not.

Return Policy

Helix asks that you try the mattress for 30 nights before you return your mattress. If between 30 and 100 nights, you don’t think the mattress is working for you, you can return for a full refund. Just schedule with Helix, and they will pick up the mattress for you.

How Does The Helix Dusk Compare To Other Mattresses?

If you’re considering the Helix Dusk, you’ve probably scoped out other online mattresses as well. It’s always a good idea to conduct some comparison shopping because this helps you feel more confident in your ultimate decision. So let’s take a look at how the Helix Dusk stacks up beside two of its biggest bed-in-a-box competitors: the Nectar and the original Purple mattress.

Also, to see how Helix compares to other mattress brands, take a look at our Helix mattress comparisons.

Helix Vs. Nectar

The Helix Dusk and Nectar mattresses differ significantly when it comes to their construction. The Helix Dusk features a classic hybrid construction that layers foams over coils, while the Nectar is an all-foam mattress.

Nectar Mattress - Construction And Foam Layers

Because they feature such different constructions, it’s probably not surprising that the Helix Dusk and Nectar have notably different feels. The Helix Dusk is bouncier and more responsive, while the Nectar offers the slower-moving feel of memory foam.

Even though these beds are constructed differently, they’re closely matched when it comes to durability. Both the Helix Dusk and the Nectar should be long-lasting mattresses, but the Helix Dusk might win out here thanks to its extra-durable coils.

These beds differ slightly when it comes to firmness. We ranked the Helix Dusk around 7/10, or a bit firmer-than-average, while the Nectar is a bit softer at around 6.5/10 (or around medium-firm).

The Helix Dusk and Nectar are also distinguished in terms of price. The Helix Dusk costs around $1373.80 for a Queen, while the Nectar is a bit pricier at $1099.00 for the same size.

Who Should Get The Helix Dusk?

  • Hot sleepers who need a mattress that sleeps cool
  • Folks who are looking to save some money

Who Should Get The Nectar?

  • Side sleepers, who need more pressure relief
  • People who prefer a memory foam feel

Learn more about the Nectar in our in-depth Nectar mattress review.

Helix Vs. Purple

The Helix Dusk and the original Purple mattress vary greatly in terms of their construction. The hybrid Helix Dusk layers foams over coils, while the Purple’s comfort layer features a unique hyper-elastic gel polymer grid.

Purple Mattress - Construction And Layers

Thanks to their different constructions, these mattresses differ significantly when it comes to feel. The Helix Dusk has a bouncy and responsive hybrid mattress feel, while the Purple has a unique, gel-like feel that is simultaneously squishy and firm.

The different materials in these beds also affect durability. The Purple’s unique gel grid is exceptionally durable, which should make this the longer-lasting of these two mattresses.

The Helix Dusk and Purple also differ when it comes to firmness. We ranked the Helix Dusk around 7/10, while the Purple feels a touch softer at 6.5/10.

Price is also a point of delineation between these two mattresses. The Helix Dusk costs around $1373.80 for a Queen, while the original Purple costs a bit more at around $1499.00 for the same size.

Who Should Get The Helix Dusk?

  • Lightweight people
  • Fans of a traditional mattress feel

Who Should Get The Purple?

  • Heavier people, who should enjoy plenty of support
  • Hot sleepers who want a temperature-neutral mattress
  • Folks who are looking for an exceptionally durable mattress
