Helix Dawn Luxe Mattress Overview

Helix offers a number of hybrid mattress models with a variety of firmnesses. The brand features a sleep quiz on its website to help you find the right model for your situation. If you like luxurious firm mattresses, Helix may recommend the Helix Dawn Luxe, a firm, luxury model. It boasts a comfortable pillow top, advanced cooling features, and a lot more.

Pros of the Helix Dawn Luxe Mattress

  • The Helix Dawn Luxe is firmer than the industry standard for medium firmness. Firm mattresses are ideal for most stomach sleepers and some back sleepers.
  • This mattress has several features that make it great for hot sleepers. It comes with a Tencel cooling cover and pocketed coils to allow for airflow throughout and prevent overheating.
  • The Helix Dawn Luxe has a luxury construction and is made with materials made to last. You can expect this mattress to last at least 10 years without sagging.

Cons of the Helix Dawn Luxe Mattress

  • Fans of a soft, slow-moving feel should consider mattresses with a different construction than the Helix Dawn Luxe. This mattress has a bouncier feel that doesn’t allow for someone to sink too far into its comfort layer.
  • The Helix Dawn Luxe is not designed with side sleepers in mind. Most side sleepers need a medium-firm or soft mattress to allow their hips and shoulders to be comfortably supported.
  • This luxury mattress comes at a price point that could be out of someone’s budget. Helix’s Standard line of mattresses are more affordable than their Luxe line of corresponding mattresses.

Helix Dawn Luxe Firmness And Feel

When you’re shopping for a new mattress, it’s a good idea to think about firmness and feel. This will help you know if a mattress is going to work for your sleeping preferences.

How Firm Is The Helix Dawn Luxe?

On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, the Helix Dawn Luxe scores a 7.5/10. 6.5/10 is the industry standard for medium-firm, so the Helix Dawn Luxe is firmer than average. The coils are very supportive and the top foam layers are dense and have a firm feel.

Sleeping On The Helix Dawn Luxe

When I was back sleeping on the Helix Dawn Luxe, it felt a bit too firm for me. Back sleepers usually fare better on medium-firm mattresses because they will get the necessary balance of comfort and support. The firm Helix Dawn Luxe didn’t let my hips sink in far enough. That being said, it could work for back sleepers who simply prefer a firmer mattress.

Side sleeping, the Helix Dawn Luxe was also too firm for me. Side sleepers are going to want something softer that will relieve pressure on the shoulders and hips. I felt a good deal of pressure building up in those areas. The Helix Sunset Luxe and Helix Moonlight Luxe are softer and should provide better pressure relief.

While the mattress was too firm for back sleeping and side sleeping, it was perfect for stomach sleeping. Stomach sleepers should always try to find the most supportive mattress possible, and the Helix Dawn Luxe is definitely that. I felt excellent support under my hips and across my entire body.

What Does The Helix Dawn Luxe Feel Like?

Overall, the Helix Dawn Luxe has a bouncier hybrid feel. Lying down, I didn’t sink too far into the mattress and the combination of coils and responsive foams made it very easy to move around. It gave me the feeling that I was sleeping on top of the mattress, rather than sinking into it.

Sleeper WeightBack SleepersSide SleepersStomach Sleepers
Lightweight (Under 130 lb)BadBadExcellent
Average (130 – 230 lb)FairBadExcellent
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb)GoodBadGood

Is the Helix Dawn Luxe Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?

  • The Helix Dawn Luxe will be too firm for lightweight back sleepers. Back sleepers should consider a medium-firm model like the Helix Midnight Luxe.
  • This mattress will also be too firm for lightweight side sleepers. Side sleepers should prefer the Helix Moonlight Luxe or the Helix Sunset Luxe, the brand’s softest models.
  • Lightweight stomach sleepers will get plenty of support from the Helix Dawn Luxe. If you want another firm option, the Helix Twilight Luxe will be a good choice.

Is the Helix Dawn Luxe Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?

  • Average weight back sleepers will probably think this Helix mattress feels too firm. Some average weight back sleepers who prefer a firm mattress could like it, but most will want to consider a medium-firm mattress like the Helix Dusk Luxe or Helix Midnight Luxe.
  • The majority of average weight side sleepers will want to find a softer mattress that will provide cushioning and contouring around their pressure points. The firm Helix Dawn Luxe could cause serious discomfort on side sleepers’ shoulders and hips.
  • Average weight stomach sleepers should love sleeping on the Helix Dawn Luxe. If this is your body type, you shouldn’t feel your hips sinking down into the mattress, and you should experience great overall support.

Is the Helix Dawn Luxe Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?

  • Heavyweight back sleepers might find the Helix Dawn Luxe to be a good match. However, back sleepers over 300 lb will want a more supportive mattress and should take a look at the Helix Plus, the brand’s mattress for heavy people.
  • If you are a larger side sleeper, you should feel better pressure relief than average weight side sleepers. That being said, the Helix Dawn Luxe really isn’t made for side sleeping. If you weigh under 300 lb, the medium-firm or soft Helix Luxe models will offer much more pressure relief.
  • Heavy stomach sleepers who weigh less than 300 lb should get enough support from the Helix Dawn Luxe. Those who weigh more than that will need a more supportive mattress overall.

Helix Dawn Luxe Mattress Construction

What materials make up the Helix Dawn Luxe? Let’s discuss them one by one.

Cover

The Helix Luxe mattresses all come with a choice of two covers. The base Luxe models feature a thin and breathable cover that is made of Tencel, an eco-friendly rayon fabric. For a few hundred dollars more, you can add a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover to your Luxe mattress. This adds more cooling properties to the mattress and feels cool to the touch.

Comfort Layers

The Helix Dawn Luxe’s main comfort layer is a slightly-plush pillow top. This is a firmer model, and the pillow top is much plusher on the softer models.

Below that, there is a layer of firm Helix Responsive Foam. This is dense, bouncy, and does not have much give. It rests on a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam, which is a latex alternative. This layer is also firm and doesn’t compress too easily.

A close shot of the Helix Dawn Luxe construction

These two layers rest on a transition layer made out of Helix Responsive Foam.

Support Layer

The Helix Dawn Luxe features pocketed coils in its support layer. The coils feature zoning so that the center of the mattress feels firmer than the rest. This is meant to provide additional lumbar support, which can help keep your spine in proper neutral alignment.

On the very bottom, there is a base layer of DuraDense Foam. This supports the layers above and keeps the coils from digging into your frame or foundation.

Mattress Height

The Helix Dawn Luxe is 14” tall.

Helix Dawn Luxe Mattress Performance

I tested the Helix Dawn Luxe to see how cooling and durable it really is. Let’s look at the results!

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

Overall, the Helix Dawn Luxe is a cool-sleeping mattress. I reviewed the model with the cooling cover and it actually feels cool to the touch. Also, the coils allow for a great deal of airflow. Sleeping on the mattress, I did not overheat whatsoever. If you are looking for a great cooling mattress, check out the Helix Dawn Luxe.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer occurs when one sleeping partner moves around on a mattress, and their movements disturb their partner. Couples should find something that cuts down on motion transfer and isolates the motion to each side of the mattress.

I tested the motion isolation on the Helix Dawn Luxe, and it performed quite well. Lying down on one side of the mattress, I asked my coworker to move around on the other side. I was not disturbed on my side of the mattress. This means the Helix Dawn Luxe could be a good mattress for couples.

Edge Support

Couples should also choose a mattress with good edge support. This will allow both partners to get the most room to move around and stretch out.

The Helix Dawn Luxe has solid edge support, and I felt secure sitting and lying down near the edge.

Durability

The Helix Dawn Luxe is a very durable mattress that features high-density foams and other luxury materials. Based on its construction, the Helix Dawn Luxe should last for between 10 and 15 years.

Off-gassing

Off-gassing is a common occurrence with bed-in-a-box mattresses. When you unbox a new mattress, it will usually emit a slight chemical smell. I did experience some off-gassing with the Helix Dawn Luxe. I put the mattress in a ventilated room and gave it 48 hours to expand and off-gas. After that, the smell completely dissipated.

Noise

The Helix Dawn Luxe was very quiet when I moved around on it and changed positions. The coils made no noise, and did not squeak or creak. However, it is a hybrid mattress, so it may make more noise after you use it for many years.

Sex

If you and your partner want a mattress for sex, you want to choose something bouncy and responsive. The Helix Dawn Luxe is very bouncy and should make it easy for sexual partners to move around.

Company Policies

Let’s take a closer look at Helix Sleep’s fine print.

Warranty Info

The Helix Dawn Luxe comes with a 15-year warranty. Removing its cover automatically voids the warranty.

You get a 100-night sleep trial with your Helix Luxe mattress.

Return Policy

Helix offers free shipping and returns with all its mattresses.

Common Helix Dawn Luxe Complaints

One common complaint with the Helix Dawn Luxe is that some people found the mattress too firm to be comfortable. This is one of Helix’s firmest mattresses, so its not ideal for side sleepers or lighter back sleepers. For some, sleeping on the Helix Dawn Luxe could cause back and hip pain if its dense comfort layers do not allow for neutral spinal alignment.

The Helix Dawn Luxe will be too firm for lightweight back sleepers, heavyweight stomach sleepers and almost all side sleepers. Side sleepers and lighter back sleepers should consider a softer mattress and those over 300 lb should consider an extra firm mattress meant for heavy people.

How Does The Helix Dawn Luxe Compare To Other Mattresses?

Let’s do a little comparison shopping and see how the Helix Dawn Luxe stacks up against other mattresses.

Helix Dawn Luxe vs Helix Dawn

The Helix Dawn Luxe and Helix Dawn Standard are the two firmest mattresses Helix offers. Right off the bat, both mattresses are going to work well for stomach sleepers and fans of firm mattresses. They are also both bouncy, responsive mattresses that make it very easy to move around.

The main difference between the Luxe and Standard models can be found in the comfort layer. The Helix Dawn Standard just features firm layers of foam. The Helix Dawn Luxe features these two foam layers plus an additional pillow top. This gives the Luxe a bit of that pillow top feel and provides some more comfort as well. You can also add a cooling cover to the Dawn Luxe, but this is not an option with the Helix Dawn Standard.

A cross section shot of the Helix Dawn

The Helix Dawn Luxe also boasts zoned coils, which you don’t find in the Helix Dawn Standard. The zoning provides even more support toward the center of the mattress. With all these extra features, the Helix Dawn Luxe does cost more than the Helix Dawn Standard.

Helix Dawn Luxe vs Nectar Classic Hybrid

Nectar and Helix are two popular bed-in-a-box companies that carry mattresses with a hybrid foam and innerspring construction. Although the Helix Dawn Luxe and the Nectar Classic Hybrid both feature foam comfort layers and individually-wrapped coils, the Nectar Classic Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress while the Helix Dawn Luxe is firmer than average. This makes the Nectar Classic Hybrid a better fit for back and side sleepers than the Helix Dawn Luxe.

Both mattresses have cooling covers, but the Helix Dawn Luxe comes with the option to upgrade to their GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover at an additional cost. The Nectar Classic Hybrid is made with a gel-infused memory foam designed to dissipate heat and keep you cool. Both mattresses are good picks for hot sleepers.

A cross-section shot of the Nectar Classic Hybrid

The Nectar Classic Hybrid is not considered a luxury mattress and is more affordable than the Helix Dawn Luxe. Although both mattresses are made from durable, quality materials, I would consider the Helix Dawn Luxe to be a better long-term investment.
