I Recommend The Casper Atlas For…

  • Fans of a balanced foam feel. While you’ll sink in a fair amount, the medium-firm feel means you shouldn’t feel stuck.
  • Back sleepers. Since it has a medium-firm feel, it meets the needs of a wide range of sleepers. Back sleepers in particular should find it an ideal fit.
  • Value shoppers. Even the largest size is under $1,500 before discounts, making this a great hybrid for the money.

I Don’t Recommend The Casper Atlas For…

  • Fans of a slow-moving foam feel. If you like the hugged sensation of classic memory foam, you should look elsewhere.
  • Stomach sleepers. It’s a medium-firm mattress, so it lacks the firm feel most stomach sleepers need.
  • People who weigh more than 300 lbs. This bed isn’t supportive enough for heavier people. If you fall in this category, take a look at our list of the best mattresses for heavy people.

How Firm is the Casper Atlas Mattress?

The Casper Atlas has soft foam on top and supportive coils at the bottom. This gives the mattress a perfect medium feel. We score mattresses on a scale of 1-10, and this mattress scored a 6.5/10. This is the exact industry standard for medium-firm.

Casper Atlas Mattress Test Performance: My Overall Rating

To get a true sense of how the Casper Atlas performs, I assessed key features like support, cooling ability, durability and more. It earned a solid 4/5 stars, which is definitely respectable, and close to full marks for motion transfer and responsiveness. Hover over the categories below for a more detailed explanation, and keep scrolling to see how the Atlas measured up.

Casper Atlas Performance in Our Tests

Support

Support – 4

Support is arguably the most important feature in a mattress. Without sufficient support, your back might sink out of alignment and you could wake up with aches and pains.

The Casper Atlas fared reasonably well in this category. The coils offer some good support, and I felt that it held up when I rested on my back. But fair warning — this is a thinner mattress that probably won’t be supportive enough for larger people, especially over the long run.

Edge Support

Edge Support – 3.5

Edge support is an important feature if you share the bed with a partner and need to maximize real estate so you can both sleep comfortably. Beds with poor edge support can sag near the sides, causing couples to sleep closer toward the center of the bed.

When I sat on the side of the Casper Atlas, it sagged pretty significantly — a full 5” by my measurement. There’s a possibility that lighter people may not experience sagging to that degree, which is worth pointing out. Plus, lying along the side of the Atlas felt more secure. That’s likely because body weight is distributed differently when you lie down compared to sitting down.

20241101 133156

Cooling

Cooling – 3.5

If you overheat at night, you understand the value of a mattress that sleeps cool. Thanks to the coil layer, hybrid mattresses promote airflow better than all-foam mattresses. But the Casper Atlas, despite its hybrid construction, didn’t sleep particularly cool.

I used my temperature gun to measure the surface of the bed after I rested on it for five minutes. It increased from 71.5 to 79.1 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s not as bad as some mattresses I’ve tested, but it’s far from the best. It’s just okay. Personally, I didn’t overheat on this bed, but keep in mind that it’s really not built for cooling.

20241101 130357

Motion Transfer

Motion Transfer – 4.5

Motion transfer describes movement across the bed. If you have any kind of bed partner, a mattress with high motion transfer can mean regular disruptions, since you’ll feel any jostling that comes from the other side of the bed.

We have two tests for motion transfer. In one, I place a full glass of water on the bed and then press firmly into the mattress around it. I didn’t see the water ripple in the glass, which tells me the Atlas does a good job at isolating motion.

20241101 132933

I also asked my coworker to help me test the mattress. I rested on one side while they energetically changed positions on the opposite side. Again, I didn’t notice a lot of movement on my side of the bed. It was pretty easy to give the mattress close to perfect marks in the motion transfer category.

Response

Response – 4.5

A mattress with good response has a decent level of bounce, which makes it easier to change positions. If you’re a combination sleeper, responsiveness is important.

This is another category where the Casper Atlas did very well. The foam in the top layer is more responsive than traditional memory foam and, paired with the coils in the support layer, the mattress has a bouncier feel overall.

20241101 133538

Durability

Durability – 4

Durability isn’t easy to predict, so I base my educated guess on how the mattress is constructed and the materials with which it’s made. The Casper Atlas has high-density foam and high-quality coils, so it’s not unreasonable to expect it to last at least seven years. But it’s a thinner mattress, and it likely won’t last as long as some more advanced hybrids.

Casper Atlas Policy Scores

Trial Period

Trial Period – 4.5

Casper offers a 100-night sleep trial on its Atlas mattress. That’s not as long as some competitors, but it still gives you longer than three months to test the mattress from the comfort of your own home. Like other mattress companies, Casper asks that you sleep on the mattress for at least 30 days before returning. This gives your body ample time to adjust to the new bed.

If you don’t love it after the first 30 days, you can return the mattress and get your money back. The company says they do their best to donate returned mattresses.

Warranty

Warranty – 4

The Casper Atlas has a 10-year warranty. Given the life expectancy, it’s reasonable, though not as generous as companies that offer lifetime warranties. Still, in the event of manufacturing defects that cause sagging and sinking, you can contact the company for a one-time replacement or repair, with no fee or deductible. Plus, shipping charges are included.

Two-Hour Nap Test

The two-hour nap test is a chance to see how the mattress really performs. Napping on this mattress, I felt best while I was back sleeping. The coils and foam created a balance of comfort and support that I really enjoyed. But I will say that this is a thinner mattress and, as a bigger guy, I would probably prefer something thicker and more substantial.

Casper Atlas – Other Factors To Consider

There’s more to a mattress than its edge support or cooling prowess. I considered other factors to fully assess the Atlas.

Off-gassing

The Casper Atlas is a bed-in-a-box, so off-gassing is expected. I noticed a slight chemical smell when I opened the box, but it wasn’t overbearing and it went away after a few days.

Noise

The Casper Atlas I tested was brand new, so I didn’t hear any squeaks when I rolled around on it. But because it’s a hybrid, the coils could begin to squeak as time passes.

Sex

For sex, a mattress should be responsive enough that it’s easy to move around comfortably. The Casper Atlas delivers. It’s a great pick for sexual partners because it has great bounce.

Mattress Height

The Casper Atlas is 10” tall, which is slightly thinner than other beds on the market. Most mattresses are 12” or taller.

Price

A queen-size Casper Atlas costs $1199.00 at regular price, which is pretty standard for online mattresses. But you can save some money with Mattress Clarity coupons.

Sleeping Position and Weight

The Casper Atlas felt fantastic when I tested it on my back. That’s no real surprise, since it’s a medium-firm mattress. I noticed subtle contouring from the foam layers on top, and I can report that the mattress held up my body weight nicely. Light and average-weight sleepers should fare very well, but those over 300 lbs will do better with something more supportive.

Rolling to my side, I noticed pressure on my hips and shoulders. Then again, I am a bigger guy, which definitely played a role. Light and average-weight side sleepers should find just enough cushioning and lumbar support.

This wasn’t a good fit for me on my stomach, either. It lacked the firmness and support I needed to keep my hips elevated. Again, light and average-weight stomach sleepers could find it sufficient, especially given its medium-firm feel.

Heavyweight – 6’7”, 270 lbs

“I’m a larger person, and this mattress felt best while I was back sleeping. That being said, I don’t think this mattress is made for me. I probably need a thicker, more supportive mattress.” – Marten

Average-weight – 5’3”, 150 lbs

“I felt great while resting on my back and side, but I didn’t get quite enough support while stomach sleeping. I’d need a firmer mattress if I were a regular stomach sleeper.” – Elisa

Lightweight Sleepers

Those who weigh less than 130 lbs won’t compress the top layer of the Casper Atlas too much, so they should feel ample support while back, side, and stomach sleeping.

Casper Atlas Construction

Now that we’ve covered how the mattress performs across multiple categories, let’s take a look at its materials and design.

Cover

The Casper Atlas is surrounded by a Cozy Knit cover, which is stretchy and soft to the touch but on the thinner side. That’s a good thing — it lets air flow through the top of the mattress.

20241101 133534

Comfort Layers

A layer of Casper Signature Foam comes next. It’s the main comfort layer in the mattress. It’s soft and plush but it’s also quite responsive, giving the mattress a touch of bounce.

A layer of high-quality transition foam comes next. It’s a soft layer of foam that adds more comfort and keeps you from sinking into the coils below.

Support Layers

The majority of the support in the Casper Atlas comes from hundreds of individually-wrapped coils. They give the mattress bounce and targeted support. Plus, they help promote airflow through the bottom of the mattress.

At the base of the Atlas is a layer of ProSupport Foam, which resists sagging and provides structure to the layers above.

How The Casper Atlas Compares

One of the best ways to weigh the pros and cons of a mattress is with a side-by-side comparison. Here’s how the Casper Atlas fares against competitors.

Casper Atlas vs. Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight is another popular hybrid, and it’s slightly firmer than average. It’s a taller mattress at 13.5,” and it has more of a slow-moving feel on top. Price-wise, after discounts, both the Casper Atlas and Helix Midnight are comparably priced.

The big difference is how it feels. If you prefer something more responsive, go with the Atlas. If you like slow-moving memory foam, the Midnight is the better choice.

Take a look at my Helix Midnight mattress review to learn more.

Casper Atlas vs. Nectar Classic Hybrid

With its medium-firm feel, the Nectar Classic Hybrid is similar to the Casper Atlas. But the Nectar model has upgraded cooling features and more of a classic memory foam feel.

The Nectar Classic Hybrid gets our vote if you’re a hot sleeper, budget shopper, or big fan of traditional memory foam mattresses.

Casper Atlas vs. Casper Original Hybrid

The Casper Original Hybrid is a step up in terms of cooling power and lumbar support. That’s largely thanks to its zoned support, which is better for those with back pain. But you’ll pay more for the upgraded features.

If you sleep warm or consistently sleep on your back, the Original Hybrid is the better choice. The Casper Atlas is the better buy if you don’t need as much lumbar support or you’re shopping on a tighter budget.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Casper Atlas Mattress

Is Casper Atlas a good mattress?

Whether or not the Casper Atlas is a good mattress really comes down to individual preferences. It’s a medium-firm mattress with a balanced foam feel, so it’s a good choice for back sleepers in particular. But it’s only available in Canada. If you don’t live in Canada and you prefer the slow-moving feel of memory foam, I’d keep looking.

Can you flip a Casper Atlas mattress?

No, you can’t flip a Casper Atlas mattress. This bed has coils at the bottom and foam on top. If you flipped it, the bed wouldn’t feel comfortable.

How long will a Casper Atlas mattress last?

Based on its hybrid construction and materials, we expect the Casper Atlas to last between seven and 10 years.
