Birch Luxe Natural Mattress Review Overview
The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is made by Helix, a mattress brand that has made their way into the mattress industry in just a few short years. The Luxe Natural Mattress is their new premium model, acting as a level up from their original mattress, the Birch Natural mattress.
The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is an organic mattress made up of materials that have been responsibly and sustainably sourced. Materials such as natural wool, Fair Trade cotton and Pulse latex sit on top of steel coils to make you feel like you’re sleeping in luxury.
Pros of the Birch Natural Luxe Mattress
- This is a great mattress if you’re someone who is looking for a bed made with all-natural materials. Everything is certified 100% organic.
- The Birch Natural Luxe mattress is a bit firmer than other mattresses, so it’ll work well for back and stomach sleepers.
- If you’re someone who likes a bouncy mattress, this is for you. The Birch Natural Luxe is an innerspring mattress, so it’s bouncy and easy to move around on.
Who Might Not Like The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress?
- This mattress is made with all-natural, 100% organic materials, which in turn drives up the price. If you’re shopping with a strict budget in mind, you should consider something else.
- Due to the firm nature of this mattress, and the latex foam not being very contouring, this mattress isn’t ideal for side sleepers.
- If you’re a fan of that slow-moving memory foam feel, you won’t get that here.

Birch Luxe Natural Mattress Firmness and Feel
Time for the all-important part of a new mattress review: the firmness and feel. Is the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress going to fit your firmness needs? Let’s find out.
How Firm is the Birch Luxe Natural?
At Mattress Clarity, we rank beds on a scale from 1 to 10. In my experience, the Birch Luxe Natural comes in at 7.5/10. The industry standard for a medium-firm mattress is 6.5/10, which means the Birch Luxe Natural’s is a bit firmer than most.
Keep in mind that a mattress’s firmness level is subjective and factors such as weight and height will make everyone’s experience different.
Sleeping On The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress
If you’re a heavier back sleeper, then the Birch Luxe Natural should be a great pick for you. Instead of sinking into the mattress, you’re going to sleep on top of it. You should feel great support as you sleep.
For side sleepers, I’d recommend something better suited for your needs. In my tests, I found that pressure along my shoulders and hips could cause some problems if I were to sleep on this every night.
Because this is a firmer mattress, I felt really supported on my stomach. So, stomach sleepers should feel plenty of support in their hips. The Birch Luxe Natural features a zoned lumbar support layer, so it feels firmer in some areas and softer in others. This promotes proper spinal alignment, which could help ease or prevent lower back pain.
What Does the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress Feel Like?
When it comes to feel, the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress has individually wrapped, pocketed coils to give a bouncy innerspring feel. Though it does have a thin top layer of latex foam, the Birch Luxe Natural is more responsive than a typical memory foam mattress. Because of this, you should be able to change positions or get in and out of bed rather easily.
Sleeper Weight | Back Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight (Under 130 lb) | Excellent | Fair | Excellent |
Average (130 – 230 lb) | Excellent | Bad | Good |
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb) | Excellent | Bad | Good |
Is the Birch Natural Luxe Mattress Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 lb – 230 lb)?
- The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress should support average-weight back and stomach sleepers. The thin latex foam combined with the steel coils should give back and stomach sleepers good support. And the zoned lumbar support layer is designed to give you the correct spinal alignment.
- Side sleepers, on the other hand, have pressure points in their shoulders and hips, and in our experience, pressure could build up in these areas. Ultimately, side sleepers might experience some pain over time. We’d recommend looking elsewhere for the best mattresses for side sleepers.
Is the Birch Natural Luxe Mattress Good for Heavyweight Sleepers (over 230 lb)?
- The Birch Luxe Natural should be a fantastic pick for heavyweight sleepers who prefer both back and stomach sleepers because they’ll compress the top layer and the steel coils a bit more than average and lightweight sleepers.
- The zoned lumbar support layer is designed specifically for back support and should help enhance the perimeter.
- Like average-weight sleepers, we wouldn’t recommend this mattress for side sleepers. Since heavyweight sleepers compress the mattress more, the pressure you feel in your hips and shoulders could cause pain over time.
Is the Birch Natural Luxe Mattress Good for Lightweight Sleepers (under 130 lb)?
- Overall, lightweight sleepers who enjoy bouncy, responsive mattresses should find the Birch Luxe Mattress a good choice.
- Since you’ll sleep on top of the mattress, rather than sinking into it, you should feel supported in most of your sleeping positions, but especially your back and stomach.
- Side sleepers may not compress the layers as much, so we still would recommend a different mattress if you prefer to rest on your side.
Birch Luxe Natural Mattress Construction
It’s always a good idea to take a look at what’s inside the mattress to fully inform your purchasing decision. Let’s dive into the construction of the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress.
Cover
The Birch Luxe Natural features a matelassé organic cotton, quilted Euro top cover. This is an organic cotton cover that is plush and designed for breathability. In addition, this cover is made with organic wool and rayon fibers which should help make this cover fire retardant as well.
Comfort Layers
There are four comfort layers to the Birch Luxe Natural that are all made out of organic materials. Right underneath the cover is a comfort layer made up of organic, high-quality cashmere and wool. This layer truly exemplifies luxury.
The second comfort layer is made out of organic wool. This section is designed to help regulate body temperature, and it should even help keep the mattress dry thanks to its moisture-wicking properties. Beneath this, you’ll find a layer made out of all-organic wool, which provides extra loft and cushioning.
The final layer contains natural latex foam, which aids in pressure relief. Pulse latex is used in this layer to help relieve pain along pressure points and provide support.
Support Layer
The final two layers of the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress are designed for support. The main support layer is full of almost 1,000 individually wrapped steel coils that help cradle your body. These springs should also provide good airflow throughout the mattress.
The base layer for the Birch Luxe Natural is also made up of organic wool and rayon fibers, giving an extra layer of fire retardant safety.
Mattress Height
The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress comes in at 11.5” tall.

Birch Luxe Natural Mattress Performance
So, what does this all mean? Let’s see how the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress performed in our tests.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
The Birch Luxe Mattress is a latex hybrid mattress that is made up of latex foam and innerspring coils. This means that hot sleepers should feel cooling effects as they sleep.
The organic wool comfort layers are there to help with body temperature regulation, and the steel coils provide good airflow throughout the mattress. Overall, this should be a great mattress for hot sleepers.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a key component when looking for the best mattresses for couples. And, in general, innerspring mattresses don’t isolate motion as well as foam mattresses.
The Birch Luxe Natural isn’t too much of an exception to the rule. Despite a latex foam layer underneath the comfort layers, the springs give the mattress a bouncy, responsive feel.
Couples won’t necessarily feel motion isolation with this mattress, however, with 1,000 individually wrapped coils, it does a better job than most innerspring mattresses.
Edge Support
The Birch Luxe Mattress really excels when it comes to edge support. With a strong network of steel coils and a sturdy base layer, this mattress should provide exceptional support.
In my experience, I felt quite secure sitting and sleeping at the edge, making this a good mattress that won’t sag. Couples should also be able to sleep near the edge without fear of falling out of bed.
Durability
This eco-friendly mattress is designed with high-quality, organic materials. These materials are GREENGUARD Gold certified, and in our opinion, should last at least 10 years.
Off-Gassing
Most bed-in-a-box mattresses need time to expand and off-gas. When we unboxed the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress, we did notice a slight latex (though not chemical) smell. This is due to the mattress’s latex layer, though any and all smells should fade away after 48 hours.
Noise
As I tested the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress, I found that it was fairly silent. Over time, however, it could start to squeak because of the coils within.
Sex
Couples in the market for the best mattress for sex might find what they’re looking for in the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress. Since this mattress features a coil layer, it feels bouncy and responsive. It’s especially easy to move around on top of this bed.
Company Policies
So, what does the Birch by Helix have to offer you when you buy the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress? Here are the company policies.
Warranty Info
Helix offers a substantial 25-year warranty for the Birch Luxe Natural. Looking at some of the finer print, however, Birch does note that you’ll have full warranty coverage for the first 10 years. From years 11 to 25, you’ll have limited, prorated coverage. This means that during the first 10 years of your purchase, Birch will offer to replace a mattress with workmanship defects. From year 11 on, Birch will replace a mattress at a prorated rate.
The warranty only extends to the original purchaser of the mattress, and will not cover things like natural wear and tear, intentional destruction of the mattress, general dissatisfaction with the overall feel of the mattress past the trial period amongst other stipulations.
Sleep Trial
Even if, on paper, this seems like the mattress for you, it’s nice to know when a company offers a trial period. And the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial.
Return Policy
If the Birch Luxe Natural isn’t the fit for you, you can return the mattress for a full refund within the 100-night sleep trial. However, they do require you to have it for at least 30 days before requesting a return.
Mattress Removal
Birch, in partnership with LoadUp, gives customers the option to add a mattress removal service to their purchase. This way, customers won’t have to worry about hauling their old bed away!
Common Mattress Complaints
Based on my research, across all Birch Living mattresses, most dissatisfied customers found that the mattress was too firm, or that they needed a mattress topper. If you’re in the market for the best soft mattress, we recommend looking elsewhere.
One other common complaint was the smell. Keep in mind, most smells do fade away after 24-48 hours, but if you’re sensitive to chemical or latex smells, that’s something to consider.
How Does The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress Compare To Other Mattresses?
When looking for a new mattress, it’s important to compare mattresses to see which one will be the best mattress for you. Let’s see how the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress compares with other hybrid mattresses.

When looking for a hybrid mattress, a common name you’ll likely see is the Saatva. And in many ways, the Saatva and the Birch Luxe Natural are similar. They are both coil mattresses with a classic pillow top feel. But what makes them different from one another?
For starters, the Birch Luxe Natural is a half point firmer than the Saatva, coming in at 7.5/10 as opposed to Saatva’s 7/10. Because of this, the Birch Luxe Natural should work better for stomach sleepers. However, one thing to note with Saatva is that they do offer a variety of firmness options for their mattresses.
In terms of construction, Saatva does come with an organic cotton cover, but overall, Birch Luxe Natural’s materials are more eco-friendly than the Saatva’s.
However, since the Birch Luxe Natural is a mattress designed with luxury in mind, it will be on the pricier side.
Our final difference between the two is that Saatva is not a bed-in-a-box brand, whereas the Birch Luxe Natural will arrive in a box. If you’re looking for the convenience of a bed-in-a-box, then the Birch Luxe Natural is the option for you.

Fans of more eco-friendly materials | Mattress shoppers looking for a lower price point |
Those who prefer a firmer mattress | Anyone looking for a latex free mattress |

When comparing the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress to an Avocado mattress, again we’re looking at two very similar mattresses. Both are latex mattresses with coils, and they are designed with eco-friendly materials. But let’s see what’s different.
Though their construction is the same, the Birch Luxe Mattress feels firmer, coming in with a Mattress Clarity firmness score of 7.5/10. The Avocado mattress comes in at a 6.5/10, giving it the standard medium-firm feel as opposed to the Birch Luxe Natural’s firmer feel. Avocado also offers the option to add a pillow top to most of their mattresses.
Both the Avocado and the Birch Luxe Natural mattresses are good options for back sleepers. But the softer Avocado mattress will be a better option for side sleepers looking for a comfortable mattress to provide good pressure relief. The Birch Luxe Natural’s firmer construction will make this a comfortable mattress for stomach sleepers to help their hips in the correct position.
But if you’re on the hunt for a mattress with a budget in mind, the Birch Luxe Natural will again be on the pricier side, making the Avocado a more affordable option.
