Best Purple Mattress Alternatives (2025)

The original Purple mattress is the flagship bed of the brand and features a 2-inch GelFlex® Grid, contouring foam, and a thick supportive base for a squishy medium-firm feel. This construction also lends the bed plenty of bounce, some cooling, and oodles of pressure relief. Our lead tester Marten Carlson tested out this bed and proclaimed, “There’s no other mattress that feels quite like this one.” 

But don’t let all this deter you from finding an alternative. Let me introduce you to the Nectar memory foam mattress, an all-foam bed that may provide that cushy feel and the support you need. It doesn’t have any fancy polymer grid, but it does have two layers of comfort foams, one to promote pressure relief, and the other to give the bed some response. This yields a similar feel to the Purple mattress, though the Nectar is a smidge firmer at 7/10 on our firmness scale. We recommend both beds for all types of sleepers, especially side sleepers and back sleepers looking for a pressure-relieving surface.

The Nectar mattress also scored similarly to the Purple in a number of our tests. They both excelled in the support category, with the Nectar earning a 4/5 and the Purple a 4.5/5. They received the same scores for edge support, though the Purple scored a smidge higher again due to the foam reinforcement around its perimeter. Both are going to be fairly durable beds due to their quality construction, with the Nectar earning a 4/5 and the Purple a 4.5/5 for durability.

So, how do they differ? Let’s start with what the Purple does better. Foam is notorious for holding onto heat, and while the Nectar has a cooling cover, the Purple’s perforated grid allows for more airflow through the mattress. The Nectar’s slow-moving foams also don’t give the bed the same bounce, so the Purple has a more responsive surface (we only gave the Nectar a 3.5/5 in this category). If these aren’t dealbreakers for you, you might be pleased to know that the Nectar actually excels in motion isolation. The Purple only earned a 3/5, while the Nectar earned 4.5/5—its cushioning top absorbs movements before they travel to the other side of the bed, promoting undisturbed sleep between couples.

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is the second in Purple’s mid-level Restore line, a step above its original Purple mattress. Aside from an extra inch of GelFlex® Grid (totaling 3 inches), this bed features premium comfort foam and a zoned innerspring coil layer. Tester Marten found the bed to be a 6/10 on the firmness scale, which is a bit softer than the average medium-firm mattress. He also noted that it “cradled [his] body” and that he “did not feel too much pressure anywhere.”

As an alternative, I recommend the Helix Midnight. This hybrid mattress is designed for side sleepers, so it has plenty of contouring foams backed up by a supportive coil unit. Thus, it has a similar cradling feel to the RestorePlus, but at a fraction of the cost. A queen Helix Midnight only costs $1,332, and that’s before sales or coupons; compare that to the RestorePlus Hybrid’s nearly $3,000 pricepoint. 

In terms of performance, these beds scored fairly similarly. We saw a lot of 4s and 4.5s across the boards for both beds in our testing. Both earned a 4.5 in cooling, which should be a boon for hot sleepers. The Helix scored 4s in both support and edge support, whereas the RestorePlus earned 4.5s in each of these, getting a small leg up over the Midnight. This just means that both beds have sturdy and strong coils ready to bring the lift. Both also were solid choices for back sleepers, but I think the Helix will fare a bit better for side sleepers. Neither seemed to be a great choice for stomach sleepers, though, unless you’re on the lighter side.

The main area where the RestorePlus differs from the Helix is its ability to absorb motion. We only gave it a 3.5/5 in this category, as the coils cancel out the thin comfort layers. Compare this with the Helix Midnight, which earned a 4/5 in this category. Marten didn’t note any disturbances in our motion transfer test. “I was able to rest comfortably while my fellow tester vigorously moved around, probably as their movements were absorbed by the memory foam on top,” he said. “Therefore, I’d recommend this bed for restless couples.”

The Purple RestorePremier is the most upgraded option of Purple’s second-tier Restore line. This 13-inch luxury hybrid features not only 3 inches of Purple’s GelFlex® Grid, but also foam-topped pocketed coils to boost the pressure relief and support already provided by the polymer grid. Purple touts the mattress as having a soft feel that it claims should be suitable for all sleeper types, as the support system should provide any necessary lift.

Similarly, the WinkBed is a luxurious hybrid mattress with a lifted feel. Unlike the RestorePremier, however, it comes in multiple firmness options, including Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. There’s even an aptly named WinkBed Plus model designed for heavier sleepers. We tested the Luxury Firm and found it to be a smidge firmer (7/10 on our scale) than the standard medium-firm. Many customers reported that the RestorePremier was firmer than they expected, so these beds might actually be closer in firmness than expected.

Both beds should perform comparably well as they’re both luxury mattresses with hybrid constructions. We recommend the WinkBed as a mattress for those who like a bouncy, “on top” feel and have concerns about back pain and overheating. We gave it a 5/5 in support and 4.5/5 in cooling, for reference. Many customers similarly found the RestorePremier to be adaptive and cool, mostly thanks to the responsive, pressure-relieving gel grid and individually wrapped coils that keep air flowing through the mattress.

The RestorePremier’s coils and thick comfort layers should also contribute to the mattress’s motion isolation capability. Still, the coils beneath may prevent it from being completely foolproof, so I wouldn’t recommend it for couples if one of you is an extremely light sleeper. It’s a surprisingly similar story on the WinkBed. Marten says, “It wasn’t the worst motion isolation [he]’d ever experienced,” but mentions finding it difficult to ignore his partner’s movements during testing (leading us to give it a score of 3.5/5 in motion isolation).

For better motion isolation, you might like WinkBed’s foam option, the GravityLux.

The Purple Rejuvenate is the first in Purple’s most luxe mattress line, which upgrades its hybrid models by adding more specialized comfort layers, including a luxury-hotel-quality Euro top. The denser GelFlex® Grid Plus is encased in dual layers of comfort foams to enhance its overall performance. Per Purple, this hybrid should provide a hotel bed feel, like a classic luxury innerspring. It retails for over $5,000 for a queen, though, which may have some people seeking alternatives.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is one such option. As the name “Elite” implies, this bed is in the upper echelons of mattress luxury as a premium cooling mattress that’s built for support. It comes in multiple firmness levels, but we tested out the Medium bed. Our heavyweight tester Marten says that he had “a pretty nice experience on this mattress,” and noted that it was “a good fit for back and side sleeping.” The use of phase change material in the cover makes the bed a cooling star, earning it an impressive 4.5/5 in this category.

Both of these beds should fall in the medium-firm category (6.5/10 on our scale), providing a versatile feel that should work for a lot of sleepers. Both should also offer plenty of pressure relief for folks struggling with discomfort, like hip pain or shoulder pain. (We recommend the Bear Elite for seniors for this very reason.) The addition of coils should also make both mattresses fairly bouncy, a plus for folks who are often switching between positions.

Motion isolation may be where these beds differ. The Bear Elite has a springy surface due to its coils and more responsive foams, which is not the best at stifling movement from the other side of the bed. It only earned a 3.5/5 in our motion transfer tests. The Rejuvenate seems to have more of a sinking, cloud-like feel from its dual foams that should keep disturbance from traveling across the bed’s surface. Many couples who have reviewed the bed report that both they and their partner sleep soundly on it.

The Purple RejuvenatePlus is the second-tier offering of the brand’s luxurious Rejuvenate line, a middle ground between the Rejuvenate and the RejuvenatePremier hybrids. This bed features layers of foam and an innerspring unit alongside a denser version of its typical GelFlex® Grid, providing something a bit different to the brand’s unique “squishy” feel. As tester Marten put it, “While I felt some of that [squishiness] in the RejuvenatePlus, I mostly experienced the softness of the pillow top.” He rated it at a 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, a true medium-firm. 

It’s fitting that I recommend a luxury mattress to “compete” against the RejuvenatePlus. But I’m not recommending just any premium mattress here—this is the mattress that I sleep on every night: the Saatva Classic. The luxury innerspring mattress features two coil units, layers of foam, and a plush Euro top. It’s available in multiple firmness options and two heights, so it also has some customizability (perhaps a leg up over the one-size-fits-most RejuvenatePlus). 

After testing out the RejuvenatePlus, Marten decided it would work best for back and side sleepers looking for a balanced feel, which the hybrid bed provides. Its deep response also makes it easy to switch between these two positions. On the Saatva, it’s a similar story. I’m a combination sleeper myself, and I’d say the bed’s bouncy surface is its shining feature. However, unlike the RejuvenatePlus, the Saatva is firm and supportive enough to also work for stomach sleepers. I’ve slept on my back, side, and stomach on my Saatva without any discomfort or pain, so I’d recommend it as a true jack-of-all-trades bed.

Both of these beds performed similarly well in our performance tests. They both earned 4.5/5 for support, and I believe the Saatva’s double-innerspring construction makes it on par with the RejuvenatePlus’s grid and coils support system. They also scored high in edge support, with the Purple earning 5/5 and Saatva 4.5/5—though I’d personally rate the Saatva a 5/5 as I’m able to sleep with one leg off the bed, proving how well it maintains its structure along the sides.

The main difference between the performance of these two beds comes down to motion isolation. The Saatva has some foam layers up top, but they do little to stifle motion across the surface; I can always feel my partner tossing and turning. Marten found that the RejuvenatePlus did absorb movement (earning it a 4/5 score for motion isolation), and recommended it for couples.

For a bed with better motion isolation, you might like the Nolah Evolution.

The RejuvenatePremier is the most luxurious mattress that Purple offers, coming in at more than $6,000 for a queen size. The reasoning behind its lofty price? Dual layers of specialized GelFlex® Grids with comfort layers, Talalay latex, and 5-zoned coils all contribute to the bed’s gargantuan 18.5” profile. Purple touts this bed as a medium-feel hybrid with the most support and comfort out of all its models—so expect a luxury feel beyond the already high-end Rejuvenate predecessors.

Maybe you’re wanting a luxury mattress, but a price tag of multiple thousands of dollars is a little difficult to justify. Might I introduce you to the Nolah Evolution, a bed that has plenty of luxury features at a touch more reasonable price. The Evolution has a lot of luxury features comparable to those in the RejuvenatePremier: a plush Euro top, a breathable cover, aerated foam layers, and coils zoned into three distinct areas for better support. This 15-inch mattress retails for about $2,500, but sales can often bring the price down near the $1,600 mark.

Both beds should provide a great mix of pressure relief and lift. Customers report finding comfort on the RejuvenatePremier in all sleeping positions. However, it only comes in one firmness option, while the Nolah Evolution has three to choose from (Soft, Medium, Firm). Marten tested out the Medium model and noted that he “really liked this mattress on the back and side.” If you’re looking for support for stomach sleepers, you might consider choosing the Firm model. Regardless, we gave the bed a 4/5 in the support category.

As for where the Nolah might outperform Purple, some customers noted that the RejuvenatePremier sleeps a bit hot. This wasn’t our experience on the Nolah Evolution, which earned a perfect 5/5 cooling score. My fellow senior staff writer and tester Sosha sleeps on a Nolah Evolution at home. “The Evolution’s cooling factors are a godsend,” Sosha says. “Before getting it, we kept our bedroom so cold that I’m certain we could have stored dead bodies in it.” This is thanks to the bed’s many temperature-regulating features, including an innovative air gusset, which allows excess heat to escape from the cooling pillow top.

If you want a cushy hybrid at a lower price point, I’d recommend the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.

The Purple Restore Hybrid is the first iteration of the Purple mattress that also features innerspring coils. For the comfort layers, it also contains 2 inches of the Purple grid and a layer of contouring foam, all wrapped in a cooling fiber cover. The bed has a medium feel, which should appeal to a variety of sleeper types and preferences. However, some might balk at the more than $2,000 price for a queen-size of this bed.

Based on our testing, we suggest the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid as an alternative: This hybrid is a high-quality, high-value option, coming in at just $1,332 (and that’s before sales or coupons). Tester Marten praised the bed, saying, “For a baseline model, the Signature is a great, affordable pick for sleepers who don’t need bells and whistles.” It comes in multiple firmness options, including Medium to match the Restore Hybrid’s feel. I tested out this model myself and found it to be delightfully medium-firm and supportive. 

Both of these beds are great options for back sleepers, who fare best on balanced, medium-feel surfaces that promote proper spinal alignment. However, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature also has both firmer and softer options to appeal to stomach and side sleepers respectively. We rated the mattress’s support at 4/5, so it should keep most sleepers comfortably lifted. Folks looking for a more customizable feel won’t get that with the Purple Restore, but the gel grid may be able to provide the pressure relief side sleepers need.

Where the beds both falter is in motion isolation. During our tests on the Signature Hybrid, I felt my fellow reviewer’s movements, especially when he got in and out of bed, which earned it a lackluster score of 3/5. The Restore has similarly thin comfort layers, which may not prove a good buffer between the bouncy coils. While I wouldn’t recommend either of these beds to restless couples or light sleepers, I would say combination sleepers or sexually active folks should take another look. Both should have a responsive surface that makes it easier to move around. This was the Signature Hybrid’s best-ranking performance category—it earned a 4.5/5 for response.

Want better motion isolation? Check out the Helix Midnight.

The PurpleFlex mattress is Purple’s most affordable and firmest offering. It’s made up of just two distinct layers, 2 inches of its GelFlex® Grid and a dense base foam. This simple construction packs a lot of support, while still retaining some of the squishiness of the flex grid. Marten noted that “the PurpleFlex has a similar feel to the original Purple.” However, we rated it at a 7.5/10 on our firmness scale, a bit above the Original’s medium-firm feel.

If you’re looking for a firm mattress and are willing to part with the Purple name, you may find yourself satisfied with the aptly named Plank Firm. This all-foam mattress by Brooklyn Bedding is a two-in-one deal. It’s got a flippable construction that includes a traditionally firm side (8/10 on our scale) and an extra-firm side (9/10). It’s best suited for stomach and back sleepers who prioritize lift above all. You also may be happy to know that a queen-size Plank Firm is at a pretty comparable price to the PurpleFlex, with both beds coming in under the $1,000 mark (though this is after coupons for both).

These beds actually scored extremely similarly in our testing. They earned the same sub-par scores in motion isolation (3/5) and cooling (3.5/5). The former is likely due to their responsive surfaces allowing movement to carry. Foams are also known for holding onto heat, and the thin flexible grid may not have been enough to give the PurpleFlex a cooling edge over the Plank. If anything, the Plank Firm outperformed the PurpleFlex in a few categories. The Plank earned perfect 5/5 scores in support and edge support, a sign of the bed’s sturdiness and durability, whereas the PurpleFlex only earned 4/5 in each. 

The only possible downside to the Plank Firm is that it truly is firmer than the PurpleFlex. Marten says, “The Plank is, hands down, the firmest mattress I have ever tried.” Some side sleepers who prefer a firm bed may be able to find pressure relief from the GelFlex® Grid, but this is less likely on the Plank Firm’s unyielding surface.
