How We Chose Our Top Picks

Our team of sleep specialists have reviewed more than 150 mattresses, using proprietary analysis and hands-on testing to establish easy-to-understand scores. In addition to an overall score, we measure subscores for support, edge support, cooling, motion transfer, durability, trial period, and warranty.

Dreamfoam Elements Latex Construction
Hands-on testing in our sleep lab

A mattress that traps heat can create an environment where allergens like mold, mildew, and dust mites thrive. For this reason, we looked for breathable mattresses, and only selected beds that scored high in the category of cooling. Of the 10 represented here, nine have a score of at least a 4 out of 5 on cooling, with the lowest score being a 3.7.

Couples
This bed absorbs motion well for a hybrid mattress, so couples shouldn’t notice their partner’s movements.
Pros of the Helix Midnight Mattress
The Helix Midnight mattress is a fantastic choice for back and side sleepers. It’s a perfect medium-firm mattress that offers a lot of comfort from the foam at the top with supportive coils at the bottom.
This mattress shouldn’t trap too much heat thanks to the coils, which allow for airflow. You also have the option to add a specialized cooling cover.
Hybrid mattresses can be bouncy and disturb others who are in bed, but the Helix Midnight absorbs motion very well for this type of mattress.
Cons of the Helix Midnight Mattress
This mattress is too soft to support stomach sleepers. The hips will dip into this bed over time, which can cause strain on the lower back.
While this bed absorbs motion well, it’s still a hybrid. If you don’t want that bouncy, coil feeling to your mattress, you should look for an all-foam bed.

The Helix Midnight is Helix’s most popular model because of its medium-firmness and works well for back and side sleepers. The top layers of foam provide good pressure relief, but the coils offer a good amount of support. It won’t trap heat thanks to those coils, and you can even opt for a cooling cover. Be sure to watch our video review to learn more about the Helix Midnight.

Truth be told, most of Helix’s hybrid mattresses should be a good fit for anyone dealing with allergies. The foams are highly breathable and the springs at the bottom of the beds promote plenty of airflow, helping to keep away allergens and allow sleepers to breathe without obstruction. But we like to recommend the Helix Midnight because of its universality. It has a balanced medium firmness that’s a great match for back sleepers and side sleepers.

What Makes the Helix Midnight Stand Out?

  • The mattress is topped with a Breathe Knit cover that further contributes to breathability.
  • The comfort layer is filled with Helix’s proprietary Memory Plus Foam, which has a slow-moving feel and gives you some immediate pressure relief.
  • The coils are individually wrapped and placed above an additional support layer.

It offers plenty of pressure relief for side sleepers who weigh less than 230 lb.
Cons of the Nectar Mattress

The Nectar is an affordable all-foam mattress that offers lots of pressure relief and body contouring. It works well for most side sleepers, because it helps cushion shoulders and hips. It is also a good option for couples, because it isolates motion well. However, the Nectar mattress isn’t supportive enough for most stomach sleepers and heavyweight people. If you tend to sleep hot at night, you may want to look for a mattress with more cooling features. Learn more in our Nectar mattress video review.

The Nectar Original is a luxury mattress with an impressive price tag ($599 for a queen) for its quality. The all-foam mattress only uses CertiPUR-US certified foams, helping to ensure consumer confidence in Nectar’s commitment to using minimal toxins both in the materials it sources and in the production process of its mattresses. Furthermore, our testers found Nectar’s cooling cover top to be highly moisture-wicking, and it has an antimicrobial treatment to enhance its hypoallergenic benefits.

In addition to being hypoallergenic, the Nectar offered firm support for our testers, especially for an all-foam bed, resulting in a 4/5 for its orthopedic support. Moreover, despite its price tag, the Nectar has a very durable (4/5) build, which resulted in our testers appreciating its excellent edge support, giving the mattress a 4.5/5 for the category. In addition to edge support, couples who interrupt each other’s sleep at night can also appreciate the quality motion isolation (4.5/5) our testers found with the Nectar when resting on it.

What Makes the Nectar Classic Stand Out?

  • The Nectar uses only CertiPUR-US certified foams.
  • The Nectar is firmer (7/10) than most all-foam mattresses, making it more accessible to back and stomach sleepers who love the memory foam feel.
  • The bed’s cover top has an antimicrobial treatment, making it more hypoallergenic.

The Nolah Natural is an eco-friendly mattress that contains organic cotton, organic wool, and eco-friendly latex foam. It feels softer than average, which makes it a nice choice for many side sleepers. It’s not supportive enough for most stomach sleepers, though. It also doesn’t isolate motion well, so it may not be a good option for couples. Watch our Nolah Natural mattress review video to learn more.

A layer of latex foam in the Nolah Natural is especially plush, thus making it an excellent match for side sleepers with allergies. They should feel a good deal of pressure relief, while also enjoying the bed’s hypoallergenic materials, including an organic cotton cover, GOTS Organic wool, and of course, the natural Talalay latex.

What Makes the Nolah Natural Stand Out?

  • Even though they’ll get plenty of contouring, side sleepers should also get plenty of support from a layer of patented HDMax TriZone support coils.
  • The coils help promote a neutral spinal alignment, in addition to making the bed comfortable for back sleepers with allergies.
  • Talalay latex is naturally breathable and the coils allow for plenty of airflow, so the Nolah Natural should be an incredibly cooling mattress.

The EcoSleep Hybrid by Brooklyn Bedding is an eco-friendly mattress with a firm feel, ideal for stomach and back sleepers but too firm perhaps for some side sleepers. Learn more in our video review.

The Brooklyn Bedding Ecosleep’s construction of natural latex and airflow-promoting Ascension coils make it a shoe-in for a quality hypoallergenic mattress. But the bed’s most unique feature is its flippability. You can choose between a medium-firm side (which we found to be closer to firm) and an extra-firm side. We recommend that back sleepers opt for the medium-firm side and stomach sleepers go with the extra-firm side. Combination sleepers should test out which side is most comfortable, and side sleepers will likely need a softer, more pressure-relieving mattress.

What Makes the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Stand Out?

  • The top layer is quilted with Joma wool and organic cotton — naturally hygienic materials that are resistant to mold, mildew, and dust mites.
  • Because of its flippable design, the coils are in the center of the EcoSleep, which helps the mattress sleep extra-cool.
  • You’ll find the organic cotton on both sides of the mattress.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is Bear’s most high-end mattress. It offers luxury features, like zoned support and extra height, while still offering the temperature regulation Bear mattresses are known for. Based on our testing results, we’d recommend this mattress to average-weight side and back sleepers, as well as hot sleepers. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, check out the Bear Star Hybrid. Learn more in our video review.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a higher-end mattress endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. It was originally designed to help athletes experience better sleep and expedite recovery from training and injuries. It uses naturally antimicrobial copper-infused memory foam to help dissipate body heat and wick moisture, preventing bacteria buildup and helping you sleep cooler. Furthermore, the hybrid design blends a breathable cover top with an innerspring layer that helps stimulate airflow and prevent sleepers from feeling clammy while increasing circulation throughout the bed’s core.

The Elite Hybrid scored well across the board when we tested it out. Testers gave the mattress a 4.5/5 for its edge support, cooling, and orthopedic support. Furthermore, this hybrid bed has multiple firmness options, allowing sleepers to choose the right model to best match their sleeping needs. Notably, this near-perfect cooling score shines a light on how sleepers can rest more reliably, not feeling moisture buildup that could lead to bacteria buildup.

After testing the bed’s temperature regulation, one sleep specialist wrote: “Like most of the Bear mattresses, the Bear Elite Hybrid features some nice cooling materials. For example, it boasts a Phase Change Material, which is designed to regulate body temperature while you sleep. When lying down, the mattress felt cool-to-the-touch, and I did not feel like I was overheating.” Moreover, as this mattress was initially designed to help athletes experiencing chronic back and joint pain, most sleepers can appreciate the bed’s design meant to alleviate inflammation and potentially heal long-term back pain.

What Makes the Bear Elite Hybrid Stand Out?

  • The American Chiropractic Association endorses the Bear Elite Hybrid.
  • The Bear Elite Hybrid uses copper-infused foam to help dissipate body heat and prevent moisture buildup.
  • The mattress has multiple firmness options, allowing most sleepers to find a suitable model.

The Birch Natural is a great option if you’re looking for a sustainable, responsive bed. It features natural latex and individually wrapped coils for comfort and support. Its firmness is best suited to back and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, though, so side sleeepers should opt for a softer bed, like the Helix Midnight. Learn more in our video review.

Because of their hypoallergenic materials, organic mattresses tend to be a good fit for sleepers who struggle with allergies, which is why there are so many of them on this list. But we’d be remiss to not include the Birch, an all-natural bed created by the folks at Helix. Free of harmful chemicals, this mattress combines the softness of organic cotton and wool with responsive latex foam and a support layer of individually wrapped coils. The end result is an eco-friendly mattress that’s responsive and supportive enough for back sleepers, combination sleepers, and stomach sleepers alike.

What Makes the Birch Stand Out?

  • If you want a mattress with even more luxurious touches, Birch also offers a luxe model.
  • The Birch clocks in at a 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, so this is a pretty firm bed.

The Avocado Green is a luxury medium-firm mattress that caters to those looking for a mattress featuring organic and natural construction. Its hybrid construction supports most back sleepers and some side sleepers while also helping it excel at cooling. View our full Avocado Green video review for more information.

Because the best mattresses for allergies tend to have a lot of breathability, most of the beds on this list score well when it comes to cooling. But we wanted to pay special attention to the Avocado, as we’ve consistently found it to be one of the best cooling mattresses out there. Its comfort layer is made of naturally cooling Dunlop latex rubber foam, and an 8” support layer of pocketed coils allows a ton of air to flow throughout the bed. Overall, this is a responsive medium-firm mattress that’s a good fit for back sleepers and side sleepers.

What Makes the Avocado Stand Out?

  • For an extra charge, you can add a pillow-top made of organic wool and latex, which gives the Avocado some extra softness.
  • It doesn’t contain any environmentally harmful chemicals, making it a very eco-friendly mattress.
  • The Avocado has excellent edge support, allowing couples to utilize the entire surface of the bed without feeling like they’re going to fall off.

Best Types of Mattresses for Allergies

Mattresses come in all shapes and sizes, and each one has different strengths and drawbacks. When it comes to allergies, here are some of the best beds for keeping them at bay.

  • Latex Mattresses: Both Talalay latex and Dunlop latex are naturally breathable, meaning that, as materials, they’re resistant to moisture, and thus mold and mildew. The breathability also keeps you from feeling smothered — a plus if you’re someone whose allergies already make it difficult to breathe at night. Finally, latex is resistant to dust mites, especially the Dunlop variety. It’s denser than Talalay, so there’s not much room for the little buggers to live.
  • Memory Foam MattressesAlthough not as breathable as latex, memory foam is considered hypoallergenic. Its density also makes it difficult for dust mites to occupy. But if you have a hard time breathing because of your allergies, you’re probably better off with latex.
  • Hybrid Mattresses: A hybrid mattress just means that it contains several different types of materials. It can be a combination of latex, memory foam, coils, or something else entirely. As you can see from the above list, many of the mattresses we included are technically hybrids and contain a sizable layer of latex. This makes the beds hypoallergenic, and a good option for allergy sufferers.

We should also take a moment to talk about innerspring mattresses. It’s rare that you’ll find a bed with a true innerspring design that contains no additional foams or other padding. More often than not, they’ve been updated to the hybrid form that includes latex, memory foam, and other materials that add to their comfort.

While a hybrid mattress is great for allergies (see above), an outdated innerspring bed is going to leave a significant amount of room between the coils for dust mites and other allergens to build up.

Best Type of Bedding for Allergies

Creating an allergy-free sleeping environment isn’t just about the type of mattress you buy; bedding can play a huge role, too. When it comes to sheets, blankets, pillows, and pillowcases, here are some of the traits to look out for.

  • Natural Materials: Cotton, wool, silk, linen, and bamboo are all dust mite-resistant and are unlikely to activate your allergies.
  • Tightly Woven: Tightly woven bedding is going to have smaller pores, which makes it harder for moisture to build up. If you see this trait listed in the product description, that’s usually a good sign. Or if you see the word “hypoallergenic,” that means the bedding is allergy-resistant and most likely has a tightly woven construction.
  • Washability: Frequently washing your bedding is a great way to keep it free of allergens. If it’s not machine-washable and has to be professionally cleaned, you’ll probably want to steer clear.

One final piece of advice is to avoid bedding that allows moisture to build up. As comfortable as down and loose fiberfill can be, they create a lot of empty space and are more porous than the above materials. Once again, it’s all about fabrics that are tightly woven and have a lot of density.

Other Tips for Sleeping With Allergies

In addition to finding the best mattress for allergies and the right kind of bedding, there are a few other steps you can take to ensure healthy sleep.

  • Look Into a Mattress Protector: Even if you aren’t in a financial place to get a brand-new mattress, investing in a quality mattress protector can help stave off allergens and create a cleaner, more hypoallergenic sleeping surface. Check out our roundup of the best mattress protectors for some suggestions. Even if you do buy a new mattress, a high-quality mattress protector is still a great investment!
  • Pay Attention to Sleep Trials: If you’re a sensitive sleeper because of your allergies, you may want to purchase a new mattress with a generous sleep trial. That way, you can test it out and see if it’s the right fit. Trial and warranty information can usually be found on each product’s website.
  • Reconsider Sleeping With Your Pet: If you have a cat or a dog that sleeps next to you, they could be making your allergies worse. You might want to consider if it’s worth all of the sniffling. And maybe it is! But you also might want to think about investing in a pet bed.

Mattresses for Allergies FAQ

What is a hypoallergenic mattress?

“Hypoallergenic” is just a fancy term used to describe materials that are resistant to various causes of allergies. In the case of mattresses, that means foam, latex, and specially treated covers — all of which can help keep away allergens such as dust, dust mites, pollen, and mold.

Is memory foam good for allergies?

Because of its density, memory foam is hypoallergenic toward dust mites; they simply won’t have as much room to burrow for warmth. That being said, when it comes to hypoallergenic mattress foams, we gravitate more toward latex because it’s more breathable than memory foam and can be more affective against dust, pollen, and other allergens that can negatively impact your breathing.

What bedding is best for allergies?

We recommend sheets and blankets made of wool, microfibers, and/or organic cotton. These materials tend to be hypoallergenic, especially when it comes to dust mites.
