The Nectar is an affordable all-foam mattress that offers lots of pressure relief and body contouring. It works well for most side sleepers, because it helps cushion shoulders and hips. It is also a good option for couples, because it isolates motion well. However, the Nectar mattress isn’t supportive enough for most stomach sleepers and heavyweight people. If you tend to sleep hot at night, you may want to look for a mattress with more cooling features. Learn more in our Nectar mattress video review.

Our Expert’s Take

Side sleepers often develop pressure along their shoulders and hips, but on the Nectar mattress, that shouldn’t become an issue. This slow-moving memory foam mattress gently cushions pressure points and offers the pressure relief side sleepers need. This, paired with the high-density base foam, creates a balanced feel that helps side sleepers with scoliosis maintain the proper spinal alignment.

Another perk: You don’t have to worry about overheating on the Nectar mattress! This bed contains a layer of gel memory foam, which helps dissipate body heat and keep sleepers cool. There’s a lot to love about this affordable bed-in-a-box mattress.

What the testers say: “Side sleeping on the Nectar is great. I did feel some pressure on my hips and shoulders a bit, but overall, most people who sleep in this position should feel good.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Nectar

  • With its medium-firm feel, the Nectar mattress is a great balance of comfort and support. Plus, the slow-moving plush foam layers in the Nectar deliver lots of pressure relief, which is ideal for side sleepers.
  • The bed incorporates a lot of cooling features into its design, which prevents the all-foam bed from trapping heat to the same extent as that of a typical memory foam bed. Based on our heat gun analysis, after a tester had rested on the Nectar, the bed’s surface temperature only rose 1.9 degrees F.
  • The Nectar has sturdy edges. We measured a 3.5″ dip on the bed’s edge under the weight of our heaviest (~250 lbs) tester, which is better than comparable memory foam mattresses at the same price point.
  • The Nectar has an affordable price tag and you can reasonably expect it to last 8 to 10 years, which gives it great value for the money.

What to Keep in Mind About the Nectar

  • The all-foam Nectar mattress isn’t a good fit for people who like responsive or bouncy mattresses. The foams trap movement, hence the bed’s middle-of-the-road responsiveness score (3/5) from testers. If bounce is what you want, you should consider the Nectar Hybrid mattress, which has a bouncy innerspring coil layer.
  • The Nectar mattress doesn’t have sufficient support for most stomach sleepers, who will experience drooping in the hips. That can worsen lower back pain.
  • Heavyweight sleepers exceeding 230 lbs will also find the mattress isn’t supportive enough.

Other user reviews

The Nectar mattress has tens of thousands of reviews on the Nectar site, with a 4.7 overall rating. Reviewers credit the mattress for relieving pain in the low back and hips.

The DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress that offers great support for back sleepers and nice cooling for hot sleepers. Its mix of foam and coils ensures you get the right amount of support, while its breathable materials ensure you don’t sleep too hot. It is a bouncier mattress, and if you prefer more of a memory foam feel, consider the Nectar mattress. Learn more in our video review.

Our Expert’s Take

Firm mattresses won’t work for every person with scoliosis, but for some back and stomach sleepers, it’s exactly what they need in order to feel supported and comfortable at night. If you fall in this category, check out the DreamCloud mattress.

This bed feels like a 7.5/10 on our firmness scale, which is a point higher than the industry standard. Heavier back sleepers and average weight back sleepers should find this mattress to be a great pick.

The DreamCloud has a classic hybrid construction with pressure-relieving memory foam on top and supportive, individually-wrapped coils at the bottom. To make things even more luxurious, it has a tufted pillow top and a cashmere-blend cover.

What the testers say: “When I tested the DreamCloud, I found it to be very bouncy, but also supportive. On my back, I could feel it keeping my spine in a neutral position, and because of that, I’d recommend this for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the DreamCloud

  • With its medium-firm feel and precise balance of comfort and support, the DreamCloud is a great choice for back sleepers.
  • The DreamCloud has a breathable cover, airflow-promoting coils, and gel-infused memory foam, which makes it a great option for hot sleepers.
  • The coils in the DreamCloud give the mattress a bouncy, responsive feel. That makes it easy for sleepers to change position at night.

What to Keep in Mind About the DreamCloud

  • The DreamCloud mattress doesn’t isolate motion well, which can be an issue for couples who share the bed.
  • Edge support is also lacking on the DreamCloud mattress. The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ has a reinforced edge that makes it easier to get in and out of bed.

Other user reviews

With more than 8,500 reviews and an overall rating of 4.6 stars, the DreamCloud has its share of happy customers according to their website. Reviews credit the mattress for relieving back pain and a noticeably improved night’s sleep.

Couples
This bed absorbs motion well for a hybrid mattress, so couples shouldn’t notice their partner’s movements.
Pros of the Helix Midnight Mattress
The Helix Midnight mattress is a fantastic choice for back and side sleepers. It’s a perfect medium-firm mattress that offers a lot of comfort from the foam at the top with supportive coils at the bottom.
This mattress shouldn’t trap too much heat thanks to the coils, which allow for airflow. You also have the option to add a specialized cooling cover.
Hybrid mattresses can be bouncy and disturb others who are in bed, but the Helix Midnight absorbs motion very well for this type of mattress.
Cons of the Helix Midnight Mattress
This mattress is too soft to support stomach sleepers. The hips will dip into this bed over time, which can cause strain on the lower back.
While this bed absorbs motion well, it’s still a hybrid. If you don’t want that bouncy, coil feeling to your mattress, you should look for an all-foam bed.

The Helix Midnight is Helix’s most popular model because of its medium-firmness and works well for back and side sleepers. The top layers of foam provide good pressure relief, but the coils offer a good amount of support. It won’t trap heat thanks to those coils, and you can even opt for a cooling cover. Be sure to watch our video review to learn more about the Helix Midnight.

Our Expert’s Take

If you have scoliosis, you’ll want to maintain the correct spinal alignment at night. Back sleepers typically need firmer mattresses that offer both comfort and support. With the Helix Midnight, you’ll get all of that and more.

The Helix Midnight mattress comes in at 7/10 on our firmness scale, which is a half point higher than the industry standard of medium-firm. The Memory Plus Foam offers excellent body contouring, while the Helix Responsive Foam layer offers the lumbar support back sleepers need.

The Helix Midnight mattress is also a great choice for couples because it isolates motion well and has excellent edge support. Under the weight of our heaviest tester (250 lbs, roughly), the edge only sank 2.25″, which is comparable to many higher-end luxury hybrid beds.

What the testers say: “I sleep on both my side and back, and the Midnight mattress proved to be a great fit for both of these positions. The Memory Plus Foam allowed me to sink into the layers for some much needed comfort, while the coil layer added a nice touch of support..” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Helix Midnight

  • With its airflow-promoting coils, the Helix Midnight helps dissipate body heat for cooler, more comfortable nights. We measured a 3.4 degree F rise in temperature after a sleeper was on the bed with our infrared thermal gun. Our testers gave the bed a 4.5/5 cooling score, as that rise in temperature is on par with the amount of body heat that lingers on the sleep surface of a typical cooling hybrid mattress.
  • The mattress has a balanced foam feel that delivers ample pressure relief without making you feel like you’re sinking into the uppermost layers. In fact, testers gave the responsiveness of the bed a 4/5 for its ability to bounce back quickly.
  • The medium-firm feel of the Helix Midnight helps sleepers maintain proper spinal alignment during the night.

What to Keep in Mind About the Helix Midnight

  • Stomach sleepers are likely to find the Helix Midnight doesn’t have the support to keep the hips properly elevated. The Helix Dawn is a better choice.
  • Side sleepers in higher weight ranges won’t get enough pressure relief in the hips and shoulders and should consider the Helix Midnight Elite mattress instead.

Other user reviews

The Helix Midnight mattress has 4.5 stars based on more than 6,500 reviews on the company site. Customers confirm that it’s an ideal balance of comfort and support and delivers impressive back pain relief.

The WinkBed is a versatile mattress that provides zoned support and cooling comfort for a fair price. For couples looking for motion isolation, though, this probably isn’t the best choice. Instead, check out the Nectar Premier Copper. Learn more in our video review.

Our Expert’s Take

Unfortunately, scoliosis and back pain often go hand in hand. If this problem is plaguing you, consider the WinkBed mattress. This bed has a classic innerspring construction with supportive coils and a luxurious tufted pillow top, but it’s the zoned support that really helps those with back pain.

Zoned support coils feel firmer toward the center of the mattress, which helps sleepers maintain the correct spinal alignment in all three sleeping positions. Resting in the proper spinal alignment can help alleviate back pain!

What the testers say: “The WinkBed gave a good balance of comfort and support. The zoning allows for some nice lumbar support, and side sleepers should know that I got some great pressure relief on this mattress.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the WinkBed

  • With its breathable Tencel cover, cooling gel foam and airflow-promoting coils, the WinkBed is one of the best cooling mattresses.
  • The mattress comes in four firmness options, including a Plus model that’s specifically designed for heavier people.
  • Edge support is excellent on the WinkBed, thanks to the supportive coils. You should feel supported and secure sitting and lying down near the edge.

What to Keep in Mind About the WinkBed

  • Motion isolation is lacking in the WinkBed mattress. It has the bouncy feel of a classic innerspring, so people who share their bed may want to consider one of the best mattresses for couples instead.
  • The mattress is one of the best under $2,000, but it’s still pricey. Prospective customers should check out our Mattress Clarity coupons, which could save you as much as $300.

Our Expert’s Take

If you’re in the market for a luxury mattress but don’t want your scoliosis limiting you from high-quality choices, the Saatva Rx may be for you.

Its quilted cover, high-density foam, and quick-response coil layers–made with durable materials–provide significant relief to the lumbar area, earning the Saatva Rx a perfect 5/5 score for support.

In fact, with reinforced edges, it’s clear that support is this mattress’s main goal. The Saatva Rx earned another 5/5 score for edge support, making it a great choice for couples.

What the testers say: “The Saatva Rx felt great when I was on my back. The coils offered good support and some of the best contouring I have ever experienced. The Rx features Patented Lumbar Zone Quilting and a gel-infused memory foam lumbar crown, which gave me extra lumbar support. It was also a good match for side sleeping.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Saatva Rx

  • Despite being designed specifically to alleviate conditions like scoliosis, according to Saatva, the mattress is soft-to-the-touch with a plush, pressure-relieving top.
  • With phase-change materials and graphite infused into its foam, the Saatva Rx follows in the footsteps of other hybrid mattresses as a good option for those who sleep hot.
  • Because of its durable materials, our tester believes the Saatva Rx should last at least 10 years.

What to Keep in Mind About the Saatva Rx

  • Heavyweight sleepers might sink into this mattress and not receive proper support under their hips and center mass.
  • Fans of the traditional memory-foam feel should explore other options, as the Saatva Rx lacks the slow-moving quality of foam.

Other user reviews

There are close to 75 reviews of the Saatva Rx on the Saatva website, with an average rating of 4.9 stars. Customers rave about its relieving support and quality construction, and many also have high praise for the service they experienced with Saatva.

If you fall in this category, you may need more lumbar support. Watch our Nolah Evolution mattress review video to learn more.

Our Expert’s Take

The Nolah Evolution mattress has zoned support coils, which means it feels firmer in the center and softer near the head and foot. This helps sleepers maintain the proper spinal alignment, which is exactly what people with scoliosis and arthritis need! No matter your sleep position, you should feel the necessary comfort and support on the Nolah Evolution.

That’s not the only good thing about this luxurious mattress! It also performs well when it comes to motion transfer and edge support, making it a great option for couples.

What the testers say: “The Nolah Evolution is a high-quality mattress, and I could feel that as soon as I lay down on it. It’s cooling, thanks to the materials in the cover and top layer, and it gives an overall luxury feel.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Nolah Evolution

  • With its airflow-promoting coils and graphite-infused foam, the Nolah Evolution is one of the best cooling mattresses on the market.
  • The mattress is made with high-quality materials, so you can expect it to perform well for at least a decade.
  • It isolates motion exceptionally well, thanks to the soft foam in the top layers.

What to Keep in Mind About the Nolah Evolution

  • The Nolah Evolution falls into the luxury mattress category, which may mean it’s out of budget for some people. The original Nolah mattress might be a better option.
  • The Nolah Evolution has a classic medium-firm feel, so fans of firm mattresses should look elsewhere.

Other user reviews

The Nolah Evolution is highly rated with 4.9 stars on the Nolah website. Reviewers rave about its optimal support and comfort, and many say the mattress has resolved hip and back pain and makes for much more restful nights.

What the testers say: “The Bear Star mattress has a perfectly balanced feel – not too firm, but not too soft. It’s great for combination sleepers, but on my side, this mattress felt a bit too firm.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Bear Star Hybrid

  • Hot sleepers will appreciate heat-wicking fabric in the cover and copper infusions in the top comfort layer.
  • Despite its hybrid construction, the Bear Star Hybrid absorbs motion well. That makes it one of the best mattresses for couples.
  • The mattress also has excellent edge support, which means you can sleep comfortably all the way to the edge.

What to Keep in Mind About the Bear Star Hybrid

  • Stomach sleepers may not feel properly supported on the Bear Star Hybrid and should consider a firmer mattress.
  • Shoppers on a budget may find that the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is too expensive.

Our Expert’s Take

Brooklyn Bedding owns their own factory, so they can slash prices and offer impressive seasonal sales. If you’re trying to make an economical decision, you can’t go wrong with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress.

This hybrid mattress has a straightforward design made with high-quality materials. It’s available in three firmness levels (Soft, Medium, and Firm), so it works well for many different types of people. Most people with scoliosis, however, will want to choose the Medium option. This bed helps support the curvature of the spine and alleviate pain along pressure points.

And because it contains individually-encased coils, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress is both breathable and durable.

What the testers say: “The Signature mattress is one of the more luxury feeling value mattresses that I’ve tested. It comes in three firmness levels, so most sleepers should be able to find a mattress that fits their needs.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

  • The responsive nature of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature means it’s a great option for combination sleepers who change position at night.
  • With a choice of firmness, the Signature mattress can accommodate the preferences of different kinds of sleepers.
  • Brooklyn Bedding owns its own factory and cuts out the middleman, which means its mattresses are less expensive than many competitors.

What to Keep in Mind About the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

  • The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe has more bells and whistles than the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, which may appeal to some sleepers.
  • With the springy coils at the bottom of the mattress, it’s missing the slow-moving memory foam feel that some people appreciate.

The Plank Firm mattress is one of the most supportive mattresses on the market. It has a flippable design, with two firmness levels in one. On our firmness scale, the the softer side feels like a 8/10 and the firmer side feels like a 9/10. Both sides tend to work well for stomach sleepers, but most side sleepers won’t get enough pressure relief on this bed. Watch our video review to learn more.

Our Expert’s Take

If you prefer the support of a firm mattress but your scoliosis demands something with a little give, the Plank Firm, created by Brooklyn Bedding, is a great choice for you.

This all-foam mattress was crafted with a flippable design, allowing you to alternate between its firm and extra-firm sides, earning it a score of 5/5 for support from mattress testers. With its top layers of quilted polyfoam and a layer of Supreme Response Comfort Foam on its firm side, the Plank Firm mattress will provide a bit of cushioning while still prioritizing support.

What the testers say: “The Firm side feels like an 8/10 on our firmness scale, while the extra-firm side feels like a 9/10. Both sides of the Plank Firm are much firmer than most mattresses on the market, which makes this bed a good option for stomach sleepers.”         Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Plank Firm

  • The support provided by the Plank Firm mattress is great for those suffering from back pain, since the lumbar region will be robustly supported.
  • The Plank Firm prevents the hips from sinking out of alignment, making it an excellent choice for people who prefer sleeping on their stomach.
  • You don’t have to worry about getting stuck in this mattress. Its firmer surface gives the bed a responsive feel that makes it easy to move around.
  • When Marten, our heaviest mattress tester, sat on the edge of the Plank Firm it only sank 2.5″ under his weight. As such, we awarded it a perfect score on our edge support test, and feel confident that the mattress perimeter will adequately support even heavyweight sleepers.

What to Keep in Mind About the Plank Firm

  • Even among those who enjoy a firm mattress, the Plank Firm might be too firm for side and back sleepers. The “softer” side rates an 8/10 on our firmness scale, and the firmer side a 9/10.
  • Its all-foam construction means the Plank Firm won’t be the most breathable mattress on the market. In fact, when we measured its cooling capabilities using our thermal camera, we found the results to be disappointing, and so it earned a 3.5/5 on our temperature regulation test. Fans of a more cooling mattress will have to pay extra for a cooling panel to be included with their bed, or consider a different mattress, such as the Nolah Evolution Hybrid.

Other user reviews

The Plank Firm has 4.7 stars based on over 3,100 reviews on the Plank Mattress site. Customers say it’s the perfect combination of comfort and firmness.

What Type of Mattress is Best For Someone with Scoliosis?

People with scoliosis have spines that curve sideways, which can cause chronic pain. This often makes it difficult to fall asleep, so it’s particularly important for scoliosis sufferers to find a mattress that promotes a neutral, straight spinal alignment.

You might be wondering which type of mattress is best for your needs. Like many health-related products, it’s not one-size-fits-all. Here’s a brief rundown of all of the different kinds of mattresses and how they can help people with scoliosis.

Memory Foam

Most memory foam mattresses have a slow-moving feel. The plushness is great for side sleepers with scoliosis because it helps alleviate pressure along the shoulders and hips, and it promotes the proper spinal alignment.

Memory foam mattresses may not work well for stomach sleepers with scoliosis, because it could cause the sleepers’ hips to sink out of alignment. As a general rule of thumb, it’s not ideal for those with scoliosis to sleep on their stomach because it often leads to neck and lower back pain.

If you tend to sleep hot at night, look for a memory foam mattress with cooling features. Pure memory foam tends to trap body heat, but if it has an open-cell construction or gel infusion, it feels much cooler.

Latex

People love latex mattresses because they feel more breathable than other types of beds. They’re also more responsive, so it’s easier for people with scoliosis to move around on top of the bed. Because latex mattresses tend to feel more supportive, they work well for back and stomach sleepers. Some side sleepers might need a softer mattress that offers more pressure relief, so it’s always important to investigate the firmness level of the mattress before making a final decision.

Keep in mind that some people have a latex allergy or sensitivity.  Latex sensitivity is often dose-related, meaning it develops after repeated exposures.  Many people with only mild latex sensitivity can sleep on latex mattresses without problems, but take this into consideration if you have a history of latex sensitivity.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses contain two or more different materials. In most cases, they have coils at the bottom and memory foam on top. These mattresses feel balanced – you’ll get plenty of pressure relief, but it’s still easy to move around on top of the bed. Hybrid mattresses come in many different firmness levels, so they’re great options for people with scoliosis. As long as the bed supports the spine and cushions joints, it should be a good match.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses were once the most popular type of bed on the market, but nowadays, they’re harder to come by. Traditional innerspring beds have a thick row of coils for support and a tufted pillow top for comfort. Because they lack thick comfort layers, they tend to feel firmer than hybrids and memory foam mattresses.

What To Look For In A Mattress For Scoliosis

Now that we know about the different mattress models, let’s take a closer look at the important elements to consider when shopping for a scoliosis-friendly mattress.

Firmness

Most people with scoliosis need medium-firm mattresses that can support the spine and cushion pressure points. However, this can vary significantly depending on a person’s body type and sleeping position. For example, heavyweight sleepers need firmer mattresses, while lightweight sleepers need softer ones.

Side sleepers typically need soft mattresses that can cushion shoulders and hips. Back sleepers do well with firmer beds that can support the lower back, and stomach sleepers need extra firm beds in order to keep the hips in alignment.

Fortunately, most companies offer generous sleep trial periods, so you can easily test out your new mattress and find the right one.

Feel

This boils down to personal preference. Some people love slow-moving memory foam mattresses, while others prefer bouncy innerspring beds. The way a mattress feels shouldn’t impact spinal alignment too much, but if you suffer from severe back pain, you may want to find a responsive mattress that’s easy to get in and out of.

Cooling

Most mattresses have built-in cooling features that prevent sleepers from overheating at night. But if you are a particularly hot sleeper, you may want to stray away from all-foam beds and opt for a hybrid or latex mattress.

Motion Isolation & Edge Support

If you share a bed with a partner, you’ll want to make sure your bed isolates motion well. If it doesn’t, you may feel your partner’s movements on your side of the bed and wake up if they toss and turn during the night.

Edge support also plays a large role in how comfortable couples feel at night. Beds with poor edge support force couples to sleep closer to the center of the mattress, which can make each person feel hot and cramped.

Pricing

You don’t have to break the bank in order to find a good mattress for scoliosis. Some options, like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, are sold at budget-friendly prices. Others, like the Saatva Rx, have extra bells and whistles that make the price point worth it.

Durability – h3

All of the mattresses featured in this roundup should last at least seven years. Some, like the Saatva Rx and WinkBed, may last over a decade. Price points tend to correlate with durability, so it may be worthwhile to spend more up front in order to get a longer-lasting bed.

FAQs

Still have questions about the best mattresses for scoliosis? Read on!

Is a firm mattress good for scoliosis?

We recommend medium-firm mattresses for most people with scoliosis. It’s important for people with scoliosis to feel both comfort and support in order to maintain the proper spinal alignment, and firm beds often don’t offer enough pressure relief. Some heavier people, however, may find that firm beds are more supportive and prevent them from “bottoming out” on the mattress.

Is sleeping on the floor good for scoliosis?

No, it’s not a good idea to sleep on the floor if you have scoliosis. If you have this condition, your spine is curved sideways. Resting on the floor could exacerbate back pain, so it’s important to make sure your sleep surface offers both comfort and support.

Can bad sleeping posture cause scoliosis?

No, bad sleeping posture does not cause scoliosis. This condition is mostly idiopathic, which means it’s not associated with one particular cause. Many studies suggest it’s a genetic condition.

No matter your mattress choice, sleeping with a pillow between your knees when lying on your side or under your knees when lying on your back can help keep your spine in a better alignment at night.
