Bear Natural Mattress Review: General Overview

While the Bear Natural Mattress isn’t entirely organic, it is made with organic materials. Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified cotton and natural Talalay latex add breathability and pressure relief, while zoned coils below provide responsive support. All of the materials in the Bear Natural are non-toxic and vegan, and the mattress has eco-Institut, Greenguard Gold and EcoFlex Fiberglass-Free certifications.

So, who might like the Bear Natural? Let’s break down the pros and cons.

Pros of the Bear Natural Comfort Mattress

  • It’s made with eco-friendly materials.
  • Latex is temperature neutral, so this mattress is a great pick for hot sleepers.
  • Back sleepers in particular should enjoy a nice balance of comfort and support.

Cons of the Bear Natural Comfort Mattress

  • Fans of memory foam should look elsewhere, as it lacks the slow-moving feel of that material.
  • It’s pricey, so it may be out of budget for some people.
  • Strict side sleepers in certain weight ranges may feel too much pressure in their hips and shoulders.

Bear Natural Firmness and Feel

Firmness and feel are a great place to start when you’re reviewing a mattress. It can inform who might benefit the most from a particular mattress.

How Firm is the Bear Natural Mattress?

We scored the Bear Natural Mattress a 6.5/10, which makes it a true medium-firm option. It’s a firmness that works well for a variety of people.

Sleeping on the Bear Natural Mattress

The Bear Natural was a perfect match for back sleeping. My hips sunk into the plusher top layers, while the coils below offered plenty of support from head to toe.

When I rolled to my side, the mattress was surprisingly comfortable on my shoulders and hips. However, I am heavier, so I sink more deeply into mattresses. Light and average-weight side sleepers might not compress the top layers enough to get sufficient pressure relief on these areas.

The Bear Natural was decent for stomach sleeping, since the zoning provided more support under my hips. Still, strict stomach sleepers who weigh as much as I do might need just a touch more support.

What Does the Bear Natural Mattress Feel Like?

The Bear Natural has a very bouncy latex hybrid feel. Latex has a uniquely buoyant sensation—you get the feeling that you’re sleeping on the mattress, not being enveloped by it. I didn’t sink in too far and it was easy to move around and change positions, so it’s a great option for combination sleepers.

Average (130-230 lbs)GreatFairGreat
Heavyweight (over 230 lbs)GoodGoodPoor

Is the Bear Natural Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?

  • Lightweight back sleepers should enjoy ample support from the Bear Natural Mattress, thanks to its latex and innerspring layers.
  • Lightweight side sleepers may find the mattress is too firm around the hips and shoulders.
  • Stomach sleepers in this weight range will find the mattress keeps their hips properly supported.

Is the Bear Natural Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?

  • Similar to lightweight people, average weight back sleepers should fare just fine on the Bear Natural Mattress. It has plenty of support to keep the spine aligned.
  • Average-weight back sleepers, particularly those close to 130 lbs, are likely to notice pressure building in the hips and shoulders, so the Bear Natural probably isn’t the best option.
  • Stomach sleepers should also find this mattress a great fit. The latex and innerspring coils will keep the hips elevated and ensure a neutral spine.

Is the Bear Natural Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?

  • Heavyweight back sleepers under 300 pounds should be comfortable, but those over that number will likely need more support.
  • Side sleepers in this weight range should get enough pressure relief, but much heavier people will want something like the Titan Plus Luxe to avoid pressure point pain.
  • Heavyweight stomach sleepers will also need something firmer and more supportive than the Bear Natural.

Bear Natural Mattress Construction

A side view of the Bear Natural mattress

Now that we’ve gone over how the Bear Natural Mattress feels, let’s go under the covers (so to speak). Here’s how the mattress is constructed and how each element affects performance.

Cover

The mattress has a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover that’s both soft and breathable. It’s quilted, giving the mattress a subtle pillow top effect.

Comfort Layers

The primary comfort layer comes from sustainably-sourced Talalay latex. This gives the mattress its medium-firm feel, helps maintain a neutral temperature, and adds pressure relief and durability. Below, a responsive transition layer helps counteract the bounciness of the latex, adding a bit of motion isolation.

Support Layers

Individually-wrapped coils are zoned to offer enhanced lumbar support. Stronger coils around the mattress perimeter boost edge support (an important consideration for couples who need to maximize the sleep surface). Finally, the mattress is supported with a base layer of DuraDense foam.

Bear Natural Mattress Performance

To see how the mattress materials and construction perform, I put the Bear Natural through a series of tests. Here’s what you can expect from this mattress when it comes to temperature regulation, motion isolation, edge support, durability and other considerations.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Hot sleepers should find some relief on the Bear Natural. It has a breathable cover and latex doesn’t trap body heat like memory foam is known to do. Plus, the hybrid construction promotes airflow.

Motion Transfer

Latex is responsive, but it doesn’t isolate motion particularly well. That makes the Bear Natural quite bouncy, so you may see some motion transfer across the bed. Couples should take note, especially if one of you is a restless sleeper. The best mattresses for couples should always include good motion isolation.

Edge Support

The edge support is fantastic on this mattress, thanks to the enhanced perimeter. You should have no problem sitting or laying near the edge of the bed.

Durability

Latex hybrids are durable, so you can reasonably expect the Bear Natural to last for 10 years or possibly longer without sagging.

Off-gassing

I didn’t notice the normal chemical off-gassing, but there was an earthy smell when we unboxed it. It did go away after a few days.

Noise

The Bear Natural isn’t a noisy mattress. It didn’t squeak when I moved around, but because there are springs, there’s a chance this might happen as the mattress ages.

Sex

The latex and coils in this mattress make it very easy to move around. The responsiveness should make it a great option for sex.

Bear Natural Company Policies

If you’re buying a mattress online, it’s important to be clear about company policies relating to warranties, sleep trials and returns. Here’s what to expect with the Bear Natural.

Warranty

The Bear Natural mattress has a lifetime warranty, which covers manufacturer defects for the entire time you own it.

Sleep Trial

The mattress has a 120-night sleep trial, which should give you enough time to decide if it’s a good fit or not.

Return Policy

From date of delivery, you have 120 days to request a return. If the mattress doesn’t work out, returns are free.

Common Bear Natural Mattress Complaints

The Bear Natural is a newer model, so reviews (both good and bad) are limited. However, we did find feedback from people who have purchased other Bear mattresses. While many reviews are positive, some said they had issues returning the mattress, while others experienced premature sagging with some models.

How Does The Bear Natural Compare To Others?

If you’re considering the Bear Natural, you might be comparing it to other eco-friendly mattresses made with natural and organic materials. Here’s how the Bear Natural stacks up to popular competitors.

Compare Bear mattresses to other brands on our mattress comparison page.

Bear Natural vs Nest Owl Mattress

Both the Bear Natural and the Nest Owl are latex hybrid mattresses with a similar price point, but the Owl has a plusher pillow top for a softer feel. This model also has firmness options, which can make it suitable to a wide variety of people. The Bear Natural has zoned support, which is a great feature if you have back pain, but that’s something the Owl lacks.

Bear Natural vs Awara

The Awara is a natural latex hybrid, but it’s firmer than the Bear Natural, which makes it a better option for stomach sleepers. It’s also more affordable than the Bear Natural mattress. However, the Bear will offer better pressure relief and has zoning for better lumbar support.
