Avocado Eco Organic vs Birch Overview

Avocado sells many different products, including their flagship Avocado Green mattress, the Avocado pillow, and the Avocado mattress topper. For this comparison, however, we’ll focus on the Avocado Eco Organic mattress. This model is Avocado’s budget-friendly option, but it still has many impressive features.

Birch mattresses are made by Helix Sleep, a company that’s dedicated to giving customers plenty of options. Firmness and Feel Differences

Though they may look identical, there are some subtle differences between these two mattresses. The Avocado Eco Organic mattress feels like a 7.5/10 on our firmness scale. This is a point higher than medium firm, so if you need extra support, this could be a good option. The Birch mattress, on the other hand, is only a half point firmer than the industry standard (a 7/10 on the firmness scale). This makes it a better choice for those who want a slightly softer mattress.

Thanks to the latex comfort layers and innerspring coils, both mattresses feel responsive and bouncy. You won’t feel like you’re sinking into these mattresses, and they’re easy to move around on.

Sleeping On the Avocado Eco Organic and Birch Mattresses

The Avocado Eco Organic mattress works exceptionally well for stomach sleepers, but it’s a bit too firm for back and side sleepers. Back sleepers will need a bit more cushioning, and side sleepers might feel some pressure along their shoulders and hips.

Avocado Eco Organic - back sleeping

The Birch mattress feels slightly softer, so it works well for back and stomach sleepers. It’s still not soft enough to work for side sleepers, though. In this sleeping position, people need lots of body contouring and pressure relief. If you fall in this category, check out our list of the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Birch Mattress - Back Sleeping

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

The Avocado Eco Organic mattress works well for average weight stomach sleepers. This mattress feels especially firm, so it provides plenty of hip support. If a stomach sleeper rests on a soft mattress, there’s a chance their hips will dip out of alignment, which can create lower back pain.

It’s important to note, though, that because the Eco Organic is so supportive, it won’t work well for average weight back and side sleepers. In these sleeping positions, people will need more cushioning along pressure points at the shoulders and hips.

The Birch mattress works well for average weight back and stomach sleepers. Because it feels slightly softer than the Eco Organic, the Birch creates a good balance of comfort and support. However, it’s still not a great choice for average weight side sleepers. People in this category need plush mattresses with thick comfort layers.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Most heavyweight stomach sleepers will feel well supported on the Eco Organic mattress. Those who weigh more than 300 lb, however, might need a mattress for heavy people that’s made specifically for them. And unfortunately, this bed is still too firm for heavyweight back and side sleepers.

It’s a similar story with the Birch mattress. Back and stomach sleepers who weigh between 230 lb and 300 lb should get the comfort and support they need. Those who weigh more than 300 lb, though, might bottom out on this mattress. We also don’t recommend the Birch mattress for heavyweight side sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Not much changes for lightweight sleepers. The Avocado Eco Organic works best for lightweight stomach sleepers, but it’s too firm for smaller back and side sleepers.

The Birch mattress creates plenty of comfort and support for lightweight back and stomach sleepers. But again, it’s not plush enough for lightweight side sleepers.

Mattress Construction Differences

To really understand the differences between these two mattresses, we’ll need to look at each layer individually.

Cover

Both mattresses have covers made out of 100% organic cotton. They feel stretchy, thin, and breathable.

Comfort Layers

The similarities continue! Under the cover, both mattresses contain a layer of 100% organic wool. This material not only creates some softness – it also acts as a natural fire barrier.

Avocado Eco Organic - construction

There is one significant difference between these two mattresses. The Avocado Eco Organic features Dunlop latex, which feels especially firm and supportive. The Birch contains ventilated Talalay latex, a softer material that creates a bit more cushioning. Both types of latex feel cool and breathable, though, so they work well for hot sleepers.

Birch Mattress - Construction

Support Layer

Both mattresses have supportive innerspring coil systems, which help the beds stay bouncy and responsive. They also promote airflow – another win for hot sleepers.

Mattress Height

The Avocado Eco Organic mattress is 10” tall, and the Birch mattress is 11” tall.

Avocado Eco Organic And Birch Performance Differences

We always run mattresses through a series of tests to determine their cooling capabilities, motion isolation, edge support, and durability. Now, let’s see which mattress performs the best in each category.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

If you’re a hot sleeper, latex mattresses are a great way to go. This material feels very responsive, and it doesn’t trap heat like memory foam often does.

Plus, both beds contain innerspring coil systems! These springs create lots of room for air to flow through the mattress. Overall, we don’t expect sleepers to run hot on either mattress.

Motion Transfer

If you’re looking for one of the best mattresses for couples, you’ll definitely want to think about your bed’s motion transfer. If a bed doesn’t isolate motion well, you’re likely to notice your partner’s movements when they switch sleeping positions during the night.

Unfortunately, due to the springy coils, neither mattress isolates motion well. When we tested them, we felt a significant amount of motion transferring to the opposite side of the bed.

Edge Support

Fortunately, both mattresses have great edge support. This is also great news for couples, because that means partners can rest near the side of the bed without rolling off. Whether you’re relaxing on the Avocado or Birch, you’ll be able to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress.

Durability

Most latex mattresses last about 10 years, and we expect the Avocado and Birch to have that same lifespan.

Off-Gassing

When you unbox a new mattress, it’s common to notice a slight chemical smell at first. We call this off-gassing, but it’s nothing to worry about.

Because both mattresses contain organic materials, their off-gassing smell isn’t super strong. You may notice a slight earthy smell at first, but it should fade away after 48 hours.

Noise

Even though both mattresses contain springs, they were completely silent during our tests. As time goes on, however, it’s possible that both of these beds could start to squeak.

Company Policies

You don’t want to forget about the fine print! We’ve outlined the Avocado and Birch company policies below.

Warranty Info

The Avocado Eco Organic mattress is backed by a 10-year warranty, and the Birch has a 25-year warranty.

Sleep Trial

Both mattresses have a 100-night sleep trial period.

Return Policy

If you’re unhappy with your purchase during the sleep trial period, you can return the mattress for a full refund.

FAQs

Still have questions about these two organic mattresses? Not to worry – we are always here to help.

Which mattress is better, Avocado Eco Organic or Birch?

Ultimately, it boils down to what you need from a mattress. Stomach sleepers will love the Avocado mattress because it’s especially firm and it’s sold at a great price. But if you’re a combination back and stomach sleeper, Birch is the better pick.

How long will the Avocado and Birch mattresses last?

Both mattresses should last about 10 years, which is typically for most latex hybrid mattresses.

Can you flip the Avocado Eco Organic or Birch mattress?

No, these are not flippable beds. They have coils at the bottom and latex foam on top. If you flipped it, the bed wouldn’t feel supportive or comfy.
