Firmness and Feel Differences
To begin understanding how these beds compare and contrast, let’s take a look at their firmness and feel. How Firm Are the Amerisleep and Tuft & Needle Mattresses?
We ranked both the Amerisleep AS3 and the Tuft & Needle around 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests both beds are right around medium-firm. They both balance softer foam layers with firmer, high-density foams. Of course, firmness can be slightly subjective. Based on your body weight and personal preferences, you might rank one or both of these beds as a bit firmer or softer.Sleeping on the Amerisleep and Tuft & Needle Mattresses
We personally tested each of these mattresses in all sleep positions. Here’s how we felt while sleeping on each bed.Amerisleep
We felt great while back sleeping on the Amerisleep AS3. We enjoyed a pleasant balance of comfort and spinal support. We felt decent, though not phenomenal, while side sleeping on the AS3. Those who need the best mattress for side sleepers will probably want to consider the softer AS4 or AS5, which will offer more pressure relief. The Amerisleep AS3 proved a bit too soft for stomach sleeping. People who spend all night in this position should consider the firmer AS1 or AS2, which are more supportive than the AS3.Tuft & Needle
While back sleeping on the Tuft & Needle, our hips sank a bit too far into the mattress and pulled the spine out of alignment. Back sleepers will probably prefer the Amerisleep AS3 or another mattress for back sleepers. We enjoyed nice pressure relief while side sleeping on this mattress. We didn’t experience significant pressure around the shoulder or hip, which are common hot spots for side sleepers. The Tuft & Needle proved too soft for stomach sleeping. Our hips bowed into the mattress and tugged the spine out of alignment. What Do the Amerisleep and Tuft & Needle Mattresses Feel Like?
The Amerisleep AS3 has memory foam in its top layers, so it features a bit of the slow-moving feel that’s commonly associated with memory foam. At the same, it’s more responsive than a lot of memory foam beds. Sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck in this mattress, and it’s pretty easy to move around. The Tuft & Needle has a balanced foam feel that combines some body contouring with a bit of responsiveness. As with the Amerisleep, sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck in this bed.Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Average-weight back sleepers should enjoy a bit of pressure relief and good lumbar support on the Amerisleep AS3. Average-weight side sleepers could obtain nice pressure relief, though folks who prefer a plusher mattress might want to consider the Amerisleep AS4 or AS5. The Amerisleep AS3 is too soft for average-weight stomach sleepers. The Tuft & Needle should be supportive enough for average-weight back sleepers. It offers great pressure relief for average-weight side sleepers. Stomach sleepers who weigh close to 130 pounds might obtain enough spinal support on this mattress; folks who weigh more than that will require a mattress for stomach sleeping.Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Heavyweight back sleepers probably won’t get enough support on the Amerisleep AS3 and will want to consider the firmer AS1, AS2, or another mattress made for heavy people. Heavyweight side sleepers will probably prefer the plusher Amerisleep AS5, which will offer extra pressure relief. The Amerisleep AS3 is not supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers. The Tuft & Needle is not supportive enough for heavyweight back and stomach sleepers. It could possibly be a fit for heavyweight side sleepers.Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
The Amerisleep AS3 should be a good option for lightweight back and side sleepers. It might provide adequate support for lightweight stomach sleepers, but folks who prefer an extra-supportive bed might want to consider the firmer AS2. Much like the Amerisleep, the Tuft & Needle should be a good option for lightweight back and side sleepers. It might even offer enough support for lightweight stomach sleepers.Mattress Construction Differences
Now that you know what it feels like to lie on top of the Amerisleep and the Tuft & Needle mattresses, let’s peel back the cover on these beds to see what’s inside! We’ll assess each layer of these beds’ constructions and share how their materials affect feel and performance. To see how they stack up against other brands, check out the Amerisleep mattress comparisons and Tuft & Needle comparisons.Cover
The Amerisleep AS3 features a soft and breathable cover that allows air to flow through the surface of the mattress. The Tuft & Needle’s cover is thin, soft, and breathable.Comfort Layers
The Amerisleep AS3’s top comfort layer is made from Bio-Pur foam, an open-celled foam that’s designed to be more breathable and bouncier than standard memory foam. Depending on the model you choose, this layer will be thinner or thicker. (The AS1 has the thinnest layer of Bio-Pur foam, the AS5 has the thickest, and the AS3 is right in the middle.) Underneath the Bio-Pur foam, there’s a HIVE transition layer with a zoned construction that makes the mattress firmer in certain areas (for extra support) and softer in others (for added pressure relief). Note that the AS1 does not include this transition layer. The Tuft & Needle’s comfort layer is made from 3” of Adaptive foam, which is simultaneously soft and responsive. This foam is infused with graphite and ceramic gel, both of which help with cooling.Support Layers
The Amerisleep AS3’s support layer is made from a Bio-Core base layer that is high-density and supportive. The Tuft & Needle’s support layer is also made from a supportive base foam. This foam is open-celled to enhance breathability throughout the mattress.Mattress Height
The Amerisleep AS3 is 12” tall, while the Tuft & Needle is a bit shorter at 10”.Amerisleep vs. Tuft & Needle Mattress Size Options and Price

Amerisleep vs. Tuft & Needle Performance Differences
We ran the Amerisleep and the Tuft & Needle through the gamut of tests to see how they perform when it comes to temperature regulation, edge support, durability, motion transfer, and more. Let’s pit these two mattresses head to head!Sleeping Hot or Cold
We called this category a tie. Both of these mattresses are made with breathable foams to support airflow. That said, because they’re both all-foam mattresses, they might still trap some heat. If you sleep hot, make sure to check out our best cooling mattresses.Motion Transfer
The Tuft & Needle ekes out a win in this category. The soft Adaptive foam does a good job of absorbing motion and minimizing disturbances across the surface of the mattress.Edge Support
The Amerisleep takes the win here. We felt more secure while sitting and lying down near the edges of this mattress.Durability
The Amerisleep wins this category by just a bit. It’s a more substantial mattress than the Tuft & Needle, and it’s liable to last longer. Check out the best mattresses that won’t sag for some other durable options.Off-Gassing
We observed some initial off-gassing from both of these mattresses. This should dissipate within a few days.Noise
We didn’t observe any notable noise while moving around on the Amerisleep and the Tuft & Needle. Because these are both all-foam mattresses, it’s unlikely that they’ll become noisy over time.Sex
Both of these mattresses could be a decent (though not spectacular) match here. Sexual partners shouldn’t feel stuck in either bed, and it should be fairly easy to change positions.Company Polices
If you choose to purchase the Amerisleep or the Tuft & Needle, here’s a quick peek at the company policies that you can expect.Warranty Info
The Amerisleep AS3 comes with a 20-year warranty. The Tuft & Needle comes with a shorter 10-year warranty.Sleep Trial
