- Both beds come with good customer service terms.
- The mattresses feature similar base layers in the form of high-density foams.
- These are both more responsive mattresses.
- Both beds boast features to help them sleep cool.
Amerisleep vs. GhostBed: Key Differences
While these beds have a lot in common, they’re still very distinct mattresses. Here’s a quick look at how they differ.- The Amerisleep line gives you five firmness options to choose from, while the GhostBed comes in one firmness.
- The Amerisleep AS3 is slightly thicker than the GhostBed.
- The mattresses use different materials in their comfort layers; the GhostBed features latex, while the Amerisleep does not.
- The Amerisleep AS3 has zoning, while the GhostBed is not zoned.
- The GhostBed is firmer than the Amerisleep AS3 mattress.
- The GhostBed costs less than the Amerisleep AS3 mattress.
Firmness and Feel Differences
Firmness and feel are two of the most important factors to consider whenever you’re mattress hunting. These elements will tell you a lot about whether a bed is a sound match for your sleep position(s) and other preferences. So let’s take a look at the firmness and feel on both the Amerisleep AS3 and the GhostBed!How Firm Are the Amerisleep and GhostBed Mattresses?
We ranked the Amerisleep AS3 around a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and we ranked the GhostBed around 8/10. The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests the Amerisleep AS3 is right around medium-firm while the GhostBed is significantly firmer-than-average. This makes sense when you consider these beds’ constructions: The Amerisleep AS3 is constructed with softer Bio-Pur foam, while the GhostBed uses firmer and more responsive foams like synthetic latex. Of course, firmness is always a bit subjective. Depending on your body weight and personal preferences, you could rank these beds a bit firmer or softer than our assessment.Sleeping on the Amerisleep and GhostBed Mattresses
We personally tested out each of these mattresses. Here’s how we felt in different positions.Amerisleep
We felt great while back sleeping on the Amerisleep AS3. We enjoyed a pleasant balance of comfort and spinal support. We felt decent while side sleeping on the Amerisleep AS3, although heavier folks and people who spend all night in this position will probably crave a mattress that offers even more pressure relief. In that case, consider the plusher Amerisleep AS4 or Amerisleep AS5. We found the Amerisleep AS3 to be too soft for stomach sleeping. Our hips bowed into the mattress a bit too far and pulled the spine out of alignment. Stomach sleepers will probably want to consider the firmer Amerisleep AS1 or AS2 (or another mattress for stomach sleeping).GhostBed
We felt well-supported while back sleeping on the GhostBed, although it might feel too firm for lighter people. Because this mattress is quite firm, it doesn’t offer much pressure relief around the hips. The GhostBed felt decidedly too firm for side sleeping. We experienced some uncomfortable pressure around the shoulder and hip. We felt well supported while stomach sleeping on the GhostBed. Its firm construction helps keep the hips elevated and aligned with the spine. What Do the Amerisleep and GhostBed Mattresses Feel Like?
The Amerisleep utilizes memory foam, and it has a bit of the slow-moving feel that’s often associated with this material. At the same time, it’s more responsive than many memory foam beds, so you shouldn’t feel stuck in this mattress. It’s not as bouncy as, say, latex, but it still makes it pretty easy to move around. The GhostBed also has a fairly balanced feel, but it’s bouncier than the Amerisleep. Thanks to its use of latex, the top of the mattress feels especially responsive.Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Average-weight back sleepers should enjoy a blend of comfort and support (as well as particularly good lumbar support) on the Amerisleep AS3. Average-weight side sleepers should enjoy adequate pressure relief on this mattress, while folks who prefer a plusher feel might want to consider the Amerisleep AS4 or AS5. The Amerisleep AS3 is not supportive enough for average-weight stomach sleepers. The GhostBed offers plenty of spinal support to average-weight back sleepers, although some folks might find that the mattress feels too firm in this position. The GhostBed is decidedly too firm for average-weight side sleepers. It’s much better suited to average-weight stomach sleepers, who will enjoy loads of support.Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Heavyweight back sleepers might not get enough spinal support on the Amerisleep AS3 and will probably want to consider the firmer Amerisleep AS1 or AS2 (or a dedicated mattress for heavy people). Heavyweight side sleepers will probably prefer the plusher Amerisleep AS4, which will offer more pressure relief than the AS3. The Amerisleep AS3 is definitely not supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers. Back sleepers who weigh less than 300 pounds should enjoy adequate support on the GhostBed, while folks who weigh more than that might need a more supportive mattress. The GhostBed is probably too firm for heavyweight side sleepers. It could be a supportive match for heavyweight stomach sleepers who weigh less than 300 pounds; people who weigh more than that will probably require a more substantial mattress overall.Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
The Amerisleep AS3 should offer a nice balance of comfort and support to both lightweight back sleepers and lightweight side sleepers. It could also be supportive enough for lightweight stomach sleepers, although folks who prefer an extra-supportive feel will want to consider a firmer mattress. The GhostBed is almost certainly too firm for lightweight back and side sleepers. That firmness could be good news for lightweight stomach sleepers, who will obtain plenty of spinal support on this mattress.Mattress Construction Differences
To get to know these beds even better, let’s take a look at their constructions. We’ll pull back the cover on both beds to reveal each layer, with an eye toward how different materials influence feel and performance.Cover
The Amerisleep AS3 comes with a soft and breathable cover that allows air to flow through the surface of the mattress. The GhostBed features a smooth, stretchy cover that’s made with a durable blend of polyester and viscose.Comfort Layers
The Amerisleep AS3’s top comfort layer is made from Bio-Pur foam, a proprietary type of memory foam that’s open-celled and designed to be more breathable and bouncier than conventional memory foam. (Each Amerisleep model has a different thickness of Bio-Pur foam; the AS1 has the least, while the plushest AS5 has the most. The AS3 is right in the middle.) Underneath the Bio-Pur foam, there’s a HIVE Transition layer with a zoned construction that makes the mattress firmer in some areas (for extra support) and softer in others (for added pressure relief). Note that the AS1 does not contain this layer. The GhostBed’s main comfort layer consists of 1.5” of Aerated Latex foam, a synthetic latex foam that’s ventilated to allow for airflow. Below that, there’s 2” of gel memory foam that’s designed to be more breathable than conventional memory foam.Support Layers
The Amerisleep AS3’s support layer is made from a Bio-Core base layer of foam that’s high-density and supportive. Similar to the Amerisleep, the support layer on the GhostBed is made from 7.5” of high-density base foam.Mattress Height
The Amerisleep AS3 is 12” tall, while the GhostBed is just a touch shorter at 11”.Amerisleep vs. GhostBed Mattress Size Options and Price

Amerisleep vs. GhostBed Performance Differences
We pitted these mattresses against each other in a range of tests with regard to temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and other performance indicators. Let’s see how they stacked up!Sleeping Hot or Cold
The GhostBed takes the win thanks to its ventilated latex foam layer, which adds significant breathability to the mattress. Latex foam also traps less heat than memory foam. The Amerisleep doesn’t necessarily sleep hot, but the GhostBed should sleep cooler.Motion Transfer
The Amerisleep wins out here. Its memory foam layer does a decent job of absorbing motion and minimizing disturbances across the surface of the bed. Because the GhostBed is bouncier and more responsive than the Amerisleep, it doesn’t perform as well when it comes to minimizing motion transfer.Edge Support
The GhostBed wins this category. Its firmer nature helped us feel more secure while sitting and lying down near its edges. We don’t feel like we are going to roll off the Amerisleep, but the edge of the GhostBed is just more supportive overall.Durability
This category was too close to call. Both mattresses should be fairly durable and last for a good amount of time. They both come with a 20-year warranty.Off-Gassing
We observed a bit of initial off-gassing from both the Amerisleep and the GhostBed. This should dissipate within a few days.Noise
We didn’t observe any notable noise while moving around on the Amerisleep and the GhostBed. Because these are both all-foam beds, they should stay noise-free over the long haul.Sex
When people seek out a mattress for sex, they’re usually concerned with whether it will be easy to change positions. Because the Amerisleep and the GhostBed are both fairly responsive, either mattress should be a decent match. Sexual partners shouldn’t feel stuck in either of these beds. Note that the GhostBed is more responsive, however.Company Policies
Thinking about purchasing the Amerisleep or the GhostBed? Here’s a look at the company policies you can expect.Warranty Info
