Amerisleep AS1 Mattress Overview
The Amerisleep AS1 mattress is an all-foam mattress with just two layers. Like the other Amerisleep mattresses, it features a proprietary Bio-Pur foam that is designed to be comfortable, responsive, and breathable. This rests atop the same Bio-Core foam found in the other Amerisleep mattresses.
Because you only get a thin layer of this Bio-Core on top of the mattress, it is a firmer mattress and feels more supportive than the other Amerisleep mattresses. Keeping that in mind, it is a better fit for certain types of sleepers:
Who Might Like The Amerisleep AS1?
- Back sleepers who need a more supportive mattress
- Stomach sleepers who require excellent overall support
- Fans of firm mattresses with less give
Who Might Not Like The Amerisleep AS1?
- Side sleepers who need pressure relief for their shoulders and hips
- Those who prefer a mattress with a slow-moving memory foam feel
- Sleepers who want a softer mattress with more give

Amerisleep AS1 Mattress Firmness And Feel
When I review a mattress, I usually start by looking at its firmness and feel. These are two of the major things you should consider when shopping for a mattress, so let’s see if the Amerisleep AS1 will be a good match.
How Firm Is The Amerisleep AS1 Mattress?
In our experience, the Amerisleep AS1 is firmer-than-average and scores an 8/10 on our firmness scale. With only a thin layer of Bio-Pur foam on top, we are mostly feeling the firm support of the Bio-Core foam in the base layer.
Sleeping On The Amerisleep AS1 Mattress
While the Amerisleep AS1 is a firmer mattress, we found it to be a decent match for back sleeping. Our hips go right through the top Bio-Fur layer and even press into the base layer beneath. As we will discuss below, this experience might be different if you are a lightweight back sleeper.
Side sleeping, the Amerisleep is much too firm for us, and we are feeling some significant pressure and bunching up around our shoulders and hips. This is unsurprising as the AS1 isn’t made with side sleepers in mind, and you can look at the Amerisleep AS4 or AS5 if you do sleep on your side.
When we are stomach sleeping on the Amerisleep AS1, the mattress really shines. The mattress prevents our hips from sinking too far into the mattress, and we feel nice even support across the rest of our bodies.
What Does The Amerisleep AS1 Mattress Feel Like?
Overall, the Amerisleep AS1 has more of a balanced foam feel. The Bio-Pur foam is soft and allows you to sink in a bit, but it is bouncy and responsive as well. It will make it very easy for you to move around on the Amerisleep AS1 mattress.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 130 lbs
Average weight back sleepers who are close to 130 lbs might think the Amerisleep AS1 is too firm for them. Their hips won’t sink in far enough, and they could feel like they are being pushed out of the mattress. However, back sleepers who are closer to 230 lbs might press further into the mattress, and they might get the balance of comfort and support they require.
Side sleeping, average weight people will most likely feel too much pressure on their shoulders and hips, and they will want to opt for one of the softer Amerisleep mattresses.
Stomach sleeping, the majority of average weight people will get all the support they need. They should get great overall support, and their hips should dip down into the mattress.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
Many larger back sleepers might feel like the AS1 is supportive enough for them, but if they are over 300 lbs, they will want to look for a mattress with coils or more supportive materials.
Side sleeping, heavyweight people will also feel too much pressure on their shoulders and hips; they will want a softer mattress with a much thicker comfort layer to provide them with enough pressure relief.
Stomach sleeping, those who are close to 230 lbs should get enough support but, if they are much heavier, they will need a more supportive mattress overall.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
Lighter people will probably feel like the Amerisleep is too firm for back sleeping – they should consider the Amerisleep AS3 if they want the best mattress for back sleeping.
Like their heavyweight and average weight counterparts, lightweight side sleepers should find the Amerisleep AS1 to be too firm for side sleeping. They should take a look at the Amerisleep AS3 or AS4, which will give them the proper amount of pressure relief.
Stomach sleeping, average weight people will get all the support they require from the Amerisleep AS1; the mattress will feel very firm to them, but that is great for stomach sleeping!

Amerisleep AS1 Mattress Construction
Now, I’d like to show you exactly what is found inside the Amerisleep AS1 mattress. We will unzip the cover and discuss each layer one by one.
Cover
The Amerisleep AS1 features a Refresh Cooling Cover that feels cool to the touch. It’s made with technology that converts body heat into far infrared energy, which helps improve circulation to aid in athletic recovery and improve sleep.
Comfort Layer
Unlike the other Amerisleep mattresses, the AS1 only features one comfort layer – 2″ of Bio-Pur foam. As I mentioned above, this material is proprietary to Amerisleep and is designed to be more breathable and responsive than memory foam. It is also plant-based, making it more eco-friendly than some other types of mattress foam.
Support Layer
The AS1’s support layer contains 8″ of Bio-Core foam that is firm and durable; it is also proprietary to Amerisleep and is designed to prevent sagging in the mattress for many years.
Mattress Height
The Amerisleep AS1 mattress is 10″ tall.

Amerisleep AS1 Mattress Performance
Besides firmness, feel, and construction, there are some other features to consider when shopping for a mattress. We ran the Amerisleep AS1 through numerous tests to see just how it performs with regard to cooling, motion transfer, and edge support.
Sleeping Hot Or Cold
For an all-foam mattress, the Amerisleep AS1 should not sleep extremely hot because its cooling cover and breathable foam should keep air moving through the top of the mattress. That being said, if you have real trouble sleeping hot, you might want to consider one of the Amerisleep hybrid models.
Motion Transfer
The Amerisleep AS1 mattress handles motion transfer surprisingly well – we are not seeing too much motion transfer from one side of the mattress to the other. It should be a good mattress for couples as sleeping partners shouldn’t disturb one another when they move around at night.
Edge Support
The Amerisleep AS1 features some excellent edge support, and I feel very secure when I sit and lie down near the edge. This should also make the mattress attractive to couples as it allows two sleepers to use as much of the mattress as possible.
Durability
Looking at the overall design and construction of the Amerisleep AS1, it looks like quite the durable mattress. The proprietary foams are high-density, and we don’t expect them to sag quickly.
Off-gassing
The Amerisleep AS1 is a bed in a box mattress so, yes, there was some initial off-gassing when we unboxed it. Don’t worry, this is normal for an online mattress, and the chemical smell will go away after 48 hours.
Noise
We did not notice any significant noise when we moved and rolled around on the Amerisleep AS1 mattress.
Sex
The Amerisleep AS1 could be a good mattress for sex because it is firm and responsive; you and your partner should have no trouble moving around on the mattress.
Amerisleep Company Policies
If you’re having trouble understanding all the fine print policies for the AS1, don’t fret. We’ll break down all the most important policies below.
Warranty
The AS1 mattress comes with a 20-year limited warranty. If your mattress has any manufacturing defects (think tears in the cover or premature indentation even with proper care and maintenance) then Amerisleep will repair or replace your mattress.
Mattress warranties can be kind of tricky, but you can learn more about them by reading our guide on how to understand your mattress warranty.
Sleep Trial
The AS1 mattress also comes with a 100-night sleep trial period. This allows you to test out sleeping on your AS1 mattress for 100-nights risk-free!
Return Policy
If you decide during your trial period that the AS1 isn’t a good fit for you, simply contact Amerisleep to start the return process. It’s super simple, and you will receive a full refund!
Amerisleep does ask that you give the mattress a chance for at least 30 days before initiating a return just so you allow enough time to truly break in the mattress and adjust to it.
How Does The Amerisleep AS1 Compare To Other Mattresses?
Finding the best bed-in-a-box mattress for your needs can get challenging. If you’re in the mattress comparison phase of shopping, we can help you out!
First, you can read our brief AS1 vs AS2 comparison down below. The AS2 is a similar mattress offered from Amerisleep that many shoppers want to compare to the AS1. If you want to compare the AS1 to more mattresses, you can check out our Amerisleep mattress comparisons.
Amerisleep AS1 vs AS2
As mentioned, the AS2 is another mattress offered by Amerisleep that many people are interested in comparing to the AS1. Amerisleep has a line of five memory foam mattresses that vary in firmness going from the AS1 (the firmest) to the AS5 (the softest). The AS1 and AS2 are the firmest mattresses in this line, though the AS1 is slightly more firm than the AS2.
The construction of these two mattresses is fairly different. The AS1 only features two main layers: a 2” layer of Bio-Pur foam and an 8” base layer of Bio-Core foam. The AS2, however, features an additional 3-inch HIVE transition layer of foam that adds a bit more contouring and pressure relief to the mattress.
This means, the AS1 is going to be a more firm mattress that’s a better fit for stomach and back sleepers, but the AS2 will offer more comfort to side sleepers who need a bit of contouring around the shoulders and hips. The AS2 is also known to be a great match for people with back pain relief.
If you’re looking to go for the most affordable option, we will note that the AS1 is considerably cheaper than the AS2 mattress.
Who Should Get The Amerisleep AS1?

Who Should Get The Amerisleep AS2?
- People who need back pain relief
- People who want a firm mattress with a little bit of contour and pressure relief
