Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper Firmness & Feel

Toppers are designed to change the firmness and feel of your mattress. The Puffy Deluxe mattress topper comes in two firmness levels: soft and firm. I tested the firm version of this topper, so let’s go over how it’ll change the way your current mattress feels.

What’s the Puffy Deluxe Topper’s Firmness?

Here at Mattress Clarity, we give mattresses an overall firmness rating on a scale from 1-10, with 6.5/10 being the standard for medium-firm. When it comes to mattress toppers, I assess how the topper changes a mattress’s firmness level.

A hand presses into the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper to show off its feeling.

The firm version of the Puffy Deluxe topper impressed me with how firm it felt. I would say that this topper can firm up a mattress by about 1 to 1.5 points. I tested this topper on the Nest Sparrow mattress, which is a classic medium-firm mattress, or 6.5/10 on our scale.

The Puffy Deluxe topper added a good deal of firmness to this mattress, making it feel closer to a 7.5/10. So, if you’re dealing with a mattress that feels too soft, this version of the Puffy topper is a great choice to consider.

What Does the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper Feel Like?

Though the Puffy topper is made with memory foam, it does feel quite firm and dense. It doesn’t offer the same body contouring that softer memory foam is known for. The topper’s firm feel also allows for easy movement. You won’t really sink into this topper and feel trapped. Combination sleepers should have no problem moving around.

Sleeping on the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper

As I mentioned above, I tested this topper on the Nest Sparrow mattress. This bed has a pillow top look and feel, so when I put the Puffy Deluxe around it, I noticed some pockets of space between the topper and the mattress. That said, this topper should fit more securely on all-foam mattresses.

I’ve found that some firm mattress toppers still can feel soft, but when I rested on top of the Puffy Deluxe mattress topper, the feeling was actually quite firm.

A man sleeps on his back while on top of the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper.

I started my testing on my back, and I felt most comfortable in this position. The foam did a great job handling my weight, and I’m a heavy guy as well. I felt some good support in my lower back here.

When I switched to my side, I noticed some pressure in my shoulder. This wasn’t too surprising after feeling how firm the topper was on my back. So I didn’t spend a lot of time on my side here. But shifting to my stomach, I also felt quite comfortable. Stomach sleepers usually need firmer mattresses to keep their hips elevated. If you’re dealing with a mattress that’s too soft and you’re a stomach sleeper, the firm version of this topper is a good choice.

30-60 Min Nap with the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper

Though I’m a natural side sleeper, I knew that wasn’t going to be comfortable when it came time to actually sleep on the Puffy Deluxe topper. So for a quick nap, I opted for my stomach. As I mentioned above, this topper is quite firm, so I didn’t find much, if any, strain on my lower back while I rested.

I also tend to sleep hot. After my body temperature evened out (I’m always hottest when I first climb into bed), I didn’t really notice any hot spots develop on this topper. This was a welcome surprise because the only cooling feature this topper has is a breathable cover made with bamboo and polyester.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight back and stomach sleepers should feel excellent support on the firm version of the topper. It offers just enough comfort for back sleepers and enough hip support for stomach sleepers. If you’re a side sleeper, I’d recommend going for the soft version of this topper because it offers more pressure relief.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Similarly to average weight sleepers, I think heavyweight back sleepers should find both comfort and support on the Puffy Deluxe firm topper, especially if their current mattress is too soft. Most heavyweight stomach sleepers should find good support on this topper as well.

Heavyweight side sleepers should opt for the soft version. But considering that the soft version is only 2.5” tall, heavyweight side sleepers may want a thicker mattress topper altogether.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lb

Both versions of the Puffy Deluxe mattress topper should work well for most lightweight sleepers. Lightweight stomach sleepers will be able to keep their hips elevated and supported. Back sleepers could go either way with the firm or soft version depending on theirneeds. Side sleepers should still opt for the soft version because it helps cushion shoulders and hips.

Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper Construction

Let’s take a look at the materials that go into the Puffy Deluxe mattress topper.

Cover

The Puffy Deluxe topper comes with an outer, removable cover. The topmost part of this cover is made with bamboo viscose, which feels soft and smooth. It’s also quite breathable and moisture-wicking.

A hand pulls back the cover of the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper.

This cover’s design is that of a fitted sheet, so the topper will fit securely on your mattress. On the underside of the main portion of the topper, there are silicone nubs to help prevent it from shifting. The cover has pockets that are 15” deep, so it can accommodate most average height mattresses (around 10” – 14” tall).

The bottom portion of the cover is made from polyester and has a slight stretch to it. And as one added measure to combat shifting, the elastic band has an anti-slip grip.

Comfort Layer

The main comfort layer in the Puffy Deluxe topper memory foam. The feeling of the foam will change depending on the firmness level you choose. I noticed that in my firm topper, there were two layers to the foam.

The top layer was thin, but soft foam to provide some cushioning. The rest of the foam was thicker and much denser, giving the topper its firm feeling.

Topper Height

No matter which firmness you choose, the Puffy Deluxe mattress topper is 2.5” tall.

Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper Performance

Now that we know what goes into the Puffy topper and how it feels for different sleeping positions, let’s discuss a few more key performance factors.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The foam in the Puffy Deluxe mattress topper doesn’t feature any cooling innovations. It’s not ventilated for extra airflow or infused with cooling gel. The only thing it really has to combat overheating is the bamboo viscose in the top portion of the outer cover.

Having said that, I didn’t feel any hot spots during my testing. I am a textbook hot sleeper, so this was good news to me. The firm model may feel cooler because it lacks a slow-moving feel. You won’t “sink into” the foam and trap body heat around you. However, the soft model may have more of a slow-moving feel, so it could feel hotter.

Durability

Though Puffy offers a lifetime warranty on the Deluxe topper, I can’t say that it’ll last forever. With regular upkeep and care, this topper should last two or three years.

Off-Gassing

The Puffy Deluxe mattress topper is compressed into a cardboard box for shipping. The firm version I got was ready to go fairly quickly after opening it. However, you may notice a slight chemical smell, which is just a result of the packaging process. I recommend letting the topper air out for about 24 hours before first use.

I also noticed that the topper was folded into thirds, so along the length of the topper, there were two prominent creases. These creases shouldn’t be noticeable while you sleep, but visually they were still there 48 hours after unboxing.

Cleaning

The Puffy Deluxe mattress topper has a removable outer cover that can be machine-washed. Puffy doesn’t offer any specific cleaning instructions on its website, but generally you’ll want to wash this cover in cold water with a mild detergent and on a gentle cycle.

I would recommend letting this cover air dry, or tumble dry it on low heat.

Allergens

Puffy mentioned that this topper is hypoallergenic. This is because of the presence of bamboo viscose, which is a naturally hypoallergenic material. This topper shouldn’t attract or trap allergens in your sleep environment.

Company Policies

Let’s take a look at some of Puffy’s company policies:

Warranty

Puffy offers a lifetime warranty on the Puffy Deluxe mattress topper. This warranty only applies to faulty workmanship or materials. It will not cover general wear and tear or any intentional damage to the topper.

Sleep Trial

From the day your Puffy Deluxe mattress topper arrives, you’ll have 101 days to test it out and make return or exchange decisions.

Return Policy

If, during that 101-night trial period you decide that the topper is not for you, you can issue a return or an exchange for a different model. Shipping is free on all orders, and Puffy also covers the shipping costs for returns.

How Does the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper Compare to Other Toppers?

Before clicking “check out,” it’s always a good idea to have your options open. Let’s compare the Puffy Deluxe mattress topper to a responsive latex topper and a slow-moving memory foam topper.

Puffy vs Plushbeds

Puffy offers its mattress topper in two firmness options, but Plushbeds has a grand total of five firmnesses to choose from. For this comparison  let’s focus on the PlushBeds medium topper and the Puffy Deluxe firm topper.

An image of the corner of the Plushbeds Latex topper, with the cover pulled back to reveal the perforated latex foam.

The Plushbeds latex mattress topper is just that: made out of latex. Latex is great for people who want something springy and responsive while still getting some good pressure relief. This makes the Plushbeds topper more suitable for side sleepers who need to soften a mattress.

The Puffy Deluxe topper has a classic memory foam feel. Thanks to its firm feel, It offers plenty of support for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers may feel some pressure along their shoulders and hips on the firm model.

Puffy vs TEMPUR-Pedic

One brand that is synonymous with memory foam is TEMPUR-Pedic. If you want to add that classic, slow-moving memory foam feel to your mattress, the TEMPUR-Adapt topper is a good choice. This topper doesn’t have firmness options and is intended to soften your mattress, unlike the firm Puffy Deluxe topper.

tempur topper side sleeping

Side sleepers will be able to get plenty of pressure relief and body contouring on the TEMPUR-Adapt topper. Some back sleepers who need a softer mattress will enjoy this as well. But strict stomach sleepers should consider getting the firm Puffy Deluxe topper. Otherwise, their hips could sink out of alignment and they could develop lower back pain.

For my fellow hot sleepers out there, I recommend going with the Puffy topper due to the breathable bamboo viscose cover. And because you won’t sink into this topper too much, it won’t absorb your body heat. You can purchase a cooling cover for the TEMPUR-Adapt topper, but that comes with an additional fee.

Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper FAQs

Is the Puffy Deluxe mattress topper made of memory foam?

Yes! The comfort layer of this mattress topper is made from two layers of memory foam. It comes in either a firm or soft firmness option.

How long does it take a Puffy mattress topper to expand?

About an hour to two hours. I tested the firm model, which fully expanded in about 45 minutes. The soft version may take longer. It’s best to let toppers off-gas in a well ventilated area for about 24 hours if you notice a chemical smell. But don’t worry too much about the smell, it’s only a result of the packaging process.

What if I don’t like my Puffy Deluxe mattress topper?

You can issue a return or an exchange during the 101-night trial period. Puffy will offer a full refund and cover the cost of return shipping.
