Idle Gel Plush Mattress Firmness and Feel

We always investigate the firmness and feel of each mattress we review. That way, sleepers can learn whether it’s the right fit for them.

How Firm is the Idle Plush?

The Idle Sleep Gel Plush scored a 6/10 on our firmness scale, which is slightly softer than most medium-firm mattresses. The first comfort layer consists of 1’’ of cooling memory foam, which provides a plush top we can sink into. Beneath that sits 2’’ of gel foam, a comfortable material that provides excellent pressure relief and support.

Sleeping On The Idle Plush

While back sleeping on the Idle Plush, we noticed the bed offers great body contouring. We can really feel the bed cushioning our limbs while lying in it. Because of its lumbar support, the Idle Gel Plush is a solid option for back sleepers.

Idle Plush - Back Sleeping

The Idle Plush is a fantastic option for side sleepers. The comfort layers include 2’’ of gel buoyancy foam and 3’’ of Idle memory foam, which provides excellent pressure relief. When relaxing on our side, we felt almost no pressure on our shoulders and hips. Overall, the Idle Plush is a great option for combination sleepers who alternate between their backs and sides.

Although it’s excellent for side sleeping, The Idle Plush is not a great option for stomach sleepers. The thick comfort layers do not provide enough support for our hips and lower back, which keeps our bodies out of alignment. If you tend to sleep on your stomach, you may prefer a firm mattress. Make sure to check out our list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

What Does the Idle Plush Feel Like?

The Idle Plush has a slow-moving memory foam feel. Although Idle Sleep describes this mattress as responsive, we feel ourselves sinking into the comfort layers. Overall, this bed in a box feels like a traditional memory foam mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs

Unless they are closer to 230lbs, average weight sleepers should feel very comfortable sleeping on their backs. The Idle Gel Plush does a great job of contouring the body and offers a decent amount of lumbar support.

The Idle Gel Plush is a great option for average weight side sleepers. The thick comfort layers alleviate pain on pressure points, which is exactly what you should look for when shopping for the best mattress for side sleeping.

However, the Idle Gel Plush does not offer enough support for average weight stomach sleepers. The soft comfort layers do not keep our bodies in alignment while snoozing on our stomachs, which could cause pain and discomfort over time.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

Back sleepers who weigh close to 230lbs should feel ample support and comfort on the Idle Plush. Those who weigh significantly more will likely feel this gel foam mattress is too soft and unsupportive. Instead, they should check out one of the best mattresses for heavier people.

For side sleepers who weigh between 230lbs and 300lbs, the Idle Plush should provide enough pressure relief and comfort. People who weigh more than 300lbs could potentially bottom out and feel more pain on their pressure points while side sleeping.

Heavyweight stomach sleepers will not feel enough support on the Idle Gel Plush mattress. Instead, they should look for a firm mattress that can keep their body in alignment.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

Lightweight sleepers should feel comfortable in all three sleeping positions. People who weigh less than 130lbs shouldn’t sink deeply into the support layers, so this foam bed should provide enough pressure relief for lightweight combination sleepers.

Idle Gel Plush Mattress Construction

The Idle Gel Plush is made with high-quality and non-toxic materials. Let’s take a closer look at what you’ll find inside each layer of this foam bed.

Cover

On the outside of the foam mattress, you’ll find Idle Sleep’s washable cover. This replaceable zip cover makes it easy to keep the gel foam mattress clean. It also contains proprietary Ice Fabric. With gel sewn into the surface, this cover feels cool to the touch. The fabric also contains cooling buoyancy foam, which creates a plush feel that won’t overheat.

Comfort Layers

The Idle Plush features two thick comfort layers designed to keep sleepers cool and comfortable during the night. Beneath the Ice Fabric Cover sits 2’’ of gel-infused buoyancy foam. This slow-moving layer is great for people looking for a traditional memory foam feel.

Idle Gel Plush Construction

Below this layer sits 3’’ of Idle Sleep’s memory foam. Like the gel-infused layer, this memory foam moves slowly and allows your body to sink into the mattress.

Support Layer

Underneath the support layers sits 8’’ of high-density foam. This provides excellent support for the rest of the gel foam mattress and makes it a durable option.

Mattress Height

The Idle Gel Plush foam mattress is 14” tall.

Idle Plush Mattress Performance

Want to know how the Idle Plush foam mattress stacks up in terms of durability and performance? Read on to find out!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

If you occasionally wake up feeling hot in the middle of the night, the Idle Plush is a great option. The Ice Fabric cover is made with gel, and it feels cool to the touch. Beneath this sits 1’’ of Cooling Buoyancy Foam, which helps eliminate heat buildup throughout the night.

Motion Transfer

Couples purchasing a new mattress may want to look into its motion transfer. That way, they aren’t likely to wake up when their partner moves around during the night. Fortunately, we found the Idle Plush has great motion isolation. Because of the slow-moving memory foam, you’re not likely to feel your partner if they change sleep positions.

Edge Support

The Idle Plush foam mattress isn’t the best in terms of edge support. We notice the sides collapsing when sitting on the side of the foam mattress, and we almost roll off when lying down.

Idle Plush - edge support

Durability

Because this is a luxury foam mattress, the Idle Plush should last for at least 7-10 years. The thick memory foam layers are made with high-quality materials, making it a great option in terms of durability.

Off-Gassing

After opening a new mattress in a box, it’s common to notice a slight smell. We call this “off-gassing,” and it was present with the Idle Plush. Like most new mattresses, however, the odor dissipated after 48 hours.

Noise

If you’re concerned about noise, you’ll be happy to know that the Idle Plush doesn’t make a sound.

Sex

Because it’s made with slow-moving memory foam, the Idle Plush may not be the best mattress for sex. It could make couples feel stuck while moving around on top of it.

Our Idle Gel Plush Mattress Ratings

Make sure to take a look at the final tally for the Idle Gel Plush mattress:

Company Policies

Let’s look closer at Idle Sleep’s fine print. Below, you’ll find more information about their lifetime warranty, trial period, and return policy.

Warranty Info

All Idle Sleep mattresses feature a lifetime warranty.

Sleep Trial

The Idle Gel Plush mattress has an 18-month sleep trial, which is significantly longer than what most mattress brands offer.

Return Policy

During the sleep trial period, Idle Sleep offers free returns. If you realize you aren’t satisfied with the mattress after the first 30 days, Idle Sleep will pick up the bed for free.

Idle Plush Mattress Complaints

Most customer complaints about Idle Sleep revolve around shipping delays. Oftentimes, Idle Sleep’s gel foam mattresses are built from scratch, causing longer wait times for consumers. When these issues arise, Idle Sleep responds to each customer and works to solve the problem.

Besides customer service-related concerns, Idle Sleep occasionally receives complaints from those who need a more supportive foam mattress. Stomach sleepers, especially, will feel the bed’s firmness level isn’t enough to provide adequate pressure relief. People who like sleeping on top of a mattress won’t like Idle Sleep’s memory foam feel and may prefer a traditional innerspring mattress.

How Does The Idle Plush Compare To Other Mattresses?

Before buying a new mattress, it can be helpful to learn more about similar products. Let’s take a closer look at how the Idle Gel Plush compares with other Idle Sleep mattresses.

If you want to learn more about another brand, check out our mattress reviews page.

Idle Plush vs. Idle Sleep Hybrid

While both mattresses are made with Idle Sleep’s buoyant foam, there are several differences between the two options. Most notably, the Idle Hybrid has a layer of coils and the Idle Plush does not. Because of this additional layer, the Idle Hybrid has a higher price point. And unlike the Idle Plush, the Idle Hybrid is flippable.

IDLE Sleep Hybrid Mattress - Construction

Generally, the Idle Hybrid feels firmer than the Idle Plush. The Idle Hybrid has three different firmness levels to choose from. Sleepers can purchase a bed that’s completely medium or luxury firm, or they can buy a mattress that is medium-firm on one side and luxury firm on the other.

Who Should Choose The Idle Plush?

  • Side sleepers
  • Those who like a memory foam feel

Who Should Choose The Idle Hybrid?

  • Back and stomach sleepers
  • Larger people
  • Those who want two firmness levels in one
