You’re tired. It’s getting late. You need a new mattress to fall asleep on. But which do you choose? Another mattress comparison should help! Today, we’ll be stacking one of Tuft & Needle’s luxury mattresses, the Mint, against the original Casper mattress—a bed that helped start the bed-in-a-box revolution.

Ready to learn more? Let’s dive into this Tuft & Needle Mint vs. Casper mattress comparison!

Tuft & Needle Mint Vs Casper Overview

Tuft & Needle is one of the most popular bed-in-a-box brands, with several different mattresses to choose from. A more luxurious version of the original all-foam Tuft & Needle, the Mint has three comfort layers and boasts features such as advanced edge support and cooling technology.

Like the Mint, the original Casper is an all-foam mattress, and its Zoned Support system has been a popular choice for all different types of sleepers. The memory foam is firmer toward the center and softer at the head and foot of the bed, meaning that you get a lot of variety.

Who Should Get The Mint

  • Those who prefer a uniform feel throughout the bed
  • Back and side sleepers
  • Hot sleepers. The Mint’s cooling technology helps the bed keep a low temperature.
  • Anyone who prefers a softer-than-average mattress. On the Mint, you’ll get that classic memory-foam feeling of sinking softly and slowly unto the bed.

Who Should Get The Casper

  • Back sleepers. Side sleepers will probably enjoy the Casper as well, although it depends a lot on body weight.
  • Stomach sleepers. The Casper has enough support to prevent them from sinking into the mattress.
  • Those who prefer a more balanced foam feel. Although it’s made entirely of foam, the Casper is more responsive than the Mint.
  • Anyone operating within a budget. The Casper is a bit less expensive than the Mint.

And there are certainly some differences between these two beds as well. Let’s go over some of them.

  • The Casper has four layers, where the Mint has a simpler construction of three layers
  • The Casper has a Zoned Support system and the Mint does not. In other words, the Mint is going to have a uniform feel while the Casper has different levels of firmness for different areas of the body.

Firmness and Feel Differences

In the world of mattresses, are there any two factors more important than firmness and feel? We’d argue no. Let’s see how these two beds compare.

How Firm Are The Mint & Casper Mattresses?

Even though the Mint has a fairly firm transition layer and base layer, the Adaptive Foam found in the mattress’ top layer gives it a medium-firm feel. We scored it a 6.5/10 on the firmness scale.

The Casper garnered a Medium Firm score of 7/10, although the Zoned Support is going to make the bed feel firmer or softer depending on sleeping position. The center of the transition layer is firmer than the rest, so the mattress will firmest for back and stomach sleepers and softer for side sleepers.

Sleeping On The Mint And Casper Mattresses

We tested out both beds in every possible sleeping position. Here’s how they all felt.

Sleeping on the Mint felt best on our side, as the Adaptive Foam does a nice job with relieving pressure. Back-sleeping was comfortable as well, although there wasn’t enough support there for stomach-sleeping.

The most comfortable position on the Casper was back-sleeping. The Zoned Support system gave a little extra cushioning to the lumbar region, so much that we ranked the Casper as one of the best mattresses for back sciatica. Side-sleeping was reasonably comfortable as well, if not quite as much as the Mint.

The Casper was also a decent option for stomach-sleeping — firm enough to keep the hips from sinking into the bed. While not the perfect match for stomach sleepers, it should still get the job done.

What Do The Mint And Casper Mattresses Feel Like?

Both beds are all-foam, but as we’ve noted, the Mint is going to give the slower-responding feel that we’ve all come to expect from memory foam. The Casper has a more balanced feel. We wouldn’t quite call it on-top-of-the-bed, but there’s a little more firmness, as well as some nice push and pull from the Zoned Support system.

Average-Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

The Mint has a good amount of support for average-weight back sleepers. The comfort layers allow sleepers’ hips to sink just the right amount while still offering enough support in the lumbar region.

Average-weight side sleepers should feel supported and comfortable as well. The Adaptive Foam works to relieve pressure, and the transition layer keeps sleepers from bottoming out.

Average-weight stomach sleepers may want to look elsewhere, as they’ll probably find the Mint to be too soft. Their hips could sink too far into the bed and throw the body out of its proper alignment.

On the Casper, average-weight sleepers will likely be comfortable in all three positions, which means it’s also one of the best mattresses for combination sleepers. The versatility comes from the Zoned support system.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Since heavier sleepers will sink further into the Mint, they’ll likely feel the layers underneath the Adaptive Foam for a firmer sleeping experience. This means it will probably feel good on their back, although some heavier sleepers might feel their hips sinking a bit too far. The bed might also be a good match for heavier side sleepers, but heavier stomach sleepers will probably need more support. They may want to check out some of our best mattresses for heavy people.

On the Casper, some heavier back sleepers should feel supported enough by the Zoned Support system. But those over 275 lbs will probably want to seek out a hybrid mattress or look at our list of best innerspring mattresses.

Heavier side sleepers may find the Casper too firm, with too much pressure on their shoulders and hips. And as with the Mint, heavier stomach sleepers should see our list of best mattresses for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Because lightweight sleepers don’t need quite as much support, they should feel comfortable in all three positions on both the Mint and the Casper.

Mattress Construction Differences

Now it’s time to put on our hard hats and cut open these beds so we can see what they’re made of.

Cover

The Mint’s cover is knitted and soft, and it’s machine washable!

The Casper’s cover is a bit simpler in design—thin, soft, and nothing to write home about.

Comfort Layers

The Mint has two comfort layers, the first being 3” of Adaptive Foam, which mixes the qualities of memory foam and latex into one substance. It’s meant to be responsive and bouncy, but simultaneously works with the layers underneath for that memory-foam feel. This first comfort layer is also infused with graphite to help keep the bed cool.

Mint Mattress Construction

Next comes a 2” Mint layer. This section is infused with ceramic and cooling gel, which helps keep sleepers cool.

At three comfort layers deep, the Casper’s construction is a little more complex. The top layer contains a proprietary foam called AirScape that’s both soft and responsive. There are also some cooling properties in this 1.5” expanse, thanks to the foam’s open-celled, ventilated structure.

A mattress is opened to show its construction.

The second layer is 1.5” of fast-reacting memory foam, which provides additional pressure relief.

The third and final comfort layer is the Zoned Support system—a memory foam layer that’s firmer in the center and softer at the ends. As we already discussed, this will make the mattress feel firmer or softer depending on sleeping position.

Support Layer

Both the Mint and the Casper conclude with a polyfoam support layer that’s pretty standard for bed-in-a-box mattresses.

Mattress Height

The Tuft & Needle is 11.5” tall and the Casper is just a tiny bit shorter at 11”.

Mint And Casper Performance Differences

As regular visitors to our site can attest, we put all of the beds through a series of performance tests, including temperature regulation, motion transfer, and more. Let’s see how these two particular mattresses performed.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Both of these mattresses sleep cooler than the traditional foam beds. But if we had to choose a winner (and we do!), the Mint’s graphite—coupled with a gel inside the transition layer—has the edge over Casper’s AirScape foam and open-celled design.

Motion Transfer

This one’s a tie. Both the Mint and the Casper have little to no motion transfer, making either one a good option for couples.

Edge Support

Again, both beds do exceptionally well here, especially for foam mattresses. But we have to hand this category to the Mint for its advanced edge support.

Mint Mattress Edge Support

The Mint’s support layer is firmer toward the edge, providing some extra security. But you can’t go wrong with either option. If you roll close to the edge of the bed, you’re likely to feel supported.

Casper Mattress - Edge Support

Durability

Both of these beds are made of sturdy materials that should make for a long-term investment. In fact, they both have a 10-year warranty that guarantees longevity.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is just another word for the faint smell that emerges when opening and unrolling any bed-in-a-box. With both beds, it went away after 48 hours.

Noise

Because both of these beds are all foam, they tend to be very quiet. Unwanted noise is more common in hybrid beds that combine foam with a system of springs.

Sex

For being all-foam mattresses, both the Mint and the Casper have just enough responsiveness to make them well-suited for getting intimate. But the Casper fares just a little bit better, which helped it land on our list of best mattresses for sex.

Company Policies

When buying an online mattress, it’s especially important to understand the company’s policies. Let’s learn more about Tuft & Needle and Casper’s warranty information, sleep trial period, and return policy.

Warranty Info

Both the Mint and the Casper come with a 10-year warranty.

Sleep Trial

Both beds have a trial period of 100 nights.

Return Policy

The Mint and the Casper both offer a full refund to customers who aren’t satisfied with the bed, as long as it’s within the 100-night trial period. The Casper team will even send someone to your home to pick up the mattress.
