It’s also worth noting that the bed comes in two different firmness options—Firm and Relaxed Firm. For this review, we’ll be covering the Relaxed Firm model. The Helix’s most notable feature is its customization. Buyers will be matched with one of several different beds depending on their preferences. When buying a new mattress, two of the most important factors are always going to be the firmness and feel of the materials. Let’s see how these two beds stack up against one another.

How Firm Are the Loom & Leaf and Helix Mattresses?

The Loom & Leaf begins to feel softer over time, so the firmness level should range between 6.5 and 7. These numbers place it in the category of Medium Firm. The Helix beds are wide-ranging in their firmness. For instance, the Helix Sunset is the softest model, scoring a 5.5 on the firmness scale. Conversely, the Dawn and Twilight models both score a 7.5.

Sleeping on the Loom & Leaf and Helix Mattresses

We personally tested out all of these mattresses. Here’s how they felt in different positions. Side-sleeping on the Loom & Leaf resulted in great pressure relief on the shoulders and hips. The bed also felt good on the back, with its memory foam filling in the lumbar region and providing support, as well as pain relief. Stomach-sleeping was a little bit trickier, as the mattress lacked proper support (different from pressure relief) for the hips. If you prefer this sleeping position, you may want a bed that provides better alignment for the hips and shoulders, such as one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers. Once again, sleepers will likely prefer a different Helix mattress depending on their sleeping position. So let’s break it down real nice and simple: The Sunset, Moonlight, and Midnight models felt the best for side sleepers. The Midnight, Dusk, and Twilight models are probably the best fit for back sleepers. Lastly, the Twilight and Dawn proved to be the best matches for stomach sleepers.

What Do the Loom & Leaf and Helix Mattresses Feel Like?

The top layers of the Loom & Leaf have a slow, sinking feeling. Sleeping on the bed is a classic memory-foam experience—a little bit of sinkage, a little bit of contouring. The Helix is going to be a lot more springy and responsive thanks to its coils and proprietary Responsive Foam and Dynamic Foam. But these traits are also going to vary from model to model.

Average-Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs

Average-weight back and side sleepers should find a lot to love in the Loom & Leaf, as the bed provides plenty of contouring, pressure relief, and support on the lumbar area. Average-weight stomach sleepers may need a bed with more support on the hips. With the Helix, there seems to be a model for all types of sleeping positions. Average-weight back sleepers might gravitate toward the Helix Midnight with its blend of spinal support and pressure relief, or the Helix Dusk, which offers even firmer spinal support. Average-weight side sleepers might want to check out the Helix Midnight for a firmer feel or the Helix Moonlight or Sunset for a softer, pressure-relieving experience. And if you’re an average-weight stomach sleeper, the Helix Twilight or Helix Dawn will probably be most comfortable.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

Overall, the Loom & Leaf has the materials to make heavy sleepers feel supported, with the Relaxed Firm bed clocking in at 7.5 on the firmness scale for those over 230 lbs. In terms of sleeping position, heavy side sleepers will likely find the bed most comfortable. Heavier back and stomach sleepers might want a bed with more hip support—perhaps the Loom & Leaf Firm model. When considering the Helix, heavier back sleepers should find adequate support on the Helix Dusk, thanks to its mixture of pressure relief and sustained spinal alignment. Heavier side sleepers should look at the softer beds in the line such as the Helix Moonlight or the Helix Sunset. And last but not least, heavier stomach sleepers could find the spinal support they need in the Helix Dawn, the firmest of Helix’s mattresses. Those who weigh more than 300 lbs should consider the Helix PLUS, a supportive mattress built specifically with larger people in mind.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

Lightweight sleepers may find the Relaxed Firm Loom & Leaf mattress a touch too firm and might be better off with another bed. Helix, on the other hand, offers lightweight sleepers several beds to choose from. For back sleepers, the Helix Moonlight, Midnight, and Dusk have plenty of spinal support and varying levels of pressure relief. Lightweight side sleepers should look at the Helix Midnight, Moonlight, or Sunset, and lightweight stomach sleepers will probably be best supported by the Helix Twilight or Dawn.

Cover

The Loom & Leaf’s cover is quilted with organic cotton, and it’s zoned to provide more support in the middle of the mattress—the area where you need it the most. All of the Helix mattresses have the same Breathe Knit cover that’s stretchy and breathable. Its construction promotes airflow through the top of the mattress. You can also add a GlacioTex™ Pillow Top for more cooling and plushness.

Comfort Layers

In total, the Loom & Leaf has four foam layers, with the first three designed toward comfort. First up is a 2” layer of memory foam. With a 4-lb. density, its surface is convoluted to assist with airflow. The middle comfort layer is topped with a gel laminate panel, made of a proprietary Spinal Zone Gel to help with cooling and spinal support. Underneath that is the third and final comfort layer, comprised of 2” of high-density memory foam. This is where most the bed’s body contouring comes from. As we said earlier, all of Helix’s mattresses are built from proprietary foam, memory foam and coils. All of these layers work together to form a mattress that’s bouncier than the Loom & Leaf. Support Layer

Like many other all-foam mattresses you’ll see online, the Loom & Leaf is supported by a standard polyfoam base designed to give some extra support at the bottom of the bed. As with the cover, the support layer of all six Helix models is going to be the same—an expanse of individually-wrapped coils over a high-density foam base. This provides structure and support for the mattress as a whole.

Mattress Height

The Loom & Leaf is 12” tall. Standard Helix mattresses are 12″ tall, and Luxe models are 14″ tall. The Helix Plus mattress is around 12″ tall.

We put these mattresses through a range of tests covering everything from temperature regulation to motion transfer and edge support. Let’s see how well they did against each other.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

While both brands sleep very cool, if we had to pick a winner in this category, it would be the Loom & Leaf because of its cooling Spinal Zone Gel in the middle comfort layer.

Motion Transfer

Like so many other all-foam mattresses, there was little to no motion transfer in our test for the Loom & Leaf. That means the bed is a great option for couples who don’t want to be disturbed by their partner’s movement. With the Helix beds, you’re going to get different results depending on the model. We observed the best motion isolation on the Helix Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight due to the slow-moving memory foam near the top of these mattresses. So this one really does feel like a tie. The Loom & Leaf is a great bed for couples and Helix offers plenty of fantastic options as well.

Edge Support

If you’re sitting or lying on the edge of the Loom & Leaf, you might feel a little bit of collapse, but nothing too severe. For an all-foam mattress, the bed definitely has above-average edge support. With Helix, we found good edge support across all six models. Because all of them are hybrids with a mixture of foam and springs, Helix wins in this category by a hair.

Durability

The Loom & Leaf mattress is made of sturdy materials that should make for a long-term investment that stands the test of time. Likewise, the high-density foams and coils of the Helix mattresses are considerably sturdy, meaning these beds should also last a while.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing refers to the faint smell that emerges when opening and unrolling any bed-in-a-box. When I unboxed the Helix, I did not notice this chemical smell, but it dissipated within a few days. The Loom & Leaf did not come compressed in a cardboard box, so there was no off-gassing whatsoever.

Noise

Thanks to its all-foam construction, the Loom & Leaf is more or less a silent bed. The Helix beds are all fairly quiet, too. However, because they have springs, it’s possible that the mattress could start to squeak over time.

Sex

When people seek out one of the best mattresses for sex, they’re usually concerned with whether it will be easy to change positions, as well as if the bed feels bouncy and resilient. The Loom & Leaf’s upper foam layers are slow-reacting, making it a bit difficult to move around on the bed. So it may not be the best mattress for sex. That means Helix wins in this category. Because all six models contain coils, it’s fairly easy to move around. That said, some models could be better for sex than others. The Helix Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight all have memory foam in the top layer, which could hamper mobility with their slower-moving feel.
