There are two main weave styles used to construct sheets: percale and sateen. Birch makes an organic sateen sheet set that feels buttery soft and cozy. This organic cotton sheet set also has a GOTS certification, but they are also Fair Trade certified. This means that the sheets are made safe in a responsible way that’s fair across the entire supply chain line.
The sateen weave in these sheets makes them feel incredibly soft, but they have a thread count of 320, which is on the lower end. But this just means that they’ll do a better job at being breathable and letting air flow through.
Many organic sheet sets don’t have a lot of color options, as companies tend to opt out of color dyes. But Birch does offer four natural shades, with a pop of blue for those looking for variety or wanting to match a color scheme.

- Birch is known for its organic bedding, and this set of sheets is no different!

What Makes a Bed Sheet Organic?
These days, buying organic products has become a huge draw for consumers. From the food we eat, to the sheets we sleep on, seeing “organic” on the label is very common now. But for sheets, what does “organic” mean, and how can a set of sheets be organic anyway?
It all comes down to certifications. Throughout this list, you’ll see GOTS-certified cotton, or OEKO-Tex certified materials. Both of these certifications are key indicators of organic products.
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
The GOTS certification is the highest quality standard for organic products, as acquiring it is rigorous and expensive. But seeing GOTS guarantees an organic product that has been responsibly produced and has used the fewest amount of chemicals, if any at all. You’ll often see GOTS for cotton bedding, but linens that use flax, like the Avocado Organic Linens have this certification as well.
OEKO-Tex Standard 100
Even if the OEKO-Tex certification is the only one you see, this is still a good indicator that a product was made with your health in mind. The OEKO-Tex certification is another rigorous testing process to ensure that the materials used were grown without harmful chemicals. In fact, the materials are tested against upwards of 350 toxic chemicals. And this isn’t just for cotton products! It applies to bamboo, eucalyptus (or Tencel), flax, and believe it or not, even synthetic materials like polyester.
FAQs
Are organic bed sheets safer than non-organic?
Organic sheets that are grown and made with fewer chemicals can in fact be safer for you. Be sure to look out for the OEKO-Tex certification. This guarantees that your bedding set is made without harmful toxins or chemicals.
Are organic sheets hypoallergenic?
Being an organic product really means the materials were grown without harsh chemicals or pesticides. They aren’t exactly guaranteed hypoallergenic. For that, I’d look at the materials used. Bamboo and Tencel lyocell (or eucalyptus) are naturally hypoallergenic materials. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, bamboo and Tencel are better options.
Can you use fabric softener on organic sheets?
I wouldn’t recommend adding in a fabric softener to your sheets if they are certified organic. In essence you’re adding in a chemical to the washing process, and it could cause the fibers of your sheets to break down a bit easier. And some sheets are designed to naturally get softer the more you use and wash them, like the Avocado Organic Linens and the American Blossom sheets.
Additionally, the manufacturer will provide you with the best washing and care instructions for your sheets. Be sure to follow those instructions as best you can. And if you can’t find them in your product, the company will almost always have instructions on how to wash your sheets on its website.
