Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter Materials

Let’s go over the high-quality materials that Brooklinen uses for its down alternative comforter to give you an idea of how this comforter will perform.

Cover

On the outside of the comforter, Brooklinen uses a 100% cotton shell. The cotton fabric has been woven with a sateen weave, which gives this cotton shell a really soft, smooth texture and feel. It won’t feel very crisp or rustle loudly when you move it.

The cover is sewn through with a baffle box construction. This means that the cotton shell is sewn all the way through into a square pattern. Baffle box constructions are common for comforters, as it helps keep the inner fill evenly distributed and prevents clumping.

The Brooklinen down alternative comforter can act as a comforter on its own, but for those who want to add some color (the comforter only comes in white), there are corner loops that allow this to act as a duvet insert.

Fill

Within the cotton shell, Brooklinen has a down alternative fluff. This fluff is made from recycled plastic bottles, making it a fairly eco-friendly option. Even with this in mind, the fill feels very fluffy, soft and lightweight.

Warmth

Brooklinen offers this comforter in three different warmth options: lightweight, all-season and ultra-warm. For this review, I received the all-season, so that’s what I’ll base this section on. Just know that the warmth will change depending on what you choose.

The all-season model is intended for year-round use, but when I tested this comforter, the added warmth was noticeable. It wasn’t so hot and stuffy that I was kicking it off. But if you’re a hot sleeper, or live in a hot climate, I wouldn’t recommend this comforter.

Allergies/Allergens?

Brooklinen does list the down alternative comforter as a hypoallergenic product. This is because of the recycled material for the fill. It won’t trap allergens in your sleep environment, nor should it trigger any allergies. The cotton shell should feel soft and smooth on sensitive skin as well.

30-60 Min Nap with the Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter

As a hot sleeper, I tend to only use comforters in the wintertime. I also live in Texas, and at the time of testing this comforter, Austin experienced over 30 consecutive days of temperatures over 100 degrees. So, not the most ideal time to test a comforter.

But napping with the Brooklinen down alternative comforter wasn’t as hot and stuffy as I was anticipating it to be. I spent closer to an hour with this comforter. Though I have the all-season model, the added warmth was noticeable. But I never found myself wanting to kick off the comforter.

This comforter has a good amount of fluff in it, but it didn’t feel particularly heavy. I really enjoyed how soft and smooth the cotton shell felt, too. It made sleeping with it very cozy. I think if I were to use a comforter year-round, I would have needed the lightweight model. The all-season was good for a quick nap, but I couldn’t sleep with it on a regular basis.

Caring for the Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter

Brooklinen does not recommend machine-washing the down alternative comforter. Instead, the brand recommends spot cleaning or dry cleaning when accidents happen. However, if you want to protect the comforter, adding a machine-washable duvet cover is an option.

For spot cleaning, Brooklinen doesn’t offer any specific instructions, but the brand does make a point to tell customers to avoid using bleach. Do not iron the comforter either.

How Does the Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter Compare to Other Comforters?

If you’re torn between a few different comforters, comparison shopping is always a good idea. Comforters are made with a lot of materials, so let’s compare the Brooklinen down alternative comforter to a bamboo comforter from Nolah and a luxurious silk comforter from Nest Bedding.

Brooklinen vs Nolah

Nolah makes a number of bamboo bedding products, and the brand’s comforter is also made entirely of bamboo. From the outer cover to the inner fill, Nolah uses high-quality, silky-feeling bamboo viscose. This type of comforter will perform differently than the Brooklinen comforter.

A hand brushes across the Nolah Bamboo Comforter to show how it feels.

The Brooklinen down alternative comforter comes in three different warmth options, while Nolah only offers one warmth option. The Nolah comforter is thin and not very fluffy, and in combination with its breathability and moisture-wicking properties, it’s a better fit for hot sleepers who want something thicker than a top sheet to sleep with year-round.

But if you want a fluffy, cozy-feeling comforter, the Brooklinen down alternative comforter will work much better, so opt for the all-season or ultra-warm models. Plus, the Brooklinen comforter has a more recognizable cotton feel, which might be a better option if you’re not used to the silky feeling of bamboo.

Brooklinen vs Nest

The Nest Silk Cloud comforter uses Mulberry silk fibers for the inner fill, which are encased in a cotton shell. This comforter is much thinner and more lightweight than the all-season model of the Brooklinen comforter. If you prefer something thick and fluffy, opt for the Brooklinen comforter.

However, thanks to the thinness and silk’s ability to be temperature regulating, the Nest Silk Cloud comforter will be a better choice for people who run hot or live in warm climates. The silk fill certainly makes this comforter more of an investment, but silk fibers are very durable. With good care, the Nest Silk Cloud comforter should last you several years.

But if you want a cozy comforter and are shopping on a budget, the Brooklinen comforter is a good deal more affordable than the Nest comforter.

Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter FAQs

How do you wash a down alternative comforter from Brooklinen?

Unfortunately, the down alternative comforter is not machine-washable. Brooklinen recommends spot cleaning or dry cleaning. But Brooklinen mentions that dry cleaning might decrease the lifespan of the comforter.

How long will the Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter last?

Around three to four years. Brooklinen offers a one year-warranty in addition to the 365 day trial period. With good care, the comforter should last at least the warranty, and will last much longer with good care.

Does a down alternative comforter need to go in a duvet cover?

No, it doesn’t. However, many comforters double as duvet inserts these days. Brooklinen makes its down alternative comforter with corner loops so you can attach duvet covers to help it last longer or add some color. Brooklinen also sells duvet covers, but be sure to check out our list of the best duvet covers for more options.
