Cocoon Chill Mattress Firmness and Feel
When testing a new mattress, we always look closely its firmness level and feel. Keep reading to learn whether the Cocoon mattress meets all of your sleep needs.
How Firm is the Cocoon Chill?
On our firmness scale, the Cocoon Chill mattress comes in at a 7.5/10, which is definitely firmer than average beds. There is some soft memory foam on top, but that layer is only two inches. Pressing into the Cocoon, people will hit the support layer pretty quickly, so if someone is larger, they could feel like the mattress is even firmer.
Sleeping On The Cocoon Chill
While back sleeping, most sleepers will find the Cocoon feels very supportive. The memory foam layer allows hips to sink in just a bit, while the bottom layers support the rest of the body.
The Cocoon Chill may feel too firm for most side sleepers. With time, the mattress could create added pressure on shoulders and hips.
The Cocoon is a great match for stomach sleepers, because it doesn’t let hips sink in too far. Sleepers should feel well supported in this sleeping position.
What Does the Cocoon Chill Feel Like?
The Cocoon Chill offers some of that classic memory foam feel, but not too much. People will sleep on top of the mattress, and they shouldn’t sink in too deeply.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
People who weigh between 130lbs and 230lbs should feel very comfortable while back sleeping. The soft memory foam gently contours the body, but there is still plenty of support beneath.
Side sleepers, on the other hand, may feel the Cocoon mattress is too firm. People could start to feel pain on pressure points while lying in this sleeping position.
Average weight stomach sleepers should find the bed is a great match. It’s firm and supportive enough to prevent hips from sinking too deep, so the body should stay in alignment all night.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Because this is a firm mattress, heavyweight people should feel very comfortable while back sleeping. The top layer provides nice contouring, and the support layer helps to keep the body in alignment.
Heavier sleepers may find the Cocoon feels firmer than 7.5/10. Because of this, it may not be a great choice for heavyweight side sleepers. People who weigh more than 230lbs are likely to press through the comfort layer and feel pressure on shoulders and hips.
Heavier stomach sleepers should feel quite comfortable on the Cocoon Chill mattress. The bed provides a good amount of hip support, so the body should not get out of alignment in this sleeping position. Those who weigh closer to 300lbs, however, may find the Cocoon isn’t supportive enough. Instead, they may want to take a look at one of the best innerspring mattresses.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
On the Cocoon Chill, lightweight sleepers should feel comfortable in all sleeping positions. Because they aren’t likely to press deeply into the support layer, lightweight people should feel comfortable while stomach, back, and side sleeping.

The cover is soft and contains a phase change material to make the mattress cool to the touch and a little bit more breathable.

How Does the Cocoon Chill Mattress Perform?
We’ve taken a look at the Cocoon Chill’s firmness level, feel, and pricing. Now let’s see how this memory foam mattress stacks up in terms of performance. Keep reading to learn about its cooling features, motion transfer, durability, and edge support.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Like its name suggests, the Cocoon Chill is great at dissipating heat. The cover is made out of a soft phase change material, which makes the mattress feel cool to the touch. Oftentimes, all-foam mattresses can overheat, but you likely won’t have to worry about the Cocoon Chill getting hot at night.

Motion Transfer
If someone sleeps with a partner, they should definitely keep motion transfer in mind. Basically, people want to find a mattress that isolates the motions made by them and their partner.
To test how well the Cocoon handles motion transfer, I put a glass of water on top of the mattress and pressed into other parts of the mattress, and the glass barely moved. I also laid down and asked Marten to get in and out of bed as well as roll around, and I can say that I barely felt his movements at all.
In the end, this lets me know that the Cocoon should be a good mattress for couples who don’t want to be disturbed by their partner’s movements. Make sure to check out our best mattresses for couples.
Edge Support
Couples and people who like to take up their whole mattress should also keep edge support in mind. People will want to know if they and their partner will get the right amount of space. Will they be able to sleep near the edge of their mattress, or will they feel like they are going to fall off?
When I sit near the edge of the Cocoon, the mattress doesn’t collapse too much. It is a firmer-than-average mattress, so that is not too surprising. Also, when I lie down, I can get very close to the edge while still feeling secure.
Durability
The Cocoon Chill is made with high-quality materials, but it likely won’t last as long as a luxury hybrid mattress. Because it’s a simpler mattress, we expect the Cocoon Chill to last between 5-8 years.
Off-Gassing
When opening a new bed-in-a-box, it’s common to notice a slight chemical smell. We call this off-gassing, and it was noticeable with the Cocoon Chill. After 48 hours, though, the smell completely faded away.
Noise
Because it’s made with memory foam, the Cocoon Chill is a very quiet mattress.
Sex
People who are looking for one of the best mattresses for sex should think about the bed’s responsiveness and bounce. The Cocoon Chill has a little bit of that slow-moving memory foam feel, but not too much. Couples shouldn’t feel like they’re sinking into the mattress, and it should still be pretty easy to move around on. Because of this, the Cocoon Chill is a decent option for getting intimate.

Common Sealy Complaints
Though there are many great things about Sealy mattresses, we occasionally come across customer complaints. Usually, these are related to return policies and warranties. Customers sometimes do not read the entire warranty before requesting a return and are dissatisfied when they cannot get their money back. We always recommend shoppers take a close look at the warranty information on Sealy’s website before purchasing.

Cocoon Chill Vs. Nectar
The Cocoon Chill and Nectar mattresses are both made entirely out of foam, but they differ in terms of firmness and feel. The Cocoon Chill is much firmer, so it’s a better choice for back and stomach sleepers. The Nectar mattress has a medium-firm feel, so it’s a great pick for side sleepers.
People who like to sink into their mattress will prefer the Nectar. On the Cocoon Chill, sleepers will feel like they are lying on top of their mattress rather than inside it.
The two mattresses have similar price points, so they are good picks for people who are on a budget.

Cocoon Chill Vs. Purple
The Cocoon Chill and Purple mattresses differ in terms of construction and feel. The Original Purple mattress is made with a proprietary gel polymer grid that feels squishy and firm. This makes the Purple a great choice for heavier side sleepers. The Cocoon Chill is made with traditional memory foam layers, and it’s a better choice for back sleepers.
The Cocoon Chill feels a bit firmer than the Original Purple Mattress, so it may not be a great fit for side sleepers. The Purple mattress is a 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, so it’s a good choice for people who prefer medium-firm mattresses.
The two mattresses are similar in terms of price, but we expect the Purple mattress to last a little bit longer.
