Best Twin Size Mattress – Which Is Right For You?

We receive free products to review and participate in affiliate programs, where we are compensated for items purchased through links from our site. See our disclosure page for more information.

Though it may be small in size, a great twin mattress can be mighty. Its dimensions are extremely versatile, suitable for kid’s rooms, dorm rooms, and guest rooms alike. Twin beds can also be a great choice for single adults with small bedrooms.

We considered many mattresses when compiling this list, assessing not only performance, but price as well. Since a twin is often used as a temporary, transitional mattress, we wanted to be sure that we weren’t recommending you spend an outrageous amount of money on something that you’ll only use for several years. Below, you’ll find a list of the best twin mattresses, with options for all types of sleepers.

Our Verdict: What’s the Best Twin Size Mattress?

Our expert reviewers chose the Nectar as the best twin mattress due to its high-quality materials that should be comfortable enough for a variety of different sleepers.

How We Tested the Best Twin Size Mattresses

Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches has reviewed more than 600 mattresses, using proprietary analysis and hands-on testing to establish easy-to-understand scores. In addition to an overall score, we measure subscores for support, edge support, cooling, motion transfer, durability, trial period, and warranty.

How We Chose the Best Twin Size Mattresses

To ensure that we only included the most desirable mattresses, we stuck with beds that scored well by our metric in these key areas when looking specifically for a twin bed:

Edge Support

Edge support refers to how well the sides or edges of a mattress hold up when weight is applied to them. This factor particularly holds weight if you’re considering a twin size mattress, which is the most narrow option. We choose beds with robust edge support, ensuring the sleeper can feel secure wherever they roll around. If you’re an adult sleeping on a twin mattress on a day bed for lack of space for a couch, solid edge support is also a nice feature, as it makes sitting on your bed much more comfortable.

Pressure Relief

Having a twin size mattress with good pressure relief is especially important if you’re buying a bed for a child. As our little ones grow a bit more each day, their bones, muscles, and joints develop rapidly. A mattress with good pressure relief helps distribute their body weight evenly, reducing stress on areas like the hips, shoulders, and back — areas more vulnerable during growth spurts. Restless kids and active kids can also get more cozy on a bed that alleviates pressure well. We selected beds that use top-tier pressure relieving foams, like latex, memory foam, and AirFoam.

Value and Affordability

Although twins tend to be more affordable than larger beds, price is still a top of mind consideration. Twin mattresses are often bought for children, guest rooms, or smaller spaces, and people sometimes opt for cheaper options. We tried to strike a balance between value and affordability when making our selections. Our goal was to furnish a list of high-quality twin mattresses with better durability. These twin beds aren’t the absolute cheapest you’ll see, but we think you’ll save money long-term on a bed with better durability.

Back Sleepers
The Nectar mattress offers plenty of support for most back sleepers under 230 lbs.
Pros of the Nectar Mattress
This mattress has a slow-moving feel. If you like mattresses that contour to your body, this could be a great option.
The Nectar mattress isolates motion well, which is helpful for people who share a bed with a partner or a pet.
It offers plenty of pressure relief for side sleepers who weigh less than 230 lb.
Cons of the Nectar Mattress
Even though it has cooling gel-infused foam, it’s not the best mattress for hot sleepers.
It’s not supportive enough for most stomach sleepers. In this position, you may feel your hips sink out of alignment, which can lead to lower back pain.
Because it’s an all-foam bed-in-a-box mattress, it has a 48-hour off-gassing period. You’ll need to let the mattress air out for two days before sleeping on it.

The Nectar is an affordable all-foam mattress that offers lots of pressure relief and body contouring. It works well for most side sleepers, because it helps cushion shoulders and hips. It is also a good option for couples, because it isolates motion well. However, the Nectar mattress isn’t supportive enough for most stomach sleepers and heavyweight people. If you tend to sleep hot at night, you may want to look for a mattress with more cooling features. Learn more in our Nectar mattress video review.

Our Expert’s Take

The Nectar mattress is a memory foam mattress that has a slow-moving feel that should keep you sleeping comfortably in place all night. It gives you the classic memory foam feel, so when you lay into it you get some nice sinkage, and it will contour around your body. It ranks at a 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, meaning it comes in at a perfectly medium-firm feel.

What our testers say: “Lying on the Nectar, I got that typical, slow-moving feel that many memory foam mattresses have. I sank into the top layer and felt it conform to my body. The softness and contouring felt great for back sleeping and could work for side sleeping, too, but this mattress was too soft for stomach sleeping.”Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Nectar

  • The Nectar mattress won’t break your bank. In fact, you can get a twin for under $500.
  • The all-foam construction of the Nectar provides some excellent pressure relief. In fact, we recommend this mattress for those suffering from joint pain or arthritis.

What to Keep in Mind About the Nectar

  • The flip side of being soft enough to provide plenty of pressure relief is that this isn’t the most supportive mattress. We suggest heavyweight sleepers consider a different mattress.
  • Stomach sleepers will want a firmer mattress, as the Nectar doesn’t have the support needed to keep your hips propped up and your spine aligned.

Other user reviews

The Nectar earned an average rating of 4.7 out of 5, based on a whopping 56,046 reviews from the company website. Shoppers of the twin Nectar mattress say that it’s great for both kids and adults. Others weren’t quite as happy, saying that the mattress was saggy even after letting it expand fully.

Couples
This bed absorbs motion well for a hybrid mattress, so couples shouldn’t notice their partner’s movements.
Pros of the Helix Midnight Mattress
The Helix Midnight mattress is a fantastic choice for back and side sleepers. It’s a perfect medium-firm mattress that offers a lot of comfort from the foam at the top with supportive coils at the bottom.
This mattress shouldn’t trap too much heat thanks to the coils, which allow for airflow. You also have the option to add a specialized cooling cover.
Hybrid mattresses can be bouncy and disturb others who are in bed, but the Helix Midnight absorbs motion very well for this type of mattress.
Cons of the Helix Midnight Mattress
This mattress is too soft to support stomach sleepers. The hips will dip into this bed over time, which can cause strain on the lower back.
While this bed absorbs motion well, it’s still a hybrid. If you don’t want that bouncy, coil feeling to your mattress, you should look for an all-foam bed.

The Helix Midnight is Helix’s most popular model because of its medium-firmness and works well for back and side sleepers. The top layers of foam provide good pressure relief, but the coils offer a good amount of support. It won’t trap heat thanks to those coils, and you can even opt for a cooling cover. Be sure to watch our video review to learn more about the Helix Midnight.

Our Expert’s Take

If you’re on the hunt for a great twin size mattress, Helix is a great place to start. They offer a line of high-quality hybrid mattresses that range from very soft to very firm, so there’s something for every type of sleeper. In our experience, the best overall twin size mattress is the Helix Midnight, their most popular model. This medium-firm model provides a great balance of comfort and support, making it a good fit for combination sleepers.

What our testers say:I’m a back sleeper, so when I hopped onto the Helix Midnight, I felt like it was a perfect match. The layer of Memory Plus Foam conformed to my body so I could sink comfortably into it, and I felt supported by the individually-wrapped coils in the support layer.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Helix Midnight

  • Thanks to the Helix Midnight’s layer of comfortable Memory Plus Foam, you can sleep soundly even as your partner tosses and turns. This is because the dense foam isolates motion waves to one side of the bed, rather than allowing them to reverberate across the surface.
  • The Helix Midnight particularly excels for back sleepers, as the medium-firm, hybrid construction allowed us to sink in just a little bit, but not so much that we felt enveloped by the mattress. This is reflected by the bed’s high responsiveness score (4/5), which can be an indicator that a bed has a nice bounce-back.
  • The edge support on the Helix Midnight is solid (4/5). We measured a 2.25″ drop under the weight of our heaviest tester (who is roughly 250 lbs), indicating a bed with edge support on par with higher-end hybrids.
  • The bed’s cooling claims are backed up by the mattress lab equipment. Our thermal gun measured a 3.4 degree F rise in temperature of the Midnight’s surface after a tester took a quick nap. That helped the bed earn a 4.5/5 cooling score, indicating the bed competes with the best of the best cooling builds.

What to Keep in Mind About the Helix Midnight

  • While the Helix Midnight is on the higher end of medium-firm (7/10 on the firmness scale), we still think stomach sleepers may want something that provides a bit more support. As we tested it on our stomachs, we could feel our hips sinking uncomfortably into the mattress, which can lead to back pain in the long run.

Other user reviews

From the Helix website, 6,264 customer reviews of the Helix Midnight average to a score of 4.5 out of 5. Those who purchased the twin version of the mattress are satisfied with its quality, saying it’s perfect for a guest room or kid. However, some customers claim that the mattress caused them back pain.

This bed sleeps cool. Thanks to the breathable coils and gel-infused memory foam, hot sleepers can expect a cool night’s rest.

The WinkBed is a versatile mattress that provides zoned support and cooling comfort for a fair price. This bed’s excellent responsiveness makes it a good fit for combination sleeper that want a bed that’s easy to move around on. For couples looking for motion isolation, though, this probably isn’t the best choice. Instead, check out the Nectar Premier Copper. Learn more in our video review.

Our Expert’s Take

The WinkBed is a quality mattress that consistently makes our lists as one of the best hybrid mattresses on the market. It’s made with a combination of soft foams and strong, supportive coils that give it a balanced yet firm feel and help support a neutral spinal alignment. It also has a Euro-style pillow-top that adds a bit of luxury, similar to what you might find in a high-end hotel.

What our testers say: “Since I sleep on my back, the WinkBed offered me a nice balance of comfort and support. The zoning in this mattress offers great lumbar support and makes this a great mattress for lower back pain and makes it a great orthopedic mattress. Good news for grandparents coming over for the weekend.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the WinkBed

  • The WinkBed’s construction was clearly designed with cooling in mind, as the breathable cover, gel-infused foam, and layer of individually-wrapped coils all work to expel heat rather than trap it.
  • This bad boy has some seriously sturdy edges. In fact, it earned a perfect score of 5/5 on our edge support test, thanks to its supportive coils. Strong edge support means the mattress perimeter won’t sag much under your weight, making it much easier to sleep toward the far ends of the bed.

What to Keep in Mind About the WinkBed

  • We weren’t too impressed with the WinkBed’s motion isolation. The springiness of the hybrid construction means you’ll be more likely to feel your partner’s movements as they toss and turn at night.
  • While the WinkBed does include foam in its construction it won’t provide that doughy, memory foam feel that some people love.

Other user reviews

Based on 8,419 customer reviews on the WinkBed website, this mattress has an average rating of 4.8 out of 5. Buyer’s praise the structural quality of the mattress, saying that they haven’t had any issues with sagging. On the other hand, some unhappy customers point out that the mattress is either much firmer or softer than they thought it would be.

The DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress that offers great support for back sleepers and nice cooling for hot sleepers. Its mix of foam and coils ensures you get the right amount of support, while its breathable materials ensure you don’t sleep too hot. It is a bouncier mattress, and if you prefer more of a memory foam feel, consider the Nectar mattress. Learn more in our video review.

Our Expert’s Take

Our average-weight mattress tester (between 130 and 230 lb) felt fantastic while testing this mattress on his back. He said that his hips sank comfortably into the DreamCloud’s comfort layers while the bottom layer of innerspring coils helped support his body and keep his spine aligned. If you weigh under 130 lb or over 230 lb, you may not feel quite as comfortable on your back, but if you’re an average-weight back sleeper it’s a great option for you

What our testers say: “On the DreamCloud, I felt best whenever I slept on my back. Because this mattress has a firmer feel, it offered plenty of lumbar support. My hips sank into the top layer slightly, but my back stayed in a neutral alignment.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the DreamCloud

  • Moving around on this mattress was a breeze when we tested it, thanks to its responsive, bouncy feel. This is great news for combination sleepers, who often switch sleeping positions throughout the night.
  • Unlike many high-quality hybrid mattresses on the market, the DreamCloud is quite affordable. If you take advantage of one of the generous sales the company often runs, you can purchase a twin mattress for under $500.
  • Purchase of the DreamCloud comes with a generous lifetime warranty.

What to Keep in Mind About the DreamCloud

  • This mattress doesn’t perform well for any side sleeper, and in fact performs very poorly for heavyweight side sleepers (over 230 lb). The comfort layers on top of the DreamCloud are too thin to provide adequate pressure relief around side sleepers’ hips and shoulders. If you’re a side sleeper, we recommend the Helix Midnight instead.
  • The DreamCloud doesn’t just perform poorly for heavyweight side sleepers, it also isn’t a good choice for heavyweight stomach sleepers. The mattress doesn’t provide enough support to keep larger peoples’ hips elevated. We would suggest you consider the Firmer version of the WinkBed

Other user reviews

The DreamCloud mattress has an average rating of 4.6 out of 5, based on 7,640 reviews on the company website. Over 40 of the five-star reviews mention the twin-size version of the DreamCloud, with some customers saying that it’s been a great fit for their children. One negative review of the mattress states that it “feels like concrete”. If you’re not a fan of firm mattresses, then it may not be for you.

The Nolah Natural is an eco-friendly mattress that contains organic cotton, organic wool, and eco-friendly latex foam. It feels softer than average, which makes it a nice choice for many side sleepers. It’s not supportive enough for most stomach sleepers, though. It also doesn’t isolate motion well, so it may not be a good option for couples. Watch our Nolah Natural mattress review video to learn more.

Our Expert’s Take

If you struggle with allergies, this should affect the type of mattress you buy. With that in mind, we recommend the best hypoallergenic twin size mattress, the Nolah Natural. It boasts Talalay latex, a naturally hypoallergenic material that won’t exacerbate your allergies. In addition, this material is extremely durable, making the Nolah Natural a good long-term investment.

What our testers say: “The Nolah is a very bouncy bed, thanks to its strong coils and responsive comfort layers. I moved around really easily on it, and felt like I was laying ‘on it’ rather than ‘in it.’ I could feel the soft latex layer cushion my body, especially when sleeping on my side.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Nolah Natural

  • The Nolah Natural is made with eco-friendly materials using a construction process that is environmentally friendly. Not only is this great for the Earth, but the product is hypoallergenic as a result.
  • Latex is a naturally cooling material, and the Nolah Natural uses plenty of it in its construction. Plus, the layer of supportive coils allows air to easily pass through the mattress, meaning it doesn’t trap heat.

What to Keep in Mind About the Nolah Natural

  • This is not a great mattress if you sleep with a partner, especially if you’re a light sleeper. The latex makes it quite bouncy, so your partner’s movements at night are more likely to wake you up.
  • The perimeter of the mattress isn’t very sturdy. If you sleep close to the edge of the bed just know that this one might sag under your weight.

Other user reviews

Based on 130 reviews from the Nolah website, the Nolah Natural has an average score of 4.9 out of 5. Customers rave about the Nolah’s hybrid construction, which provides nice comfort and support. Some people, however, were disappointed that their back pain persisted even after spending several days with the mattress.

The Saatva Youth has a flippable design that should last several years while your kiddo grows. The soft side works best for childrne 3 to 7, while the firmer side is for children 8 to 12. It’s a classic medium-firm and has a bouncy feel that makes it easy to move around on. Perfect for kiddos who have some energy to burn before bed.

Our Expert’s Take

The Saatva Youth is the only twin mattress on this list that’s designed specifically for children. It has a flippable design where one side is constructed for kids between the ages 3 and 7, while the other side accommodates large kids aged 8 to 12. This is a great value add for the mattress, as it means you won’t need to buy a new, firmer mattress once the 3-to-7 side becomes too soft for them.

What our testers say: “Both sides of the Saatva Youth mattress should work for kids who spend a lot of time back sleeping. It’s a fairly supportive mattress that should promote proper spinal alignment. The side for 8-to-12-year-olds is a bit more supportive to account for the fact that kids in this age group will almost certainly weigh more than kids between the ages of 3 and 7.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Saatva Youth

  • The Saatva Youth has a nice bouncy feel. While we don’t recommend children take advantage of this by jumping on the bed, a bouncy mattress is good for children who change sleeping positions throughout the night, as it will make it easier for them to move around.
  • For kids who easily overheat at night, the Saatva Youth should be a good option. Its hybrid construction allows for good breathability, so that body heat doesn’t get trapped in its layers.

What to Keep in Mind About the Saatva Youth

  • The Saatva Youth doesn’t have great motion isolation. This should only really be a problem for your kid if they sleep with a pet, as the pet’s movements might disturb them as it hops in and out of bed. If this is a concern for you or your child, you might want to consider the Nectar instead.

Other user reviews

This mattress has an average rating of 4.8 out of 5, based on just 27 reviews on the Saatva website. Only one customer rated the mattress lower than a 4 out of 5, and their issue with the Saatva Youth is that they ordered it but it never arrived.

You can usually get a twin for well under $1,000 before discounts. The softer top layers` will cushion pressure points nicely, while the supportive base keeps your little one lifted and aligned.

What We Love About the Bear Cub

  • Affordability is always a plus, especially when the product is as high-quality as the Bear is.
  • Kids love having a little autonomy, and before you click “purchase” on the Bear Cub, you can ask your kid which color of the Bear Cub they’d prefer: Arctic Blue, or Salmon.
  • Highly active kids will do well on the Bear Cub, since like other Bear mattresses, the bed uses highly cooling materials like heat-dispersing foam and breathable coils.

What to Keep in Mind About the Bear Cub

  • The brand suggests the Bear Cub mattress for children under 150 lb. So, if your child experiences growing pains on the earlier side, you might need to replace their mattress sooner than you anticipated.

Other user reviews

The Bear Cub has an average score of 4.7 out of 5 based on 43 user reviews on the company website. Customers love this bed for a myriad of reasons, with some specifically calling out how great it has been for their children. Some of the negative reviews claim that the mattress is too soft.

Our Expert’s Take

Hybrid mattresses offer the best of both worlds — the comfort of foam and the support of coils. If you want the best hybrid twin size mattress, you should set your sights on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. It features individually-wrapped coils, pressure-relieving foam and a plush pillow-top. You can also select from three firmness options, but we recommend the Medium model if you want something good for multiple sleeping positions.

What our testers say: “I tested the medium-firmness mattress from Brooklyn Bedding, and I felt a plush and innerspring feel when lying on it. It had a nice bounce to it, and as a back sleeper, this mattress was a great fit. I think it’d even be great for combination sleepers.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid

  • This mattress is available in three firmness options. Side sleepers and lightweight sleepers will do best on the soft option, the medium version works well for back sleepers and average-weight combo sleepers, and if you’re a heavyweight sleeper or stomach sleeper we suggest the firm option.
  • The Brooklyn Bedding Signature sleeps nice and cool, thanks largely to the breathable layer of coils.

What to Keep in Mind About the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid

  • Those who enjoy the soft, hugging feel of memory foam will likely prefer an all-foam mattress, which will better allow them to sink into its surface and possibly provide better pressure relief.

Other user reviews

Based on 10,258 reviews on the Brooklyn Bedding website, the Signature Hybrid has an average rating of 4.7 out of 5. Users seemed to appreciate the multiple firmness options that the company offers. Some, on the other hand, state that the mattress was lumpy and/or saggy, indicating poor structural integrity.

The Titan Plus mattress works well for many heavyweight back and stomach sleepers. It’s quite firm, coming in at 9/10 on our firmness scale. This means that many side sleepers won’t get the pressure relief they need along their shoulders and hips. Watch our Titan Plus mattress review video to learn more.

Our Expert’s Take

A hybrid mattress tends to be your best bet if you’re looking for something supportive enough for a larger frame — and we mean the frame atop your mattress, not beneath it. The Titan Plus lives up to its epic name with a substantial coil layer that keeps the hips of heavier sleepers from slumping. Plus, although the top comfort layer of the mattress is made with a breezy gel memory foam, the Titan Plus is ultra-firm — a 9/10 in our firmness scale — so you won’t sink in too deep.

What our testers say: “The Titan Plus is designed to support people of my size, which means upwards of 250 lbs, and it did not disappoint. Sleeping on the mattress, I didn’t have any issues with lack of support, especially on my back and stomach. Side sleepers may want something with a little more pressure relief, however.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Titan Plus

  • This mattress has great edge support, which is particularly important when considering a twin bed. That’s because a twin already has minimal surface area, so knowing that you can comfortably rest toward the edge of the bed will allow you to maximize your use of the space.
  • The Titan Plus has plenty of features that draw heat away from your body, including breathable coils and gel memory foam, earning the bed high marks for cooling (4.5/5) from testers in the mattress lab.
  • The maker of the Titan Plus, Brooklyn Bedding, owns all its mattress operations top to bottom, unlike most brands that come up with the design but outsource the manufacturing. This practice allows Brooklyn Bedding to more competitively price their beds, including the Titan Plus.

What to Keep in Mind About the Titan Plus

  • This mattress may be too firm for side sleepers. When we tested it, our shoulders and hips felt uncomfortably jammed up by the bed’s surface. Instead, you’ll want a mattress that allows these sensitive areas to sink comfortably below the surface. We recommend the plusher Titan Plus Luxe.

Other user reviews

This mattress has an average rating of 4.7 out of 5, based on 2,500+ reviews on the Titan page. There are many customers expressing happiness with the firmness of the mattress. However, there are a handful of 1-star reviews. Of these negative comments, several of them revolve specifically around the company’s customer service, and feeling that the bed was too soft.

Ventilated latex and individually wrapped coils make for a breathable, cool night’s rest on this bed. Hot sleepers shouldn’t have to worry about this mattress trapping heat.
Cons of the Birch Natural

The Birch Natural is a great option if you’re looking for a sustainable, responsive bed. It features natural latex and individually wrapped coils for comfort and support. Its firmness is best suited to back and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, though, so side sleeepers should opt for a softer bed, like the Helix Midnight. Learn more in our video review.

Our Expert’s Take

Are you an eco-friendly shopper? Then you’ll definitely want to check out the Birch mattress. It’s made with a combination of high-quality, eco-conscious materials like latex foam, pocketed coils, natural wool and organic cotton. It has a firmer feel that will be a great match for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Latex mattresses are naturally cooling, so this bed is also a nice choice for hot sleepers.

What our testers say: “People who are back sleepers like me will probably love the Birch. I felt my hips sink into the layers of wool and latex, but they didn’t sink in too far. I could feel the latex pressing into my lumbar area, which could make this a good mattress for lower back pain.” Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Birch

  • The Birch scored perfectly on our temperature regulation test. How does this mattress stay so cool? Well, on top of the breathable coils is a layer of wool and aerated latex, which is much more breathable than the standard foam that most hybrid mattresses use in their comfort layers.
  • This mattress provides enough support to keep most heavyweight sleepers from sinking uncomfortably below the surface. This is especially true for heavyweight back sleepers, who tend to do well on a medium-firm mattress.

What to Keep in Mind About the Birch

  • Coming in at $1,349 for a twin, this mattress is not for budget shoppers. We’d only suggest considering it if you plan to use it for more than a couple of years, or if you value organic construction and materials.
  • The non-pillow-top version will likely be too firm for most side sleepers. It didn’t provide us much pressure relief around the shoulders and hips when we tested it.

Other user reviews:

The Birch mattress has an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 based on 4,128 customer reviews on the company website. Of course, shoppers praised the non-toxic nature of the Birch’s construction, but some were left unsatisfied with the lack of pain relief they received from the mattress.

Who Should Consider Buying A Twin Mattress?

Who exactly should get a twin size bed? While twin mattresses are quite small, they are still going to work for a few different types of sleepers.

  • Single adults. If you sleep by yourself and need a new mattress, a twin size could work very well for you. A twin size won’t take up too much room and, as we will get into below, could save you quite a bit of money.
  • Those who need a great mattress for kids. Besides crib mattresses, twin size mattresses are the smallest options out there. This makes them a great option for kids who have outgrown their crib mattress. The majority of bunk beds are also designed to hold twin size mattresses, so they are great for two children sharing a bedroom.
  • Smaller teenagers. If you are a parent who needs a mattress for a larger or taller teenager, a twin size mattress might not be big enough. However, if your teenager is on the smaller side, a twin size mattress could give them enough room to sleep comfortably. For more options, check out our best mattresses for teenagers roundup.
  • People with very limited space. Again, twin size mattresses are the smallest options on the market. If you live in a particularly small apartment or room, a twin size mattress will fit.Price Graphic
  • Those who need a mattress for a guest room. If you have a smaller guest room, a twin size mattress could be a great choice. Twin size mattresses take up very little space and could work for guests. For more options, check out our best mattresses for a guest room.
  • Shoppers on a very tight budget. If your budget is low, a twin size mattress could be a good way to save some extra money. It will also allow you to buy a higher-quality mattress without spending as much as you would for a full, queen, or king.

Who Shouldn’t Consider Buying A Twin Mattress?

Twin size mattresses aren’t going to work for everyone. If the following applies to you, you might want to consider a different sized mattress.

  • Heavier people. If you are a heavier person, a twin size might not be the right mattress for you. You will want to take a look at a mattress for heavy people and also consider a queen or king size mattress to get the right amount of space.Mattresses For Heavy Sleeper
  • Taller people. Being only 75” long, twin mattresses aren’t going to be long enough for most taller people. They will definitely feel their feet hanging off the edge of the bed. Tall people should look at a twin XL mattress or something larger.
  • Couples. If you sleep with a partner, a twin size mattress will probably be too small for you. A twin size mattress is barely large enough for one adult, let alone two. You should at least consider a full size mattress for you and your partner.

How Much Does a Twin Mattress Cost?

The price of a twin size mattress will depend on a few factors: materials, quality, and brand. For instance, a lower-end memory foam mattress on Amazon might only cost around $100 for a twin size. On the other hand, a latex mattress from a nicer brand could cost upwards of $1100.

That being said, most twin size mattresses will cost an average of $300. Just keep in mind that a higher-end twin size mattress could last longer than something on the lower end.

Twin Size Mattress Dimensions

A standard twin size mattress is 39” wide by 74” long. You might see some small variations in these dimensions, but a twin size mattress will always be close to 39” x 74”. See how it compares to some of the other most common mattress types in the below sizing chart.

Twin vs Full Mattress

A full size mattress is 54” wide by 74” long. You get the same amount of length as a twin mattress, but 15” less width. Because of this, the full size mattress is going to be a better option for couples. A twin size mattress is going to be very tight for couples, but a full size offers around 27” for each partner.

In addition, a full size offers more room for adults and teenagers. A twin size will work better for children, smaller teenagers, and those who have a very limited amount of space in their bedroom.

For more information, make sure to read our twin vs full mattress comparison.

Twin vs Twin XL Mattress

A twin XL mattress 39” wide by 80” long. Most twin XL mattresses are the same width as twin mattresses, but they provide 6” more length. They are the same length as a king mattress and, when you combine two twin xls mattresses, they are the same size as a king.

With their extra length, twin XL mattresses are a good choice for taller children and teenagers as well. You’ll also find twin XL mattresses in most college dorm rooms. Twin mattresses will be better for smaller children and those who are on a very tight budget.

Take a look at our twin vs twin XL mattress comparison.
