Helix Kids Mattress Firmness and Feel

Here at Mattress Clarity, we always review firmness and feel. Let’s take a moment to see what the Helix Kids bed is all about.

How Firm is the Helix Kids Mattress?

The Mattress Clarity firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 6.5/10 representing the industry standard for medium firm mattresses.

Thanks to its flippable design, the Helix Kids mattress has two firmness levels in one. The firmer side, designed for kids between the ages of three and seven, feels like 8/10. The soft side feels like 6.5/10, which makes it a great choice for children between the ages of eight and 12.

Sleeping On The Helix Kids Mattress

The firm side of the mattress works best for children between the ages of three and seven. Because it feels more supportive than most beds out there, it should suit young sleepers in all three sleeping positions.

Helix Kids Mattress

The soft side creates more pressure relief, so it works better for kids between the ages of eight and 12. Some older children might not get the necessary support while stomach sleeping, but we expect it to work well for back and side sleepers.

What Does the Helix Kids Mattress Feel Like?

The Helix Kids feels like a classic innerspring mattress. When you rest on top of it, you’ll notice the strong coils right away. A thin comfort layer surrounds the support layer, giving the mattress some extra cushioning.

However, if you’re looking for something with a slow-moving feel, you might want to consider getting one of the best memory foam mattresses.

Young Children (Ages 3 – 7)

In general, young children prefer the firm side of the Helix Kids mattress. Kiddos between the ages of three and seven won’t compress the top layers too much, so they benefit from a more supportive mattress. The high grade polyfoam layer provides the right amount of cushioning for young ones’ joints.

Older Children (Ages 8 -12)

Older children typically weigh more than young kids, so they will compress their mattresses more. That means they’ll also need a softer bed!

On the soft side of the Helix Kids mattress, older children should feel some nice pressure relief. The gel memory foam helps absorb pain along the shoulders and hips, making it a great fit for side and back sleepers. Because this bed creates more cushioning, we don’t expect it to work well for most stomach sleepers. Older kids who sleep on their stomachs might prefer to rest on the firmer side.

Helix Kids Mattress Construction

The Helix Kids Mattress contains many different features. To help you understand whether it will meet your family’s needs, we’ll detail the mattress’s construction.

Cover

The Tencel cover feels breathable and cool, so it works well for hot sleepers. And because children occasionally have accidents, this mattress has a water-repellant shield all around it. Best of all, the cover contains hypoallergenic and non-toxic materials.

Comfort Layers

On the firm side, you’ll find a thin layer of high grade polyfoam. This material creates more support than traditional memory foam, so it works especially well for younger children.

Helix Kids Mattress Construction

If you flip the mattress over to the soft side and unzip its cover, you’ll see a plush layer of gel memory foam. This material provides more pressure relief than polyfoam, so it works best for older children.

Support Layer

On the Helix Kids mattress, the 5” coil support layer sits in the middle. That way, sleepers can benefit from its durable comfort no matter which side they rest on.

To make children feel especially secure, these individually wrapped coils have extra reinforcement around the sides. That means young ones are less likely to roll off the bed in the middle of the night — a relief for many parents, I’m sure.

Mattress Height

The Helix Kids mattress is 8” tall.

Helix Kids Mattress Performance

Now that we’ve hit all of the highlights, let’s see how well the Helix Kids mattress performs. Below, we’ll explain its cooling features, motion isolation, edge support, durability, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Helix Kids mattress has many great cooling features. The coil support layer provides plenty of room for airflow, and the gel memory foam helps pull heat away from the body. Better yet, its Tencel cover feels especially breathable! All in all, this mattress is a great pick for kids to tend to sleep hot at night.

Motion Transfer

Children don’t typically share mattresses, so motion transfer may not be as important of an element to consider. However, it’s important to note that, because it contains springy coils, the Helix Kids doesn’t isolate motion well.

Edge Support

Helix reinforced the sides of the mattress, so this bed has excellent edge support. If your young one tends to roll off the bed during the night, the Helix Kids mattress should help them feel secure.

Durability

Because it contains high-quality materials, The Helix Kids mattress should last at least 10 years.

Off-Gassing

The Helix Kids is a bed-in-a-box mattress, so you might notice a slight chemical smell after it expands. This is completely normal, however, and it should completely fade away after 48 hours.

Noise

This mattress contains coils, so it could start to squeak over time. However, when we tested this bed, it was completely silent.

Company Policies

Even if you think this is the mattress your young one needs, we still urge you to read the fine print. Here’s a quick overview of Helix’s company policies.

Warranty Info

The Helix Kids mattress is backed by a 10-year warranty.

Sleep Trial

The Helix Kids mattress has a 100-night sleep trial period.

Return Policy

If your young one isn’t happy with their mattress within the trial period, you can return it for a full refund.

Common Helix Kids Mattress Complaints

Most families and kids love this mattress. The water-repellant cover, breathable construction, and flippable design makes it a solid pick for a wide range of kiddos. Some people, however, did have a few qualms. Most of the time, families complained about the bed’s firmness level. Older kids will need mattresses with thicker comfort layers. In order to get the most use out of the Helix Kids mattress, we recommend getting it for younger kids. That way, they can grow into the softer side and use it for many years to come.

How Does The Helix Kids Mattress Compare To Other Mattresses?

This isn’t the only kid’s mattress on the market. Before clicking ‘add to cart,’ make sure you know which one will work best for you. To help you narrow down the decision, we’ll compare the Helix Kids to two other popular children’s beds: The Nolah Nurture and Saatva Youth.

Helix Kids Vs. Nolah Nurture

Even though both mattresses are flippable, they have many differences. The Nolah, for example, feels much softer overall. The firm side feels like a 6.5/10, while the soft side feels like 5/10.

Nolah Nurture - construction

Additionally, the Nolah Natural contains entirely eco-friendly materials. In this bed, you’ll find layers of Talalay latex and premium wool. Because of this, the price point is a bit higher. (But remember: you can always save some money with our Nolah mattress coupons).

The Nolah Nurture could work for children over the age of 12, but we don’t recommend it for kids older than 15 years old.

Who Should Get The Helix Kids?

  • Families who want to save money
  • Fans of firmer mattresses

Who Should Get The Nolah Nurture?

  • People who want mattresses made entirely out of eco-friendly materials
  • Those who prefer softer mattresses.

Read our full Nolah Nurture mattress review, and check out our Nolah mattress comparisons.

Helix Kids Vs. Saatva Youth

Both mattresses are designed for kids between the ages of three and 12, and they’re both flippable! The Saatva Youth, however, has a few extra bells and whistles.

The Saatva Youth mattress is two inches taller than the Helix Kids, and it has a zoned support system. This just means that the bed feels firmer toward the center and softer near the head and foot. As a result, it can help kids keep their spines in the correct alignment throughout the night.

A close shot of the end of the Saatva Youth mattress.

The Saatva Youth doesn’t arrive compressed inside a cardboard box, so it could last a little bit longer than the Helix Kids. But because of its high-end features, the Saatva Youth costs a little bit more. Don’t forget – you can always save some money with our Saatva mattress coupons.

Who Should Get The Helix Kids?

  • People who want to save some money
  • Fans of bed-in-a-box mattresses

Who Should Get The Saatva Youth?

  • Those who want a bed with a zoned support system
  • People who want a taller mattress

Read our full Saatva Youth mattress review, and take a look at our Saatva mattress comparisons.
