Serta Arctic Mattress Firmness and Feel
It’s extremely important to evaluate a mattress’s firmness level and feel, so let’s see what the Arctic is all about.
How Firm is the Serta Arctic?
On our firmness scale, the Serta Arctic comes in at 6/10, which is slightly softer than average. For reference, 6.5/10 is the industry standard for medium-firm beds.
If you’re looking for something that feels a bit more plush, then this could be a good option for you.
Sleeping on the Serta Arctic
Because this mattress feels a bit softer than most, it works exceptionally well for side sleepers. When we rested in this sleeping position, we felt excellent pressure relief along shoulders and hips.
The Serta Arctic is also a good choice for back sleepers because it provides ample lumbar support. However, this won’t work well for most stomach sleepers.
Generally, people who rest on their stomach need firm mattresses. If a bed is too soft, your hips can sink out of alignment, which can lead to lower back pain over time.

What Does the Serta Arctic Feel Like?
The Serta Arctic mattress has a classic slow-moving memory foam feel. When you press a hand into its comfort layer, you’ll see an imprint of your palm on the bed for a few seconds before it snaps back into place.
Because of its construction, you’ll sink into the layers just a bit. This could make it difficult for some people to move around on top of this mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
On the Serta Arctic, average weight sleepers should feel quite comfortable while back and side sleeping. This mattress has a dense base foam layer, which helps sleepers get the lower back support they need. And because the top foam layers feel so plush, this mattress provides plenty of pressure point relief.
Stomach sleepers, though, won’t get the proper support on the Serta Arctic. If this is your preferred sleeping position, we recommend looking for one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Larger people should also get plenty of pressure relief and support while back and side sleeping. The high-density foam layer should prevent most people from bottoming out on this mattress. However, those who weigh more than 300lbs may need a more supportive innerspring mattress.
RELATED: Best Mattresses for Heavy People
Heavyweight stomach sleepers, across the board, probably won’t like the Serta Arctic. In this sleeping position, most people will feel their hips sink into the comfort layers. This can cause the back to crane out of its neutral alignment, which may lead to pain and tension as time goes on.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Lightweight people should find the Serta Arctic feels supportive and comfy in all three sleeping positions. Those who weigh less than 130lbs won’t compress the foam layers too much, so their backs should stay in the correct alignment no matter how they sleep. Yes, even lightweight stomach sleepers should get the proper support they need on the Serta Arctic.
Serta Arctic Mattress Construction
How does this mattress stay so cool, you may wonder? To find out, we’ll detail each layer in its construction and explain how it benefits the mattress as a whole.
Cover
The Serta Arctic has a cooling cover that helps absorb and dissipate heat. This high-tech fabric really does feel cool to the touch.
Comfort Layers
The Serta Arctic has several comfort layers, and thanks to their Reactex® System, they help sleepers stay cool. The first foam layer feels especially soft and slow moving, and best of all, it’s designed to be Serta’s most cooling comfort layer yet.
Beneath this sits a layer of Serta’s CustomFit™ HD Memory Foam. This plush material creates excellent body contouring.
For even more pressure relief, Serta added a layer of EverCool® Fuze Gel Memory Foam. The cooling gel infusion helps pull heat away from the body.
Support Layer
At the very bottom, you’ll find the Serta Foam Core. This high-density base layer gives the mattress a long lifespan, and it helps sleepers maintain the proper spinal alignment.
Mattress Height
The Serta Arctic mattress is 13.5” tall.

Serta Arctic Mattress Performance
We know that the Serta Arctic contains some high-quality comfort layers, but how does its construction aid in motion isolation, durability, and edge support? We put this bed to the test and examined just how well it performs.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
This mattress does a great job at keeping sleepers cool at night. They don’t call it the Serta Arctic for nothing! Its cover feels cool to the touch, and the foam layers help dissipate heat. If you’re a hot sleeper who loves memory foam plushness, this could be the bed for you.

Motion Transfer
Memory foam mattresses, in general, tend to isolate motion well. This also means they work well for couples because sleepers don’t notice their partner’s movements too much.
When we tested the Serta Arctic, we found it performs well when it comes to motion transfer. We placed a glass of water on the mattress, and when we pressed into the bed around it, we didn’t see a lot of disturbance in the glass.

Edge Support
The Serta Arctic contains a high-quality base foam layer, which helps it feel secure around the sides. When sitting near the edge, we noticed a bit of collapse under our hips.
However, when you’re resting near the side, you should still feel quite secure and stable. Overall, this mattress has decent edge support, especially for an all-foam bed.
Durability
Because of its high-quality foams and thick support layer, we expect the Serta Arctic to last a long time – at least 10 years.
Off-Gassing
The Serta Arctic is not a bed-in-a-box mattress, so it arrives ready for you to rest on. That also means it doesn’t emit any chemical odors! No need to worry about off-gassing with this mattress.
Noise
When we tested this mattress, we did not notice any noise. And because it doesn’t contain innersprings, we don’t expect it to squeak as time goes on.
Sex
Typically, sexual partners want a mattress that feels bouncy and responsive. The Serta Arctic is not that. Because it feels softer than average, some people might have difficulty moving around on top of it.
For this reason, we would not say this is one of the best mattresses for sex.
Company Policies
When shopping for a new mattress, it’s always valuable to look at the company’s policies. Below, we’ve highlighted the main portions of Serta’s sleep trial period, warranty information, and return policy.
Warranty Info
The Serta Arctic mattress is backed by a 10-year warranty.
Sleep Trial
Serta gives customers 120 nights to try out their mattresses within the comfort of their own homes.
Return Policy
If you aren’t happy with your mattress during the initial 120-night sleep trial period, you can return it for a full refund.
Common Serta Mattress Complaints
Serta is one of the most famous mattress brands out there, and customer’s love their friendly staff and quality products. Some people, however, complained that the Serta Arctic felt too soft for their personal preferences.
Luckily, Serta makes this bed in many different firmness levels and they offer a generous trial period. So, if you decide the plush foam version doesn’t work well, you can easily exchange it for a different model.

How Does the Serta Arctic Compare to Other Mattresses?
Even if you think the Serta Arctic is the bed for you, it’s always smart to check out the competition. We’ve compared this high-tech cooling mattress to some other well-loved models, the Sealy Posturepedic and the TEMPUR-Cloud.
Serta Arctic vs. Sealy Posturepedic
As two highly popular mattress brands, Sealy and Serta have loyal customers. It’s not surprising, then, that it can be hard to choose between the two. Let’s break down their differences.
Most notably, these two beds have different construction options. The Posturpedic Patterson, which we reviewed, is a hybrid mattress made with encased coils.
The Serta Arctic plush model is an all-foam bed, though this mattress is available as a hybrid as well.
The Posturepedic Hybrid feels firmer than the all-foam Arctic, so it works better for back sleepers. The Arctic is a great choice for side sleepers who need lots of pressure relief.
Even though both mattresses have impressive cooling features, we think the Serta Arctic wins out. But because of its unique Reactex system, the Arctic has a higher price point.
Who Should Get the Serta Arctic?
- People who want one of the best cooling mattresses
- Those who love softer beds
Who Should Get the Sealy Posturepedic?
- People who want to save a bit of money
- Those who prefer medium-firm mattresses

Serta Arctic vs. TEMPUR-Cloud
As you may have guessed, the TEMPUR-Cloud comes from renowned mattress brand, Tempurpedic. This all-foam bed may look similar to the Arctic at first glance, but there are a few notable differences.
First of all, the TEMPUR-Cloud mattress feels much firmer than the arctic, coming in at 8/10. This means it works especially well for larger people and stomach sleepers. If you rest on your side, however, we recommend the Arctic.
The TEMPUR-Cloud mattress utilizes the company’s slow-moving TEMPUR material, so you’ll gently sink into its foam comfort. This mattress doesn’t have as many high-tech cooling features, though, so it may not be the best pick for extremely hot sleepers.
Unlike the TEMPUR-Cloud, the Serta Arctic does not arrive compressed inside a cardboard box. Serta’s new mattress also costs a little more than the TEMPUR-Cloud, which is definitely something to keep in mind if you’re on a budget.
Who Should Get the Serta Arctic Mattress?
- Hot sleepers
- People who prefer soft mattresses
- Those who don’t want to wait for their mattress to off-gas and expand
Who Should Get the TEMPUR-Cloud Mattress?
- People who prefer firm mattresses
- Heavier people
- People who want to save some money

FAQs
How long will a Serta Arctic mattress last?
The Serta Arctic is backed by a 10-year warranty, and we expect it to last that entire length of time. Of course, if taken care of, this mattress could last even longer.

No, the Serta Arctic is not a flippable mattress. It is designed with high-density foam at the bottom and comfort layers on top. If you flipped it, the mattress wouldn’t provide the optimal comfort and support.
Do I need a box spring with a Serta Arctic mattress?
No! This mattress has a supportive base layer, so it’s not necessary to get a base or foundation for this bed. You can place it directly on your bed frame or platform bed.
