Sleep Number True Temp Pillow Firmness and Feel
When shopping for a pillow online, it’s essential to understand its firmness and feel. That way, you’ll have a good understanding of whether the product will work for you!
How Firm Is The Sleep Number True Temp Pillow?
This pillow feels much firmer than average, and that’s thanks to its breathable foam insert. Because it feels so supportive, the pillow isn’t likely to sag throughout the night.
Sleeping On The Sleep Number True Temp Pillow
The most comfortable pillows promote neutral alignment. This means that your ears stay in line with your shoulders and your chin aligns with your sternum. If your pillow is too lofty or too soft, you may crane your neck in an uncomfortable position, which can cause pain over time.
Because the Sleep Number True Temp Pillow is so tall, it’s a great choice for side sleepers. The thick foam insert prevents the pillow from deflating through the night, so you can easily maintain the proper alignment. The True Temp Pillow works well for most back sleepers, but smaller people may find the pillow too lofty.
Stomach sleepers, generally, need a pillow that’s completely flat. With the foam insert inside, the True Temp pillow isn’t a good match. However, when I took out the foam insert, I found this pillow to have a soft and flat feel.
If you want a truly customizable pillow, take a look at the True Temp Ultimate. This adjustable pillow comes with three different foam inserts, so you can easily create the loft you need. Need more ideas? Take a look at our list of the best pillows for every type of sleeper.
What does The Sleep Number True Temp Pillow Feel Like?
This pillow has a soft and responsive feel. Because it’s so thick and plush, it easily snaps back into place after you apply pressure. This is especially great news for side sleepers, because the pillow isn’t likely to sink throughout the night.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Average weight people will find this pillow works best while side sleeping. However, it could still work for some back sleepers. Taller people may find their head sinks deeper into the foam, keeping their ears in line with their shoulders.
To maintain the proper spinal alignment, average weight stomach sleepers will want to take the foam insert out of the pillow. This creates a soft and flat sleep surface that will help prevent neck pain.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
With the foam insert, heavyweight sleepers should feel comfortable while back and side sleeping. The pillow’s height will lift the neck off of the mattress and help keep the chin in line with the sternum.
Larger stomach sleepers will also need to take the foam insert out of the pillow. However, because this pillow wasn’t specifically designed for this, we recommend stomach sleepers consider purchasing the True Temp Ultimate pillow.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Smaller people will find the True Temp pillow is ideal for side sleeping. This pillow may be too lofty for lightweight back sleepers, but it could work well for stomach sleepers if they remove the foam insert.
Sleep Number True Temp Pillow Construction
How does Sleep Number pack so much technology into one pillow? Let’s take a deep dive into its construction to find out.
Cover
The Sleep Number True Temp Pillow has a thin and breathable cover that feels cool-to-the-touch. It’s also machine washable, so it’s easy to maintain.
Core
When you unzip the cover, you’ll find two things. First, there’s a layer of fiberfill sewn around the perimeter. This synthetic material creates plush softness.
Then, you’ll find Sleep Number’s dense foam insert. With a supportive and firm feel, the insert gives the pillow a long lifespan. And just because it’s made out of foam doesn’t mean it will trap heat. The insert has small holes throughout, which promotes airflow and breathability.
Height/Loft
Height, also known as loft, is an especially important factor to consider. Flat pillows work well for stomach sleepers, but back sleepers will want something a bit thicker. The True Temp Pillow’s loft ranges between four and five inches, so it’s especially great for side sleepers.

Sleep Number True Temp Pillow Performance
We’ve learned what the pillow feels like, but how well does it perform? Let’s take a look at the True Temp Pillow’s cooling features, care instructions, and more.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
This pillow is all about keeping sleepers cool. In addition to its thin cover and breathable foam insert, this pillow has temperature balancing technology. This means the pillow attracts moisture vapor and helps pull away heat and humidity. It adapts throughout the night, so sleepers should never wake up feeling hot or clammy.
Off-Gassing
Online mattresses often emit a slight chemical smell when they expand. In the mattress business, we call this off-gassing. However, consumers won’t have to worry about any strange smells coming from the Sleep Number pillow. You can take this pillow straight from the box to your bed.
Care Instructions
The True Temp Pillow has a machine washable cover, so it’s easy to care for. Sleep Number recommends customers wash the cover separately in cold water with mild detergent. You can tumble dry the cover, but you cannot iron or bleach it.
If you happen to get the foam dirty, you can spot clean it with warm water and mild detergent. For best results, let the foam air dry away from direct sunlight.
Allergies
The Sleep Number True Temp Pillow is made with hypoallergenic materials, so it’s a great choice for those who frequently suffer from allergies.

Sleep Number True Temp Pillow vs Purple Harmony Pillow
Like their mattresses, Purple’s Harmony pillow is made with their proprietary gel grid. This one-of-a-kind material feels both squishy and firm, so it creates a supportive surface that’s suitable for a variety of different sleepers.
However, unlike the original Purple Pillow, the Harmony only utilizes this material in the cover. Beneath this sits a layer of Talalay latex foam. This gives the pillow a responsive feel.
The Purple Harmony Pillow is about two inches taller than the Sleep Number True Temp. Because of this, The Purple Harmony is better suited for larger side sleepers. Average and lightweight side sleepers will prefer the Sleep Number True Temp.
The Purple Harmony Pillow costs a bit more than the Sleep Number, but it does have a longer sleep trial period and more lenient return policy. This pillow is available on Purple’s website and on Amazon.

The Sleep Number True Temp Pillow, on the other hand, has many cooling features that help dissipate heat. It’s a loftier pillow, so it will better suit side sleepers.
