Zinus Hybrid Mattress Firmness And Feel

When it comes to finding the ideal mattress, two of the most important factors to consider are firmness and feel. Let’s take a look at what it’s like to sleep on the Zinus Hybrid.

How Firm Is The Zinus Hybrid?

We ranked the Zinus Hybrid a 6/10 on our firmness scale, which is a half point softer than the industry standard for medium-firm beds.

It’s important to note that a person’s body type can impact how they feel on top of a mattress. For example, lightweight people might think the Zinus feels like a 5.5/10 because they won’t compress the top layers very much. Heavier people may think the Zinus feels firmer because they sink into the comfort layers and feel more of the support coils underneath.

Sleeping On The Zinus Hybrid Mattress

When I rested on my back, I felt a great balance of comfort and support. The memory foam layer contoured my body, and the coils helped keep my hips aligned with my spine.

A man sleeps on his side on the Zinus mattress

I felt nice pressure relief while side sleeping. The thick comfort layer cradled my shoulder and hip, which is just what I need in this sleeping position.

The Zinus Hybrid mattress isn’t a great choice for stomach sleepers, though. In this sleeping position, I felt my hips sink out of alignment, which caused some lower back pain. If this is your preferred sleeping position, I recommend checking out our list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

What Does The Zinus Hybrid Feel Like?

While the Zinus Hybrid does contain coils, the thick memory foam comfort layer gives it a classic memory foam feel. It allows sleepers to sink into the comfort layer, and it gently contours the body. However, because it has a slow-moving feel, it’s not super easy to move around on top of this mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

The Zinus Hybrid is a great match for most average weight back sleepers, because it offers a nice balance of pressure relief and spinal support. It’s also a good fit for average weight side sleepers. Most average weight stomach sleepers will find this mattress isn’t supportive enough.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

The Zinus Hybrid is a decent match for heavier back sleepers who weigh about 230 lb. That said, the mattress might not be supportive enough for folks who are much heavier.

Heavyweight side sleepers might feel too much pressure on this mattress, because they could press through the softer memory foam into the firmer support layers underneath. This mattress is not supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

The Zinus Hybrid is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, because it balances spinal support and pressure relief. Its thick comfort layer also offers plenty of comfort for lightweight side sleepers. It’s possible the mattress could be supportive enough for lightweight stomach sleepers, but most stomach sleepers will want to look for a firmer bed.

Zinus Cooling Copper Adaptive Hybrid Mattress Construction

Now that we have an understanding of what it feels like to lie on top of the Zinus, let’s take a look at what’s inside of it! We’ll review the bed’s construction below, and in the next section we’ll assess how that construction affects its performance.

Layer

Description

Cover

The cover, made from soft fabric, has Adaptive Technology that helps regulate temperature and wick away moisture.

Comfort Layer #1

The first comfort layer is made up of 2″ of copper-infused memory foam. This layer is cooling and antimicrobial.

Comfort Layer #2

The second comfort layer acts as a transition layer between the soft memory foam above and the firm coils below. It’s made from 0.5″ of high-density foam.

Support Layers

The Zinus Hybrid’s support layer is made from pocketed coils, which are wrapped individually to promote body contouring. The individually wrapped coils also help cut down on motion transfer across the surface of the bed.

Beneath the coils, there’s a 0.5″ layer of high-density foam that provides support and structure for the mattress overall.

Mattress Height

The Zinus Cooling Copper Adaptive Hybrid comes in two heights: 10″ and 12″. We reviewed the 12″ model.

Zinus Hybrid Mattress Performance

Alright, it’s time to put this mattress to the test! We assessed this bed’s performance with regard to a variety of factors, including motion transfer, edge support, durability, and more. Let’s see how it did.

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

The Zinus Hybrid does a decent job of sleeping cool. Its Adaptive cover helps dissipate heat and wick moisture away from the surface of the mattress. The copper infusion in the memory foam layer also supports heat dissipation, and the pocketed coils promote airflow. All of these features contribute to a cooler, more comfortable night’s sleep.

Make sure to check out our list of the best cooling mattresses for more like the Zinus.

Motion Transfer

In our experience, the Zinus Cooling Copper Hybrid isolated motion quite well. The thick memory foam layer and the individually wrapped pocketed coils absorb motion so that there’s barely any disturbance across the surface of the bed. This could be a great mattress for couples who don’t want to disturb each other during the night.

Edge Support

The Zinus Hybrid features an extra layer of thick foam around the edges, which is meant to enhance its edge support. However, in my experience, the edges collapsed when I sat down or rested near the edge of the bed. For that reason, I didn’t give this mattress high marks when it comes to edge support.

Zinus Hybrid - Edge Support

Durability

Because it’s a value mattress, the Zinus Hybrid won’t last as long as other beds on the market. We expect it to last about five years, while other hybrid mattresses can last up to a decade.

Off-Gassing

When I unboxed the Zinus Hybrid mattress, I noticed a slight chemical smell. However, after two days, the smell faded away

Noise

This mattress isn’t very noisy at all. Even though it has coils, I didn’t hear any squeaking sounds.

Sex

When people seek out a mattress for sex, they’re usually concerned about whether it will be easy to move around on top of the bed. Based on that criterion, the Zinus Hybrid might not be the best match. It’s a bit hard to move around due to the enveloping memory foam.

Company Policies

If you’re interested in buying a Zinus Hybrid mattress, you might want to learn more about the fine print. I’ll break down Zinus’s company policies for you below!

A warranty is important to have in case your mattress has any defects down the road that are a result of manufacturing flaws. How Does The Zinus Hybrid Compare To Other Mattresses?

When shopping for any mattress, it’s always a good idea to compare it to other options. In the online mattress world, other popular brands include Casper and Nectar. Let’s see how these beds compare to the Zinus Hybrid.

Zinus Hybrid vs Original Casper

The Casper original mattress is one of the most popular online mattresses around. One of the primary differences between the original Casper and the Zinus Hybrid lies in their construction.

While the Zinus layers memory foam over pocketed coils, the original Casper is made entirely out of foam. The Casper mattress also has a zoned support system, which makes the mattress feel firmer toward the center and softer near the head and the foot. This helps sleepers maintain the proper spinal alignment and alleviate lower back pain.

A mattress is opened to show its layers.

These mattresses also differ in terms of feel. The Zinus has a slow-moving memory foam feel that cradles sleepers “inside” the mattress. The Casper has a balanced foam feel, meaning sleepers won’t sink quite as deeply into the bed.

When it comes to firmness, the Casper and Zinus Hybrid are distinctly different. We ranked the Zinus Hybrid at 6/10 and the original Casper at 7/10. The Zinus Hybrid is notably softer than the Casper.

Finally, these mattresses differ significantly in terms of price. The Zinus Hybrid is more affordable than the Casper, but it may not last as long.

Who Should Get The Zinus Hybrid?

  • Those looking to save money
  • Those who like a classic memory foam feel
  • Side sleepers who need plenty of pressure relief

Who Should Get The Casper?

  • Those who want a more substantial, luxury mattress
  • Folks who prefer a more responsive mattress
  • Back sleepers who need lumbar support

Zinus Hybrid vs Nectar

Nectar is another popular bed-in-a-box brand. The flagship Nectar mattress differs dramatically from the Zinus Hybrid when it comes to construction. While the Zinus Hybrid mattress features coils in its base layer, the Nectar is made completely out of foam.

Even though they’re constructed differently, the Nectar and Zinus Hybrid are fairly similar when it comes to feel. They both have a slow-moving, memory foam feel that offers body contouring and pressure relief.

A cross-section shot of the Nectar Classic Hybrid

When it comes to firmness, we ranked the Zinus Hybrid around a 6/10 and the Nectar around a 6.5/10. This means the Zinus is a touch softer than the Nectar.

Who Should Get The Zinus Hybrid?

  • Folks who want to save money
  • People who want a softer mattress
  • People who want a mattress with coils

Who Should Get The Nectar?

  • Those who want a more durable mattress
  • Folks who want a memory foam mattress that’s a touch firmer
  • Combination sleepers

Zinus Hybrid Mattress FAQs

Still have questions about the Zinus Cooling Copper Adaptive Hybrid? We’ve got answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about this mattress.

Is Zinus a good mattress?

Yep! This is a high-quality value mattress with cooling features. It works well for hot sleepers, bargain hunters, and people who like a memory foam feel.

Can you flip a Zinus mattress?

No. The mattress is constructed with memory foam on top and coils below that, so flipping it would result in sleeping on the harder support layers instead of memory foam.

How long will a Zinus mattress last?

This isn’t a particularly long-lasting mattress, but it should last for approximately five years.

Is the Zinus mattress good for back pain?

It could be. It offers a nice balance of support and comfort in several sleeping positions. However, some folks might find that it’s a bit too soft to adequately support their back.
