Who Might Not Like The Helix Moonlight?

• While the soft feeling is great for side sleepers, this mattress won’t offer enough support for stomach sleepers.

Helix Moonlight Mattress Firmness And Feel

When you’re looking for a new mattress, firmness and feel should be top of mind. These factors will majorly affect whether a particular mattress suits your sleep position and other preferences. So let’s kick off the in-depth portion of this review with a look at the Helix Moonlight’s firmness and feel!

How Firm Is The Helix Moonlight?

After testing the Moonlight, I ranked the Helix Moonlight around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. For reference, the industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests the Helix Moonlight is a bit softer-than-average. This makes sense when you remember that the Helix Moonlight is one of the softest models in the Helix lineup.

Firmness measurements are somewhat subjective, so it’s worth noting that your assessment might vary a bit depending on your body weight and preferences. But most people should agree that this mattress is on the softer side.

Sleeping On The Helix Moonlight

When it came time for testing, I started on my back. I felt okay but not great Helix Moonlight in this position. My hips were at risk of bowing into the mattress. If you spend all night in this position, I suggest looking for a firmer mattress that offers more spinal support. For example, take a look at the Helix Midnight or Helix Dusk.

Because this is a soft mattress, I found the Helix Moonlight to be a fantastic while on my side. I didn’t experience any pressure around the shoulder or hip, which are common hot spots for side sleepers.

The Helix Moonlight is simply not supportive enough for stomach sleeping. My hips sank too far into the mattress and pulled my spine out of alignment. Strict stomach sleepers will want to seek out a dedicated mattress for stomach sleeping such as the Helix Dawn or Helix Twilight.

What Does The Helix Moonlight Feel Like?

Given that the Helix Moonlight is fairly soft, you might expect it to have a plush, slow-moving feel. But in reality, the Helix Moonlight has a surprisingly bouncy feel. It should be easy to move around on top of this mattress. Let’s give a brief overview on how this mattress works for different body types before going into further detail.

Is the Helix Moonlight Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 lb – 230 lb)?

• The Helix Moonlight could be a decent match for average-weight back sleepers, particularly those who are on the lighter end of the weight spectrum. But definitely look at something a bit firmer if you want more lumbar support.
• This bed is an excellent fit for side sleepers, who should enjoy plenty of pressure relief thanks to the mattress’s soft comfort layers.
• This mattress is almost certainly too soft for average-weight stomach sleepers.

Is the Helix Moonlight Good for Heavyweight Sleepers (over 230 lb)?

• Heavyweight back sleepers are unlikely to obtain adequate support on the Helix Moonlight, and they’ll probably prefer a dedicated mattress for heavy people.
• Side sleepers who weigh less than 300 pounds should enjoy plenty of pressure relief, while folks who weigh more than that could find that they press through the soft comfort layers and feel jammed up on the firmer support layer underneath.
• This mattress is not at all supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers.

Is the Helix Moonlight Good for Lightweight Sleepers (under 130 lb)?

• Lightweight back sleepers could obtain adequate support on the Helix Moonlight.
• Lightweight side sleepers should find this mattress to be a pressure-relieving dream.
• The Helix Moonlight is not supportive enough even for lightweight stomach sleepers.

Now that you know what it’s like to sleep on top of the Helix Moonlight, let’s peel back this bed’s cover and take a look inside. I’ll detail each layer of this mattress’s construction and share how different materials influence performance and feel.

Cover

The Helix Moonlight comes with a Breathe Knit cover which allows for some good airflow through the top of the mattress. You can also upgrade to a GlacioTex™ Cooling Pillow Top if you want some more plushness and cooling.

Comfort Layers

The primary comfort layer on the Helix Moonlight consists of the Helix brand’s proprietary Helix Dynamic Foam—a latex-foam alternative that is bouncy, responsive and a bit pressure-relieving. Underneath the main comfort layer, there are two layers of Helix Responsive Foam. Both have a soft feel and add some more plushness to the top of the mattress. The lower layer of Helix Responsive Foam also acts as a transition layer to keep you from bottoming out on the mattress.

Support Layer

Like all the models in Helix’s hybrid line, the Helix Moonlight features a support layer made from individually-wrapped coils. These coils rest on DuraDense Foam which lends structure and support to the mattress overall.

Helix Moonlight Mattress Performance

At this point in the review, you know a lot about the Helix Moonlight’s firmness, feel and construction. All of those are critical components of a mattress, but they’re also not the whole story. I put the Helix Moonlight through a barrage of tests to assess its performance with regards to temperature regulation, edge support, motion transfer and more. Let’s see how it did!

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

The Helix Moonlight boasts several design features to help it sleep cool: namely, a breathable cover and coils, which allow for airflow throughout the entire mattress. This bed shouldn’t trap much heat. But if you’re still worried about overheating, you can upgrade to the Luxe model to get even more cooling features.

Motion Transfer

Given that the Helix Moonlight is a very bouncy mattress, it’s probably not surprising that it doesn’t minimize motion transfer particularly well. While it’s not terrible, the bounciness of the bed does carry some movement across the surface of the mattress. Keep this in mind if you’re looking for a mattress for couples.

Edge Support

The Helix Moonlight boasts strong edge support thanks in large part to its support layer of coils. I felt secure while lying down near the edge of this mattress.

Durability

This should be a longer-lasting mattress thanks to the inclusion of high-density foams and durable coils.

Off-Gassing

We did observe some initial off-gassing from the Helix Moonlight. This should dissipate within a few days.

Noise

At the time of this review, we observed just a tiny bit of noise from the Helix Moonlight’s coils. It’s possible this noise could get louder as time goes on.

Sex

When people seek out a mattress for sex, they’re usually concerned with being able to change positions easily. The Helix Moonlight is a great match in this regard because its bouncy and responsive nature makes it easy to move around on top of the bed. Partners shouldn’t feel stuck in this mattress.
