- The Purple is more breathable than the Puffy Lux, which helps it sleep cooler at night

Firmness and Feel Differences (Including Firmness Rating)
Alright, let’s get down to brass tacks. In the next few sections, we’ll take a closer look at the differences between the Puffy Lux and the OG Purple as they relate to firmness and feel.
How Firm Are the Puffy Lux and Purple Mattresses?
We ranked both the Puffy Lux and the Purple around a 6.5 out of 10; the industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5, so both of these beds are right around medium-firm.
Note that firmness is somewhat subjective; depending on a person’s weight and body type, they might rank these mattresses a touch differently.
Sleeping on the Puffy Lux and Purple Mattresses
Puffy Lux
We felt good while back sleeping on the Puffy Lux – it provided adequate spinal support along with plenty of body contouring and pressure relief.
Moving to our side on the Puffy Lux, we enjoyed lots of pressure relief around the shoulder and hip thanks to the soft memory foam. Overall, the Puffy Lux provided more pressure relief than the Purple mattress.
While stomach sleeping on the Puffy Lux, we didn’t feel quite enough support under the hips; they bowed into the mattress a bit, which throws the spine out of alignment. Strict stomach sleepers will want to look for a firmer mattress.
Purple
In our experience, the Purple is one of the absolute best mattresses for back sleepers. The gel grid collapses a bit under the butt and hips for some pressure relief, while the rest of the mattress stays supportive – this promotes healthy spinal alignment.
While side sleeping on the Purple, our heavier-weight reviewer found that his body activated the gel grid, which collapsed under the pressure points to create cradling relief. That being said, lighter-weight sleepers might find the grid stays firmer and doesn’t provide as much comfort.
The Purple provided adequate support while stomach sleeping; it kept the hips elevated and aligned with the spine, which created neutral spinal alignment.
What Do the Puffy Lux and Purple Mattresses Feel Like?
The Puffy Lux has a pretty classic memory foam feel: It contours the body, allows sleepers to sink into the mattress, and has a slow-moving response to pressure. Because of this, it’s not super easy to move around on this mattress, and some people might feel stuck at night.
The Purple has a squishy-but-firm feel that is very responsive and bouncy. It’s easy to move around on this bed, and we had no issue repositioning during the night.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
The Puffy Lux should provide a balance of spinal support and pressure-relieving comfort for average-weight back sleepers. Side sleepers who weigh less than 200 pounds should enjoy better pressure relief on the Puffy Lux than on the Purple – folks who weigh more than that will probably feel better pressure relief on the Purple. The Puffy Lux mattress is probably not supportive enough for average-weight stomach sleepers.
The Purple’s supportive nature should make it a decent match for average-weight back sleepers. Again, it won’t provide a ton of pressure relief for side sleepers who weigh less than 200 pounds; folks in this category might find that the Purple feels too firm in this position. The Purple mattress should offer decent support and spinal alignment for average-weight stomach sleepers.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
Folks who are close to 230 pounds should find enough support while back sleeping on the Puffy Lux (much more than that, and they’ll find that the Purple is better able to support the extra weight). Heavyweight side sleepers might press through the Puffy Lux’s comfort layers to the firmer base layer, causing them to feel some pressure in this position. The Puffy Lux is not supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers.
Heavyweight back sleepers should enjoy decent spinal support on the Purple mattress. Heavier side sleepers will activate the Purple’s gel grid, which means it will collapse around hot spots and offer nice pressure relief while side sleeping. The Purple might be supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers who are closer to 230 pounds, but many heavyweight sleepers will find that they need a more supportive mattress for this sleep position.
Make sure to take a look at our list of the best mattresses for heavy people.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
The Puffy Lux is a great match for lightweight back sleepers, who will enjoy a balance of pressure relief and spinal support. The mattress is also well suited to lightweight side sleepers because the soft memory foam is very pressure-relieving. It’s probably not supportive enough for lightweight people who are strict stomach sleepers.
Lightweight back sleepers might find that the Purple feels too firm, because they won’t activate the gel grid enough to enjoy pressure relief (the same goes for lightweight side sleepers). The Purple’s supportive nature might make it a good match for lightweight stomach sleepers.
Mattress Construction Differences
Now that we have an in-depth understanding of what it’s like to sleep on top of the Puffy Lux and Purple mattresses, let’s take a closer look at what’s inside of them. We’ll review the beds’ materials and talk about how this affects their overall performance.
Cover
The Puffy Lux has a stretchy cover that’s thin and breathable. The Purple is surrounded by a SoftFlex cover that is soft, breathable, and flexible enough to move with the Purple’s gel grid.
Comfort Layers
The Puffy Lux’s main comfort layer is a Cooling Cloud layer that has the slow-moving feel of memory foam and is infused with gel to help with cooling. Below the Cooling Cloud layer, there’s a Plush Dual Cloud layer, which contours the body and helps reduce pressure. Finally, there’s a Climate Control transition layer that is firmer and more responsive than the layers above; this layer adds some bounce to the mattress and helps regulate temperature.
The top layer of the Purple consists of 2″ of the brand’s proprietary Purple Grid, which is made from a hyper-elastic gel polymer. This unique material is bouncy and firm until enough pressure is applied, at which point the grid collapses to offer pressure relief. A thick foam encasement surrounds the top comfort layer and provides extra edge support for sleepers.
Support Layer
The Puffy Lux’s Firm Core Support base layer consists of a firm-set layer of foam. The brand says this layer is firmer and more supportive than competitors’ base layers.
Beneath the Purple’s comfort layer, there’s a foam transition layer and, underneath that, there is a base layer made of firm support foam.
Mattress Height
The Puffy Lux mattress 12″ thick, while the Purple is shorter at 9.5″ tall.

Puffy Lux vs. Purple Performance Differences
We put the Puffy Lux and Purple mattresses through a range of tests to see how they perform when it comes to cooling, edge support, motion transfer, and more – let’s see how they did!
Sleeping Hot or Cold
The Purple wins out here, as it’s much more breathable; the gel grid allows for plenty of airflow through the mattress and creates a temperature-neutral sleeping experience.
Motion Transfer
The Puffy Lux is the clear winner in this category. The memory foam on top absorbs motion and helps minimize disturbance across the mattress, which could make this a good mattress for couples. The bouncier Purple doesn’t isolate motion as well as the Puffy Lux mattress.
Edge Support
Both the Puffy Lux and the Purple offer decent edge support. In addition, the Purple has an extra wrap-around layer that’s expressly designed to shore up its edges.
Durability
We expect the Purple to be the winner here as its gel grid is extra durable.
Off-Gassing
We witnessed some off-gassing from the Puffy Lux, which dissipated after 48 hours. We didn’t observe any notable off-gassing from the Purple mattress.
Noise
We’ll call this a tie a wee didn’t observe any notable noise from either mattress.
Sex
Folks who are considering a mattress for sex are typically concerned with how easy it is to move around on the mattress. For that reason, we ranked the Purple as the winner of this category – it’s bouncier and more responsive, so it’s easier to move around on top of the mattress.
Warranty Info
The Puffy Lux mattress comes with a lifetime warranty and a 101-night sleep trial. The Purple mattress comes with a 10-year warranty and a 100-night trial.
