Layla Mattress Video Review
There’s a lot going on with the Layla, so check out our video to see how it looks in action!
Layla Mattress Review: General Overview
The Layla is really known for its flippable design; it features a soft side that offers excellent pressure relief and a firm side that offers great support. However, the Layla is more than just a flippable gimmick—it is also an extremely comfortable memory foam mattress that boasts some great cooling features.
There is a lot going on with the Layla mattress and, with its flippable design, it is a good fit for multiple sleeping positions. Here’s a quick overview of the mattress’s pros and cons:
Pros of the Layla Mattress
- It’s a soft and comfortable mattress that offers lots of pressure relief. This is particularly beneficial for side sleepers who need some cushioning along their shoulders and hips.
- The slow-moving foam helps alleviate pressure on joints, which can ease hip pain.
- It’s made with copper gel foam, which is both cooling and antimicrobial.
- The firm side of the mattress is good for many back and stomach sleepers.
Cons of the Layla Mattress
- It lacks a classic medium-firm feel. The soft side feels quite plush, while the firm side is very supportive. If you want a mattress that offers a nice balance, you may want to look at our list of the best medium-firm mattresses.
- Heavier stomach sleepers won’t get the necessary hip support on the Layla mattress.
- Sleepers who don’t like to sink into their mattress too far. If you want a responsive and bouncy mattress, you may want to consider getting the Layla Hybrid instead.

Layla Mattress Firmness and Feel
The Layla mattress is interesting because it is flippable and has two firmnesses in one. Let’s take a look at both sides of this mattress, how firm they are and what they feel like.
How Firm Is the Layla Mattress?
The soft side of the Layla is softer than average mattresses, coming in at 6/10 on our firmness scale. For reference, 6.5/10 represents the industry standard of medium-firm. The firm side of the mattress has a thinner layer of memory foam on top followed by a supportive base layer. This makes the firm side of the mattress feel like an 8/10 on our scale.

Sleeping on the Layla Mattress
The Soft Side
When I rested on my back on the soft side of the Layla, I didn’t get the proper support. I’m a heavier person who is 6’7,” and I felt myself sinking through the mattress quite a bit. However, I felt very comfortable when I switched to my side. The plush comfort layer cushioned my shoulder and hip, and I didn’t feel any pain or discomfort. I think it is one of the best mattresses for neck and shoulder pain. The soft side of the Layla is entirely too soft for stomach sleeping. I didn’t get enough support under my hips in this sleeping position.
The Firm Side
Back sleeping on the firm side of the Layla, I felt a good balance of comfort and support. My hips sank into the memory foam layer, but the support layer prevented my back from craning out of alignment. I didn’t get enough pressure relief when I slept on my side, but I felt plenty of hip support when I switched to my stomach.
What Does the Layla Mattress Feel Like?
Overall, the Layla mattress has a slow-moving memory foam feel. The feel differs depending on which side you’re sleeping on, though. Most people will sink pretty far into the soft side of the mattress. But when you flip it over, you should feel like you’re resting “on top” of the mattress.
Soft Side
Sleeper Weight | Back Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight (Under 130 lb) | Excellent | Good | Good |
Average (130 – 230 lb) | Good | Excellent | Bad |
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb) | Bad | Fair | Bad |
Firm Side
Sleeper Weight | Back Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight (Under 130 lb) | Excellent | Fair | Excellent |
Average (130 – 230 lb) | Excellent | Fair | Good |
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb) | Excellent | Fair | Good |
Is the Layla Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?
- Both sides of the Layla mattress work well for lightweight back sleepers. People who weigh less than 130 lb won’t compress the top foam layers too much, so they will get the lumbar support they need.
- Lightweight side sleepers will feel more comfortable on the soft side of the Layla mattress. That’s because this side offers more pressure relief for the shoulders and hips. On the firm side, many lightweight side sleepers may feel some pain along pressure points.
- The soft side could work well for lightweight stomach sleepers, but the firm side is much better. The firm side offers more hip support, which will help lightweight stomach sleepers maintain the proper spinal alignment.
Is the Layla Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?
- Average weight people should feel comfortable on both sides of the Layla mattress, but the firm side is slightly better. That’s because the firm side offers more lumbar support, which can help average weight back sleepers maintain the proper spinal alignment. Back sleepers who weigh closer to 230 lb may feel their spines craning out of alignment while resting on the soft side.
- The soft side of the Layla mattress works well for average weight side sleepers. Its plush feel helps cushion shoulders and hips, while the supportive foam layer promotes the proper spinal alignment. The firm side of the mattress won’t offer enough pressure relief for average weight side sleepers.
- Average weight stomach sleepers will feel more supported on the firm side of the mattress. If people in this category slept on the soft side, they would feel their hips sink out of alignment and could develop lower back pain.
Is the Layla Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?
- Heavyweight back sleepers should sleep on the firm side of the Layla mattress. That’s because this side offers more lumbar support. The soft side could cause some heavyweight back sleepers to “bottom out” and develop lower back pain.
- As a whole, the Layla mattress isn’t a great option for heavyweight side sleepers–it could cause some hip and shoulder pain.
- The firm side of the Layla mattress is a decent option for heavyweight stomach sleepers, but many people will still need something firmer. The soft side of the Layla mattress won’t offer enough lumbar support for heavyweight stomach sleepers. Take a look at our list of the best mattresses for heavy people for some better options.
Layla Mattress Construction
Let’s take a closer look at what materials are found in the Layla and what they do for the overall mattress experience. We will look at each layer of this flippable mattress one by one.
Cover
The Layla mattress has a soft cooling cover that’s woven in a hexagon pattern. It has a zipper around the sides, so you can easily remove it.
Comfort Layers
On the soft side, the first comfort layer is made with copper-gel memory foam. Copper has antimicrobial and cooling properties, and gel helps dissipate body heat. This material has a slow-moving feel that allows sleepers to gently sink into it. Beneath this is a layer of Max Airflow Support Foam, which acts as a transition layer and helps prevent sleepers from “bottoming out.”
Support Layer
Next, there’s a layer of high-density support foam. This helps provide lumbar support and keep sleepers’ spines in a neutral alignment.
Comfort Layer (Firm Side)
Underneath the support layer sits a thinner piece of foam. When the Layla mattress is placed firm side up, this acts as the comfort layer. It’s infused with copper and gel, which helps dissipate body heat, and it feels quite firm and supportive.
Mattress Height
The Layla mattress is 10.5″ tall

Layla Mattress Performance
We put the Layla mattress to the test and measured its motion transfer, cooling and other features. Read on to see how the Layla performed.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
The Layla is an all-foam mattress so, no matter what, it is going to sleep hotter than most innerspring and hybrid mattresses. That said, the Layla sleeps cooler than most memory foam mattresses because of its copper-gel infusion. These materials help draw heat away from the body and help keep the top of the mattress cool.
Motion Transfer
When it comes to motion transfer, few materials handle it as well as memory foam, and because of this, the Layla performed quite well during my motion transfer tests.
When I placed a glass of water on the soft side of the Layla mattress, I could press into the surrounding area without disturbing the water too much. I did see some more disturbance when I did this test on the firm side, but not too much.
I also asked my coworker to move around on the opposite of the mattress when I rested on it. I barely felt his movements come over to my side of the bed, which makes me think this is a good mattress for couples.
Edge Support
Because the Layla is an all-foam mattress, it does not have excellent edge support. When I sat down on the edge of the soft side, the mattress collapsed quite a bit. When I sat on the firm side, it didn’t collapse as much, but I didn’t feel particularly secure. When I rested on both sides of the Layla mattress, I felt like I could easily roll off the edge.
Durability
The Layla mattress contains high-quality foam layers, and I expect it to last between seven and 10 years, which is typical for an all-foam bed.
Off-gassing
When I first took the Layla mattress out of its box, there was some mattress off-gassing. However, I left the mattress in a ventilated room for 48 hours, and the smell completely went away.
Noise
When I moved around on top of the Layla, the mattress made almost no noise. This is usually a bigger issue with hybrid and innerspring mattresses, and I don’t usually have this problem with all-foam mattresses like the Layla.
Sex
Those who need a mattress for sex usually want to find a responsive, bouncy mattress; they want something that makes it easy to move around and reposition. Because the Layla contains soft memory foam that is not too responsive, it might not be the best mattress for sex.
Layla Company Policies
Tired of your old mattress and considering purchasing something new? We will walk you through Layla’s company policies. You never know, the fine print may have a bigger impact on your purchase decision than expected.
Warranty
The Layla mattress comes with lifetime warranty that covers sagging, loss of shape, splitting or cracking of the foam and loss of mattress height. Important note: The warranty only applies if you purchase the mattress directly from Layla’s website.
Sleep Trial
The Layla mattress comes with a 120-night trial, which should give your body plenty of time to adjust to the new mattress. You will have up to four months to decide whether or not you want to keep it.
Return Policy
If you still don’t love your Layla mattress after trying it for at least two weeks, Layla will work with you to donate the mattress to a local charity—as long as it’s still within the 120-night trial period. You will receive a full refund for the Layla mattress upon providing donation documentation.
Layla Mattress Complaints
On Layla’s website, there are over 7,000 customer reviews. Most of them are positive, but a few customers said the mattress isn’t firm enough. Other people complained about the edge support and said they felt like they would roll off the side of the mattress.

The main difference between the Layla and Layla Hybrid can be found in the support layer—the Layla features base foam, and the Layla Hybrid features support coils. Even with this construction difference, the mattresses are close in terms of firmness and feel. They both have a soft side and a firm side, and they both have a slow-moving feel.
The Layla Hybrid does have some advantages over the Layla mattress because, with coils in its support layer, the Hybrid is more breathable, supportive and durable than the Layla mattress. However, these improvements do put the Layla Hybrid at higher price point.
