When you hear the word “Cloud,” certain images come to mind – you might imagine a floating, fluffy castle in a blue sky. So it’s understandable that I had certain expectations when it came to the Puffy Cloud – a comfortable mattress that would let me drift away. And this seems to be the image they are going for — but does it live up to all the fanfare?
I was excited to see just how puffy the Puffy Cloud mattress stacked up against the hundreds of other mattresses we’ve tested. Read my unbiased review to find out if it performed up to par. Hint: if you’re a back or side sleeper, this might be the memory foam bed for you — and if you’re a stomach sleeper, stay far, far away.

I Recommend The Puffy Cloud For…
- Fans of a balanced foam feel. The Puffy Cloud features a thin layer of slow moving foam on top, with a thicker transition layer which makes the bed responsive and bouncy.
- Light- and average weight side and back sleepers. These folks should find enough comfort and support from the bed’s foam layers.
I Don’t Recommend The Puffy Cloud For…
- Stomach sleepers. Although the Puffy Cloud is firmer than the standard medium-firmness, it is not firm enough to be a good mattress for stomach sleepers.
- Heavy sleepers. Sleepers over 230 lbs should look for a mattress with a coil support system and thicker comfort layers. Head over and check out our list of the best mattresses for heavy people for some better options.
Puffy Cloud Performance Test: Overall Rating
Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches personally test each mattress in a total of seven different performance categories. It’s worth noting that the Puffy Cloud scored well in cooling and motion transfer, and got a perfect score for edge support. Somewhere else it shined, though, were its policies: high marks for a generous trial period and warranty.

Support – 3/5
Memory foam mattresses tend to offer a balance of comfort and support, and I’d say that this is the case for the Puffy Cloud. I tested out each position on this mattress and found that back-sleeping was the best for me, no doubt thanks to its cushy but firm profile.
Pressure buildup, for the most part, should be relieved when laying on the Puffy Cloud. But when I was laying on my side, I did feel some pressure on our shoulders and hips; the top comfort layer is not extremely thick on the Puffy Cloud mattress. A good deal of side sleepers (especially those of a lighter weight) could feel some significant pressure when they are side sleeping on the Puffy Cloud, and this could make for an uncomfortable night of sleep.
Edge Support – 3.5/5
This is another important consideration for couples and those who like to sleep all the way toward the edge of their mattress. First off, I sat near the edge of the Puffy Cloud mattress, and I did feel it sagging underneath our weight. Lying down, the edge of the mattress only collapsed a bit, but I didn’t feel like I was going to fall off the mattress.
Overall, the Puffy Cloud’s edges sank a total of 5” during testing. This metric is a little more noticeable than the average mattress, but you won’t be sliding off the bed.
Cooling – 4/5
This Puffy model features an all-foam construction as well as memory foam in its top layers. Usually, when I see a mattress with this setup, I expect it to sleep somewhat hot. All-foam mattresses don’t leave much room for airflow, and memory foam is specifically known for trapping body heat. That being said, the Puffy Cloud features a breathable cover and a cooling gel infusion in the top layer of memory foam to combat this.
Putting the Puffy Cloud mattress to the test, I used a heat gun to measure whether this bed trapped or released heat. The initial temperature (without me laying on it) was about 74 F, and after five minutes of laying on it, I recorded a temperature of 79 F. This five-degree increase is pretty good for a memory foam mattress. In terms of how I felt, this bed doesn’t sleep as hot as some other memory foam mattresses we’ve tried, but it might not be cool enough for those who have a habit of overheating at night.
Motion Transfer – 4/5
Motion transfer is something all couples should keep in mind when they are choosing a mattress. A mattress that cuts down on motion transfer will allow both partners to sleep soundly on their respective sides of the mattress. If it doesn’t – well, get ready for a poor night of sleep.
The Puffy Cloud has some slow-moving memory foam right on top, and this material is known for absorbing motion quite well. So, we were not surprised that we didn’t see too much motion transfer on the Puffy Cloud mattress. As you can see below, the cup stays upright even as we press down on the other side of the mattress.
Response – 3.5/5
The Puffy Cloud mattress features a soft foam feel, but it’s also bouncy and responsive. While the mattress boasts a layer of slow-moving memory foam on top, it is not too thick. I mostly felt the bounce of the transition layer, and this makes it easy to move around and switch positions at night.
As far as foam mattresses go, it’s bouncier than you might expect, but not as springy as a mattress with coils. Still, it could work for combination sleepers or sexually active shoppers who are looking for a foam mattress.
Durability – 3/5
Considering its materials and all-foam construction, the Puffy Cloud should be a reasonably durable mattress. Memory foam is at risk for sagging if it’s not backed up by strong support, which the Puffy Cloud thankfully is.
The bed’s overall longevity will, of course, depend on how often it is used and how heavy the sleeper is, but it should last for at least five to seven years.
Stomach sleeping, the Puffy Cloud is not supportive enough, especially under my hips. My center mass dipped into the mattress, and I could feel some growing pain in my lower back.
Puffy Cloud Policy Score
Trial Period – 5/5
A 101-night sleep trial will allow you to test your new Puffy mattress in the comfort of your own home. Learn more about the sleep trial on Puffy’s website.
If for any reason you decide that the Puffy Cloud mattress isn’t the right fit for you within the 101-night sleep trial (after two weeks of trying it out), Puffy will schedule a free return and provide a full refund. Wondering what will happen to your used Puffy mattress? Puffy will donate it to charity.
Warranty – 5/5
You may rest assured knowing that your new Puffy Cloud mattress is protected for life. The Puffy Cloud mattress comes with a lifetime warranty.
In the event your bed has a manufacturing defect, Puffy will replace your mattress with a comparable model and size of the mattress you bought. This is generous when you consider the industry standard is a 10- or 15-year warranty.
Puffy Cloud – Other Factors to Consider
There are other things that go into a mattress that might not be deal-breakers or even just things you tend to consider. We’ll go over a few of the lesser-known performance factors of the Puffy Cloud.
Off-gassing
Like some of the best bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Puffy Cloud comes in a cardboard box. Unpacking the mattress, it is normal to notice a slight chemical smell, and I did have this experience with the Puffy Cloud. However, I left the mattress in a well-ventilated room, and, after 48 hours, the smell had gone away completely.
Noise
The Puffy Cloud is an all-foam mattress, so you wouldn’t expect any creaking or squeaking, and I found that to be true. I didn’t notice any significant noise when I moved around and repositioned on the bed’s surface.
Sex
As we’ve been saying, the Puffy Cloud has more of a balanced foam feel. I found it to be decently responsive for an all-foam mattress. This makes it a good mattress for sex, and partners should have no egregious issues moving around.
Mattress Height
The Puffy Cloud is 10″ tall, which is pretty average for this type of all-foam mattress. If you’re looking for a thicker mattress (usually in the 12” to 14” range), try out the Puffy Lux Hybrid and the Puffy Royal Hybrid.
Sleeping Position and Weight
As a general rule, I believe that the Puffy Cloud should work best for back and side sleepers. When it comes to a sleeper’s body type, though, things can get a little more finicky.
Lightweight sleepers and average-weight folks should get enough support while back sleeping, and they should feel a good deal of contouring while side sleeping. Some heavyweight sleepers may be able to sleep comfortably on their back, but side- and stomach-sleeping is a no-go. There’s also a chance that some lightweight stomach sleepers will get enough lift from the Puffy Cloud to feel comfortable.
This chart below gives a great summary of which sleepers should choose the Puffy Cloud. Find your corresponding body type and preferred sleeping position to see how we rated it for that combination. “Excellent” should be a near-perfect fit, while “bad” means steer clear.
Sleeper Weight | Back Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight (Under 130 lb) | Excellent | Fair | Good |
Average (130 – 230 lb) | Excellent | Fair | Bad |
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb) | Good | Bad | Bad |
Heavyweight – [6’7”, 270 lbs]
“My hips sink through the comfort layer, but the transition layer keeps them from sinking in too far. Also, the top memory foam layer is providing nice contouring, taking the shape of every curve of our bodies. While side-sleeping, I felt some pressure on our shoulders and hips – again, the top comfort layer is not extremely thick on the Puffy Cloud mattress.” – Marten
Average-weight – [5’3″, 150 lbs]
“I felt good when I rested on my back and side, but I didn’t get enough support when I slept on my stomach. My hips sank into the top layer and put some pressure on my lower back.” – Elisa
Puffy Cloud Construction
The Puffy Cloud is an all-foam mattress made up of specialized memory foam layers. Let’s see exactly what the Puffy Cloud mattress is made of – I will look at each layer of the mattress and discuss how they affect the overall mattress performance.
Cover
The Puffy Cloud mattress features a polyester cover that’s thin, breathable, and soft. Aside from providing a comfortable surface, it shouldn’t affect the overall feel and performance of the mattress too much.
Comfort Layers
In between the cover and the rest of the comfort layers, there’s a sheet of felted fiber meant to resist heat. But the first comfort layer of note is something called Cooling Cloud™ foam – it’s basically soft memory foam that exhibits some of that slow-moving feel we’ve come to expect. It’s also infused with cooling gel to prevent it from trapping too much heat (a common issue with memory foam).
Below, there’s a Climate Comfort™ layer – this acts as the Puffy Cloud’s transition layer and is meant to prevent sleepers from pressing too far into the mattress. It is also designed to regulate the temperature of the mattress, keeping sleepers from overheating at night.
Support Layer
The support core of the Puffy Cloud mattress is made up of a 6-inch layer of support foam. This dense foam should provide a stable foundation for the rest of the mattress. It may not be as breathable or durable as an innerspring unit, but it should work as a solid base for this bed.
How to Try and Buy the Puffy Cloud Mattress
If you want to try out a Puffy mattress in person, their beds are available in certain mattress retailers and furniture stores nationwide. Simply go to their website and use their store-locator to find a location near you.
But if you’re set on buying online, check out the Puffy website. Their mattresses will ship in a box to your location — for free! And be sure to use our codes to ensure you’re getting the best deal. You’ll have 101 nights to test out the bed for yourself, and if it doesn’t work out, you can return it for free. Ready to do a little comparison shopping? Let’s see how the Puffy Cloud stacks up against some of its major competitors.
Puffy Cloud vs Puffy Lux Hybrid
The Puffy Lux mattress is a step-up from the Cloud, featuring a few more luxury touches and extra layers. The main difference in their construction is that the Puffy Lux is a hybrid mattress, meaning it has a coil layer to provide extra support and bounce. The Puffy Lux also features a gel memory foam layer for added pressure relief, exclusive only to this model.
The Puffy Lux feels a smidge softer than the Cloud, and we found it to be the better option if you’re looking for contouring. So, some side and back sleepers may want to go with the Lux. Neither bed is that great for stomach sleeping. The Cloud is definitely the more affordable option of the two, costing about $400 less. Coupons can bring the prices of both these beds down, however.
Puffy Cloud vs Purple
In my experience, the Puffy Cloud is firmer than the Purple Original mattress – though this will depend greatly on the weight of the sleeper, but I felt better pressure relief on the Purple. The Purple earned a higher support score, but the Puffy has a higher motion isolation score, so it might be the better option for couples. The Purple also has a more unique feel compared to the Puffy’s all-foam construction; its gel grid gives it a “squishy” feel.
While these mattresses are close in cost, the Puffy Cloud tends to be more affordable with available discounts. If the few-hundred-dollar difference doesn’t help you make a decision, choosing between them will really come down to shoppers’ sleeping preferences. Light- or average-weight side sleepers and those who like a foam feel should go with the Puffy Cloud mattress. Those who need more support should prefer the Purple mattress, and it should also work better for larger people, especially if they sleep on their side.
Puffy Cloud vs Casper Original
Looking at the Puffy Cloud and Casper Original mattresses, they appear quite similar – they are both all-foam mattresses with three layers and feature memory foam in their top layers. The main difference is going to be the Zoned Support system that is found in the Casper, but not the Puffy Cloud. This gives the Casper an edge when it comes to support (which we scored higher in our testings) The Puffy Cloud feels more uniform no matter what position someone is sleeping in.
Puffy Cloud has memory foam right on top, so it has a bit of that slow-moving feel. The Casper has a responsive polyfoam on top, so it is a bit more responsive and bouncy than the Puffy Cloud. So, Casper might be better option for combination sleepers. In terms of other performance categories, we gave the Casper a higher score for edge support, but the Puffy Cloud triumphed in motion isolation and cooling. This makes the Puffy Cloud a better pick for couples. When it comes to price, Puffy tends to run more regular promotions, making it the cheaper option.
FAQs
Are Puffy mattresses good?
The Puffy mattresses are indeed good, but they are going to be a better match for certain types of sleepers. For instance, the Puffy Cloud mattress is going to be a good fit for back sleepers and light- and medium-weight side sleepers. The Puffy Lux should be better for side sleepers who need even more comfort, and the Puffy Royal should be a good pick for those who want something higher-end.
How long does the Puffy mattress last?
Looking at its construction and materials, the Puffy Cloud mattress should last for at least five to seven years, if not more.
Can you flip a Puffy mattress?
The Puffy Cloud mattress is not designed to be flipped – the base foam should be on the bottom, and the memory foam layer should be on top. The mattress will not perform correctly if it is flipped over.
Do you need a box spring with the Puffy Cloud mattress?
The Puffy Cloud mattress does not require a box spring and can be placed on any solid firm or foundation.
