When I tested this mattress, I felt comfortable and cool in all three sleeping positions. Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Mattress Review: General Overview

This is the most luxurious mattress Emma sells. It’s 4” thicker and softer than the Emma Original mattress, and it boasts some impressive cooling materials. But even so, it’s not perfect. Here’s a closer look at its pros and cons. 

Pros of the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Comfort Mattress

• Because this mattress is thicker than others on the market, it’s very durable. I expect it to last at least 10 years. 
• Thanks to its medium-firm feel, this mattress works well for most combination sleepers.
• It has a cooling cover, some breathable foam layers, and a row of airflow-promoting coils. This makes it one of the best cooling mattresses on the market. 

Cons of the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Comfort Mattress

• It’s not supportive enough for stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 lbs. In this sleeping position, heavyweight stomach sleepers could develop lower back pain. 
• It has a balanced hybrid feel. If you prefer to “sink into” your mattress and feel lots of body contouring, you may want to consider getting one of the best memory foam mattresses.

How Firm is the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Mattress?

The Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Mattress comes in at 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, which is the industry standard for medium-firm. 

Sleeping on the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Mattress

When I slept on my back, I felt very supported and comfortable. The thick coils at the bottom prevented me from “bottoming out,” and the plush comfort layers cushioned my lower back. 

I felt great pressure relief when I slept on my side, but it’s important to note that I’m a petite person. Heavier side sleepers may feel a bit of pressure on their shoulders and hips.

Surprisingly, I also felt great when I rested on my stomach. Because I’m a smaller person, I didn’t compress the comfort layers too much and my hips got the necessary support. But if you’re a stomach sleeper who weighs more than 160 lbs, you might feel a bit of pain along your lower back. 

What Does the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Mattress Feel Like?

The Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite mattress has a balanced feel. The coils make it feel slightly bouncy, but the thick foam layers on top offer a good deal of cushioning. It’s fairly easy to move around on top of this bed, and you shouldn’t feel like you’re “stuck inside” the layers.

Is the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lbs)?

• Lightweight back sleepers should feel plenty of lumbar support on the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite mattress. 
• Side sleepers who weigh less than 130 lbs should also feel comfortable on this mattress. The thick foam layers should cushion joints and help alleviate pressure.
• It’s a great mattress for lightweight stomach sleepers. People in this category won’t compress the top layer too much, so they should get the hip support they need. 

Is the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Mattress Mattress Good For Average-Weight People (130 – 230 lbs)?

• Average-weight back sleepers should feel a nice balance of comfort and support on this mattress, thanks to its medium-firm feel. 
• This mattress works well for most average-weight side sleepers. The thick foam layers should help cushion joints and alleviate pressure. 
• Average-weight stomach sleepers who weigh less than 160 lbs should feel comfortable on this mattress, but heavier people may not get the hip support they need.

Cover

This mattress is surrounded by a breathable, thin cover that promotes airflow and helps sleepers stay cool at night. Another perk: The cover is removable and easy to wash. 

Comfort Layers

The Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite mattress has three comfort layers. First up: a layer of graphite-infused foam. This material has a classic slow-moving feel, and the graphite infusion is meant to dissipate body heat.

The second comfort layer consists of breathable aerated foam. This material promotes airflow, which helps the mattress stay cool. 

The last comfort layer is made with slow-moving memory foam. This helps absorb motion and prevent sleepers from “bottoming out.”

Support Layers

The first support layer consists of a high-density foam. Beneath that is a thick layer of pocketed, or individually-wrapped, support coils. These coils are also zoned, which means that each section of the bed has a slightly different firmness level. This is meant to help people maintain the proper spine alignment no matter which sleeping position they’re in.

Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Mattress Performance

When I test mattresses, I don’t simply take a nap on the bed. I also put the mattress through a number of tests to assess its motion isolation, edge support, durability, and more. 

Sleeping Hot or Cold

In my experience, the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite mattress lives up to its name. The cooling foam layers, combined with the breathable support coils, helped dissipate heat during my 30-minute nap. 

Motion Transfer

If you share a bed with a partner (or a pet!), you may want to keep motion transfer top of mind. If you’re sleeping on one side of the bed, and your partner tosses and turns next to you, are you going to feel it on your side of the bed?

To test this mattress’s motion isolation, I asked my coworker to switch sleeping positions on one side of the bed while I rested on the other. I could feel some of his movements on my side of the bed, but it wasn’t annoying or distracting. Overall, I think the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite mattress is a great mattress for couples. 

Edge Support

Edge support can also play a role in how well a bed works for couples. If the sides of the mattress sag under pressure, it could force couples to sleep closer toward the center of the mattress. 

Fortunately, the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite mattress has great edge support. When I sat along the edge, I felt very secure and stable. 

Durability

Because the Cooling Elite is thicker than most mattresses, I expect it to last at least 10 years.

Off-gassing

“Off-gassing” is a term that describes the faint chemical odor that’s often emitted after opening a bed-in-a-box mattress. Like many online mattresses, the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite took two days to completely off-gas.

Noise

I did not hear any noise when I tested the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite mattress, but it’s possible the coils could begin to squeak as time goes on. 

Sex

If you’re looking for one of the best mattresses for sex, you probably want something that’s responsive and easy to move around on. Even though the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite mattress has coils in its support layer, it’s not as bouncy as many innerspring mattresses. That’s not to say this mattress is a bad choice for getting intimate, but if you want a particularly bouncy bed, you may want to look elsewhere.

The mattress has a 365-night sleep trial period. If you decide the mattress isn’t a good fit, you can return the mattress within the first year and get a full refund.

Return Policy

Emma offers free returns on all mattresses, as long as it’s within the sleep trial period.

The Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite mattress is still fairly new, so there aren’t many customer reviews yet. On Emma’s website, one customer left a five-star review and two customers left four-star reviews. Reviewers said the mattress was well-made and high-quality, but one person complained about the long shipping time and another person said the mattress felt too firm.

There are several notable differences between the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite and Saatva Classic mattresses. First of all, the Saatva mattress is never compressed into a cardboard box, which means there is no off-gassing period. 

The Saatva mattress is also available in three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. This makes it a good option for a variety of body types and sleeping positions. The Luxury Firm model is slightly firmer than the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite, coming in at 7/10 on our firmness scale.. 

Both mattresses have breathable coils in the support layer, so when it comes to cooling, they are both good options. However, the Saatva mattress has a higher price tag.
