Tempur-Pedic put memory foam mattresses on the map. In the early days, this foam could trap heat. But now,  many brands, including Tempur-Pedic, have found ways to combat memory foam’s  heat-trapping problem.

If you want a pillow that has a slow-moving memory foam feel, but you’re concerned about overheating, the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro could be a good choice.

In my unbiased review, I cover everything you need to know about the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow. I go over my testing experience, the materials, how it stays cool, and more. Keep reading to learn whether this pillow will work for you. This pillow comes in two height options: “lo” and “hi” and I tested the “hi” version.

TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow Firmness and Feel

Firmness and feel are two of the most important factors to a pillow. Let’s go over how firm the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling pro pillow is, my testing experience with it, and how it feels.

How Firm is the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow?

Here at Mattress Clarity, we sort pillows into three firmness categories: soft, medium, and firm. I’d say the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow is  medium-firm. The memory foam feels dense and heavy, but when I rested my head on the pillow, I sunk in a good bit and felt decently supported.

An image of a hand pressing hard into the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow to show its firmness.

Sleeping on the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow

When I first test pillows, I quickly switch between all three sleeping positions to see how they  feel in each position. The TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow comes in two height options, “lo” and “hi.” For this review, I tested the hi version.

Thick pillows tend to work better for side sleepers, so  I started out on my side. My head sank in a little bit, but because this pillow was so tall, my head and neck felt very supported. I’d say the hi version is absolutely a win for side sleepers.

An image of a man sleeping on his back while resting on the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow.

Moving on to my back, however, things started to change. While the hi version worked really well for side sleeping, I felt my chin begin to dip downward when I slept on my backBack sleepers want to make sure their chin is in line with their chest. When a pillow is too tall, it can push your head and chin downward, which could feel uncomfortable and lead to neck pain. I’d recommend the lo loft version for back sleepers because of this.

From there, I switched over to my stomach. I wasn’t able to compress the pillow enough to get it flat enough for stomach sleeping. The lo version might work well for some stomach sleepers, but because it’s  5” tall, many stomach sleepers will probably prefer something thinner.  Take a look at our list of the best pillows for stomach sleepers for some good options.

30-60 Min Nap

I’m a side sleeper who tends to switch sides of the bed and roll onto different pillows while I sleep. When I started out on the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow, I actually felt the pillow get a little bit colder, which is not something I expected from a cooling pillow. However, as time went on and my head sank into the pillow, I did feel it get warmer. It’s important to note that it’s common for pillows to trap a little bit of body heat, and I never felt hot or uncomfortable.

Eventually, I switched to the other side of the bed and rested on another pillow. When I came back to the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro, the pillow had gotten cool again.

What Does the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow Feel Like?

The TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow is made mostly of Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR material, which is what most people think of when it comes to memory foam. It feels plush and slow-moving. That means if you press into the foam, it’ll take several seconds to return to its original shape.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lbs

Both height versions of this pillow should work well for average weight back and side sleepers. I’d recommend the hi version for side sleepers. Because this pillow is so tall, it’ll keep heads and necks supported while still offering a good amount of plush memory foam comfort. Because the lo version is an inch and a half shorter, it should work well for back sleepers and keep their heads from dipping into their chests. I wouldn’t particularly recommend either loft version for stomach sleepers, however.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

I also recommend both height versions to both heavyweight back and side sleepers. I fall into this category, and I found that the hi loft was perfect for side sleeping. But even I wasn’t able to compress the pillow very much to make it low enough for back sleeping, so I recommend back sleepers get the lo version. Stomach sleepers might be able to compress the lo loft version, but overall, I would say stick with flatter pillows for this position.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

If you’re a lightweight person with narrow shoulders, I would recommend the lo loft version of this pillow. Side sleepers with broad shoulders may do well with the hi version.  Back and stomach sleepers may need thinner pillows in order to sleep comfortably and keep their heads and necks in a proper alignment.

TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow Construction

Now let’s take a moment to look at all the materials that go into this pillow. I’ll explain what they are and how they impact the feeling of the pillow.

Cover

The outer cover is made of 90% polyester and 10% elastane, which gives the cover some stretchiness.

Core

The inner core is made of a combination of TEMPUR-material, Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary memory foam, and two gel slabs, which are found on both sides of the pillow.

The blue rectangle in the image is the gel pad that will stay cool.

Height/Loft

Loft refers to how tall a pillow is. The TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro comes in two height options: lo and hi. The lo is 5” tall, while the hi is 6.6” tall. For this review, I tested the hi version.

TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow Performance

Let’s cover some additional performance factors for the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Part of what makes this pillow great is its ability to keep you from overheating. The large gel pads on the outside do a great job of absorbing body heat, but not trapping it. What I notice about the gel is that it gets cold very quickly, making the pillow cool to the touch.

I’m a hot sleeper, so as I rested on this pillow for a couple of hours, I felt the gel get warmer as it absorbed my body heat. But even so, I never felt hot or uncomfortable. I’m also someone who changes sides of the bed frequently,so as I spent time on another side/pillow, the gel was able to get cool again

Off-Gassing

This pillow is not compressed into a cardboard box. It was ready to use right out of the box. I didn’t notice a smell, either, so those with sensitive noses shouldn’t have to let the pillow air out either.

Care Instructions

The outer cover is removable and machine-washable. Do not wash the foam core, as that will ruin the pillow. Tempur-Pedic recommends washing the cover in cold water with a mild detergent. Avoid using bleach.

It’s recommended that you air dry the cover, but if you’re pressed for time, you can tumble dry the cover on low heat.

Allergies

While not listed as a hypoallergenic product, memory foam pillows aren’t known for trapping allergens in your sleep environment. Because you can easily wash the cover, it shouldn’t be an issue for people with sensitive allergies.

Company Policies

Let’s go over the company policies Tempur-Pedic offers.

Warranty Info

Tempur-Pedic offers a 5-year limited warranty on the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow.

Sleep Trial

There is no trial period for the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow.

Return Policy

Tempur-Pedic considers its pillows as a personal use item and does not accept returns or exchanges for them, including the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro.

How Does TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow Compare To Other Pillows?

If a classic memory foam pillow isn’t something you’re sure about, don’t worry. Let’s see how the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow compares to Brooklyn Bedding’s latex foam pillow and Purple’s unique gel grid pillow.

Tempur-Pedic vs Brooklyn Bedding

Pillows can be made with a variety of materials. When it comes to foam, you have traditional memory foam, which is what the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro is made out of, and then you have latex foam, which is what the Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex pillow is made out of.

Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex Pillow

These two materials perform very differently. Latex foam is springy and responsive, meaning you sleep more “on top” of the Brooklyn Bedding pillow. But the Cloud Cooling Pro pillow uses TEMPUR-material, which is that classic slow-moving foam. This means you’ll sink into the pillow.

Both pillows have height options. The two heights on the Cloud Cooling Pro work well  for back and side sleepers. The tall version of the Brooklyn Bedding pillow works well for both back and side sleepers as well. However, the low version of the Brooklyn Bedding pillow should work well for stomach sleepers, while the lo version of the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro won’t.

Tempur-Pedic vs Purple

Purple is another popular brand in the mattress and bedding industry. The Purple Original pillow is made mostly of the company’s proprietary gel grid, giving it a springy feel. However, when compressed, the grid becomes quite firm and supportive. The TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro pillow is made mostly of TEMPUR-material, which is slow-moving and  lets you sink into the pillow.

purple pillow review feat 1

Both pillows work well for back and side sleepers, but the hi loft version of the TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro is a bit taller than the Purple pillow.

The Purple Pillow comes with foam boosters, giving it a bit of adjustability. This makes it a bit more appealing to all three sleeping positions, as different lofts work for different positions (higher for side sleepers, lower for stomach sleepers).

TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow FAQs

How long will my TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow last?

Around 3-5 years with good care. The TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro is made of a single slab of TEMPUR-material, and while it’s easy to compress and mold the pillow, the materials are all high-quality. Plus, there’s the addition of the gel slab, which goes over the memory foam, giving it a bit more protection from sagging. Tempur-Pedic offers a 5-year limited warranty on this pillow, and I expect it to last around that amount of time.

What if I don’t like my TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro Pillow?

Unfortunately, Tempur-Pedic considers all its pillows personal use items and does not accept returns or exchanges on these items.

Are Tempur-Pedic pillows worth buying?

In my opinion, yes. While some of them might be an investment, if you prefer to have that slow-moving, sinking memory foam feel in your pillows, then you won’t find much better than a Tempur-Pedic pillow. The TEMPUR-Cloud Cooling Pro is a particularly good pillow because it was designed for cooling, so you won’t have to worry about this pillow trapping a lot of heat.
